80s for much of the north bay. and some low to mid 80s for the interior. east bay as well as the north bay. now we're going to see temperatures heating up this weekend, even though san jose is going to be mild with a high of 82. some of our valleys >> guys, you know what tim and, guys, you know what time it is. it's time to talk about sunday night football night in america. we're headed on down to atlanta. we've got the chiefs taking on the falcons. if al was here, he would make some kind of bird noise. can we make a bird noise? that's all i got, guys. we need al to come back and do the sunday night football night forecast. it will be clear and warm. temperatures about 80 degrees. >> all right, dylan. thank you. coming up next, are you stuck in financial quicksand? vicky is here to walk us through tips to dig yourself out. but, first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:37 am
welcome back. this morning on "today's consumer," how you can dig yourself out of financial quicksand. here is what happened. yesterday vicky mentioned this phrase when she joined us, and she talked about credit card interest rates sitting at 23%. take a listen to what she said. >> think about it. that means if you spend $100 and you don't pay it off right away, you owe $123. that's financial quick sand. >> quick sand. >> i love how you said it. quick sand. >> the phrase touched a lot of our viewers. vicky, thanks for coming back. i want to start with this e-mail you got from a viewer. we will call him scott. he and his wife are 60, homeowners with $35,000 in debt. credit score is 620. they want to pay off their debt
8:38 am
but because of their credit scores, two local banks won't give them personal loans, and home equity loans won't offer them cash. what should they do? >> first, thank you to scott for being so candid and writing in. he's not alone. right? there is $1 trillion in credit card debt for americans right now. we can't borrow the money to pay off our credit card debt because our credit scores are too low. we can't borrow the money to pay off our credit card debt. it is this vicious, crazy cycle, right? so we went to the experts for credit counseling. they said, good job, scott. you went to two banks. go to more. there are lenders out there. expand your search. they will work with people who have average or low credit. they said also, try to transfer your credit card balance to another company because here's the thing. even if you can't get that 0% sbr introductory rate, you might get a lower rate than you're paying now. find a strategy. stick to it. chip away at that $35,000.
8:39 am
even afterwards, if there is some money left over, pay above the minimum payment and never miss your payment. the nfcc says missing payments accounts for 35% of your credit score. if you are paying on time, that's going to boost your credit score, and that's very important. finally, there are nonprofit resources out there. they will sit down with you and help you craft a specific plan to pay down your credit card debt. use those nonprofits. >> one thing you suggested was negotiating, negotiating with lenders. i think people are intimidated by that. what do i do? how do i call? what if i don't have the confidence? what is the way to do it? >> right. am i going to call mastercard and say, lower my interest rates? yes. be nice about it. call that 800 number. call in the morning because usually the experienced veteran customer service agents are working in the morning, not at night. that's when people are training. if you get the sense the person you are talking to doesn't have the authority you need, kindly ask for a supervisor. someone that can escalate this
8:40 am
request. >> what do you say? >> listen, i have this much credit card debt. i'm paying this interest rate. can you help me? what would you do if you were in my views. lending tree found three in four people that just asked, could you lower my rate maybe 20% to 18%. they will not go down to 2% or 0%. >> just something. >> ask and you shall receive. get different people on the phone at different times of the day. but that's exactly what you are going to do. ask. and always tell your story because people understand, you are trying to pay down their debt, right? you are being proactive about it. >> yeah. let me help you, right? >> a woman asked how that could affect social security payments for older americans that might be watching or listening, could these lower rates help them avoid this quicksand. >> it is a great question. we asked the chief financial analyst at bankrate.com. he said the fed cut doesn't directly affect social security payments. that's actually determined by the consumer price index. and your payments are determined each year by the cola, the cost
8:41 am
of living adjustment. when inflation goes down, the price of goods goes down. that's the concept. those two things don't always track perfectly, which is why we should be the conversation about high-yield saving accounts, earn 4.5%, 5%. cds, certificates of deposit, another great way for seniors to get a steady rate of return. you're giving a fixed amount to the bank for a period of time. they will give you much more interest on your money than you would if it was sitting in a plain, traditional savings account. >> you will have to come back and do this again. >> we want to help people get out of that financial quicksand. >> good for you, vicky. just ahead, turning from finance to fashion. from coastal cowgirl, take a look at that and cherry cola red. it's all here. but, first, this is "today" on
8:43 am
the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders.
8:44 am
we're back with "today." the fashion trends you will be seeing everywhere this fall from fashion boots to the season's hottest color. so we got trends we need to be on top of as the fall rolls around. let's talk coastal cowgirl. what is going on there with it? >> i love this because it takes the western style that has a little edge to it. and then you make it softer with a coastal vibe to it. we're talking lighter colors. but we still have the cowboy colors, the fringe. >> check it out! >> this is the cutest thing ever. >> look at katie. i mean, we're talking a lot about these long length denim skirts because it looks so stunning, so much height. add the cowboy boots to it and the fringe on the loose zara sweater definitely pulls it off. the sweater looks great. >> and that bag. >> and the bag. so you really have the soft colors that bring it together. you can wear this anywhere. >> look at this. >> okay. look at this. i am buying this because it is
8:45 am
on sale right now. you have to buy this dress. it is so stunning, so flattering. this is a wrangler combo vest. i love it. you can wear it open. it is a great style. you can wear it with the pants and the dress. if you add the cowboy hat with amazon, it changes everything. >> this is the cutest. >> and this is their style. >> all right. good-bye. enjoy the clothes. >> exactly. >> all right. our next trend is called blokette. >> let's go athleisure with a little structure. get that preppy look with the checkered skirt. that gives you that great vibe to it where you have the looseness. check out the shoes. also with that higher wedge
8:46 am
that's easy to wear. add the texture and comfort and you have the perfect fall outfit right there. >> so cute. come on. i love this outfit right there. >> take this wide leg pant and add that structured jacket to it and it streamlines the look. wear this every day. add playfulness with the shoes. they're so much fun to wear with it. a little purse, which is always fun. your base layer is very structured. a high neckline. >> y'all are so cute. >> aren't they adorable? >> all right, guys. thank you so much. there is a trend based on a soda. >> yes. >> cherry cola. >> cherry cola is our color. it is a deep, really beautiful color. look at phyllis. she is going out tonight.
8:47 am
she is just looking stunning. check out this banana republic dress. it instantly adds sophistication and glamour. pop it with the glasses. check out those boots. just instantly stunning, so comfortable. then you have your purse to finalize the look to give you that full, dramatic style. >> i love the monochromatic look. >> let's talk about erica. i love this look, too. >> h&m top. look at this. it is all about the textures playing off here. so beautiful. love this top with anything. pair it with these flowy pants and it adds instant style to it. check out those shoes. it is a structured wedge. super easy to walk in with an open toe and add jewelry to it. you have the sheen and the polished look, the faux leather and that texture. >> let's bring everybody out. let's bring out julie and katie, dylan and whitney. by the way, every single one of these looks is something you go out in every single day. these are beautiful. >> we're basically like monday through sunday covered here. >> we're all set.
8:48 am
8:50 am
all right. that's exciting music. we have football. we have food. and we are on the plaza for today food loves football. here on nbc and peacock it is sunday night. the kansas city chiefs. will taylor be there in atlanta? probably. atlanta falcons are looking good. so we have some food to go along with it. adam richmond, always great to have you, man, for the big game. when we told you chiefs/atlanta,
8:51 am
what were you thinking for kc? >> one thing i'm doing is making the same chicken tenders for both sliders. we will do it the same way. basically, the breading is a combination. >> you have a whole bunch of stuff going on. wow, love it. >> you can mix it all up if you want to keep it larger. i like to blitz it altogether so it is still big chunks. basically, we will marinade the chicken, let it marinade for an hour overnight. we will add in butter milk. >> yeah, love it. >> that acid will break it down. we have black pepper, onions powder and paprika. then we massage the whole thing around, roll it up. let it marinade for an hour overnight to tenderize it and let the flavors sink in. give it a good shake. perfect. you may want to step back because you have the nice suit on. there you go. this is a good tip for anyone at
8:52 am
home. don't use the same hand when you go from flour to bread crumbs. use right hand to go from flour to egg, and then we're going to use left to go from egg to panko. otherwise, we end up looking like the thing from fantastic four. then we coat it using the magic of tv. super duper crunchy. basically, we will get these coated, do this really fast. they will normally be coated nicely. lay it and coat it with the oil so when it fries it really sizzles up. >> we have our football eaters over there. >> the potato chips there. >> so the whole inspiration for this was a place in kc called stroud's fried chicken. >> full of sweet and sour. >> exactly right. >> so i made a slaw harkening back to barbecue. so we've got dijon. we have celery seed.
8:53 am
we have lots and lots of onion to make it super bright. we pound out the tenders so they rest right on there. and then the actual bun we toast it in a compound butter with a little sage and paprika, everything that goes with chicken. so that is my omage to kc. that's the compound butter right there. >> now take us into atlanta. >> so inspired by the iconic restaurant, the varsity. what do you have? what do you have? i lived in atlanta with the college in atlanta. the varsity is legendary. the pimento cheese sandwich is an icon. we will add in shredded cheddar. we will add in mayo. so we will throw in some mayo and then, of course, the iconic
8:54 am
pimentos. that's actually going to spice it up. pepper and garlic. basically, you want to fold it so it ends up being combined like that. being call it southern caviar. >> hint of salt? >> if you want to. it is like two tastes. so you really want to get these combined. toast a couple waffles. don't let them get too brittle. we will do an homage to chicken and waffles and the great varsity. and this ends up sort of adhering all the flavors together. so get a healthy dollop. and that's going to not only get the chicken to stick to the waffle but fill those nooks and crannies on that waffle. we will put a lot on both sides this football season. you know, my grandma used to say, it is good for your coat. i thought grandma thought i was a husky. running the iditarod.
8:55 am
take the tenders. what's cool is with this recipe, if you have friends that are rooting for each team, you make the tenders once. >> these are massive. >> they are. >> you can cut them. >> and you don't have to bake it off. >> it's already toasted. the things are already cooked. yeah, that's for you. that's the one. >> how is it? how is the chicken and waffle? >> the chicken and waffle and pimento is good. trying to eat it all at once, though, is a dance. >> what do you think of the flavors? >> that's my favorite. it is sweet and savory. >> my homage to a great restaurant. the fan bases love these restaurants. i love fans. i'm a fan of fans. >> you finished right getting ready for sunday. it will be a good game. i think i like an upset maybe. atlanta is playing well. kansas city due for one l. early in the season, this could be the game. i don't know. we'll see. we're ready to go, and we got a good tailgate situation.
