"early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you are with me,i'm frances rivera. authorities are searching for multiple suspects who opened fire on a large group of people outside of a lounge in birmingham, alabama, saturday. four people were killed and 17 others were injured.

police have identified three of the deceased victims as 21-year-old anitra hollerman, carlos mccain and taj booker. they were pronounced dead at the scene. the fourth victim is an adult male who died at a nearby hospital. officials are still working to identify him. nbc's priya sridhar has the details. >> reporter: an urgent manhunt under way in birmingham, alabama. after authorities say shots were fired outside of a hookah and cigar lounge in a crowd entertainment district just after 11:00 p.m. saturday night. officials say multiple suspects got out of a vehicle and opened fire, killing four and injuring 17 others. >> you've got to go that way. >> reporter: authorities believe the attack was targeted and say a fully automatic weapon was used before the suspects fled the scene by vehicle.

>> we believe the individual that was targeted is among the deceased. we believe that there was a hit, if you will, on that particular person as far s, you know, someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed. >> reporter: officials relying on the community and using surveillance video in their search. >> we know that there are people in our community who do have information who know who is responsible, who know what led up to this. >> reporter: derek gun was near the scene. >> at first we thought what was that? a backfire? we heard two or three more and then we heard -- and literally everybody on the patio we hit the deck. we hit the ground. >> reporter: and as this community grapples with the tragedy, the search for the suspects guess on. >> our desire, our priority s is to take killers and shooters off the street. we owe it to the victims. we owe it to the victims' families. we owe it to the victims who are no longer with us. >> thanks for that report. now to the latest in the race for the white house. new polling from nbc news suggests vice president kamala harris is gaining ground in her

lead against former president trump, but the result is still within the margin of error. nbc's brie jackson joins us now. hi, brie. what more does this polling tell us about how the voters see c candidates? >> there are areas where former president trump is seen as the stronger candidate and that is on issues like the border and the economy. now, while harris has an advantage when it comes to being competent and effective, more voters also see her as having the mental and physical health to serve as president. the former president trump, he's still refusing to commit to another debate, even after vice president harris accepted an invitation from cnn for a debate on october 23rd. mr. trump says it's too late to keep debating because early voting has already started. in a new interview mr. trump indicated that no matter what happens, this is the last time

that he will run for president. >> if you are not successful this time, do you see yourself running again in four years? >> no, i don't. no, i don't. i think that that will be -- that will be it. i don't see that at all. >> vice president harris was in new york yesterday for a wall street fundraiser. her campaign says she raised $27 million. that's the biggest total since president biden dropped out of the race. harris announced that she will lay out more of her vision for the economy in a speech on wednesday. meanwhile, former president trump, he has a rally tonight in pennsylvania. frances? >> brie jackson for us. brie, thank you. a rare behind the scenes look at the secret service's huge security operation ahead of the united nations general assembly in new york where president biden and leaders from across the world will meet this week. nbc's tom winter has this nbc news exclusive.

authorities say 37-year-old darryl mickels jumped a turnstile while wielding a knife. police confront him, then it escalates. bless say he is then seen lunging at an officer. moments later shots fired, spiking mickels but also one of the responding officers and two bystanders including one man shot in the head, now in critical condition. his family questioning the police response. >> there is no reason why any bullets should have been flying in that subway station at any point. the officers did not deescalate that appropriately and he was shot in the back of the head and now he's fighting for his life. >> reporter: the nypd defending the officers' response. >> we did the best we could to pro protect our lives and the lives of people on that train. >> reporter: the man has pled not guilty with charges involved

with the shooting and an investigation is undergoing. george solis, nbc news, new york. california governor gavin newsom signed a new law banning all plastic shopping bags. thin plastic bags were already banned but shoppers could buy thicker plastic bags that were said to be recyclable and reusable. the measure will go into effect in 2026. a jetblue flight made an emergency landing in kansas this weekend after pilots were alerted to smoke in the cargo hold. the plane carrying 130 passengers landed at sienna regional airport without incident. no injuries were reported. the federal aviation administration said it will investigate. all eyes on the caribbean and the gulf as a system develops. let's vurn to violeta yas. >> we will be keeping a close eye on this over the next couple

of days. we are watching the gulf of mexico especially here with conditions expected to develop through the next several days. we may be looking at a tropical depression by, let's say, the next day or two. we have a 90% chance that this does eventually become helene, although still a ways away, the development zone starts just east of central america. we will see showers and thunderstorms there, eventually this pushes between cuba and mexico, entering the gulf of mexico where conditions may be favorable for that intensification. now, in terms of where this is headed. still a bit unclear. again, this is still going to be developing through the course of the next couple of days or maybe more of a westward shift, for example, toward louisiana or perhaps an eastward shift which some models are indicating taking this a little closer to florida. all of the gulf states need to be on the lookout and keeping close tabs on this as we get more information through the course of the next couple of days but looking very likely that we have at least a tropical depression if not a tropical storm here through the course of
