plus, a vital union chooses to sit on the sidelines. the teamsters break tradition and decide not to endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in decades. our washington insider breaks down the impact it will have on the tight race for the white house. this is today in the bay and here we go. it's thursday morning, 5:00. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at what's happening with that commute coming up in just a bit. but first let's look at that forecast. as for today. kari. yeah, it looks great. now we're starting out with a lot of cool temperatures and clouds, and we're still watching some rain close by the bay area. take a look at the activity that we have on the radar satellite for the parts of the central and southern sierra. we're seeing some showers, thunderstorms, and possibly even some snow for those very high elevation areas. and we're looking at also some thunderstorms just to our south. this is happening right there on 101 near king city. and soledad.
5:02 am
and the thunderstorms that have been developing are also producing some very heavy rain here in the bay area. we're going to keep it quiet. and i think a lot of the rain and thunderstorm chances will stay just to our south as we take a live look outside in dublin. this morning, we will see a cloudy start heading for a sunny day and just a touch warmer than it was yesterday afternoon. mike, you're tracking a crash in the north bay. yeah, highway 37 is where we typically see the first slowing. it's not here at merritt island, although there may be some in the next couple of minutes. there's already slowing around. lakeville highway because of an earlier crash. activity has been going on there for over a half hour now, and it sounds like a car might have gone off the roadway right at the transition with lakeville highway just got confirmed with chp. the transition is accessible, though, from lakewood highway to highway 37. there a little bit of slowing shows up in the westbound commute direction. we'll track that. it sounds like that avenue is passable, though. as you get toward the scene, the rest of the main moves well, we'll track down what's going on
5:03 am
road side here, 880 in oakland. back to you. all right. we'll check back with you, mike. new overnight oakland police so far not commenting on apparent shooting last night in the fruitvale district. it happened a little before ten on international at 27th avenue. video showed that large police response. the photographer on scene believes the victim died at the scene. again, we're not able to confirm that information with police, but as soon as we get new information, we will of course, bring it to you. new surveillance video in san francisco shows the moment a group of thieves slam a vehicle through the front of a corner store, apparently to steal lottery tickets. today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live in the city this morning. and ginger certainly looked like there was a lot of damage. and i'm sure frustration to that store owner. that is correct, laura. you know, this isn't the first time that this has actually happened to the store and that store owner. the store is in is on 17th and balboa, which is in the richmond district here in the city, it's typically a quiet residential

neighborhood. and about a year ago, an almost identical theft in an attempt to steal about $10,000 worth of lottery ticket. this time around, thieves only got several hundred dollars worth. but the amount of frustration does not change, and you can see for yourself here. this is when the truck pummels through the front of the store on 17th and balboa around 930 tuesday night. seconds later, you see a man walk in and moments after that he walks out with about $350 worth of scratch off lottery tickets in hand, according to the store's owner. thieves took just the lottery tickets. it's just sad that you know san francisco and the bay area in general. it's hard to be a small business owner. other surveillance video shows the moments before the crash into the store, and it appears another car and a couple other people were checking it out.
5:05 am
well, it wasn't just the thieves that did their own surveillance. neighbors helped police identify the getaway vehicles, and their tips paid off. sfpd says plain clothes officers spotted the suspect vehicles near i-80 eastbound at octavia boulevard. that's about close to the freeway entrance there and continued surveillance as the vehicles traveled to oakland. the suspect vehicle was disabled near eighth and center streets in oakland, and a total of four people have been arrested. not as much luck, however, for a nearby cigarettes or cheaper store that's about two blocks away in the same neighborhood. thieves recently broke in there not once, but twice in the past year. now the store owner there did not want to go on camera, but told us that the two burglaries in those two burglaries, the thieves have gotten away with more than $100,000 worth of goods and cash. there have been no arrests in that case, but possibly with

the help of neighbors. if it's not too late, or help of other people in the community. potentially, this can lead to some progress there. certainly in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. thank you. there have been so many break ins and robberies. thanks for the latest, ginger. well, turning now to decision 2024 and the race for the white house former president donald trump addressed a crowd in long island, new york, in his first rally since the second apparent assassination attempt. he doubled down on false claims about haitian immigrants eating pets in springfield, ohio. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris, addressing the issue of the economy and immigration with the congressional hispanic caucus today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington with us following both of those candidates on the candidate on the campaign trail. good morning. brie good morning marcus. yeah, with less than 50 days to go. both campaigns are ramping up their efforts to reach out to voters. today, former president trump will be here in washington, d.c, while vice president harris, she will

brie thank you. you see, leaders are downplaying a vote by regents happening today to approve the possibility of receiving military grade weapons and ammunition for campus police. but some questioned the timing, especially in light of the recent protests, which shook up some uc campuses. as of 2021, state law requires all enforcement law enforcement agencies to publicly request approval for new weapons and ammo, but uc police are not believed to be ready to do so. in part of a statement given to today in the bay, the uc office says, quote, this is a routine agenda item that is not related to any particular incident and ucpd equipment is not military surplus, nor is it military grade or designed for military use. universities. police departments do not use equipment from the u.s. department of defense. today, marking the final day of dreamforce at san francisco's moscone center. but some attendees may be experiencing a little ringing of the ears this morning. that's if

to start to warm up for the inland valleys while still staying cool near the coast, and for the weekend, the summer heat will be ramping back up as we welcome in the start of fall. so here's a look at our highs for today. still pretty nice 70s with a few low 80s. some of the warmer spots will be in ukiah and clear lake with mid to upper 80s, while san francisco stays in the 60s. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. mike, where can we fill up for less? kari we're doing our best to find it with the help of gasbuddy.com. so today's best is up again from yesterday's best. it's in san jose. we have for 29 at quick serve on alum rock avenue. that's in the south bay and the north bay. solano county's best is also 429. in the middle. it's vallejo. we're shouting out bond fair on sacramento street and in alameda county, fremont's lowest listed is 435 as smart gas on grimmer boulevard. we shouted out gasbuddy.com where you can also help add to those price listings. there. as we look on the roadways, we have a smooth

we're in the upper 70s. a quick warm up happening as it will be just a touch warmer than it was yesterday afternoon, but we are getting a lot more sunshine and the warming trend continues into the weekend. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates coming up and the fog here again this morning at the golden gate bridge, or at least some low clouds and no traffic coming toward us. that's the southbound out of the north bay. there's some slowing on the approach. we're watching for crews to clear about. now, that may be what's going on. we'll talk about two issues coming through the north bay as you approach the golden gate bridge. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. the big headline is the rate cut. i'll get to that in just a second. so this is salesforce. dreamforce has its last day continuing in san francisco. mike's been telling us how to get around traffic on howard and third shares. in truth social, which trade under donald trump's initials djt. lowest since the merger. and there's a reason for this. the lockup on shares of truth social ends today. that means trump can sell shares. he

5:18 am
but the fed had a regularly scheduled meeting. jay powell explained the reasoning behind the cuts, including concerns about employment. the fed's other job dot plot shows more cuts coming. fed designed to be independent. trump, for his part, thinks the central bank should be more connected with the white house with the president getting some sort of say on interest rates. iphone 16 goes on sale tomorrow without many of the ai features that apple touted at its announcement last week. apple plans to roll much of that out later, but the phones will be upgraded to handle the ai. older phones aren't. the reviews are starting to roll in, and reviewers note without the new ai, there's not a lot to talk about. better battery, better camera. separate camera button, new colors. chris velasco over at washington post says, if you're coming from an older iphone, the extended battery will feel huge. ted hazelton over at cnbc calls it a solid upgrade. the incomparable

wait for it all the time and it's so great, but now you can watch it. everything all right. nice lineup. yeah. nice lineup. and we've had a nice lineup weather wise this week as well. yeah it's been pretty good for most of the bay area. i was hoping for a little bit more rain yesterday. it's still lingering across the region. and i do think that for us the rain chances have ended. but just to our south, it is still going very much with some heavy rainfall. and look at the lightning strikes that we're seeing there. also, some rain over the sierra. so it's been a pretty busy morning there with all of the rain happening just to our south on highway 101, kind of just rolling up the interstate. and we're going to see quite a bit of that staying to our south here. we're looking at clouds. let's head to martinez with a look at how the morning will shape up for you. it will be in the upper 50s kind of our usual start to the day. and then as we go into late morning, into the afternoon, gradually warming up. what you'll notice today is that we
5:22 am
will get a lot more sunshine, and it's going to be just a touch warmer than it was yesterday afternoon, but still really comfortable here. we'll see those high temperatures in the mid 70s and quickly cooling down as we go into the evening. as we zoom in to the south bay. here's a look at our highs for today 77 in downtown san jose, as well as 77 in gilroy for the east bay. it's in the low 80s from antioch to concord. walnut creek, 80 degrees and 71. in oakland, mid 60s for half moon bay and in redwood city 74 degrees and the san francisco, all of the city. we're going to stay in the 60s today. morning clouds, afternoon sunshine and a lot more sun in the north bay with highs near 80 degrees. so the cool air is heading off towards the east. it will be replaced by some much warmer temperatures for the weekend, and by early next week we're going to have some very high summer heat. but the good thing is that we will have some cooling for the middle to end of next week. so as we take a look
5:23 am
at san jose, a couple of days with highs in the 90s are coming in with some of our inland valleys up to about 98 degrees, with the peak of the heat on monday, we'll be tracking all of those changes for you and mike. you were tracking a crash early on this thursday morning. we had a couple of crashes. the one still going on is west 37 at lakeville, but no more slowing shows up. still activity access to and from lakeville highway. but westbound 37 does show that initial kick off that we expect out of vallejo, heading in the direction of novato, then from novato, south. everything is smooth past the crash here, right around blythedale reports that there may have been a deer that was hit, so watch for some activity. should be toward the shoulder now. and there's more slowing. we talked about how we didn't see a lot of traffic across the golden gate bridge. i believe they're moving that crew from the north bay still have crash activity on the peninsula through brisbane. south 101 slows as you pass by some activity sounds like a crash into the bushes. back to you. thank you mike. growing worries for the future of health care. next here on today in the bay,

part of the peninsula is fine. like this. these tail lights heading south toward the san jose area. as we're looking through brisbane, though, it's jammed up down to one lane past by alana way, an earlier crash and an investigation going on. they need another tow truck to pull a second vehicle from the bushes there. again, south 101 is jammed just down to one lane as heading south out of san francisco, through brisbane. and i'm also looking at palo alto with a look ahead for the day. we're starting out cloudy with upper 50s and it's going to be a cool start, but you'll notice that this afternoon will be warmer than yesterday as we get much more sunshine, we'll take a

marcus, thanks so much, kari. it is quarter to six right now. president biden will talk about the economy later this morning. and there's certainly a lot to talk about. scott mcgrew the economy is the top priority for most voters. yeah, especially inflation. right. so you know the fed just cut interest rates by a half a point. that's more than experts expected. the fed indicating it thinks inflation is under control as we were discussing in our business segment. yes there are still things that cost more. but looking in aggregate inflation is very close to the fed's 2% target. biden will speak about inflation to the economic club in washington later this month or this morning, rather not this month. the white house says it won't be a victory lap and that the president still knows there are challenges. president biden, yesterday you saw him celebrating hispanic heritage month at the white house. he made remarks about former president trump's continued attacks on both legal and illegal immigrants. we believe
5:47 am
in an immigration system that reflects our values. we don't demonize immigrants. we don't single them out for attacks. we don't believe they're poisoning the blood of the country. we're a nation of immigrants, and that's why we're so strong. former president trump, meantime, repeated his promise to travel to springfield, ohio. there are thousands of legal immigrants from haiti, haiti, that live and work there. he seemed to indicate he thought it would be dangerous for him. so i'm going to springfield and i'm going to aurora. you may never see me again, but that's okay. got to do what i got to do. whatever happened to trump? well, he never got out of springfield. now trump is speaking here in new york city, and anybody tracking the election should be like, wait, hold the phone. why is he in new york city? that would be like harris campaigning in texas. a waste of time and money. trump lost new york state by 20 or
5:48 am
more points the both times he ran previously. but if some in the trump campaign think that they can flip new york, that would totally upset the electoral college in the race to 270. it wouldn't matter if harris won pennsylvania and nevada and georgia. if trump won new york, the house failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open past the end of the month. the at issue is a bill tacked on that would force american voters to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. remember, house speaker johnson needs to attach bills like that, bills that sink the vote because if he doesn't, he'll lose support of the freedom caucus and likely lose his job. his counterpart over in the senate, mitch mcconnell, warns that's putting republicans into a situation where they will be blamed for shutting down the government, though, to be fair, if they did pass it in the house, democrats would vote it down in the senate and the government would close on october 1st. new york times,

for no particular reason. and i can ascertain, added taylor swift, to its presidential favorability poll, 44%, like the singer, who recently endorsed kamala harris. swift citing trump pushing fake ai pictures as a reason for her big announcement, making clear she supports harris, trump responded with a simple statement on his social network, truth social. i hate taylor swift. speaking of truth social, the lockup on shares in that company expires today. it means donald trump can sell part or all of the shares in the company, which could net him as much as $2 billion, he says. though laura, he will not. interesting. thank you very much, scott. it is 5.49 right now. weight loss drugs have been soaring in popularity for months now, but they're not always accessible for those who need them. drugs like ozempic and wegovy have been a hot commodity due to price and supply. well, now people are turning to natural alternatives to help
5:50 am
them shed a few pounds. key ingredient in these alternatives is a hormone, glp one. it is meant to suppress your appetite and mimic the feeling of fullness. but experts say supplements that contain say they contain glp one don't always do. they also say other kinds of weight loss supplements aren't always as effective as the popular prescription drugs. if you could just go buy a supplement and lose 20 or 30 or 40 pounds, it would be you couldn't hear the end of it. it would be all over the place, just like the glp ones are, but they're not. be sure to tune in to the today show starting at 7:00 this morning. for more on natural weight loss alternatives. that's ahead. right after today in the bay well, there's one certainty ahead of the niners week three game in los angeles this weeken. it's not who wins but who fills the seats. and you can expect another red wave over at sofi stadium. the niners head coach, kyle shanahan, says he likes the idea in certain situations. it's only cool if you play real well.
5:51 am
if you play real well and can kind of control the game, then it gets real fun. if not, then it's twice as disappointing. the niners play the rams sunday afternoon and they'll have to deal with two key issues here. injuries. wide receiver deebo samuel and running back christian mccaffrey both injure. trailblazer rita moreno was in walnut creek last night and it was a full house at the lesher center. the one the only the icon, rita moreno. the star sat down with our own jessica aguirre to talk about her career, which spans eight decades. moreno, best known for her breakout role as anita in west side story the performance earned her an oscar for best supporting actress, making her the first latin american woman to win an academy award. the puerto rican born actress, also an egot, one of 21 actors to

have been awarded an emmy, a grammy, an oscar and a tony. well, trending this morning, bad monkey, one of the breakout series of the summer and the star is so money he doesn't even know it. i'm in a bit of a jam here. dude, you're a murder suspect. maybe it's even a pickle. on a scale from 1 to 10. how screwed am i, a million? you couldn't just say ten. you don't think i'd understand that ten is bad? you know that guy right there? swingers fans probably better know him as vince vaughn. you might say that his new series brings florida at its finest. so. and funniest, of course, now it comes as the creator of scrubs and ted lasso. vaughn telling our kris sanchez that he really relates to the persona of his character, detective andrew yancy. i think the character's that way on the page to a large degree. he's sort of this, you know, kind of sense of humor and point of view about things and so it's nice to kind of go and have a character that's, that's fun that you can
5:53 am
kind of embody in that way. the ten part series is a mystery, but you know what? there's a lot of comedy in there as well. premiered last month, the new episodes drop each wednesday on apple tv. all right, a lot to watch, a lot to do in the bay area as well. let's check the forecast with kari. and our weather is changing quite a bit going into the weekend. it's been kind of a cool week, but i think a lot in the inland valleys, a lot of people in the inland valleys have really enjoyed the break from the high heat, but it will be coming back this weekend as we start out right now in the mid 50s in san francisco, upper 50s for palo alto and walnut creek, and in san jose, a little bit warmer there, 63 degrees. we've been watching some rain just to our south. this is all a part of that system that brought us the clouds and the spotty showers yesterday morning. but we've got some storms blowing up here, and we're seeing a lot of lightning strikes, not only over the sierra, but just to our south, right there on highway 101, south of the bay area, from king city to soledad. it is still
5:54 am
going. and we're seeing these storms firing up and basically redeveloping over some of the same areas. i don't think it will move into the bay area today. staying just to our south and our temperatures staying on the cool side for this time of year. fremont. we'll see a high there of 73 degrees and 78 in dublin, 82 in concord, upper 70s and low 80s for much of the north bay, while san francisco will be in the 60s. looking at tomorrow's high temperatures will be just a touch warmer compared to today. going up a couple of degrees, but it will continue to heat up. we'll really feel that heat on saturday into sunday with some low 90s in spots like clear lak, clear lake, ukiah, vacaville, fairfield and it will be in the upper 80s for much of the south county. the cool weather moving out of here and high pressure will quickly roll in, and that will be slow to move. so we'll have several days of some pretty hot temperatures and then eventually for the middle to end of next week, we'll get some
5:55 am
relief with this low that will be coming in by next wednesday into thursday. so looking at all of the temperatures here and what we'll see for inland spots like concord going from highs in the 70s and 80s to upper seconds on monday. oh my gosh it's going to be hot. but we will see those temperatures coming back down for the middle of next week. and mike you're still tracking that traffic alert i am kari not at the bay bridge toll plaza, but there is a crash here. wanted to start with the backup that quickly filled in the entire approach. so keep that in mind over there. getting into san francisco will be impeded by that one crash. but you saw the traffic moving. its the peninsula with the crash that continues to have the alert around it. this is south 101 at alana way, heading down through brisbane. you're down to one lane. an earlier crash into the bushes, and it sounds like some activity there for an investigation going on. that's in addition, as you look at the bay bayshore boulevard as an option to get past that jam, there may be another just past that. we heard about a new crash involving a bigger rig. as
5:56 am
you're heading south, 101 past candlestick point. so watch for that. through this stretch. 280 is just fine. heading down the peninsula. the rest of the bay is a predictable build back to you. thanks, mike. happening now, governor gavin newsom is working to keep gas prices more stable. state lawmakers are in sacramento for the second special session, focusing on gas prices today. the governor wants to require oil refineries to keep minimum levels of oil reserve. this is to prevent the spike in prices. but republican opponents say that requiring these oil tanks increases gas prices in california and other states and lead to the shortages. but newsom's office is disputing those claims. it said that they're looking to have backups to avoid shortages, and there's already enough storage to meet those goals. a different kind of smash and gra. thieves drive a truck through the front door of a local family owned business. ahead at 6:00 on today in the bay, the way officers were able to catch up with those suspects. plus
