but we have some breaking news this morning. >> yeah, we sure do. we want to get right to that breaking news. sean diddy combs in custody this morning. >> he was arrested by federal agents at a new york hotel overnight. the indictment now laying out the specific charges and details of the case. it was just unsealed and made public a short time ago. of course this all comes three months after a federal grand jury began hearing evidence against the music mogul and six months after raids on his homes in los angeles and miami. in the meantime, combs has also been facing a wave of civil lawsuits alleging sex trafficking and abuse. >> we have it all covered. we're going to start with nbc's chloe melas in the federal courthouse here in manhattan. good morning to you, chloe. >> reporter: hey there, good morning. just moments ago federal authorities unsealed their indictments against sean combs. he is being charged with racketeering conspiracy. sex trafficking and transportation when it comes to

some of those sex workers as well. hip hop mogul sean diddy combs is in custody this morning, after being detained overnight by federal authorities in new york. according to a person familiar with the situation, combs was caught off guard by his arrest in the lobby of the park hyatt hotel, where he had been living for several weeks. but it comes six months after law enforcement sources told nbc that federal agents searched combs properties in miami and los angeles, finding guns and seizing computers and cell phones. those raids carried out on search warrants out of new york, into allegations of sex trafficking, according to a source familiar with the matter. since november, 2023, combs has also been hit with multiple civil lawsuits, with similar allegations, including sexual assault, sex trafficking and illegal distribution of guns and drugs. >> he's going to plead not guilty obviously. he's going to fight this with all of his energy and all of his might in the full confidence of his lawyers. >> just last week, dawn richard

alleging combs sexually assaulted her, deprived her of food and sleep and refused to pay her adequately. in a statement, combs' attorney an attempt to rewrite history and richard manufactured a series of false claims in hopes of getting a payday. in may, cnn aired this disturbing video of the rapper chasing down and attacking his long-time girlfriend at a los angeles hotel in 2016. >> my behavior on that video is inexcusable. >> reporter: issuing an apology issue, acknowledging the incident which he previously denied. >> i take full responsibility for my actions in that video. i was disgusted then when i did it. i'm disgusted now. >> reporter: according to combs' attorney, he is actually in the federal courthouse behind me now. he is waiting to be arraigned. in a short time, there will be a press conference held by the u.s. attorney's office. savannah? >> chloe, thank you very much. let's turn to laura jarrett. we just got this document.

it's incredibly disturbing, these allegations. >> yeah. the details are here. we now know at least what the charges are, savannah. sex trafficking, racketeering. what is that a criminal conspiracy. and what was the purpose? at least according to prosecutors, was for him to fulfill his own sick needs. and he did it through forced labor, interstate transportation of purposes of prostitution, coercion, giving women drugs and money for his own means. now, it's very clear here that they have a lot of details. but we don't have, obviously names and things like that. they're trying to protect people. it's also clear other people were involved in helping him in this effort. so it will be interesting to see whether anyone else is caught up in this is this around anyone else is arrested and indicted. >> all of that alleged in the indictment and we'll see what proof the prosecutors have as it goes forward in the legal scenario. he has this arraignment. then what would you expect? big question is whether he'll be permitted to be released on bail. >> we should find out what prosecutor's position is on that later today. he'll go into court. he'll plead not guilty according to his attorney and then they're going to discuss the conditions

of his confinement. he's been arrested overnight, but we'll see what happens obviously in the weeks ahead. but this is a long road. this is just the first step in what's going to be a very long process. >> and there's -- there are quite disturbing details in here about the allegations against him, having essentially interstate line sex parties with drugs, that kind of thing. this is separate from the civil lawsuits that we've seen. >> yes. >> although it may be that some of those complaining witnesses in the civil lawsuits could be witnesses here. >> may easily gone in front of grand jury. we just don't know. those will come out eventually at trial. >> the news this morning, laura jarrett, sean combs has been indicted initially by a grand jury here in new york on three counts, racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. we'll continue to cover this breaking story in new york, for the moment, laura, and chloe as well. appreciate that. hoda? >> another major story this morning, on going fallout from

the apparent second attempt on donald trump's life. we're seeing body cam video of the suspect's arrest. mr. trump again speaking out and growing calls to secure increase security around the president. we will start with garrett haake who covers the trump campaign. hey, garrett. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. as part of that increased focus on security, the palm beach county sheriff now says that mar-a-lago, behind me, has the highest security level possible, equivalent to when donald trump is present. that increased individual lens part of the fallout sunday's assassination attempt as we're learning more about the suspect and how his plan was foiled. donald trump returning to the campaign trail for the first time since sunday's apparent assassination attempt. he's set to attend a town hall tonight in battleground michigan. overnight, praising his protectors in law enforcement for their fast action. >> the secret service did a great job. and they have the man behind bars. and hopefully he's going to be

there for a long time. >> reporter: investigators say a sook ret service agent monitoring the woods ahead of mr. trump as he played golf on sunday saw a rifle barrel through the tree line and opened fire. >> the subject who did not have line of sight to the former president fled the scene. he did not fire or get off any shots at our agent. >> reporter: a republican donor and trump friend steve whitcoff was golfing with the former president sunday and spoke with us monday. how soon does the secret service act? >> two seconds, maybe three. the entire team converged on top of him, except for the snipers. >> reporter: the suspect quickly tracked down by local law enforcement. >> it was probably the highest profile stop this sheriff's office has ever made. >> reporter: his arrest captured on this body camera video, first obtained by nbc news. ryan wesley routh has a lengthy criminal history, including possession of a machine gun. on monday, federal prosecutors charged him with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person

and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. routh's social media posts paint a picture of a disillusioned former trump support who became an advocate for ukraine and supporter of democratic politicians. this incident is likely to draw new scrutiny to the embattled secret service agency. >> have you briefed former president trump on your findings so far? has his campaign asked for my changes in the security going forward after yesterday? >> i had a conversation with the former president. the president is aware that he has highest levels of protection that the secret service is providing him. >> garrett, there is still a lot of questions to be answered. among them, how the suspect was able to get that close. between 300 and 500 yards from the president. >> reporter: yeah, hoda. part of the answer is that he got there just so early. but the secret service director addressed this a little bit yesterday. argued the unscheduled nature of this golf trip meant their system worked, they weren't able

to do a full sweep of the area, a full perimeter around the golf course, something that would be expensive and disruptive and time consuming. that's not the way the small movements of a protectee typically work. that may be the kind of change they have to make in the future as they continue to work keep the former president and all the safe. >> garrett, thanks. let's take a closer look now at how this incident is impacting the race to the white house. just seven weeks to go until election day. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander on that part of the story. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. both vice president harris and former president trump are back on the trail today. harris in philadelphia. trump in flint, michigan. and their return to the road comes amid these heightened tensions in the political season with new calls today to calm things down. you will remember after a would be assassin targeted him in july, trump briefly called for unity. after this week's new scare and new interview, trump is blaming

his political opponents, telling a "washington post" columnist, quote, i really believe that the rhetoric from the democrats is making the bullets fly. in the wake of the apparent assassination attempt against former president trump, president biden and vice president harris are urging all americans to lower the temperature, forcefully condemning political violence. >> no place for political violence in america. none, zero, never. >> reporter: the vice president did a statement after the incident saying, we all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence. echoing her comments after the first attempt on trump's life in july. >> violence is never acceptable. there can be no equivocation about that. >> reporter: a white house official says president biden and trimp spoke monday with the president conveying his relief that his predecessor is safe. trump complimenting president biden after their call. >> he called up to make sure i was okay.

he couldn't have been nicer. >> reporter: still trump is not backing down from inflammatory rhetoric, telling fox news that president biden and harris are people that want to destroy our country. it's called the enemy from within. they are the real threat, he said. trump's running mate, jd vance, blaming the left for provoking violence. >> no one has tried to kill kamala harris in the last couple of months, and two people now have tried to kill donald trump in the last couple of months. i would say that's pretty strong evidence that the left needs to tone down the rhetoric. >> reporter: the white house quickly slammed elon musk's recent comments as irresponsible, after his weekend post on x appearing to question why no one has even tried to assassinate president biden or harris. musk later deleted the post, and said it was a joke. a top republican senator mitt romney also calling for calm. >> over the weekend, i saw president trump suggested he hated taylor swift. i think cooling down the rhetoric would be a good thing on both sides. >> reporter: that came after

trump sunday morning declared i hate taylor swift on his social media site, just days after the superstar endorsed harris in an instagram post, to her 284 million followers. and back to the campaign trail, today is national voter registration day. just this morning the harris campaign announced its plans to mobilize young voters to register. on monday, trump's voter registration pitch included an attack on the vp, accusing harris, who is half black, of killing the legacy of black and hispanic voters. savannah? >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you, peter. so this morning a state of emergency is in effect for parts of north carolina, hit by a sudden coastal storm that produced historic amounts of rain and life-threatening flooding. that system is continuing to pose a threat today. we will get to the forecast in just a moment. but, first, nbc's marissa parra joins us now from charlotte, north carolina. hey, marissa, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning.

this storm never reached tropical cyclone status. this storm never even got a name. but whatever you want to call it, it has battered the coast of the carolina, leaving residents stunned by once-in-a-thousand-year rainfall. this morning a soggy start to the week for folks in the carolinas, where residents are drying out from the fast-developing rainstorm that wreaked havoc along the coast. >> the weather kept getting worse and worse and the rain just kept coming. i have never seen it come up this fast this quickly. >> reporter: potential tropical cyclone nate never formed enough for a name but did plenty of damage, nonetheless. life-threatening flash flooding left the coastal town of carolina beach completely submerged after more than 15 inches of rain fell in 12 hours. forecasters calling it a one-in-a-thousand year event. >> they turned brunswick county into multiple islands. >> reporter: roadways looked like rivers. stranding some drivers. >> it didn't look that high. the water did not look that

high. you can see the car just completely almost went underwater. >> reporter: in brunswick county, some waving down a new ride after flooding out their own. >> i knew it was raining really hard, but i had no idea it was going to be this bad. >> reporter: highway 17 shut down for hours, leaving hundreds of cars stranded, parts of the road under as much as 7 feet of water. >> my wife is pregnant. she's due in the next couple weeks. i got three kids. i'm about to do some off roading if i need to. >> reporter: one road even collapsed and took a car down with it. now the coastal carolinas looking to dry off from the storm that proved no name doesn't mean no impact. now, eastern carolina is getting pounded by rain as we speak. the storm system will continue to move upward through virginia. hoda, we're getting a break from the rain here in charlotte, as we speak. as you can see behind me with this bike path or whatever you can see of the bike path that's left behind me, it will take

some time for charlotte and the carolinas to dry off and return to normal from this. hoda? >> marissa parra, thank you. let's bring in dylan and find out where this storm is headed. >> hey, good morning. the rain is moving up into virginia for the most part. we have flood watches for some 6 million people. keep in mind, even though this never became a named tropical moisture in the atmosphere, when you get the heavier downpours we see rain fall rates of 2 to 3 inches of rain fall in an hour. now this area of low pressure will continue to kind of meander through the carolinas, bringing some of the outer bands through central and northern virginia. this turns into a coastal system and then eventually will start to pull away. as we go into wednesday, we will still see some of the rain and pockets of heavier rain move into the mid atlantic. so additional rain fall could be up to about 3 to 6 inches. again, mostly across parts of virginia. that could lead to brief flooding when all of that rain falls in a brief period of time. so that's the storm system we're watching for the east coast. elsewhere across the country, we do have a chance of stronger

kris sanchez in san francisco, where it is day one of the dreamforce conference. we're expecting about 45,000 people to be here in san francisco for the big event. we are expecting a big economic impact for the city as well, which will benefit public schools and the ucsf benioff children's hospital. a lot of star power and a lot of traffic. so make sure you give yourself time to get here. if you're coming here and make sure you steer clear. if you're not. there's a new push in san francisco to protect small businesses. supervisor president aaron peskin believes merchants need added protections, especially legacy businesses that are being squeezed out in too many neighborhoods at the mercy of proposed redevelopment. he plans to introduce a new proposal at today's supervisors meeting. ahead of that meeting, he and other leaders will host a news conference outside a small business in the inner richmond. what will the weather be? let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. and looking at san francisco. we can see a lot of low clouds, some mist and

titan and multiple issues with titan, top engineers that it simply wasn't safe to dive to such depths. but the ceo of oceangate that died in the implosion, he insisted it was safe and suggested the dive to the "titanic" was proceeding as planned. >> reporter: this morning, this newly-released photo shows the tail comb resting not far from the wreck of the titanic. new details about "titan"'s final moments. >> there were no transmissions which indicated trouble or an emergency aboard the "titan". >> reporter: the coast guard releasing this animation showing titan's decent, while messaging with the polar prince. among the crew's last words, all good here. but then at 10:47 a.m., "titan" messaged it was dropping weights, which could suggest it needed to surface. suddenly, the support ship lost contact. >> the polar prince continued messaging the titan two or three times per minute with no response.

>> reporter: four days later, search teams spotted titan's wreckage not far from the titanic. months later, human remains. lost in the disaster, shahzada dawood, his 19-year-old son, suleman british adventurer hamish harding, "titan"'s pilot paul-henri nargeolet and stockton rush, the ceo of oceangate. the parent company. at monday's coast guard hearing, the engineer that helped design "titan" saying he refused to get inside. >> he asked me -- he wanted me to be the pilot that runs the titanic missions, and i told him i'm not getting in it. >> tony was among dozens of engineers who warned ceo rush that the carbon fiber hull would not with stand extreme diving pressure. it could crack and implode. but rush said he was pressing ahead. >> i'd like to be remembered as an innovator. general mcarthur said, "you are remembered for the rules you break." it may have been hit by

lightning in 2018. experienced dozens of issues during dives in 2021 and '22 and had been exposed to extreme cold in new fin lund before the fatal dive in '23. the former finance director said the company was in trouble. >> we basically didn't have any money coming from except from investors while i was there. >> reporter: on the waterfront, in everett, washington, a simple stone marker to remember those who were lost. >> tom, you mentioned it is a two-week hearing. what else are we expecting? >> 24 witnesses in all. they include more oceangate employees, engineers, coast guard officers on the scene really focussed on whether titan's design and whether that kind of material should be used again on any deep sea submersible. the findings will go to the coast guard and the ntsb. any potential criminal refers would go to the justice department. but oceangate is out of business. >> tom, thank you. coming up, secondhand september. have you ever heard of that? it's a thing.

he's been charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. combs, of course, is one of hip hop's most successful producers and entrepreneurs and according to a person familiar with the situation, combs was caught off guard by his arrest last night in the lobby of the park hyatt hotel where he had been living there recently. this indictment had come six months after law enforcement sources told nbc news that federal agents searched combs' properties in miami and los angeles, finding guns, seizing computers, even cell phones. those raids were carried out on search warrants out of new york into allegations of sex trafficking. according to a source familiar with the matter, now since november of last year, combs has also been hit with ten civil lawsuits. with similar allegations of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and the illegal distribution of guns and drugs. now, sean diddy combs' attorney released a statement late yesterday saying that his client was, quote, an innocent man with nothing to hide. according to his attorney,

this thing has really taken off like a rocket ship. designers are getting involved. tell us about it. >> it's really exciting. this is second-hand september. there's two main drivers to this whole obsession with buying secondhand. one, it's budget friendly and two, it's echo friendly. circular fashion. we don't have to create space for more stuff to be made. there's great shoes, great clothes, great handbags out there looking for a second or third home. we talk about that 291 billion by 2029. this is a massive market. and last year, there was a recent study that came out by thread-up, shoppers say they buy one thing secondhand. this is driven by gen z. boomers saying the stuff they used to make back in the day is great quality. why aren't we keeping it and buying it and keeping it in the system. we talk about these designers. dvf, she not only has the website where you can buy secondhand dresses but now the flagship store in new york, places where you can shop in person for these items. sandro is doing it online.

what you get. and you follow the descriptions. consignment stores. this idea that you have really nice things or big pieces that you're going to bring into a store. they're going to give you space in their store for 30 to 60 days maybe. you agree on a price range to sell it. they'll give you the money. when that item sells. if that item sells. right? but if you actually just want to get rid of stuff, there are two big chains for clothing. buffalo exchange and plato's closet. they very on trend. don't think it will be a goodwill or salvation army. they want the stuff in seasoned and will pay you cash on the spot. >> they're like, that's not in. i love that shirt. then they're like, why are you giving it away then? >> it's winter. play it again sports is one of my favorites. in person, sporting goods, i mean, look, jimmy just picked up lacrosse, played for a week and doesn't want to play. it's expense i have. >> rendition of thrift shop. >> bring the beats back in.

♪ they're playing our song. we have a special edition of "today food" as we continue to celebrate hispanic heritage month. joining us this morning, an award-winning baker and her mom. christina discovered her love of baking as a little girl growing up in puerto rico watching her mom master the kitchen. look, we have the photo proof right there. now she's known as the cape cake girl. she brings custom confections across the country with famous clients -- including a-list clients like jason mamoa. welcome. it is so nice to have you here. >> thank you for having me. >> she is your inspiration. >> yes. she basically taught me all of the things i know today, so yeah. >> okay. so we will make puerto rican cake. tell me what we have here. >> so here we are creaming the butter and sugar. we use salted butter.

and then we put it here with our sugar and then just cream it until it's light and fluffy, which is very -- >> softened butter. >> you don't have to but it is easier on the mixer. obviously you don't want to burn down your mixer. but we just cream that until light and fluffy. then we move on to adding our eggs, our extract and then we move on to basically adding milk and then alternating with your self raising flour which is very important. >> yeah. so what makes this -- what gives it the puerto rican flavor with distinctionive about this cake? >> yeah. what a lot of people don't know, flavor into our recipes. >> do tell. >> yeah. it the a very moist almond cake which is what we do in puerto rico. >> yum. >> that's what we're known for. just a lot of flavor. >> so this will be our batter. >> yes. once you cream your sugar, add all your wet ingredients. you'll have a batter that look like this. a little bit thick. you separated your eggs from your egg whites. and then we'll basically fluff up your egg whites to look like

this. >> did you do that with a hand mixer. >> you can do it on -- i would say with your actually kitchen aid mixer. you don't want that hand to fall off. you'll basically make it look like snow. then you incorporate this in here. >> okay. >> look at that. >> and then basically -- >> the tasters could not wait. >> best cake ever. >> verdict is in. >> not just the cake or the frosting. cake and frosting. >> yeah. adding the fluffy egg whites at that step what does that do? >> this basically adds, incorporates air into your batter which is important. the other batter was thick. so you want to add this to make it fluffy. by incorporating air and then just -- >> can you do that with other cakes? i never seen that separate out -- >> yes. depending on the recipe that you have, you can. ours just calls for that. and just mix it nice and soft. yep, yep. >> i could eat that whole thing. >> oh, yeah.

>> is that enough for these three little tins. >> yes, exactly. that recipe that we have is enough to do six inch three of them pans. and then what we have here, obviously once it's baked, you have your simple syrup. two to one ratio. >> that what makes it so flavorful and so i guess you could call it wet. >> i've never done this. >> once you have your simple syrup done, which you'll cook over and once that boils and comes to this form, you'll grab one of these measuring cup. then just basically pour it all other. you want to soak your cake. that way it's nice and moist. that's the most important thing. >> like half cup there. >> no, exactly. i think around a cup would be perfect for this size. and we have. and then you basically have your cake layers whole. that's the most important thing. >> leave it like that. you put it in the fridge or anything? >> you can. if you're in a hurry, you can. >> cream cheese -- we have 30 seconds.
