>> if you missed the game last we'll have more on that. meantime, election day just over six weeks away. a new nbc poll shows just how that race is changing here in the final stretch. in just a moment, we will break down the numbers with steve kornacki for how the momentum has shifted from vice president harris to the major issues where donald trump is far ahead. but we are going to start with the very latest in the middle east and the escalation where overnight the israeli military conducted a series of air strikes. >> it comes after hezbollah launched dozens of rockets at israel over the weekend and unprecedented attacks targeting thousands of pagers and walkie talkies. we've got all of this covered including what all of this means for the u.s. general assembly that gathers right here in new york later this week. but we are going to start in israel with the very latest there. we've got nbc chief correspondent richard engel with the very latest details. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. you can listen to what israeli and hezbollah officials are

exploded in the middle of the street. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says israel is now shifting focus to hezbollah. we hit hezbollah with a string of strikes it didn't imagine. if hezbollah didn't get the message, i promise you it will get the message, he said. netanyahu hinting at responsibility for audacious attacks on hezbollah last week when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by the group suddenly exploded, a plot one u.s. official described to nbc news as james bond style. even though this facility is underground, it is state-of-the-art. they have operating facilities here. four babies have been born already since yesterday. it's about 15 acres of underground wars. lebanon has nothing like this. the u.s. state department is urging americans to leave the

country. >> richard, thank you. given those rising tensions in the middle east and around the world, the annual un general assembly here in new york could be one of the most contentious in years. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with a closer look at the largest gathering of world leaders and the increased security presence there as well. first of all, good morning to you, steph. how are authorities preparing? >> reporter: well, good morning, craig. this is arguably the most complicated security operation anywhere on the planet. you have more than 140 world leaders converging on this very small space on the east side of manhattan. there is a huge security presence, as you would imagine. most visibly, you have the nypd. they've blocked off roads, set up barriers. a number of their vehicles are here. but there's also security that can't be seen. you have snipers on rooftops and you also have drones. among the agencies on the ground here, the u.s. secret service, which as you know has been under a lot of pressure and scrutiny

following those failed assassination attempts on donald trump. attempts on donald trump. on the ground, there is a command center, so representatives from every single one of those agencies will be in there. it will be monitoring events on the ground, responding and coordinating their responses in real-time, craig. >> steph, oftentimes when we see these gatherings, there are protests. are we expecting the same here as well? >> reporter: absolutely, craig. it's a huge concern for them because since the october 7th attacks, there have been more than 4,000 protests here in manhattan. it's not just the israel/hamas war. you have russia's invasion of ukraine and then just generally an increase in domestic violence in this country. and that's why law enforcement is saying although this event happens every single year, the challenges this year are unique. days to look forward to that are particularly notable, you've got president biden tomorrow speaking in front of the general assembly.
7:10 am
then on thursday, you have both the israeli president, benjamin netanyahu, as well as the palestinian president on the same day giving speeches, craig. >> thank you. let's turn now to the race to the white house. 43 days to go. in a new nbc news presidential poll shows a major reshaping of the race with vice president harris now leading. but former president trump is scoring high with voters on key issues. we have two reports. we're going to start with nbc's senior correspondent hallie jackson. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning to you. new numbers out now show the vice president has momentum nationally, but former president trump showing strength in some key battlegrounds, meaning, this race remains extremely competitive with new questions this morning on whether the candidates will face off in their second debate, one harris wants but one trump does not. the kickoff to a six-week sprint before election day with vice president harris ramping up the

7:14 am
president. >> it's interesting because when harris got in the race, you may remember her poll numbers did not look that good. a lot of people were saying, is this going to help democrats at all? is it going to change anything? positive or negative? look at the major names there. there is harris with the highest positive score. harris 48%, 45%. when we first polled harris as she was about to get in this race -- this was back in july -- this positive number for her was just 32 points. so he's jumped 16 points. not much movement anywhere else. then there is also just this, asking folks about who represents change better. and this is striking in our poll. harris more than tripled. she's the incumbent vice president in an unpopular administration. >> let's look at the republicans right now. in terms of the former president, where is he strong? where might he be a little weaker?
7:15 am
yeah, he is strong on -- these are what voters say are the two biggest and most important issues to them, and that would be the border and immigration, asking which candidate is better by a 21-point margin. voters in our polls say trump better than harris. and then dealing with the economy, again, nine-point margin, trump better than harris. when you ask folks what they consider the most important issues, you're looking at them right there. >> steve, always good to see you. thank you. hoda? thanks, craig. turning to a deadly mass shooting in alabama over the weekend. police say multiple suspects are still on the run after opening fire at a popular night spot in birmingham. at least four people were killed, 17 others hurt. priya joins us right now. she's got the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. no word on a motive just yet. police say they do believe it was part of a targeted hit. we want to warn you the video you are about to see may be disturbing. an urgent manhunt is underway in birmingham this morning after

say they believe an automatic weapon was used after recovering over 100 shell casings at the scene. derek tells me he was at a nearby bar with friends. >> the shots kept firing, fast, rapid. there was one on the ground. we were trying to get everybody in. >> reporter: saturday's incident is one of several mass shootings in birmingham this year. >> this is something we owe it to the victims and their families. >> reporter: the police chief is asking the birmingham community for their help in identifying the gunman as it mourns the latest lives cut short to senseless gun violence. >> we know there are people in our community who do have information who know who is responsible, who know what led up to this and what transpired. >> reporter: and this shooting comes after the city of birmingham partnered with u.s. attorneys and the atf to create an initiative called flip the switch in an effort to get rid of machine gun conversion devices. birmingham police say they do believe one of those devices,
7:18 am
commonly known as a switch, was used in saturday night's shooting. hoda? >> priya, thanks. lots more to get here monday, including the nfl. the kansas city chiefs looking to stay undefeated, taking on the atlanta falcons in sunday night football, and this one went down to the final moments. >> a lot of those kind of zone routes as well. >> mahomes retreats, draws it. juju smith-schuster touchdown! kansas city! >> and with that, they take an eight-point lead. let's fast forward to the end of the game. under a minute to go. falcons in striking distance here. but the chiefs stop them on fourth down. kansas city goes on to win it 22-17. chiefs remain undefeated at 3-0. >> congratulations to you, chiefs. >> they look good. >> all right. >> they look good. >> all right. >> the saints still look good too. >> i know. i was bummed about that one. but congrats to the eagles and all the fans out there. >> look at how big you are.
