8:35 pm
the major milestone. as nbc bay area's kristy smith shows us, one train was also named after a bay area lawmaker. it was a long time coming, and today the celebration rolled in. caltrain fully launching its new electrified trains. yesterday was my first day riding the electrified train from work in san mateo, back here to san jose, and the conductor is the one who alerted us. the passenger saying that we were able to ride for free all weekend long. so my brother and i made plans to come on up to san francisco today. i've only ridden the diesel once so far, so i'm looking forward to riding the electric one. the new electric trains are zero emission and mean shorter travel times and increased service. in the launch of the new schedule for electrified service. san jose mayor matt mahan sees it this way. this is a really big deal. this means more service, faster service, cleaner and quieter. i mean, this is a huge upgrade to the commuter rail

8:41 pm
here's how she answered that question during an exclusive interview last week with our sister station in san diego. obviously, we're going to start off with this tour. we have 30 cities, 32 shows. let's focus on that. and then i think after this, we deserve a well, good break. so then we'll see. now, simone told us that it's not about winning a gold medal. it's really about finding your gold talent and letting it shine. she is inspiring so many young girls out here today at this performance. and there are more than 10,000 attendees for tonight's show. reporting live in san jose. and i'm about to go practice my backflips. back to you. we can't wait for that. we can wait for that. go ahead. marianne. do the backflip. go ahead. she has to practice. i guess she's got to warm up. you got to stretch first. sorry. my mistake, i apologize. all right. marianne, have fun. we'll check in with you later. coming up, a

pair of south bay sisters. this is a crazy story, folks. getting ready for a major milestone. swimming from alcatraz to san francisco for the 100th time. what inspired them to take the dive and the lessons they've learned in the water? plus, cleaning statewide push to protect our beaches and how people in the bay area pitched in. it looks like our sunday will start off with some clouds, a little bit of patchy, dense fog for places like san francisco, but we're also expecting a warmer finish to the weekend. the details on thos
8:43 pm
8:44 pm
of knowing. swim from alcatraz to san francisco. but get this, they're doing it for the 100th time tomorrow morning. the swim is about a mile and a quarter to
8:45 pm
a mile and a half, depending on the currents. water is frigid, as you know. we checked right now. it's near 60 degrees out there. that is really cold. that does not stop these two sisters and nyjah and natalie concord. they've been open water swimmers as they call it. they've been doing it for years. and nyjah was the youngest person to make alcatraz crossing when she was eight years old. natalie was the youngest person to swim the strait of medina in italy. when she was 15. joining me now, these two, i think you can call them ultra athletes natalie and nyjah concord and sisters, let me just start out by asking, how did you get into this in the first place? this open water swimming, as you call it, it's just it's just wild. tell us what's interesting about it. how did you get into it? yeah i can answer that. we both grew up competitive swimmers, and one of our teammates actually was doing a alcatraz crossing, and she invited us out to see her and
8:46 pm
her brother do this. alcatraz crossing. and we watched. and i immediately decided i could do it, too. she was only a year older than me and not that much faster in the pool. so if she could do it, why couldn't i. and my parents said that if i wanted to do it and, you know, wanted to wear a wetsuit for the swim, i'd have to try it for at least three weeks. and stick with it for three weeks, and then it would be worth it. and i think those three weeks flew by and i really never wanted to go back to competitive swimming. just wanted to do open water. natalie, is it is it true that you didn't like water when you were younger? is this true? yes. very true. i was deathly afraid of water for a really long time. actually, the reason why my mom put me in swimming was because she was afraid of the water too. and she didn't want me to turn out like that either. so she wanted to desensitize me. and then i immediately fell in love with it. and just out of convenience, put my sister in swimming, too. yeah this is this is great. and i as i understand it, you've got a signature jump
8:47 pm
into the water. i think we got some video of you doing the signature jump. how how do you come up with this jump? and how do you master the conditions out there with the currents and the. so cold. tell us about it. so i think once i mean, they always tell you before you jump to hold your goggles and spread your legs so you don't like, go really deep in the water. and once i saw the swimmer and he made a face that my dad when he was jumping off the boat, i must have been around 8 or 9, probably nine, when i saw that. and so i made a decision that i would just always do like a make a face when i look at my dad, when i jump off the boat, you can see that. and i kind of go like this. and i look at my dad because he's the one taking the photo. i think the water, the conditions are always different. it depends on outside weather, wind, waves, the currents, the temperatures i think are kind of like party trick that we tell people is that you can put it in the bay for 30s, and we can tell
8:48 pm
you which way the currents going ebbing or flooding, how many knots it's going and the temperature of the bay. we've gotten really good just by being in it for so long and so many years. we can just kind of tell. and i think one of our favorite things about open water swimming is that every swim is different. and so it keeps us thinking on our feet. what is it about that alcatraz swim? you must. i mean, you've got to love it. you've been. this is going to be the 100th time tomorrow morning. do you do you love it? looking up at the city or what's attractive to it? to you about the swim? i think for me it's just a really peaceful swim. it's only a little over a mile, so it's not like we're in the water for more than an hour at a time. the skyline is breathtaking. the bridge is breathtaking, and i just feel like nobody really gets that view other than us. so it's kind of our little, intimate moment with the bay and
8:49 pm
the city that we love so much. who's the fastest swimmer between the two of you? who's got the fastest time doing that? alcatraz crossing? oh, it's definitely her. she. she's the little speed queen here, she she's super fast. i'm normally a little bit further back, but almost at her toes. what is a swim that you're yet to do that you're looking forward to doing at some point? anything come to mind? the two of you going somewhere and doing some wild swim. i haven't really thought about a swim that i really, really want to do, but, i think that the most attractive swim, probably to me right now is the farallons. so the golden gate bridge, it's a it's a long swim. i think it's around about like 30 miles. yeah. and we both actually love sharks a lot. yeah we love sharks, we're not scared of them. shouldn't you be a little afraid of them? no, i mean, okay, i think i think it's
8:50 pm
good to understand that you're in their territory. exactly. and so they're only going to attack you if you provoke them. things like hypothermia are much bigger risks that you're taking in the water. i would say that sharks are just, like, not on our minds. well you're not afraid of currents. you're not afraid of deep water. you're not afraid of sharks. ladies and gentlemen, the concord sisters. they'll be out there swimming from alcatraz to san francisco tomorrow morning for the 100th time. best of luck, girls. thank you. wow. lofty goals there, my heroes. no fear. yep. all right. yep thanks for that, terry. okay, san francisco's ocean beach is a little bit cleaner tonight. thanks to dozens of volunteers. caltrans partnered with a local organization called refuse refuse for a cleanup event. it's also california coastal cleanup day, a statewide campaign to keep beaches clean. and along with this one, cleanups took place at several beaches throughout the state. today, we got about 200 people who showed up who are spreading out along
8:51 pm
the coast to clean up all the litter and plastic pollution and other toxins that are out there and just picking it up piece by piece. today was the 40th annual california coastal cleanup day, and volunteers who participated got free grub. they were entered into a raffle to win a visa gift card. all right. rob mayeda joining us now. and foggy on the coast today, i saw some fog there and but so many places it was heading towards summer again. yeah. you know, we're just hours away from the start of fall, actually. 543 tomorrow morning. but a summerlike forecast to wrap up the weekend and the return of some hot temperatures once again as we get towards monday and tuesday, as we take you outside right now, pretty comfortable in san jose, 67 degrees. we'll see some patchy low clouds spilling into the santa clara valley for the morning. and still near 70 in walnut creek tomorrow. inland contra costa county from walnut creek to concord. likely returning to the low 90s. and as you head into san rafael right now, 62 degrees, some low clouds
8:52 pm
there to the south, and a foggy view with some misty skies around san francisco as high pressure builds in, we sometimes see this before the hot weather arrives. the low clouds tend to get squished down closer to ground level, so watch out for that patchy, dense fog tomorrow morning. 50s and 60s around the inner bay as the sea breeze. for now, that ocean air conditioning will bring in the low clouds for tomorrow morning. again. some areas of patchy, dense fog around the inner bay and the coast likely what will be different about sunday as we should break out the sunshine a little bit earlier across our inland valleys, and that will lead to a warmer finish to the weekend morning temperatures mostly in the 50s. cloudy start sunny finish and you'll notice here the warm up for places south of san jose. we're talking near 90 degrees as you get into morgan hill and gilroy east san jose near 91 degrees out by alum rock areas east of 680 tomorrow, where you've got that closure from al costa down to the five 8680 interchange. again tomorrow, it's going to be warm. your air conditioner is going to be running. you got some low 90s
8:53 pm
east of 680 out towards the tri valley upper seconds into oakland peninsula. temperatures in the mid 70s around san mateo, downtown san francisco tomorrow close to the low 70s 60s coast side and for the north bay, wrapping up the weekend with 80s to low 90s. now sunday is the warmup to the heat. look at that 80s and 90s around the central bay. keep in mind, technically it's fall, but the weather doesn't care about that. for monday, you got 90s to about 100 degrees in the hottest places around the tri valley down towards morgan hill. monday and tuesday, the hottest days of the week. and then by wednesday, putting a pretty big drop off there as the onshore wind picks up. so the ocean air conditioning cranks up. no rain, but the system is passing by to the north will bring up that sea breeze, weaken high pressure just enough for that midweek cool down. but for now, as you saw, those storms going off to the north, looks like as we move forward through the end of the month, best rain chances likely stay to our north as well, so we warm up a little bit for sunday, but the big days for warmer
8:54 pm
weather will be monday and tuesday. even downtown san francisco, as you saw, likely looking at some 80s monday and tuesday in the valleys, we'll jump about 20 to 25 degrees hotter between what we had today and monday and tuesday. then some cooling as we head through the second half of the week. so two days of hot temperatures, then second half of the week feeling a bit more like fall. kind of like a curtain call for summer. it is a couple more bonus days. all right rob, thanks. well, up next, the east bay celebrates a southeast asian refugee group. we take you to the event, giving the comm

i'm terry mcsweeney. unfortunately, car break ins are not unusual in san francisco. oftentimes, they are caught on camera, but there is something unusual about an incident in san francisco's richmond district this morning. the thieves threw some bizarre items at the person who filmed them. okay. the neighbor who took this video says the masked individuals were breaking into that truck. saw him recording. then they threw a carton of what appears to be heavy cream at him. this happened around 7:00 this morning on 15th and clement. the owner of the truck tells us the

9:06 pm
a new york times essay. he is an undocumented immigrant. against the advice of a lawyer, she said, jose, you cannot say that you broke the law. and i remember telling her, well, well, if i don't say i broke the law, then what am i doing? and so are all the farmers making sure that you have your strawberries and hamburgers. so all the construction workers building your buildings. so all those nannies taking care of your kids. so who's breaking the law? exactly. why is it that when we talk about breaking the law, we only talk about the people who are breaking the law? and we're not talking about the employers who are actually part of the breaking of the law. when it comes to this issue, we have not told the full truth. and the american public are absolutely a part of that. born in the philippines, vargas came to the u.s. at the age of 12 to live with his grandparents. and so my mom put me on a plane. she said. the last thing she said that, you know, it might be cold there. she didn't come with your mom. my mom did not come with me. she introduced me to a man whom she said was my uncle. i

landed in mountain view august 3rd, 1993. and did you understand that you were then supposed to live in america from here on out? no, i did not. i did not. but probably the biggest adjustment was really just culture, right? at 16, vargas tried to get a driver's permit. i showed her my green card, and i showed her my school id from mountain view high school. and the woman just flipped the card around, and she said, this is fake. when he confronted his grandfather. and then that's when my grandfather, my lolo, said, what are you doing? showing that to people. the green card. and then he sai, you're not supposed to be here. so that's how i found out. like so many undocumented immigrants, he hid his identity and relied on an ecosystem of good samaritans. as he navigated higher education and work as a

journalist for vargas. one was his washington post colleague, peter pearl. i disclosed everything i said that the green card is fake. my social security number is not to be supposed to be used for employment. i don't know why e-verify didn't catch my papers. i'm here illegally. what do i do? and on that bench, he made a decision to protect me. then he began sharing his truth publicly. i'm a colombian from nigeria, from brazil. i'm an undocumented immigrant from germany. vargas ended up on the cover of time magazine with dozens of other undocumented immigrants. his documentary about his journey aired on cnn. he is now one of the leading voices on immigrant rights. i am a human being that is the most important thing. so i'm launching a whole campaign about what it means to be an american and the fact that i am an american. so now you're on a mission to define american. this is probably going to be the work of my life. the anti-immigrant narrative in this country has been so cemented and has been so racialized for decades now. that narrative of illegal alien as

people of latin descent has been so cemented in our psyche. even though asian americans are actually the fastest immigrant group in this country, documented and undocumented, right? there are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the u.s, according to the pew research center. california is home to what? 2 million undocumented people. vargas tells us undocumented californians like himself survive and live in an underground economy where they can buy a car, own or rent a home, and pay taxes. he flies domestically, but has not left the country since he arrived in the u.s. because there's no guarantee he'll be allowed back in. i hope that we think of our limitations as our way of challenging ourselves and thinking outside of whatever box this country has put us in. are you still working on a path to citizenship, or what does that look like? that's a question i get asked all the time, right? like why haven't you fixed this thing? i don't know if you looked at the immigration code.

it's more complicated than the tax code. it's not a one size fits all system. i broke the laws and i admitted to breaking those laws. and that that kind of truth telling has been costl. but if we're not telling the truth, what are we doing? coming up, cnn invites vice president kamala harris and former president trump to debate the response from both candidates tonitgh

the presidential candidates have debated just once, and there are questions about whether or not a second debate will happen. vice president harris campaign said today it would accept an invitation for a second debate on cnn. the proposed date october 23rd. former president trump says shortly after his

first debate with harris that there would be no third debate. he debated president biden in july, an event that eventually led to harris's nomination by the democratic party. because mr. biden did so poorly. mr. trump told supporters today the debate on abc was unfair that it is too close to the election to spar again. abc was three on one, but i was given credit for having done a very, very good job. i appreciate that we did a great job. it was three on one. the problem with another debate is that it's too just late. voting has already started. she's had her chance to do it with fox. harris campaign says it would be unprecedented in modern history for there to be only one general election debate between the leading candidates. well, when you cast your ballot in november, you won't just be voting for president. there's a number of local measures on the ballot as well. for a full voter guide, just scan the qr code on your screen right now. it will

grand opening today, inviting its first customers. the business has taken over the space previously occupied by fourth street pizza across from city hall. now, a number of businesses in downtown san jose have struggled to find success in the area. but the owners are optimistic their traditional mexican paletas with a twist will be a hit. look at them giving out samples right there. they've already got a fan base. as you can see from this line, from their days serving ice cream from a food truck. popsicles in the ice cream are out of this world. great ingredients, very flavorful. variety of just different kinds of ice cream and popsicles. so i love them. and i'm here to support. well, the nonprofit prosperity lab gave the owners of archuleta panetta training

and mentoring. you like saying that, don't you? yeah. it's a good tongue twister. it keeps your tongue, you know, active. yes. all right. it helped the owners transition from street vendor to a brick and mortar store. a very chilly day in sausalito today. i'm not talking about the weather. talking about the 45th annual chili cook off. several hundred people turned out at dunphy park. this year's theme out of this world. some booths featured creatures from out of this world. folks i spoke to told me the chili was out of this world, and a few of the chefs were kind enough to share some of their secret ingredients with me. what's the secret to your chili? great. love. a lot of passion, great. chilies and a little potato. because baked potato and chili. why not? and what we have here is a beef and pork chili with some warm spices like cinnamon and brown sugar. and then we balance it out with sour cream, cilantro and some crispy jalapeno tips on top with

the san francisco high school students. and it's our first chili cook off. just excitement. those those high school girls. at the end there were the chili chicks and they won second place in the judges award. their first ever attempt at chili. wow. pirates of the caribbean also honored the cook-off also had a hot pepper eating contest. the event raises money for the parks and rec department. music there that we heard there. right there by karakorum. this comes at a perfect time, doesn't it, chili? yeah, right on the eve of fall. fall. getting started tomorrow. and it was a little cold this morning. we had the low clouds and misty skies, but bonus, summer is about to come. bonus summer. you're going to see it showing up in the 7-day forecast. and a bit of a warmer finish to the weekend as well. let's show you some of the headlines as we wrap up the weekend. a little warmer tomorrow, even though we have officially moved into fall as of 543 tomorrow morning. and speaking of those warmer temperatures, it's a pretty big jump by the time we get to
9:20 pm
monday valleys in the 90s and possibly seeing some hundreds right now, 64 degrees in san jose, we'll see some low clouds on the way for tomorrow morning, 69 in walnut creek and sfo, you see the low clouds and fog there. we'll have those onshore winds bringing the clouds and with high pressure strengthening above, chances are we may have some patchy dense fog for tomorrow morning, but we should break out the sunshine a bit earlier across those inland valleys. one of the reasons why tomorrow's temperatures will be trending warmer than the highs we had today. so a little bit of a cloudy start with some patchy dense fog and a few spots. then as we move forward into the afternoon, 87 in san jose, 92 for morgan hill and more low 90s we think out towards the tri valley, up towards the altamont pass and concord and vallejo 90, but for now still 70s and 80s bayside from oakland into hayward, about 85 degrees in redwood city, low 70s closer to downtown san francisco for your sunday as the patchy fog breaks up a bit for the afternoon and north bay. highs tomorrow. upper

80s to low 90s. now look what happened. it's like spicy chili there on the monday forecast. look at that. you got upper 90s to above 100 degrees out towards solano county. upper 90s south of downtown san jose, even bayside temperatures now in the 80s and 90s. so monday and tuesday, the hottest days of the week. and then the numbers should come down quite a bit by wednesday as the onshore winds pick up wednesday's temperatures kind of like the weather we had today with that fairly strong sea breeze that will be brought up by a weather system that's going to pass us to the north, but weaken high pressure that's going to lead to temperatures coming down a bit as we get into wednesday and thursday. then as we head towards next weekend, temperatures climbing up a little bit after this last burst of summer like temperatures. look at downtown san francisco. we could be looking at some 80s monday and tuesday before things begin to cool down. and valleys that have been in the 70s and 80s going on that temperature roller coaster ride that is typical of fall seven-day forecast goes all over the place. sometimes you got the heat monday and tuesday, and

then we start to cool down as we head towards thursday and friday. first weekend of fall right now looks pretty pleasant, a little breezy at times heading into next saturday. you're really you know, you got the 50s at night, 60s and 70s, 80s and 90s. all the weather covered. all right. rob, thanks. okay. anthony flores here. it feels like one right after another. if you're a 49ers fan, you're thinking, well, who's going to play? that's right. everybody's hurt. right? yeah. somebody's got to show up. the 49ers will be without another one of their offensive weapons tomorrow against the rams. the injury that will keep tight end george kittle out of sunday's game. stick around. sports is next.

trifecta. first it was cmc, then deebo, and now george kittle is feeling the sting of the injury
9:25 pm
bug. the 49ers all-pro tight end will not play tomorrow against the rams. he was downgraded to out because of a hamstring injury. deebo was ruled out earlier this week. he'll miss a couple of games after straining his calf. christian mccaffrey is on injured reserve. he's dealing with a calf strain and achilles tendinitis. so what does that mean for quarterback brock purdy. are the niners going to ask him to do more to beat the rams? this is a rams team that is also dealing with a ton of injuries. you know we never asked brock to really do too much. we asked him to do the play that's called if nothing's there. what are your options after that. things you always try to do is not turn it over. but nothing really changes when you're missing guys. it's game plan can sometimes change, but not what you ask. the quarterback to do. you know it sucks not having your guys, but man, we got playmakers. like i've said that before, we got a really good scheme. great play caller and some great players that, you know, step up in the roles and do their job really well. so for me man, it's i still have to do my job in terms of my reads and my progressions.
9:26 pm
you know, obviously i'd love to have my guys back and playing with them. but you know, that's just how it is with with this game. sometimes college football cal playing its first ever acc game at florida state down five with under a minute to go in the fourth, the golden bears on fourth and a mile. oh. fernando mendoza is sacked. and that is your ball game. the seminoles had norcal its first loss of the season final 14 to 9 lamont wade, who homered his first time deep down the right field line and he does it again. lamonte wade jr with his second home run of the game. but wait there's more. next batter matt chapman goes yard. he just returned from maternity leave after his wife gave birth to their first child. her name is gia. chapman hits the daily double in the sixth. that would be his second home run. the giants hit five homers in the game. they blanked the royals. nine. nothing. how about matt chapman showing off his dad's strength? i've seen guys hit a lot of homers when the

first day they're back from having a baby, so i'm glad i got to join that club. i felt like more tired to be honest with you, i felt like, the last couple of days were just such a, like, a whirlwind. after a couple innings and my first at bat, i was able to kind of settle in a little bit and get back in the swing of things. and obviously hitting the home run gives you a little bit of relief. they're back here at home final saturday night for the a's at the coliseum, oakland, taking on linden native aaron judge and the new york yankees up six. nothing in the seventh. judge pounds the gavel. it's his league leading 54th home run of the season. the yankees hammer the a's ten. nothing. the a's have just four home games remaining at the coliseum. that final game is next thursday. that's a look at sports. terry and gia, back to you. all right, anthony, thank you very much. i'm glad matt chapman named his girl after you. gia. gia and luke, oakland firefighters make an unusual rescue. would you look at this?

they responded to a call about a deer wedged between a house and a garage. oh, dear. you can see the animal stuck on its back in a very tight space. firefighters managed to tie a rope around the animal's legs, lift the deer up, put her back on her feet. eventually, they pulled the animal out of the opening safely. animal control officers released her back into the wild. nice job. finally tonight, a very successful partnership between a celebrity chef and the san jose public library foundation. i thought you were supposed to. you weren't supposed to eat in the library, right? no, but you can this time. okay. bay area chef martin yan helped raise $95,000 for library programs today. entry to 250 guests to a five course meal, and held a cooking demonstration at a sold out fundraiser at city hall. and our very own robert honda was the emcee of this event. the money raised today will support literacy, provide career development, and expand access to digital tools. he is still doing his thing. he's so good and he's everywhere. really he is. and robert honda makes us proud and gets free food. it works out for everyone. thanks
