tv Today in the Bay NBC September 23, 2024 6:00am-7:00am PDT
6:00 am
right now at six. a shakeup at san mateo county sheriff's office. new accusations. the sheriff is making against another high ranking county official, a reason behind firing the assistant chief. hundreds on strike. hotel workers in san francisco walking off the job. the demands they're making this morning and tracking that fall. warm-up. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the incoming heat advisory for the bay area. this is today in the bay we're supposed to be saying fall cooldown masai. and this is fall. so we think no. good morning to you on this monday. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that monday morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but let's get a look at the temperatures with kari. yeah. and it's going to be another hot one and even hotter than yesterday. this will be the peak of the heat. and we do have
6:01 am
a cool morning start. so we're in the upper 50s in dublin. it's 57 in palo alto and 54 in san francisco. while san jose is walking out the door to about 60 degrees. looks really nice for now. we'll be at 67 degrees at 9:00. and then as we go throughout the day, it heats up so fast we'll be in the 90s for much of the afternoon and then cooling down later this evening into the low 80s, but we'll be up to 82 degrees in san jose, 97 in dublin, 92 in san jose. so we're seeing a lot of 90s here while we will be in the 80s in san francisco. so we'll talk about that cooldown ahead in just a few minutes. mike, you're saying that caltrans was very productive over the weekend? that's right. those of us who joined us last week know that there was that full closure over the weekend to southbound 680 from acosta down to the 580 interchange. that cleared up a little bit earlier than 4:00 this morning. great stuff. they replaced a lot of pavement with cement, so the concrete should be a much more durable surface, a smoother ride. but they've got a couple more weekends to go on
6:02 am
that project. so we'll warn you. of course, the rest of the bay moves pretty smoothly. the south bay first slowing easing up a bit. we have a crash on the shoulder 101 right around march, and there may be a traffic break coming down the east shore freeway around university. there's a crash at maritime. back to you. thanks, mike. 601 right now, san mateo county sheriff is going to battle against the county executive, accusing him of bullying and interference. now, the sheriff is threatening to take the issue to the state. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom, this morning. and, kris, the impact on public safety, that is the question i'm sure a lot of people have. right. so this is, you know, a political issue between two parties. but at the end of the day, that's what people in san mateo county want to know. how does this impact my safety in my county? it was hardly a quiet weekend in san mateo county, where sheriff cristina corpus announced that she is now investigating the county executive for interfering with her ability to do her job. the sheriff's announcement and call for san mateo county supervisors
6:03 am
to investigate. mike callaway for alleged interference with unions and bullying happened late last night. karl cook has not responded to our request for comment yet, but the sheriff told us that she will take this complaint all the way to the state if it goes unheard by the county supervisors. i sent a formal complaint letter to the president of the board of supervisors calling for the bullying tactics of the county executive, mike callaway, to cease immediately. let me make this clear. i will not tolerate further interference in my lawful duties as sheriff. now, this turn comes just days after the sheriff fired assistant sheriff ryan monahan. she says, for not sharing her vision for the department, but which some supervisors say looks like retaliation for speaking to retired judge ladoris cordell, who is currently investigating personnel issues in the sheriff's department, which corpus has led since january of
6:04 am
2023. so the statement in part from the board of supervisors, reads the timing of the sheriff's action and information provided by assistant sheriff monahan suggests possible retaliation against assistant sheriff monahan for participating in judge cordell's independent investigation. now, judge cordell has been requested to investigate whether assistant sheriff monahan has suffered retaliation for participating in this independent investigation. a corpus says all of this chaos is putting san mateo county's safety on the line, particularly at the county's correctional facility. so again, this all played out friday evening, sunday evening. so we have lots of phone calls that we're making this morning. laura. yeah. busy. no kidding. thank you very much, chris. well, happening today, san francisco police holding a virtual town hall in response to a recent officer-involved shooting at the powell street bart station. this incident unfolded about ten days ago. the suspect was injured. police say it started as a confrontation
6:05 am
with an armed man sitting in a stolen car near the station. that's when the suspect took off running first into a liquor store. police say he started firing at officers at the station, and that's when officers returned fire. today's town hall starts at 3:00 this afternoon in the south bay. a person has died after their car went over a cliff, crashing below. it happened off of mount hamilton yesterday afternoon near state route 130 and kincade road. the vehicle reportedly fell more than 100 yards from the roadway. cal fire and chp were involved in the recovery operation. no word yet on what led up to the crash. well, happening now, hundreds of hotel workers in san francisco are now on strike. and this all comes after a contract expired in august. the hospitality workers are part of the unite here local two. they include housekeepers and servers. so union members are seeking a new contract with hyatt, hilton and marriott hotel
6:06 am
chains. those workers were on the picket line at three hotels around union square yesterday. we have, you know, our our wages is one of our key issues. many of our members commute from far away. the cost of living has gone up exponentially in the past couple of years. and so big wage increases are really important for us maintaining our medical benefits and having a decent retirement. now, in a statement, hyatt said that it's disappointed workers decided to strike while it remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith. it has plans to place a minimize or they have plans in place, i should say, to minimize any impact on hotel operations. hyatt said that western saint francis remains open and they remain available to meet with the union to reach an agreement. now to a look at our nation's capital. this morning. and this is where later this week, the house is expected to vote on a short term bill to avoid a government shutdown. right now, funding is set to run out on october 1st. speaker mike johnson, he's promoting that
6:07 am
measure, which does not include any part of the save account. the act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. however, the bill does include an additional $231 million for the secret service. that bill would keep the government running through december 20th after a covid summer surge here in california. medical professionals are once again urging the public to get vaccinated against covid and the flu. there are three covid vaccines to choose from. that includes two mrna vaccines you may be familiar with pfizer and moderna's vaccines from the past years. the third option is the only non mrna updated covid vaccine from novavax. vaccines are recommended for those six months or older. the same is true for the annual flu vaccine, as well as the rsv vaccine that's available, particularly for older adults. over 75. vaccinations are one of the best preventative health measures
6:08 am
that we can take. we've been using vaccines really for centuries, right? and it really works with your immune system. it gets your immune system to recognize these viruses and protect against infection. doctors say those over 65 and above with underlying health conditions and infants heading into their first winter season should also get an rsv vaccine. let's take a live look out in walnut creek this morning as you can see, cars on the road moving along weather wise. well, i guess you could say it's nice and pleasant this morning. the question is, how will it be later today? meteorologist kari hall has been letting us know that a summer is not gone just yet, weather wise. yeah we're under a microclimate weather alert due to the heat advisory in effect today. our first full day of fall. and it is a hot start to it. it continues tomorrow. but then as we go through the middle of the week. the good thing is that the spike
6:09 am
in temperatures won't last long. we'll get a break midweek. and then we're looking at those temperatures still going up and down in the forecast. but it's the santa cruz mountains, the south bay, much of the inland east bay that will be under the heat advisory this afternoon, which includes walnut creek, going from upper 60s this morning to seeing those highs in the mid to upper 90s today and then cooling down right around sunset. so we're going to have a couple of these hot days. we'll talk about the cooldown coming up in a few minutes. mike you're seeing those gas prices remaining high for many spots. yeah. you know, the good news i guess, is it wasn't a lot of change over the weekend. the bad news is it's still about the same. south bay is 419. we found one more bargain because of all of you reporting, we have national petroleum on old san francisco road in sunnyvale. same price point for contra costa county. concord has clayton gas and wash on clayton road. again, that's in the city of concord. and then we're going north to solano county, where we go up a dime. their best is 429 in vallejo. valero on redwood parkway. i talked about those reports. you can get them. you
6:10 am
can give them at gasbuddy.com. we'll show you the traffic report as well. it's pretty smooth drive for this monday morning. nothing really unexpected except for a little more slowing coming out of contra costa county. highway 24. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. there was an earlier crash near the area over at the toll plaza itself. we do see some flashing lights that cleared from the overcrossing went to the parking lot. they've now cleared from the area, but there are some low clouds. just watch that back to you. yeah, a little foggy out there that it is. all right. well, back on earth next on today in the bay, we're going to show you the all new video from this morning's landing with an american astronaut on board. and it turns out gen z loves a good deal. we're going to take a look at this generation's obsession with bargain shopping. plus, doesn't kill you. makes you stronger. stand a little taller. doesn't mean i'm lonely when i'm alone. and here we go. a brand new season of the kelly clarkson show. i go one on one with the star to talk about what she's

6:18 am
returning to nbc bay area for its sixth season. that's right. we've got a sneak peek. kelly clarkson is performing on the roof of 30 rockefeller center. and if you're just hearing about it now, where have you been? get yourself to 30 rock right now, please. everybody's running to the roof. big stars are all coming out for the show, which is happening on the rooftop of 30 rock in new york city. guests include halle berry, kelsey grammer, colin farrell and a performance from keith urban. i also got the chance to catch up with kelly about what she's most excited about. selfishly, as an artist, i always look forward to like the random musical opportunities that kind of arise. but i also get very excited. like i've been telling everybody i got back from, like, summer break with my kids, and i just saw this list of people that are not only in premiere week, but like just on the season. a fan favorite on the show, of course. kelly clarkson puts her own spin on popular songs for that fun karaoke segment. one artist, she told me
6:19 am
that she's really loving right now, like so many of us, chappell roan, who just won the vma for best new artist. i like wore her out this summer at my ranch. i like while i was gardening, while i was mowing, whatever i was doing. even riding around my property. like i, i love her so much. she. benson boone. fletcher. i've just been into this, like, younger crowd. i love what they're doing. it's very, very cool. so yeah, i'm stoked you're going to hear several of her songs. she's all geared up and ready. season six of the kelly clarkson show premieres at 3:00 this afternoon. you can watch it every week right here on nbc bay area. i bet you chappell was picturing that when she wrote her songs. she's thinking i picture someone riding a lawn mower riding exactly. really hot to go. i know you made it. all right, let's talk about this forecast that we're experiencing right now. weather wise, it's still hot. yes. and it will be hot the next couple of days. but this is the time of year where
6:20 am
we get the what we like to call the battle of the air masses. so i think summer is winning for us for today. and then we're going to see a little bit of some fall here and there. but as we take a live look outside in san francisco, you can see this very shallow layer of fog. this is going to clear out quickly. the city will be warming up today and it will look hazy with some moderate air quality, with some of the worst of that air quality in the santa clara valley and the east bay. on these days, when we get the high pressure causing the hot temperatures and causing the air to sink, all of those pollutants don't really get mixed out. so it is a little bit more unhealthy to spend more time outside. as we take a look at dublin and the changes as the sun rises will be in the upper 60s and then at 1:00 92 degrees, so you can see just how fast those temperatures heat up for us. for today in the upper 90s there. let's zoom into the south bay, where we're going to see a high of 92. in cupertino and in san jose, while los gatos will hit a high of 9699. in gilroy today and mostly some upper
6:21 am
seconds for the east bay, with walnut creek up to 98 degrees, 101 in antioch and 90 in fremont and we'll be in the 90s as well for parts of the peninsula. redwood city, and palo alto in the 90s. today, while daly city will reach a high of 73, and it will also be in the low 70s for the ingleside district and the outer sunset mission district. today, 82 degrees and 96 in sonoma and 102 in ukiah. let's get a look at santa rosa and what to expect tomorrow. still pretty warm with some low 90s, but we get some significant relief on wednesday. take a look at that 71 degrees and then we start to see those temperatures coming back up for the end of the week. but the weekend is looking comfortably warm. still not fall like yet, but we are going to have some hot days ahead and looking at overall it will more have more of a summer feel rather than fall. while san francisco will see temperatures in the low 80s, today will be in the 60s by wednesday. mike,
6:22 am
you're concerned about that backup at the bay bridge? yeah, because we knew it's going to happen about this time every day. but look right here folks. these hov lanes are not moving. well, when you take away the hov advantage, that's usually because there's something going on outside of just your traffic volume. build reports of that earlier traffic break between university and the span itself proved they couldn't find the incident. i think they found it just past the toll plaza. a word of everything being off to the left hand shoulder now as you get through the area. but that means there was at least a temporary stop in traffic just past heading toward those. the incline and those metering lights. we'll continue to follow the progress we hope we do have a little more build toward that richmond bridge, and some folks may be choosing that if they're north of berkeley. but just a note right now. no need to divert your drive. we do have another crash on westbound highway four coming toward bailey, and that's really jamming up things out of pittsburgh and into bay point. so watch for that for highway four. as we look at the travel times, we're looking at a lot more travel time here at the top number highway four, over to 680
6:23 am
itself. kirker pass road will get you out of a lot of that backup. and that is going to start to build now. but so far that's a bigger advantage. 680 moves smoothly, though, from the benicia bridge straight down in through walnut creek. here's the south bay with that second build of the morning starting up and the rest of the bay moving pretty smoothly. no major surprises. back to you. thank you very much, mike. next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds a contractor has one step left to finish a job, but he's ghosting a customer. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next

thanks to his new water heater. he tapped in consumer investigator chris gilmore's team for some help. good morning. you might understand why michael in san jose was sort of boiling. he paid fast water heater company $139 bucks to install a new heater, including 244 bucks for a city permit. but two months later, no permit. plus, the installer wasn't responding to his calls, so michael asked us for help. we contacted fast water heater. it told us it fumbled his permit. it wasn't his fault and that they would take care of it. it did. michael got a permit the same day that $244 permit. the city tells us permits and inspections are required for water heater installations. and they're allowed after
6:27 am
installation to account for emergencies and such. the permit office recommends property owners make contractors get the permit because whoever gets it holds the liability for the work. you can contact us just like michael did. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. thank you chris. 626 right now. and we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including new airstrikes from israel in lebanon overnight. the urgent warning now being issued to americans. plus, we're live in san francisco with the latest move to help the city's embattled public school system. and some controversial bike lanes in san francisco could soon be changed. once again. the meeting today, aiming to shape the future of valencia street. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay

6:31 am
temperatures and when we'll eventually see that seasonal cooldown. this is today in the bay. good monday morning. hope you're coming off a great weekend. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. and if you are outside this weekend you probably noticed it was still quite warm out there. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect weather wise today and say today. is it going to be the peak of the heat? yes. today is the warmest day and still pretty hot in some of the inland valleys tomorrow as well. but take a look at this beautiful view. we have this morning of the sun rising from our sutro tower camera, looking at san francisco, where you can see the fog rolling over the bay. the lights in the city, and the sun coming up. so it's going to be a nice start there. and as we go into the afternoon, all of these areas shaded in orange will be included in a heat advisory that begins at 11:00. the bay and the coast will be cool today. and then looking at our current temperatures where we are starting out with some sweater weather, you'll be peeling those sweaters off as we go throughout
6:32 am
the day and our temperatures heat up into the 90s, so we'll get a look ahead to some changes. and when we do get some relief that's coming up in our full microclimate forecast. kari. thank you. well, in just a few hours, we're expecting to learn more about the man arrested in connection with a deadly shooting of a vta bus driver. we do know that the two were coworkers today in the bay's bob redell joining us live with more on that investigation this morning. bob good morning, jim marcus. and we could learn more. again, as you were alluding to at a news conference at 130 this afternoon, that's when the santa clara county sheriff's office will hold a joint press conference with the valley transportation authority, the vta, to update us on this latest development. that latest development is this. yesterday afternoon, detectives with the sfo arrested this man, duc minh bui. this was an arrest made near his home in san jose. he is 33 years old. he is accused of shooting and killing a coworker who was a bus driver at the vta just before 10:00 on friday
6:33 am
night. this was at the vta shibuya division yard on south seventh street in san jose. the victim died at the scene. we do not know what motivated bui to allegedly shoot this person. he has been booked in the santa clara county main jail on a murder charge. now, this is the second deadly shooting at the valley transportation authority in three years. you'll recall back in 2021, an employee shot and killed nine coworkers at a vta facility before taking his own life. with this incident, it's triggering to some of some of our folks we really thought we were, you know, getting past some of the some of the stuff from before. and obviously this is going to spur a lot of that back. we want to make sure that our employees understand that this is a different incident than what had happened a while back. we are here to support them. this is a different environment. the vta says it's offering mental health support for its employees. after
6:34 am
friday's shooting, they point out they have built a strong support program with the union that represents the workers since the 2021 shooting. reporting live bob redell today in the bay. always a tough one there. all right, bob, thank yo. new overnight israel launches more airstrikes in lebanon within the last hour. the death toll grew at least 182 people have died and hundreds of others are hurt. that's according to lebanon's health ministry today. israel is now warning people in southern lebanon to move away from hezbollah positions amid more frequent bombings there. americans have also been told to evacuate. israel and hezbollah, which is an ally of hamas, have been fighting since the start of the israel-hamas war last year. police in the east bay combing through security video, hoping to identify the suspects behind a brazen smash and grab. this happened at the kay jewelers inside of concord sun valley mall around one yesterday afternoon. police say five men wearing dark clothing ran into

the store and just started smashing the cases. the thieves were in and out in less than two minutes. it's still not clear how much they got away with. i just feel bad because i think i've seen the people there before and like the owners, and they just look nice. i just hope for the best for them. you know, like the people working there, because that's trauma. now, police say no one was physically hurt. kay jewelers is boarded up, and it's not clear just yet when they will reopen. in san francisco, an extraordinary move to support san francisco unified school district mayor london breed, announcing she is creating what she calls a school stabilization team. today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live this morning. ginger, the district is already under the state oversight committee. that's correct. good morning. laura. since may, the state has been overlooking the school board's spending. now, the
6:36 am
school board kept things vague yesterday as far as their agenda. it said that it would discuss public employee performance evaluation. there's a number of very significant and very concerning issues that that the board of education has become aware of and that the board has not received, full information on on what our plan is as a district, to be able to address those issues and move forward. and that is the school board president calling the issues as if usc is facing very significant and very concerning. the district has announced a plan to close some schools next year, citing declining enrollment and a revenue shortage. a list of those schools was supposed to come out last week, but instead that anticipated announcement has been pushed back to october. the school board has released a list of priorities for superintendent matt wayne to focus on in the
6:37 am
coming months, including balancing the budget. now, after yesterday's meeting, mayor london breed joined the conversation, saying she is allocating $8.4 million in unallocated funds to help stabilize public schools. not only that, she says she's also putting together a team of city leaders and education experts, calling it a school stabilization team. now, that will be co-led by maria su of the department of children, youth and their families. and phil ginsberg, the general manager of recreation and parks department. now, this is not the first time that those two have collaborated. su and ginsberg partnered during the pandemic to open community hubs in the city when schools closed. now, the former superintendent of long beach unified, as well as a former member of the state board of education, will serve as a special advisor, that is, doctor carl cohen. other members include people from the offices of the comptroller, the treasurer, the tax collector, and the human services and human resources department. now, in an
6:38 am
open letter to sfusd families, mayor breed said that she would not be where she is if it were not for the public school system and in so she will do whatever she can to support those families that are going through a really tough time. you know, sfusd is the seventh largest district in the state. it's got over 120 schools with over 50,000 students. so these decisions are really widely impactful for the city and those families. and students. we'll keep an eye on this as it continues to develop. and you can watch for that on nbcbayarea.com. but for now i'll send it back to you guys. yeah you're right ginger, it affects so many families. thank you very much for the latest. well, also in san francisco, something to talk about. a controversial bike line that could see its final days. the city last year installed a center bike lane on valencia from 15th street to market. you can see there on that map on your screen. so the parked cars act as a barrier between the traffic and
6:39 am
cyclists. but neighbors and business owners quickly complained about the restricted turning options for those cars and the re designated parking spaces. a meeting at the valencia gardens community room will focus on the proposed redesign, which would make the bike line curbside once again. so if approved by the sfmta board this fall, that new line could be installed in january. let's take a live look outside from the south bay this morning. look at that sunrise, folks. already up and out the door. kerry's got a look at our forecast. we're celebrating fall with a look at hot temperatures. yeah. you know we just want one more taste of summer or maybe a few more. over the next few days. we are going to start out cool though, with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s from san francisco to dublin to palo alto in san jose. it is now at 60 degrees. let's head to brentwood, one of our typical hotspots where we are going to see temperatures in the low 70s at 9:00. but we are headed for the upper 90s here today,
6:40 am

to be at 95 in dublin and some mid 90s. also for much of the north bay. then on wednesday this is when it will give us a little taste of fall with highs in the 60s and 70s from the coastal areas to the peninsula into the inland east bay. it will be in the low 80s on wednesday afternoon. so let's go to morgan hill. a look at ten days in our forecast hot today. but we don't see any more of that kind of heat. although our temperatures will be increasing a bit over the next few days into the end of the week. we are looking at some milder weather ahead, so it's definitely feeling more like summer this week. taking a look at our 7-day forecast. but we will get some cooler air coming into san francisco on wednesday as that fog returns. mike, is it looking a little better at the bay bridge maybe not to some folks, but to me it was looking a lot better until just now. we had all lanes at the hov portion of the bridge moving. well, there seems to be a little stoppage again once again, but i believe they were clearing out whatever was going on just past the toll

breed is concerned about ongoing issues with the san francisco unified school district. she's creating what she calls a school stabilization team. that announcement comes just hours after the school board held an emergency closed door meeting yesterday. the district has announced a plan to close some schools next year, citing declining enrollment and revenue shortage. a list of those schools was supposed to come out last week but has been pushed back to october. let's get a check of the forecast. yeah starts out nice and cool around the bay area, but we've been talking about this, the peak of the heat coming today. and there will be some relief midweek, but still some warm temperatures ahead. and despite those temperatures it's fall not summer vacation. we're looking at traffic patterns that mimic that typically slowing. and we have a new crash north 87 coming into downtown. so that will be a factor for the build on the guadalupe parkway. and all morning we've had a smooth drive past the earlier closure that's all open south. 683 san ramon. well, we all know the today show
