7:00 am
wow. if you can just take a peek at your screen. a gorgeous look above the clouds over san francisco on this first day of fall. doesn't that look
7:01 am
promising as we start a new season? thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a look at our microclimate forecast. you're wearing one of the colors that we just saw. kind of look at that camera all day long. i just wanted to stay like that. so gorgeous. yeah. welcome to the new season, kira. and everyone. it is the autumnal equinox, which translates to an equal day and an equal night, as we kind of counterbalance that 23.5 degree earth tilt to a slightly more equal one, where the sun's rays will hit directly on the equator. here, you might have already started to notice some earlier sunsets, but those leaves are yet to change, and we will be changing in the next couple of days. not really feeling like fall for the first couple of days of it. as we trend more towards summer like temperatures, a little warmer today. definitely feeling that heat by tomorrow and tuesday as we kick start our new workweek here in fall valley's going into the 90s and some possible triple
7:02 am
digit temperatures, we'll talk about how long that heat will stick around and what's ahead for the next couple of days as we round out september here, kira back to you. all right. cynthia, thanks. breaking news. overnight, four people were killed in a shooting in a busy entertainment district in birmingham, alabama. at least 18 people have been injured. law enforcement is searching for, quote, several shooters. this morning, the fbi and the atf, the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives are working with local police. this is the second mass shooting in birmingham, alabama this year. back here locally. and now to a story we first brought to you as breaking news yesterday morning. a vta bus driver shot and killed late friday night. it happened at the shibuya bus yard on south seventh street in san jose. valley transportation authority workers are stunned and on edge as the vta promises to ensure worker safety. the police are
7:03 am
still searching for that shooter. today, in the bay's natalie vera reports. well, we're just all in. still in shock a bit. employees at valley transportation authority are grappling with the sudden and violent death of one of their colleagues. just before 10 p.m. friday, police and emergency crews responded to a shooting at the shibuya division yard on south seventh street. we do have an operator that has been confirmed as a fatality in our shibuya parking lot. when officers got there, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. i had the pleasure of working with him for the last, probably about 7 or 8 years since he was at this division. and, you know, we've lost a good person. it was a very good, good individual. earlier this afternoon, we saw a group of employees come by here in the parking lot where the shooting happened. as you can see, they set up a memorial remembering their colleague
7:04 am
bringing flowers, candles and balloons. meanwhile, the union president says they continue waiting for answers. so it's just a lot of, you know, confusion and chaos, right now. the santa clara county sheriff's office has not identified a suspect, and the motive remains unclear. but investigators say this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. though the agency says it is still taking precautions. we have increased security presence for in not just at this facility, but at all our facilities. it's the second deadly shooting in three years, rocking the vta community in 2021. an employee shot and killed nine coworkers before taking his own life. with this incident, it's triggering to some of some of our folks. we really thought we were, you kno, getting past some of the stuff from before and obviously this is going to spur a lot of that back. we want to make sure that
7:05 am
our employees understand that this is a different incident than what had happened a while back. we are here to support them. this is a different environment. vta leaders say they're offering mental health support, adding they've built a strong program with the union since 2021. in san jose. natalie vera, nbc bay area news. in the north bay, santa rosa police have arrested a man for setting multiple fires near an elementary school. the man is suspected of setting four fires this past week in santa rosa's southwest community park, which borders meadowview elementary school. the last fire crossed onto school property during school hours on friday, forcing a shelter in place by that time. firefighters were on high alert. they had spotted a man who they called suspicious leaving the area. detectives tracked that 61 year old santa rosa resident to a nearby hotel where he was arrested. this arrest came one day after a cal fire engineer
7:06 am
was arrested for starting fires in sonoma county while he was off duty. happening now. police in antioch are searching for a person of interest suspected of killing another person. it happened in broad daylight just after noon on friday. our sky ranger flew over the scene. investigators say someone in a truck opened fire on a person near carvalho road and sunset drive. paramedics rushed that victim to the hospital where they died. now, detectives are asking for help in finding the suspect's truck. this is a photo of it. pretty recognizable. it's an old blue gmc sierra pickup truck with black rims. a lot of paint missing as well. anyone with information is asked to call antioch police. car. break-ins are not uncommon in san francisco. oftentimes, they are caught on camera surveillance cameras on buildings. but there was something unusual about a recent incident in san francisco's richmond district. the thieves
7:07 am
were caught on camera and through some bizarre items at the person who was filming them. this break-in took place around seven in the morning yesterday on 15th and clement. the neighbor who took this video tells nbc bay area the masked individuals were breaking into his neighbor's truck. they saw him recording and then they threw cartons of heavy cream at him. the owner of the truck tells us the thieves got away with about $500 in tools. he filed a police report. the person who took the video is trying to encourage others who are victims of break-ins, to do the same. resources go where the crimes happen. and if we stop reporting the crimes, it's going to look to the to the police on paper as if the crimes aren't happening. another neighbor says a van was broken into yesterday
7:08 am
morning as well, just a few blocks away. they were also rattled to hear about recent business break ins and like this one on tuesday, where thieves rammed a car into a convenience store on balboa street to steal lottery tickets. happening today, the san francisco school board is holding a rare sunday meeting. it's an emergency closed door session to deal with what's being called a personnel matter. this meeting comes amid growing calls for superintendent matt wayne to step down. this week. the former school board president, who resigned in august, blamed wayne for deep dysfunction in the district. at the same time, students, parents and staff are waiting to hear if their school is slated for closure next year. a list of schools set to close was due to be released last week, but that has been pushed to october and again this morning. a portion of 680 remains closed in the east
7:09 am
for bay repaving. caltrans shared this video of the road work being done yesterday afternoon. it's all part of that ongoing repaving project. caltrans says the closure will help crews condense 40 nights of work into just one weekend. again, the closure is on southbound 680 between acosta boulevard and the five 8680 interchange. crews expect to open things back up by 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. it's just shy of nine past the hour. we have much more ahead for you on today in the bay, including taking you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who has a preview of this week's meet the press. plus, we continue celebrating hispanic heritage month here at nbc bay area. ahead, we show you how leaders in one south bay community are helping celebrate the mexican heritage plaza ringing in its silver anniversary. much more news ahead. you're watching today in the bay

of certifying the vote. at the same time, some trump allies in nebraska are pushing for that state to change its allocation of electoral college votes in a way that would favor the gop. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi kristen. happy first day of fall to you. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm wondering to what extent are allies of former president trump trying to change the elections infrastructure in this home stretch to election day? well, i had a chance to interview kira and happy first day of fall to you two. i had a chance to interview senator lindsey graham and he was in nebraska this past week making the case that it should go to a
7:13 am
winner take all state instead of a state where the electoral votes are doled out in terms of district, which by the way, helped joe biden win back in 2020. and he thinks there's a 5050 chance that that could actually happen. i asked him if this is a sign that trump can't win nebraska without changing the rules. if he's on defense and look, he argued, it's time for that state to change the way it does business. but the reality is there is a lot of concern about the implications of changing the rules. last minute you talked about georgia as well. the concerns about the fact that could this not create confusion and chaos and the air, that there is something untoward happening so i do think there's going to be an ongoing, robust and probably quite frankly, legal debate, particularly when you're talking about the state of georgia, not to mention the domino effect going back to nebraska, if one state were to change the electoral process, wouldn't the rest of the 49 want to follow suit? a lot to unpack
7:14 am
there, kristen. we look forward to your exclusive interviews this morning. we'll see you in about 45 minutes from now. thanks so much for that preview. we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press. she will have exclusive interviews with pennsylvania democratic senator john fetterman and south carolina republican senator lindsey graham. if you just stick right here with us for today in the bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m, right after this newscast and coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we will talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a closer look at what we should and should not expect when reviewing political presidential polls. well, as we continue to honor hispanic heritage month here at nbc bay area, we are proud to highlight the people and places that make the bay area so unique. this morning that includes celebrating the gateway to east san jose. we're talking about mexican heritage plaza, which this week turned 25
7:15 am
years old. new leadership is taking the plaza to the next level, and our today in the bay damian trujillo was there for the ribbon cutting. 25 years ago and today he was back to talk with some of the original founders. it sits on six acres in east san jose on the same property where cesar chavez held his first grape boycott. outside the old safeway, the mexican heritage plaza is now home to a slew of community programs, including free or low cost music and art classes for children is actually, a dream come true. no question about it. a dream come true. there's no no way to describe the pride that we all feel for what we ultimately achieved. pete carrillo and fernando zazueta were part of a team that included former vice mayor blanca alvarado, who founded the plaza 25 years ago, an idea that's now become a beacon in east san jose. it
7:16 am
exceeds anything that we had planned and i, for one, think it's a good idea to expand the footprint of the mexican heritage plaza. well i am so proud of this facility, and even more proud that my daughter got married here. the plaza still hosts weddings and concerts and fundraisers. we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. the new leadership is taking the business plan to the next level. as a school of arts and culture. they purchased the building across the street on alum rock avenue, which will house a new health center, a community cafe, and a black box theater, all in the heart of the mayfair community. we also recognize that mayfair is in advanced stages of gentrification and if we are not actively informing the built environment, we are actually a part of the problem. 25 years later, the mexican heritage

plaza is still its same majestic self, a place the mayfair community can call its own. the pride of san jose's mexican heritage damian trujillo nbc bay area news. for more stories just like this one, be sure to go to our website or scan that qr code on your screen. it will take you straight to our nbc bay area app, which is free to download and available for all smartphone devices. well, as we reported yesterday morning, for the first time ever, every caltrain running is now electric. this has been a long time coming. the $2.4 billion project broke ground back in 2017. the new electric trains are zero emissions and also mean shorter travel times and increased services. the interior of the trains got a big upgrade. there are power outlets, free wi-fi, more storage and restrooms in every single car. caltrain even
7:18 am
named a new electric train in honor of congresswoman anna eshoo. the congresswoman is nearing the end of her final term after serving 30 years in congress. she's been a longtime advocate for public transit and helped ensure caltrain received a federal funding for the electrification project. we are a region that is known throughout the nation as being the most innovative, the most creative. we're the innovation capital of our country, and i think of the world. this new system, this new system reflects that reputation. it upholds that reputation. congresswoman eshoo spoke at a community celebration yesterday in palo alto. there is another community celebration today at the san mateo caltrain station from 2 to 6 p.m. it's on
7:19 am
first avenue in san mateo. so how will the weather be as we go to check out those new electric trains? cinthia pimentel is here for a look at our microclimate forecast on this first day of fall. look at that beautiful sunrise behind us. and then we woke up to that sutro tower shot with the clouds. it's just gorgeous. and we saw there with the caltrain video. lots of sunshine. that's what we can expect for the day today too. so excited that people are going to check it out. it is really neat. upper 50s to start our day down here in san jose with that sunshine starting to peek through. it's a bit foggy through parts of oakland, pleasanton and towards san rafael where it's a bit cooler up there in the north bay. some mid 50s. some cool 40s though, as we went further up and checked on the maps in calistoga. but after we mix out of this morning fog and we get into some warmer temperatures for our first day of fall, we're looking at a high of about 85. in san jose, 88 in los gatos and 90 degrees in gilroy. we get a
7:20 am
few more microclimates, though, as we start to make our way into the east bay. upper 70s there for oakland, 89, in walnut creek and our warmest spots looks to be out in antioch with 94. 92 in livermore. as we take it on to the peninsula, it should be a stunning day. after we get some of that cloud cover out of here. upper 60s for daly city to 80 in palo alto for today. as you take the loop there towards the caltrain. maybe you're heading to the city. that will be your final destination there. we'll see temperatures in the low seconds downtown. just an absolutely gorgeous start to our new season. and if you're taking that up to wine country, well, cheers to you. we're going to see temperatures 89 in napa. of course a little bit warmer as you go up towards the napa valley. and some 90s. we'll get it out towards the coast a little bit, start to make our way along. 101. 88 in santa rosa to 72 in point reyes. but compare this with the temperatures for tomorrow. fall is definitely starting on a hot note if you're from the bay area, you know that it takes a couple of weeks into the fall
7:21 am
season to really get that crisp air going. it will feel like summer as we get our workweek started here. mid to upper 90s for the north bay, the south bay, and even out towards concord. we could be looking at those temperatures, flirting with those 100 degrees. even the inner bay. look at that. and low 80s in san francisco to 91 in hayward. and that really increases here. our risk for fire dangers impacts on our health as well. maybe those after school programs and the sports might need to bring those inside. and this will continue on even into tuesday as well as we look still with some 90s upper 90s in our valleys. it will be slightly cooler for the inner bay, some 70 to 80s with more of that relief starting to arrive as we go on into the middle of the week. now, while we're watching this closely really has to do with our drought monitor. more of those areas here, including in the bay, have shifted towards those abnormally dry conditions. some parts of the desert down into parts of nevada and into arizona
7:22 am
are shifting into that moderate category. so we really need the rainfall. we need more moisture to come in and that's really trending towards the north right now where it could bring some showers right towards the corner there. and our border with oregon, not really bringing any to the bay area. what it will bring though, is a little bit of a cooling relief as we go towards the middle part of the week, so watch that 7-day forecast. hot to start our workweek there. please stay hydrated and spread the word that fall is kicking off with some hot temperatures. we notice though, that we'll drop those temperatures about ten degrees as we go on into wednesday and thursday. a little fake fall feeling there for you, but still trending warmer into next weekend too. san francisco will see a high of about 71 downtown for today, and we'll continue with those warm temperatures for our bay and along the coastline as we go on into monday and tuesday. prepare for some more neighbors there as people find that relief. breezy and cooler, though, as we trend towards the middle part of the week. all right, cynthia, thanks so much. it is 22 past the hour. there is
7:23 am
much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, another blow for the 49ers christian mccaffrey, deebo samuel and now george kittle will not be playing today in l.a. what brock purdy is saying the team will have to do against the rams. you're watching todayn the bay i
7:24 am
7:25 am
power on the sidelines than on the field when they take on the rams today. george kittle will not be available for this game. the all-pro tight end was officially ruled out saturday because of a hamstring injury. now deebo samuel. you might remember, was ruled out earlier this week. he'll miss at least a couple of games after straining his calf. running back christian mccaffrey is on injured reserve. he's dealing with a calf strain and achilles tendinitis. not having these offensive weapons makes quarterback brock purdy's job just a little bit tougher. you know, it sucks not having your guys. how can we figure out
7:26 am
to get the ball to other guys and stuff? but man we got playmakers. like i've said that before, we got a really good scheme, great play caller and some great players that, you know, step up in the in the roles and do their job. really well. you know obviously i'd love to have my guys back and playing with them. but you know that's just how it is with with this game sometimes college football. cal playing its very first acc game at florida state. down five with under a minute to go in the fourth, the golden bears on fourth and a mile. quarterback fernando mendoza is sacked in the seminoles and calarts first loss of the season, 14 nine. the giants putting on a power show in kansas city. lamonte wade jr hit a pair of home runs. so did matt chapman. he just returned from maternity leave after his wife gave birth to their first child. her name is jia. the giants slammed five home runs in the game. they blanked the royals. nine. nothing. how about matt chapman showing off his dad's strength? i've seen guys hit a lot of homers. when the first
7:27 am
day they're back from having a baby. so i'm glad i got to join that club. i felt like more tired, to be honest with you. after a couple innings in my first at bat, i was able to kind of settle in a little bit and get back in the swing of things and obviously hitting the homer gives you a little bit of relief. there back here at home final saturday night for the a's at the coliseum. oakland taking on linden native aaron judge in the new york yankees. he had a lot of fans. they're up six. nothing in the seventh. judge hits his league leading 54th home run of the season. the yankees win it ten. nothing. the a's have just four home games remaining at the coliseum. on the pitch, the quakes down two zero to saint louis city late in the first half. check out the nice pass. jeremy ebobisse scores his fifth goal of the season. that cut the lead in half, but the quakes could not close the gap. saint louis city wins it 2 to 1. that's a look at your morning sports i'm anthony flores for today in the bay anthony thanks. we have much
7:28 am
more ahead on today in the bay. coming up we'll have another look at your forecast. cynthia has a look at what your new workweek will look like. also, another tragic event claiming the life of a south bay bus driver and the shooter still on the run. the steps vta is taking to make emploes feel safe.ye

the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws.
7:30 am
mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. as the sun rises over san jose on this first day of autumn. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper tried to dress in theme today, although i'll be sweating in just a little bit. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. sounds like a turtleneck and long sleeves. isn't really the right thing to wear. you know what? i think we're good for the morning hours, so we get a pass. kira.
7:31 am
good morning. good morning everyone. look at that. you also need a sweater up there in the north bay. sweater weather in santa rosa, 52 degrees. we see that cloud cover hovering over 101. so just be careful if you're heading out the roads, especially through parts of the golden gate bridge into san francisco. just socked in with that fog. you might even use the windshield wipers to wipe off some drizzle. but more sunshine, more of those microclimates as we go on into our valleys. livermore, good morning to you. and down here in san jose. yes, we're putting the sun in sunday as we welcome fall with a warming trend. we will be a little bit warmer tomorrow. definitely feeling some summer heat as we go on into monday and tuesday. we'll trend a little bit cooler though. the good news there as we go towards midweek, i'll be back with the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. keir, back to you. all right cynthia, thanks. this morning vta workers are in mourning, remaining shocked after the loss of one of their colleagues. a bus driver shot and killed late friday night. and today, police are still searching for that gunman. police say they responded around
7:32 am
10:00 friday night at the valley transportation authority shibuya division yard. that's on south seventh street in san jose, just a few blocks away from the santa clara county fairgrounds. the employee had already succumbed to his wounds. while that shooter remains on the loose, police say there is no danger to the public. vta workers we spoke with say the shooting has rattled their close knit group text messages going back and forth. there was individuals that, you know, were getting off at the time of the incident, so everybody just kind of looking for answers at this point. a memorial is growing at the site of the shooting. you can see people stopping by lighting candles, leaving flowers and balloons. the vta says it will increase security along all vta routes this weekend. the agency is also ensuring their employees have resources to deal with yet another tragedy. well, we have to remember about incidents like today is that it's not what
7:33 am
happens today. it's what happens today and then in the weeks to come. so we want to make sure that we're really wrapping our arms around all of our employees. you might recall this comes more than three years after another mass shooting at a separate vta facility. in may of 2021, a vta employee shot and killed nine vta employees at a rail yard in downtown san jose before killing himself. san jose city leaders designated may 26th as a day of remembrance for those victims. we will continue to follow this story both on air and online. make sure you stay up to date with the latest information by downloading our free nbc bay area app. turning now to a south bay wine distributor. fed up after a thief stole thousands of dollars worth of wine from his small shop. again, the owner of joseph george wine shop tells us the burglary happened around 230 yesterday morning. he says.
7:34 am
surveillance video shows the thief with a security guard patch on his shirt. the owner tells us that the thief broke in through the back door and made off with more than $6,000 worth of wine, and it's not the first time this has happened again. we've robbed again, again and again, and we're just cleaning up and it it's ridiculous. burglarized. not only is it just seemed like all a waste, but what it does to you personally, i mean, it really hurts. last december, thieves broke in and stole rare wine. the company has been in that san jose location since 1997, and has been in business for 84 years. we're going to take you back to that car break-in in san francisco. there was something unusual about this one. it happened in the richmond district yesterday morning, and our today in the bay, alyssa goard, spoke with the man who got it all on camer. san francisco resident mark
7:35 am
dietrich said he turned onto 15th and clement saturday morning and saw thieves breaking into his neighbor's truck. and i took a video of them pulling things, rummaging through this car, and they saw me and i think that that's actually they knew i was videotaping them and that stopped them. so they stopped what they were doing before the thieves sped off. they threw a drink at dietrich, followed by two cartons of brazilian heavy cream. the neighbor who owns the truck says they stole about $500 worth of his work tools. a few blocks away, another neighbor also had her van broken into that morning, left inside was another carton of the same brazilian heavy cream. it might be the clue that actually catches these criminals because they're, you know, these small groups of criminals are hitting over and over and over again. other people who live in this neighborhood tell us that they're also concerned about
7:36 am
recent crime at nearby businesses. earlier this week, just a mile away, thieves rammed a car into a convenience store on balboa street to steal lottery tickets. and over the summer, a cigarette shop on 17th and geary was the victim of a similar break-in. the owner of the truck in saturday's break-in did file a police report, but dietrich says many neighbors feel discouraged about calling the police. he's urging them to do so, so that crimes like this get documented. resources go where the crimes happen, and if we stop reporting the crimes, it's going to look to the to the police on paper, as if the crimes aren't happening in san francisco. alyssa goard nbc, bay area news. san francisco's ocean beach and many beaches and waterways across the bay area are cleaner today, thanks to all the volunteers who turned out yesterday for california coastal cleanup day in ocean beach. caltrans partnered with a local

organization called refuse, refuse for a cleanup event. it was also the cleanup day across the state. it's a statewide campaign to keep beaches clean. along with this one, cleanups took place at several beaches across the bay. we got about 200 people who showed up who are spreading out along the coast to clean up all the litter and plastic pollution and other toxins that are out there and just picking it up piece by piece. get this volunteers who turned out yesterday received free food and were entered into a raffle to win a visa gift car. well, they captivated us during the paris olympics and captured a team gold medal. and last night, some of the stars of team usa gymnastics, including the g.o.a.t. herself, showed off their skills in the south bay. nbc bay area's marianne favro was there for it all and takes us to the sap center. bethune fire. the crowd went wild as the

to do just that for the 100th time. this morning. the swim is about a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half, depending on the currents. the water is frigid, about 60 degrees, and that doesn't stop these two. a nyjah and maher holly concord. they have been open water swimmers for years. anaya was the youngest person ever to make the alcatraz crossing when she was just eight years old. maythali was the youngest person to swim the strait of medina in italy when she was 15. we both grew up competitive swimmers, and one of our teammates
7:43 am
actually was doing a alcatraz crossing, and she invited us out to see her and her brother do this alcatraz crossing. and we watched and i immediately decided i could do it, too. she was only a year older than me and not that much faster in the pool. so if she could do it, why couldn't i? sometimes we see the sunrise and i get to swim with her and we swim together, and, the skyline is breathtaking. the bridge is breathtaking, and i just feel like nobody really gets that view other than us. so it's kind of our little, intimate moment with the bay and the city that we love so much. i mean, my jaw is on the floor. the sisters, by the way, say anaya is faster, but maythali doesn't mind because she says it means she has someone cheering for her on dry land when she makes it back from alcatraz. our terry mcsweeney was lucky enough to speak with the sisters last night. they discussed a lot,
7:44 am

this afternoon will be slightly warmer than what we had yesterday. we were on a gradual warming trend this weekend and that will definitely continue today, where we see some 90s out towards solano county, further on into east coco gauff livermore also coming in at 90 degrees, some mid 80s for downtown san jose, but that heat continues into san martin. the peninsula, though, should be a stunning day. some 60s and 70s for you there. you'll wish those 60s and 70s were around as we track a warming trend for the start of our workweek. our first full week of fall. here we go. those summer temperatures are going to be back. that risk of fire dangers and to our health as that high pressure traps the pollution closer to the air. these temperatures are looking at some possible triple digits in places like concord, gilroy, fairfield, ukiah, the inner bay, also some 80s and some 90s. and that will continue for our tuesday here. take a look at that map, find your city, and also spread the word that we need to cut back on some of those outdoor activities as we go on into tuesday. as we trend
7:46 am
towards the second half of the week, the good news is it will bring down those temperatures a little bit as a system just to our north will bring in a little bit more of that sea breeze, and we'll bring down those temperatures to the 80s. but it is trending a little warmer as we go on into next week. some 90s as well for our friday san francisco. very warm in the city and the inner bay. as i mentioned through about tuesday. cooler though, as we wake up on our wednesday morning with more of that cloud cover and breeze returning. all right cynthia, thanks. almost 46 past the hour. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, our larry gerston joins us live, taking a closer look at the role presidential polls play in the presidential polls play in the eltion. you'reec some say it's impossible to fix san francisco. they also said you couldn't escape from alcatraz.

the poles for an idea of who's ahead in the race. but how meaningful are these measuring methods? nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here.
7:49 am
hi, larry. good morning. great to see you, as always. can you give us an explanation of truly like do these polls show us what to expect? do they show us not you know what not to expect. where should we begin? and there's so many. yeah, right. every day there's another one. and we really have to get our heads together on this, because there's good ones and bad ones where we should begin. look, polls are snapshots in time. that's all they are. they're asking you how you feel about whatever it is. and when the poll comes out that reflects what you said at that time. polls are also have margins of error. and when we say margins of error, that could be 4 or 5% off one way or the other. typical sometimes more. and so when you see that in a poll, they say, well, we're off. we could be off three, 4 or 5%. you got to realize, especially in a close one, that may not be as much as you think. and finally, kira, some polls are better than others simply because of the people they choose to interview. for example, of regular voters or voters who are going to be
7:50 am
voting for sure, likely voters or just registered voters, whether you're going to have different kinds of methods, stem stem. sorry. cell phones, landlines. even online. all these things tell us different things and some are more accurate than others. and finally, demography. women versus men. different race of age. all these things. you got to make sure they're reflective of your population. all that comes in a poll and they're very different. and speaking of different, we have we have national polls and we have state polls. and as we know, some states are blue states. some states are red states. do you find that some polls are more important than others? well, they're both important. national polls give you the big picture. they tell you where we're going. you know, what's the trajectory? is somebody moving up higher? coming down. you see, kamala harris right now seems to be inching up. that tells you something over time. but it's the state polls. there you have it. i love these because these reflect smaller populations. and
7:51 am
therefore, by the way, the margin of errors can be greater. but look what you see in these polls. wisconsin harris by one, michigan by three, pennsylvania by one. nevada, north carolina, even up even. even arizona even. what are we telling you here? it said it doesn't matter in a sense, is to try to predict who's going to win those states even six weeks out, because it's so close. one candidate could be up by 2 or 3 points in the poll, but actually down in real life because of that margin of error. so read those things. but when you do, i don't want to say take them with a grain of salt. but let's remember the margins of error. make it unlikely that anybody is really that far ahea. and not to mention, you know, i've seen people be interviewed in some of these swing states, and some of them even argue like i saw a man speaking from north carolina. well believing this wasn't a swing state because trump won there. the last two elections. so it really does vary, doesn't it? well, larry, we always appreciate your insight. happy to be here. 44 more days to go. but who's counting? thanks. so much. see
