the east bay. we've got team coverage on the impact that it could have on your plans. plus, the final home stand at the coliseum. the emotional and bitter end nearing as a's fans prepare for the a's last game in oakland. this is today in the bay. sad to hear that, but happy it is friday. want to say good morning to you all? i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with mike because he's got the workarounds for that 680 closure we're expecting this weekend. plus a live report from bob redell. but first, yes, it's friday and it's the first day of fall on sunday, but it's not going to feel like it. no. we've been talking a lot about the heat cranking up and looking at some hotter temperatures for the inland valleys going into our weekend, but right now it's pretty even across the bay area with upper 50s and low 60s to start. mostly cloudy in napa we are going to see temperatures at 9:00 in the mid 50s. nice cool morning. and then at 1:00 at 72

degrees, we're headed for the upper 70s here today. still really nice. and we're looking at some low 80s for the interior valleys. livermore today 83 degrees and 78 in san jose, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s. so we'll talk about those changes ahead and our weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. marcus and laura. all right. we'll check back with you. kari. well, starting tonight, a potential weekend traffic nightmare for anyone who needs to travel between the east bay and south bay. past 680. closures have really looked like this. between pleasanton and sunol. but you know what? this weekend's closure will involve a separate part of southbound 680 with a lot more drivers to navigate. so let's check in with today in the bay's bob redell. he's live near that dublin interchange, and caltrans is really trying hard to get the word out about this closure. bob they are. so let's put up a map so you can understand the section of roadway we are talking about. good morning to you, marcus. laura. we're talking about just the southbound direction of 680
6:02 am
between al costa boulevard and the 586 80 interchange. double interchange? it's not too far behind me. that closure starting tonight at 9:00 and running until 4:00 monday morning. this is to give caltrans workers the freedom and time to repave that stretch of roadway without having to worry about traffic zipping by, caltrans tells us they're getting a lot of work done in a short amount of time by shutting down this road, we actually managed to shrink 40 nights of nighttime closures into one weekend. caltrans says two more 680 closures are scheduled at the beginning and middle of next month. the overall repaving project of 680 will wrap up in december of 2026. we've also published an i-680 closure guide on our website at nbcbayarea.com. just click on the i-680 closure on our homepage. trending bar reporting live here in dublin.

bob redell today in the bay. all right. good info for folks traveling this weekend. yeah. let's head over to mike inouye right now because, mike, you're tracking some of the alternative routes that people can take because it's still going to be pretty busy out there. a lot of folks need to use that area will be an issue. now, a note this morning your drive is fine. this afternoon. everything is still open. as bob said tonight about 9:00. so any time after 8:00, plan on using an alternate route. southbound 680 from acosta at the top. consider that closed down to the dublin interchange. that's five 8580 still accessible both west and eastbound. both directions are fine through the interchange. it is 680 access there. you'll have to shift over to something like san ramon road, which is a major surface street. as you're traveling through the area. that is a surface street, though only two lanes at most parts of that. it's a divided roadway, but that will be much less traffic volume possible than 680 if you're heading over to the a's game, for example, over the weekend, and you normally go down 580 and come back up 880, try this. get over to 24. most north of there would typically do that anyway,
6:04 am
as we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic down to the area. and if you're coming over from livermore, you go 84 there. you go. back to you. good to know. thank you very much, mike. it is 603 right now. and new overnight. at least one person is under arrest after a shooting in brentwood. it happened a little before 9:00 last night on sand creek road. police say a swat team helped make the arrest inside a home. others were also detained. one man was shot in the stomach. police say his injury is not considered life threatening. developing this morning out of southern california, eight firefighters are in the hospital, six of them in serious condition. this is after the fire truck was involved in a rollover crash. it happened last night in irvine in orange county. the chp saying that that truck and another vehicle swerved, avoiding a ladder there in the road. that truck struck a guardrail before rolling over. the team was returning to its home base after 12 hour shift on the front lines of the massive airport wildfire. members of a peninsula family are heartbroken now, struggling

to determine their future after the death of a woman as she was struck by a car. it happened last week on the border of san mateo and burlingame. a driver struck and killed yolanda villar in an incident police believe was accidental, but she leaves behind an 18 year old daughter with special needs named stephanie. her cousin explains how the family is now struggling. she did everything in her power to make sure that not only did stephanie have the resources she needed, but also that she felt loved and supported and felt like a normal kid. she doesn't necessarily understand the concept of death, so she had asked my mom over the phone, why her mom had left her. she also says stephanie's aunt is now caring for her along with her own special needs son. family is asking for help from the community and they're raising money online. 605 for you this morning. turning now to the race for the white house, where vice president kamala harris makes her seventh visit to the battleground state of

right now start at about $65. all right, well, if you didn't know, fall starts on sunday, but it's not going to feel like it. but it looks like it here. but keep the flipflops handy. all right. and we're going to have 12 hours of sunlight. the long one. yeah. so we're going to explain why we call it equinox. so let's get a look at what we like to see. the changing of the fall leaves and the fall season officially begins on sunday morning right at 544. now, as you wake up, you're like, okay, now today is the first day of fall, but we are going to have some very warm temperatures. now we call it equinox because of the earth's axis. that's tilted at 23.5 degrees, kind of shifted a little bit. so twice a year there is the time when we have the earth's sun or the sun's rays are perpendicular to the equator. so at times it hits the northern hemisphere right overhead. we see that during the
6:10 am
summer. and then the southern hemisphere gets the most direct sun rays during the winter. for spring and fall, those first days, the sun rays are directly on the equator. so that's why we call it equinox. we have the equal amount of daylight as well as nighttime. so we've been talking a lot about the temperatures, how unfortunately, even as we shift the seasons, it's not going to really translate to our temperatures where we're going to have some summer heat continuing and looking at those highs for today in the 80s and 90s inland and getting even hotter as we approach that first day of fall. as we start out in the morning and welcoming in the season, the afternoon will show us that summer is very much in control as our highs head for the low 90s, so we're going to take a closer look at this and what's ahead for next week. mike's been showing us where we can fill up for less before we make those weekend plans. yeah, less. but the prices are higher because as bob talked about earlier this week, there's a supply chain
6:11 am
issue for some maintenance refineries. we're looking at the best price in the bay area right now. and that's the outlier there. we'll look at contra costa county with 419 at concord's valero on willow pass road. everything else in the county is higher than that. the best price in the south bay is 429. right now we're going to call out sunnyvale with national petroleum on old san francisco road today. and the low is higher in marin county. the best price there is 439 in san rafael at elite gas and mart on ritter street. you can check the prices in your area or report those prices at gasbuddy.com on the roadway. we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic. for the most part it is friday, so we are seeing your expected lighter volume of traffic. except for here, the bay bridge continues with this weird pattern of slowing getting in toward treasure island. no incidents reported by chp. a lot of folks slowing getting toward the island itself. you see it here. the incline is moving a little more smoothly, really gumming up right around the tower. again, no incidents reported by chp or any other agencies. we see. but

alto and what to expect throughout the next several hours. we're right now at 57 degrees and cloudy, and we'll start to see that sun peeking out around 9:00. we're clear the rest of the day and our temperatures matching what we had yesterday, but we are in for a warm up this weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. and that backup on the bay bridge just found out that we did have a disabled vehicle on the span
6:16 am
while that's being addressed. the metering lights were also turned on and it looks like they're a little slower. the backup formed very quickly out of oakland. we'll get a status update and show you the progress on the span. coming up, we'll check back with you. thank you. kerry and mike. it is quarter after six right now. wall street is set to open lower after the markets rallied yesterday as investors reacted positively to the federal reserve's decision to cut interest rates by half a point. the rally was widespread, with ai chip giant nvidia powering gains. the s&p, along with olive garden parent company darden restaurants. the fed cut data showing fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week, adding to a lot of that enthusiasm, lower rates helped markets by making it easier for households and businesses to borrow money and boosting prices of all types of investments from stocks to bonds, gold and cryptocurrencies. but it looks like for the future is holding right now that the markets may open down. well, shares of nike are poised to rally as the company says ceo john donahoe is stepping down. he's being

quarter, those numbers again rose. but it appears the rate is finally slowing. the latest data from a real estate firm, cbre, shows that office vacancies rose a half percent point to more than 37% one year ago. the vacancy rate was 34%. many will point out the major problem here. san francisco lagging and recovering from the pandemic compared to other cities. here are the second quarter vacancy rates compared to other major cities. it's now less than 25% in la, chicago and houston. manhattan now just over 15%. but insiders say in san francisco, there's a small silver lining. the hope here is that this will come to a slow and steady release towards the end of this year, and we'll see activity picking up in the next year. now the momentum is coming from some ai companies in the city. we've talked about this for past quarters now, talking about it this quarter. close to 60 companies. they're signing new leases or renewing leases,

morning with upper 50s low clouds. it is 61, in san jose. as you're heading out the door and we're going to see the high today up to 78 degrees. so still really nice and up to 82 in morgan hill. we'll be in the upper seconds for cupertino, parts of the east bay in the low to mid 80s this afternoon. it will be a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. antioch 85 degrees and in martinez 8175. in hayward and 74 in redwood city. half moon bay 64 today and looking at some mid to upper 60s in san francisco. our north bay highs will be warmer than yesterday. 80 in sonoma and 93 in ukiah. going into our weekend. we're going to see a lot of changes coming in hotter temperatures as we welcome in fall. it's going to hit a high of 92 in napa on sunday, and even hotter on monday. but that's the peak of the heat going into the rest of next week. it's still pretty warm, but it won't be as hot as we'll see on monday. so we're enjoying
6:23 am
the weekend even though we're having to plan around some of the hotter temperatures. or maybe heading to some of the cooler destinations like san francisco, where we're going to see highs in the low to mid 70s and then upper 70s for monday, and then coming back to the 60s for the middle next week. mike, you've been focused on the slowing across the bay bridge. yeah, we expect a lighter build here. but it was a quick big build over at the toll plaza because of all the slowing we saw across the span itself. special agent henry over at our news desk. henry made some calls and found out there was indeed a disabled vehicle across the span being addressed by caltrans. caltrans crews. and we look like a smoother drive now, but still congested. getting over in toward treasure island. those speed sensors are starting to spread out now. the congestion spreading from before treasure island over toward the san francisco approach. i believe they've cleared those lanes and we will have back to your normal build over the next half hour. back to you. thank you. mike. all right. 623 for you this morning next here on today in the bay nbc bay area, responds

outside the courthouse ahead of that hearing. the driver of a car that struck and killed a woman last night in san jose is said to be cooperating with police. it happened at stevens creek boulevard and hanson avenue, close to valley fair mall. the woman has not yet been identified. traffic was tied up in the area as police investigated. nearly one year after his cars were pulled from san francisco streets, cruise vehicles are again resuming bay area operations, but this time it's in a different location. crews yesterday announced a small fleet of cars are now operating in sunnyvale, and mountain view, but with some big differences here. for one, the vehicles are manned with human drivers and autonomous testing will not start until later this fall. also, passengers are not allowed until the company receives new permits. leaders in each city are enthused about the new partnership, but some of those residents are skeptical. i would honestly rather have them tested in san francisco, like you're driving in a more peaceful area. i don't know how you can really get an accurate

have really been working on this for the past seven years. we have indeed, this new fleet is clean, green and serene, and we couldn't be happier about rolling it out this weekend. this corridor has been in use for 160 years and starting tomorrow for the first time ever, it will be 100% zero emission. yeah, that's a big deal. laura was just saying it's a monumental shift. talk to us about the features on this new train. i mean, clean, green. we're looking at a very nice, clean train here this morning. absolutely brand new with a lot of great new modern amenities right over here. we've got both our onboard digital displays and our security cameras. that's important. we've got wi-fi on board. some people have been asking for a long time. we've got plugs under every forward facing seat and not to mention we've got faster moving trains that can provide more frequent service throughout the day. yeah. talk to us about those faster trains because travel times have now really gone down from san francisco, which is where we are. this train is headed to san jose in just minutes from now. how long are the travel times changing? our locals are taking 75 minutes to
6:37 am
make the whole trip down from 100. our express is making it from san francisco to san jose in under an hour. so this is now the fastest way to get up and down the peninsula. i will get to work better on time. all right, let's take a seat here because this is nice and comfy. this time we have coffee with us. i want to ask you a question, because you have these new trains. what are you doing with the old ones? it's the old ones, actually. if you go to caltrans store.com, you have a chance to buy them. our old fleet is going out of commissio. so rather than sell it off for scrap, we want to make sure that collectors and fans of history can find a new use for them. wow, you're actually selling them. how much are they going for? it's. well, you know, it's you got to you got to ask to find out. there's a lot of details going into it, but, you know, if you're looking for the perfect collector's item or you need a place to set up your model train, i've got just the spot. all right. okay well, that gives a whole new meaning to a new train set for christmas. all right. thank you so much, dan liebermann from caltrain. guys, we're saying goodbye to the choo

6:40 am
for anything outdoors this weekend. yeah, there's so much going on in the city this weekend from oktoberfest to green day to a lot of cultural celebrations. i mean, yeah, it's going to be busy out there. let's take a look at the weather, which looks to cooperate. it's going to be in the upper 60s for our high today. tonight in the mid 50s. so be sure to have the layers as the temperature cools down. we're going back up to 70 tomorrow. and continue to warm throughout the weekend. by sunday we're going to see a high of 76 degrees. if you want some warmer weather, you may be heading to lafayette for the art and wine festival downtown lafayette, both on saturday and sunday. sunday is a little bit warmer, but not by much. we're in the mid 80s and mostly sunny and then heading to martinez for pride this weekend. tomorrow it starts at 11 a.m. at waterfront park. it will be a comfortable 71 degrees, but quickly warming up as we go throughout the day. and by the time that will be wrapping up, it will be 83 degrees during the middle of the day. if your weekend plans take

you to palisades tahoe, that is not a painting. that's a live picture this morning looking at the cierra. it is a beautiful. it is a little chilly out there. we'll see highs in the upper 60s for today and then back down to the 30s tonight. and a high of 72 degrees tomorrow. mike, you're seeing some unexpected delays this friday. yeah folks we had the delay across the bay bridge. it's improving an earlier disabled vehicle there. and now a disabled vehicle across the richmond bridge. so unexpectedly slow on 580 west over towards san rafael. prepared for that delay. meanwhile, the rest of your friday is looking good. everything's open through the tri valley right now, but prepare for another delay starting tonight at nine all the way through the weekend until monday. hopefully clear by 4 a.m. they're doing that repaving project that entails doing a lot of roadwork on south. 688 will be closed from acosta down to 585 80 itself remains open. to get through the area, you can use san ramon road. it's only two lanes, though, for that major surface street, so keep that in mind. not as much
6:42 am
capacity as 680. allow extra time through the area if you're north of there out of walnut creek, they use 24 and get over to 580 or the nimitz. back to you. thanks, mike. 641 back on earth and with a story to tell. next we're going to hear from the first all civilian space crew from polaris dawn with an inside look at that historic mission. plus a farmers market for cannabis. north bay festival opening up to the public for the first time this weekend. and the san francisco 49ers get back on the field for their first divisional matchup of the season. while we can expect from their game against the rams, that's ahead. you're watching today in the bay
6:45 am
polaris dawn crew was the first all civilian team to conduct a spacewalk. spending five days orbiting the earth, the team tested new spacesuits and completed 40 research experiments focused on space travel. this morning, they're telling the today show team about what they saw and experienced. i mean, it was an unbelievable experience, and we were taking about 14,000 people from space along with us. i mean, what an undertaking. no one's built new spacesuits to do spacewalks in in 40 years. yeah, because it's hard. yeah. so we knew everyone's worked hard on it for two and a half years. we know where the future of these
6:46 am
suits is going. there is so much we stand to learn out there. i mean, we have just scratched the surface. and they just scratched the surface of that interview as well. catch the full interview. coming up at 7:00 on the today show. well, one of the bay area's most unique conventions returning this weekend with a new twist that will allow you to partake in sonoma county's hall of flowers. cannabis market is getting underway a few hours from now at the fairgrounds in santa rosa. as always, the trade show will include pot vendors. but you know what? this year, for the first time, the general public also invited, but only for tomorrow's events. organizers say that they'll be more attractions. they're meant to ensure that the festival is all about more than just cannabis. the person in the friend group that's really like super passionate about cannabis, they could bring their friends and there was other stuff to do, right? so we have included in your ticket price. we have free carnaval rides, free games. we've built a movie theater, we've built six different art installations. we have a stage
6:47 am
with djs and art all day long. we have the food, experiences, you know, which again are not infused. so just normal, delicious food from the chefs all over the country. it's like going to the county fair for adults. maybe you can make it a date night too, depending on what you're into. all right. so general admission tickets are for the festival. they're $75 for tomorrow. they are still available if you're interested. okay. what about a family friendly event here? better way to celebrate team usa's olympic gymnastics triumph, then with the greatest of all time herself. you can do it tomorrow night when the g.o.a.t. tour descends on sap center. it's actually called the gold over america tour, and it is a gymnastics extravaganza. 11 time olympic gold medalist simone biles, one of the gymnasts taking part along with two of her recent teammates, jordan chiles and jade carey. biles explains how she came up with the tour name. my friend actually made the name for the tour because we were kind of stuck on it for a while, so
6:48 am
we're like, what can we do? so it's an acronym for gold over america tour go! and i just thought that was perfect. and i was like, absolutely, because it's not about winning medals. it's really about each and every one of us have a story to tell, and each of each and every one of us have a piece of gold inside of us. we just have to figure out what that is and let it shine. the tour started earlier this week in southern california. it will stop in 30 cities over the next seven weeks. tickets for tomorrow night show start at $50. well, when the niners take on the rams on sunday in l.a, it will no doubt feel more like levi's stadium. that's because so many of the niners fans are flocking to l.a. to cheer on the team. yeah, absolutely. you know what the team is going to try to bounce back from that rough outing last time over in minnesota last sunday. nbc, bay area and telemundo 48. carlos eustis is here with us this morning for a preview this morning. and carlos the niners three of his biggest stars. they're out. yeah that's right. we reached the third week of the
6:49 am
nfl season. the niners are on a one and one record after defeating the new york jets in week one. then they pick up that loss. you guys talked about in minnesota. and this week they have their first divisional matchup when they face the l.a. rams at sofi stadium, a place that has been very good for the niners. however, the week started with some bad news for san francisco. the team, as marcus was saying, was informed that deebo samuel would not be available for this game. and the niners head coach, kyle shanahan, told us that deebo has a calf strain and he will be out against the rams. the 49ers are already missing their superstar running back christian mccaffrey, who was placed on the injured reserve last week and will be sidelined for last at least four weeks. and to make matters worse, the team also was informed that the star tight end george kittle and the number one corner charvarius ward, did not practice yesterday. kittle felt some tightness in his hamstring while ward was just sore. overall however, even though both players are listed as questionable, there is still a possibility that they can suit up on sunday. but if there's a team suffering with more
6:50 am
injuries than the niners, that's definitely the l.a. rams. the southern california team lost their star wide receiver cooper kupp last week with an ankle injury and prior to that, they were already without their second standard receiver, puka nacua. their starting tight end tyler higbee, three of their starting offensive linemen and at least six players in the secondary have injuries. besides the notorious absences in the rams roster, the niners will also try to take home field advantage and that's it's expected because there's at least 63% of sofi stadium that will be dressed in red and gold on sunday. not for anything they call in. levi south. the niners are undefeated at sofi stadium in the regular season play since the building opened in 2020, and the only san francisco loss in la since 2019 happened in 2021, when the niners lost the nfc championship. and don't forget, you can join aaron brooks and former niners safety donte whitner for a complete game day coverage on sunday that starts at noon on nbc sports bay area, and we will also have the post game show coverage, hopefully
6:51 am
with a niners win, because out of all the things when you're that depleted, you need to get the win, especially on that divisional matchup. i know, no kidding. it's so early in the season to have all these injuries. i mean, it seems pretty normal for the season in general for the nfl. the niners were very lucky that in 2023, the injuries were absent for most of the season. that's true. we're spoiled. right, this time around, i think they're playing the long game because we know that the games that matter are in december. so if you can actually hold on to christian mccaffrey, that's a good thing. of course we will. levi's south south second home. all right. might feel like la by the temperatures on sunday around here. yes. it's going to be heating up here as well as in socal. so we're going to be watching a lot of changes here as we get a look live in san jose. starts out cloudy. our usual morning. it will be clearing out around 9 to 10:00 and our temperatures warming up. we're back to some of the same weather that we saw yesterday, so it was so nice out there and
6:52 am
it only made it into the upper 70s. now we're going to see some warmer spots for the inland valleys and concord expected to reach 84 degrees 88 in vacaville. and we're starting to see some of those low 90s farther north. but a lot more of the 90s going into the weekend for the inland areas in the mid 80s for tomorrow for morgan hill and san martin, 80 in palo alto, while san francisco will see a high of 73. 85 in napa. and then, as we take it into our first day of fall, it gets even hotter. 91 in concord, 9090 degrees in livermore and 90 in gilroy. so taking a look ahead. napa will reach the peak of the heat on sunday, 98 degrees. so that's our first full day of fall. and then even looking ahead through much of next week, it's not yet going to feel like fall. the temperatures haven't yet looked at the calendar, so we're going to see still some hot weather continuing as we go into the next few days. and in
6:53 am
san francisco at least, that's where we can go escape the inland heat. and mike, it's unusually slow in san jose. yeah, the weather needs a reminder about when it is, and that traffic needs a reminder. it's friday as well. jammed up north 101, this crash clearing from the slow lane around the 880 and 101 itself, that's pushing more traffic over to 280. so there's a build this friday is tougher in the south bay and across san mateo bridge. you're fine. bay bridge and richmond bridge are recovering from earlier stalls. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well happening now, a mystery of dead ducks in milpitas. the city is working to figure out why some of the ducks are dying at hall memorial park. as of right now, about 12 to 14 ducks have died. city officials say they're monitoring water levels and working with the department of fish and wildlife. at this time, the police are not investigating. and we're back in minutes with a look at those top stories this morning, including a weekend traffic alert. the work is set to get underway on i-680 and the impact it may have on your weekend plans. but first, our school shout out
