a driver plowing into the front of a san francisco store. the items the thieves were after, and the way officers were able to catch up with the suspected drivers, and a shooting overnight in oakland. the new details we're learning as the investigation unfolds. plus military equipment on campus after violent protests. you see college police are asking leaders to approve a controversial proposal. the key vote and response from university leaders. this is today in the bay. and good wednesday morning to you. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a bit. but let's talk about the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. and we're starting out with some clouds and cool
6:01 am
temperatures across the bay area this morning. but a lot of changes ahead as we take a live look outside in san jose. we're starting out with jacket weather, but it will be a very pleasant day with a mostly sunny sky. it will be warming up in the valleys as we go into our weekend and summer heat will be coming back as we start fall this sunday. so let's head to mountain view with a look at how the morning will shape up for you. mostly cloudy through 9:00 and then becoming mostly sunny, going from upper 50s to low 70s. it's going to be a beautiful afternoon. make some plans to get outside. we'll be in the upper 70s in san jose and a few of those low 80s starting to pop up with warmer temperatures ahead. mike. that alert still continues for 101. that's right on the peninsula. getting out of san francisco, you jam up as you pass by the brisbane area. passing through the area, there's a crash south of silver. you may want to use bayshore boulevard as an option to get past the jam. still down to one lane. from what i understand earlier. crash and investigation. there's another crash, perhaps two between that
6:02 am
area between silver and candlestick park. so candlestick point and watch for that on the peninsula. meanwhile, everything else is pretty standard south of there, over in the east bay, though, we do have slowing southbound 880, there may be a new crash into hayward, and i'm tracking a big rig that is sticking out into the slow lane south 680. as you're passing by, vargas back over to you. thank you very much, mike. new overnight oakland police so far not commenting on an apparent shooting last night in the fruitvale district. happened a little before 10:00 on international at 27th avenue. video shows a large police response. the photographer on scene believes the victim died at the scene. again, we're not able to confirm that information with police, but as soon as we get new information, we of course will bring it to you. in san francisco, there's still a lot of damage left behind after a group of thieves slammed a vehicle through the front of a corner store, all to reportedly steal lottery tickets. and it was, as you see, all caught on camera today in the bay. ginger
6:03 am
conejero saab joins us live in the city this morning. so much growing frustration over this trend, not only of break-ins, but this one was pretty aggressive. that's right laura, rightfully so. this isn't the first time that this happened to a corner store on 17th avenue and balboa. that's in the richmond district here in the city. and that's typically a quiet residential neighborhood. but the store owner says that this was an attempt to get several hundred dollars worth of tickets. this is not the first time. last time there was an attempt to get over $10,000 worth of tickets. the amount has changed. this time, but not the amount of frustration. and you can see for yourself the moments that that truck pummeled through the front of this corner store that happened around 930 tuesday night. now, seconds later, you see a man walk in, and moments after that, he walks out with $350 worth of scratch off lottery tickets in hand. according to the store's owner, thieves took just the lottery
6:04 am
tickets. it's just sad that you know san francisco and the bay area in general. it's hard to be a small business owner. now, other surveillance video shows the moments before the crash into the store. it appears another car and a couple other people were checking it out. but it wasn't just the thieves that did their own surveillance. neighbors helped police identify the getaway vehicles and their tips paid off. sfpd says plain clothes officers spotted the suspect vehicle near i-80 eastbound at octavia boulevard, and continued surveillance as the vehicles traveled to oakland. the suspect vehicle was disabled near eighth and center streets in oakland. a total of four people were arrested. now, not as much luck for a nearby cigarettes or cheaper store that is about two blocks away in the same neighborhood. thieves recently broke in not once, but
6:05 am
twice in the past year. now the store owner there did not want to go on camera, but the owner did say that the thieves have gotten away with more than $100,000 in goods and cash when it comes to both burglaries, no arrests have been made in that case. as you mentioned, laura, growing frustration in this trend. you can really see why. completely, completely. all right. thanks for the very latest, ginger. you see, leaders are downplaying a vote by regions happening to today approve the possibility of receiving military grade weapons and ammunition for campus polic. but, you know, some questioned the timing, especially in light of the recent protests, which shook up some of the uc campuses. as of 2021, state law requires all law enforcement agencies to publicly request approval for new weapons and ammo, but uc police are not believed to be ready to do so. in part, a statement given to today in the bay by uc officers,

the uc office says, quote, this is a routine agenda item that is not related to any particular incident and ucpd equipment is not military surplus, nor is it military grade or designed for military use. the university's police departments do not use equipment from the u.s. department of defense. end quote. let's turn things now to decision 2024 and the race for the white house. former president donald trump addressing a crowd in long island, new york. this is his first rally since the second apparent assassination attempt. he doubled down on false claims about haitian immigrants eating pets in springfield, ohio. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris, addressing issues of the economy and immigration with the congressional hispanic caucus today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington following both candidates hitting heavy on the campaign right brie. that's right. good morning marcus. well it's less than 50 days to go until election day. both

6:08 am
very, very concerned about. speaking to a gathering of hispanic leaders, vice president harris stressed tackling border security and immigration reform. understand we can do both. create an earned pathway to citizenship and ensure our border is secure. financial security remains top of mind for most americans, and a key election issue. the federal reserve announcing welcome news that it's slashing interest rates by half a point. this decision reflects our growing confidence that, with an appropriate recalibration of our policy stance, strength in the labor market can be maintained. this marks the fed's first rate cut since the early days of the covid 19 pandemic. an aggressive start to easing concerns about inflation and the powerful union teamsters. they made a surprise move over refusing to endorse either candidate. this election cycle. that's something that hasn't happened since 1996.

marcus very interesting brie jackson in washington this morning. brie thank you. it is 608 today, marking the final day of dreamforce at san francisco's moscone center. but some attendees may be experiencing a little ear ringing this morning. that's if they attended last night's big private concert inside oracle park. this is the closest that we could get, but it included imagine dragons, pink and kygo. we expect almost half a million hotel nights in the city. we're really excited about this convention and our restaurants, our small businesses and more importantly, we want the experience of, you know, all the great speakers and all the different forums and of course, the concert with pink. and we want that to be exciting. and what we want people to walk away with is a well-rounded experience. exactly what we're trying to make downtown into today's closing day events include a sit down chat with salesforce ceo marc benioff and

billionaire mark cuban. also among today's speakers, actress kerry washington and ayesha curry taking a live look at san jose this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that forecast for us. we saw some rain yesterday. the question is, has it moved out? it's very close by so we're going to keep an eye on it. but then for much of the bay area we're going to be clearing out for today. we can see the low clouds we're starting with over san francisco still misting and drizzling there. and that will continue up until about 8 to 9:00. and then a little bit more sunshine with highs there staying in the 60s for this afternoon. cool in the city, but as you make your way away from the coastal clouds, it will be warmer with highs in the low 80s in concord and up to 77 in san jose. napa today 80 degrees. really nice, but it will be warming up over the next couple of days, especially in the inland valleys. and it will feel more like summer by the weekend. so mike, we want to hit the road for the weekend. what

are gas prices looking like? no unfortunately today's best is up again from yesterday's in san jose. we're going to start with 429 at quick serve on alum rock avenue. that's $0.10 higher than san jose's low yesterday in the north bay solano county's best is also 429. that's in vallejo. the middle number. we're going to shout out bond fair on sacramento street. but you have a couple more options at that price. and in alameda county, fremont's lowest listed is 435 at vargas on grimmer boulevard. you can get those reports for your specific city. if you're looking around gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we continue to follow this alert on the peninsula. we'll take you to southbound 101 as you're traveling south past elor and through brisbane. better news instead of three lanes blocked, we have just your far right lane. your slow lane is blocked south past the scene. traffic is starting to move a little bit better, but bayshore boulevard is still a surface street option for you. watch it. it's been crowded for a while. their crash investigation continues heading south there and south 880 right around eighth street. a crash blocked two lanes. now, in your commute back to you. all right.

thanks, mike. okay, marcus, how many moons does the earth have? well what i remember one. well, not for long. up next, the new neighbor. we can expect to orbit around our planet in just weeks. all right, i'm intrigued. okay. plus rate cuts. you get a cut, you get a cut, i get a cut. we'll take a look at that. let's go out to the futures this morning as well to see what wall street thinks. oh, yeah. wall street very happy with that. plus it's time to play family feud celebrity edition. here's your host, steve harvey. yeah. okay okay. now welcome to celebrity family. such a fun show that it is. but you know what? when we come back, we're going to talk about faces. both fresh and familiar. coming to saturday night live for its historic 50th anniversary season. and that could mean more impressions like this. stick with us. we'll be right back

the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, th exploit the system.. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. morning. let's check out the tri-valley. we're heading to livermore with a look at our day planner. starting out at 9:00, it will be partly cloudy. 61 degrees, and it will warm up nicely with all of that sunshine

and a light wind. we're heading to the upper 70s and briefly hitting the low 80s. now we will have some much hotter temperatures ahead. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates coming up. and live. look at the san mateo bridge westbound out of hayward is the commute direction toward the peninsula in the east bay may be slow getting there through san leandro and hayward. another crash that blocks a couple of lanes southbound there. meanwhile, on the peninsula where this bridge will end, highway 101 moves smoothly. better news for brisbane, but the alert continues for a crash in the southbound direction. well very good morning to you. happy thursday to you as well. the big headline obviously is the interest rate cut. i'll get to that in just a second. this is salesforce. dreamforce continues its last day in san francisco. mike's been telling us how to get around traffic at howard. and third these are shares of truth social traded under the name djt. that's donald trump's initials. all time low since the merger. and there's a reason for this. the

6:18 am
of 113 economists expected that full half point critics of the fed, who include donald trump, will smell something political here. but this was a regularly scheduled meeting. jay powell explained the reasoning behind the cut, including concerns about employment. remember, that's the fed's other job and the so-called dot plot shows more cuts coming. the fed is supposed to be independent. it's designed that way. trump, for his part, actually thinks the central bank should be more connected to the white house, with the president getting some sort of say on interest rates. iphone 16 goes on sale tomorrow without many of the ai features that apple touted at its announcement last week. apple plans to roll out that later, but the phones will be upgraded to handle that. ai older phones will not be capable of it. the reviews are starting to roll in. reviewers note without that new ai, there's not a lot to talk about. better battery, better camera. camera button. new colors. cris velasco over at the washington post says, if you're

just kiefer. well, there's t-minus nine days until the premiere of a new season of saturday night live, and this year, it's extra special as the show is celebrating its 50th season. first five celebrity lineups are out this season, starting with jean smart from hacks and designing women, joined by musical guest jelly roll. another great pair of ariana grande and stevie nicks. michael keaton and billie eilish. birds of a feather right there, along with former snl writer john mulaney and rising pop star chappell roan. should be fun. season premiere is september 28th, right here on nbc bay area. and here's a great perk. you can watch it live at 830. and then there's that encore presentation at 1130, so you can watch east coast time. the west coast time have a lot of laughs here. also trending something you may have thought you'd never hear. earth will have a second moon very soon. you're probably like, what? what? okay, don't get too excited there. this is only temporary. as time reports that

starting next week, an asteroid will be orbiting earth. scientists have been dubbing this a, quote, mini moon. the asteroid will eventually pull away from the gravitational pull, but that won't happen until november. sadly, although we'll know the second moon is up there, it still won't be. it will be actually a little bit too small for the naked eye to see. so looking up at the sky, you're going like, well, i don't see it. where is it? yeah, but you do have plans to go to the planetarium. the chabot space center, something like that. if you don't have a telescope because they are saying that, you know it will be visible for a couple of months. so if we do have some all clear nights, you have a telescope or something, you may be able to see it there. i just told you so. yeah. witnessing history. all right, so it's not here yet. we're seeing a lot of clouds, so we are starting out this morning with a storm system spinning across the region. this is what brought us our rain chances yesterday. now it's just to our south. but we're still seeing a lot of activity across the
6:22 am
cierra. some thunderstorms firing up, and there's also some thunderstorms just to the south of the bay area. this is right on highway 101. it's been training over those same areas, producing some heavy rain and some lightning as well. and we are looking very close to the south county with some spotty rain right around hollister. and some of the models show that some of that could make it into gilroy within the next couple of hours, and we'll see that, and then it will quickly clear out as we go throughout today. and a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures headed for the upper 70s there. so a quick warm up. we'll see a high of 71 in oakland today, 80 in napa. and a lot of these temperatures still slightly cooler than normal, but will be heating up this weekend. will be in the mid 70s for fremont hayward tomorrow, 85 for fairfield and san francisco. not seeing much of a change will be in the upper 60s here, but then going into saturday, that's when the north bay starts to feel those 90s and mid to upper 80s for napa and 87 for martinez in
6:23 am
fairfield on saturday afternoon. it's going to be 91 degrees. so we're going from the nice cool weather and rain chances to a significant warm up for the weekend that looks to last for a few days, as this high pressure will be a slow mover, and then into next week, we'll eventually get some relief to toward the middle to end of next week. so take a look at san jose. we're going to have one more big spike in temperatures where we're going to see highs in the 90s from monday into tuesday, and then cooling down into the 80s for the middle of next week. so a lot of our inland valleys will have hot temperatures this weekend, but the coastline and san francisco will be much milder. mike, you're still tracking that unexpected jam out there? yeah, and it's not here. this is the expected jam at the bay bridge. and good news, you can see some movement. we'll take you to the maps where we don't have a big problem. we do have the bill for the east shore freeway. there may be a new crash into berkeley. so watch west 80 right past gilman for some activity. meanwhile, we're

looking at walnut creek with just no problems for the 24 interchange. just a little slow for 242 coming into pleasant hill. and that's pretty standard. the big deal. it continues to be on the peninsula south 101 one lane blocked. now instead of three as you pass by a lane away. back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. a little known landmark. making some big waves in san francisco. we're talking about a clock installed in 1915, which has been vandalized multiple times. up next on today in the bay, we'll hear from the unofficial guardian of the landmark and his mission to preserve history. we'll be right back

area forward on plans to fix a beloved clocks. and let's just say the repairs are long past time you probably seen it yourself. if you've ever walked along market street near the historic flood building at powell street, the clock is called the samuels clock. it was first installed in 1915 by a nearby jeweler. more recently, it's been the repeated target of vandals and it no longer works. karen flood is a fifth generation in the current flood building president. her father helped preserve the clock, even though the family never owned it. last night, she expressed some of the recent frustrations to our raj mathai. he loved the area and he loved the building and he was a real steward for, for the building and for san francisco. so it really upset

him that this, this clock was not working, not telling the right time. and then also repeatedly getting, you know, smashed and vandalized, so it's an important landmark and it's not our clock, but honestly, as a steward, you know, trying to follow in his footsteps, we'd like to see it fixed. she says there are multiple issues in play, including resolving ownership of the clock. in the past, the city has talked about buying it, and if that can happen, volunteers may 1st day help to keep it functional. you can watch the full interview from our homepage nbcbayarea.com. we'll be right back

police are teaming up with those san jose business owners to combat crime with the help of cameras. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from police headquarters this morning. tell us more about this program, bob. good morning laura. we're talking about businesses, small businesses within the specific neighborhood of alum rock. later this morning, it will be at a press conference with the san jose police department behind me here to announce their participation in a new camera safety program. this is a pilot program to connect san jose police with any available crime video. and this would be video that people would be sending out by registering their cameras, either at their businesses or home. and they would be providing extra eyes, so to speak, and connecting san jose police officers with that video. now, this is the kind of video sfpd is hoping to access. this is video captured this week at willow glen's burdick angeles la villa dahle. the burglar there was caught on camera from several angles, breaking through the front door going to the cash register. the thief didn't get

much cash but did leave. unfortunately, a very expensive mess. in addition to capturing surveillance video, the willow glen business association wants more patrols and better lightin. i think it's happening maybe at between 1 and 3 in the morning. so perhaps if they could be cruising around here at that time, it would help dissuade these people from doing what they are doing. trini's cafe in south san jose got security cameras and a hard drive for free. this was back in february when the city expanded its so-called capture crime program. in all, 50 small businesses joined that pilot program with the city footing the $75,000 bill for it. the cameras record continuously and store the footage for about 30 days to capture crime program. first launched in may of 2022. reporting live here outside san jose police headquarters, bob redell today in the bay. yeah, the crime's been hurting a lot of small businesses. thanks for

recent days. antioch interim police chief is now assessing and assigning two different or two officers. i should say, to patrol that area full time for at least the next week. martinez is taking a harsher stance on encampments. the cities will now clear areas even if shelter is not available. this is a trend we've been seeing across the bay area. it is all following a decision by the supreme court, which gives cities the power to enforce sleeping bans in public spaces. it also comes after governor gavin newsom's executive order to remove encampments across the state, or risks losing funding. new at six at at&t is set to remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of lead from lake tahoe. this is the san francisco chronicle reporting that there are about six miles of underwater cables that run along the west shore of the lake. back in 2021, the lake tahoe sport fishing alliance sued and are alleging that the
