a fall warm-up. here's a live look outside for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking an incoming heat advisory for the bay area. this is today in the bay. and good monday morning to you. thanks for starting your week with us. i'm marcus washington. hope you're coming off a great weekend. i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike some updates when it comes to those roadways that were closed. but also no one updated mother nature telling her that fall actually started yesterday. and because today is the first full day of fall, with fall starting yesterday morning at 5:44 a.m, well, we are dealing with some higher heat, so this is our first 24 hours of seeing our fall season. and now we have a heat advisory in effect for much of the east bay into the south bay, as well as the santa cruz mountains. so today it's going to be hot. but at least we do have a nice, cool, refreshing

start to the day. we're in the upper 40s in sonoma and santa rosa, 47 degrees. while it's 55 in oakland and 61 in san jose. a cool morning leading to this, where we are going to have a moderate to major heat risk for parts of the south bay, as well as the east bay. those areas in red where we are looking at temperatures this afternoon headed for the mid to upper 90s and a few triple digits. so we'll talk more about this and the cooldown ahead. that's in a few minutes, but mike, you were saying that caltrans crews are very busy over the weekend. they were and they were very efficient. so just earlier, a little earlier than expected before 4:00 this morning, they did reopen southbound 680. those lanes were closed for the majority of the weekend into this morning and into the late night hours. again, southbound 680 is reopened without any problem. you have a new concrete surface through many of those lanes as you head southbound. there are a couple of more project weekends in the future will warn you, of course, about them, as we did for this one on

independent investigation. judge cordell has been requested to investigate whether assistant sheriff monahan has suffered retaliation for participating in this independent investigation. a corpus says all of this chaos is putting san mateo county's safety on the line, particularly at the county's correctional facility. marcus all right, chris, thank you. well, in the south bay, a person has died. this is after their car went over a cliff crashing below. it happened in mount hamilton yesterday afternoon. this is near state route 130 and kincade road. that vehicle reportedly fell more than 100 yards from the roadway. cal fire and chp were involved in the recovery operation. there's no word just yet on what led to that crash. happening today, san francisco police will hold a virtual town hall in response to a recent officer-involved shooting at the powell street bart station. the incident unfolded ten days ago. the suspect was injured. police

you have a pool or know someone with a pool, it might be a great day to take a dip. it's going to be a hot one. and tomorrow the heat advisory continues. but the good thing about this little spike in heat is it only lasts two days. by midweek on wednesday, we're starting to feel some cooler air coming down and coming in as we get a look at dublin. we're starting out temperatures in the low 60s at 8:00 at noon. it is already 87 degrees and we're headed for the mid 90s. today and we are going to have those temperatures up to 99 in concord, 96 in santa rosa. even warming up in san francisco with a high of 84. so we'll talk more about that cooldown coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching those gas prices. how are they looking? you know, looking about the same as we ended last week. we'll talk about the south bay's best. 419 today though, there's one good spot. it's national petroleum on old san francisco road in sunnyvale. same for

5:20 am
parts of the inner bay. so you're going to see those temperatures cranking up today, but also it will look hazy outside as our air quality turns moderate, which we do typically see on these hotter days. the air isn't mixing out as much. we don't have as much of a breeze, and all of those pollutants make our air quality a little bit more unhealthy and will be moderate for today. so as we take a look at what to expect, our temperatures go from mid 50s in the morning here into the low 80s, so even the city will be warming up with a high of 84 degrees in the north bay. it's going to be in the mid 90s this afternoon, 96 in moraga, concord, 99 degrees and 92 in san jose. tomorrow in some spots it's about the same, while other areas get some slight relief. we'll see that in the peninsula as well as the south bay, with san jose's high going from low 90s to upper 80s. so we're making some progress. and in san francisco and along the coast on wednesday, it is much cooler as
5:21 am
we see those highs drop back to the upper 60s. the fog will return and that will help us out in the valleys as well. looking at morgan hill, hot start to the week wednesday, it is looking really nice, but we do still have some warm temperatures ahead by the end of the week. you can see those steps just going up and down the battle that we always see in the fall between the hot air and the cool air. and as of now, as we take a look at the 7-day forecast, the hot temperatures will be winning the battle as we are just now starting out with fall and then looking at san francisco, going from low 80s today to upper 60s by wednesday, and then back into the seconds for the rest of the week. mike, you're seeing the first signs of the commute showing up. yeah a typical struggle between a number of cars and number of lanes available. we're having this point where we change the slowing drive across the bridge at merritt island, because there are more cars and can go through at speed. so we're looking at that typical build highway 4 should show the next oh, there

morning, we're learning pope francis has a mild case of the flu. this is forcing the vatican to cancel all of his events today. you may recall the pope was hospitalized earlier this year in april. he spent three days in the hospital with bronchitis. the vatican says the pontiff is resting for a few days before expected to head to belgium later this week. happening today, the city of oakland is set to rename a street in honor of martial arts icon bruce lee. the ceremonial signed for bruce lee way is set to be unveiled at 10:00 this morning on broadway and garnet. now, that is that area where lee had a studio and where he developed his expression of martial arts. the school is dedicated to the teachings of lee and his mentor, james jim lee. we spoke with one person whose father was a student of both. it's just the proper way of paying somebody back, you know, paying them back to what he gave, what now they're giving him, remembering him. when we first met him, we were just, like, frozen. because there was

cool down in the overnight hours for the most part, and we are in the upper 40s for santa rosa and sonoma. it is 54 in danville and 56 in south san jose. but then as we go into the day, it's going to look hazy. and with the high pressure that we get that causes the hotter temperatures, we also don't get the air mixing out as much. so those pollutants just hang around. they settle into the valleys and that affects what we're breathing in moderate air quality. some of the worst of that in santa clara valley, as well as the east bay, north bay is going to see some moderate air quality for today. and most likely tomorrow as well. a look at our high temperatures. los gatos today 96 degrees. air conditioning on full blast will be 99. in gilroy and also looking at some mid to upper 90s for much of the east bay, with concord up to 99 degrees 101 in antioch and in hayward 91 degrees. some low 90s for redwood city and in daly city a nice, comfortable 73 degrees. it will also be 73 for

the outer sunset, but for downtown san francisco, the mission district today expects some 80s and mid 90s for much of the north bay. from novato to napa, all the way up to clear lake. so looking at santa rosa and what to expect with those temperatures in the 90s, it's only slightly better tomorrow. but look at the big cooldown that we have coming on wednesday, and then it starts to come back up on thursday and then it will be hot. to start out our weekend. but then the temperatures coming back down. so as we typically see for the beginning of fall, it's the battle of the air masses where it's hot. one day it's cool the next, and we'll be seeing those temperatures going back and forth throughout the week in san francisco. it's the fog that rolls in that really brings some relief, and we'll see that coming in on wednesday. mike. the bay bridge seems slower right now. it does seem to fill in right here at the toll plaza. and we saw those sensors across the span. it may be these low clouds drifting around. sometimes visibility influences the speeds we can drive. haven't

had any warnings from chp, but you do see things starting to clear up better. there was an earlier crash reported just past the toll plaza. that might also mean while the backup is bigger there and that could skew the recovery here. we have slowing coming off of san rafael for eastbound 580. that's typical as a crew dispatches about this time from that side of the bay. as we're getting over from the richmond side, we have the build heading down past the area on the east shore freeway, but not a problem on the approach to the bridge itself. still reports of a crash highway 37 around merritt island hasn't been a major problem. no backup toward 29, but we're looking at that as one incident and the build for highway four and 242 pushing down in toward pleasant hill and walnut creek. the interchange moves smoothly. so does the caldecott tunnel. easy drive down 680, which opened right on time. we're actually a little earlier than on time here. castro valley wide shows the build and the bridges san mateo and dunbarton are clear back to you. thank you. mike. well, happening now, paper or plastic will soon no longer be a choice at california grocery stores. this comes after governor gavin
