speeches of his presidency, addressing the u.n. general assembly here in new york city. white house officials familiar with the speech tell nbc news that the president will focus on the climate crisis and the war in ukraine. but the speech will also be closely watched for how mr. biden will address the israeli bombing of lebanon. for the latest, let's go to brie jackson in d.c. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, frances. israel's air force has pummeled seven lebanon over the last 24 hours killing 500. among them are at least 25 children and 58 women. and more than 1600 people are injured. israeli officials say they struck 1300, quote, terrorist targets linked to hezbollah. israel is accusing the militant group of concealing their extensive arsenal of rockets, missiles and drones in and around civilian homes and have asked residents to evacuate. around 100,000 people have been

displaced. now this was the deadliest day between the two countries since the 2006 israel-hezbollah war. israel has said that the airstrikes will continue and that the country is bracing for significant retaliation. all schools across northern israel are closed, and the area has been declared a no-fly zone. hezbollah attacks have so far been concentrated in the north. but the group's longer-range missiles can reach into the center of the country, including the major cities of tel aviv and jerusalem. hezbollah started firing into israel after the october 7th hamas attack, saying they would only stop if there was a cease-fire in gaza. the attacks have displaced around 60,000 israelis from the border region with lebanon, and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has said that returning them safely to their homes is an official war goal. the pentagon is sending a small

number of reenforcements to the region out of an abundance of caution. and the state department has already asked all american citizens to leave lebanon as the situation keeps spiraling out of control. frances? >> hopefully they get lhome testifily. bt safely. new details have been released about the man accused of trying to assassinate donald trump. >> reporter: in the month leading up to his arrest, ryan routh repeatedly showed up near donald trump's south florida home and golf course. the 58-year-old was in the region for one reason only, to kill donald trump. he gave this hand-written letter saying this was an assassination attempt on donald trump but i am so sorry i failed you. last sunday routh hid here in a

sniper's nest until a secret service agent spotted him and saw the barrel of a rifle aimed directly at him. jumped out of the golf cart and fired at routh. >> this evil would-be assassin got within 500 yards everywhere i stood. >> reporter: prosecutors say two additional license plates, six cell phones and 12 pairs of gloves were found in routh's get away vehicle along with a list of some of mr. trump's upcoming appea appearances. in federal court, a judge ruled routh would remain behind bars while awaiting trial. prosecutors say they'll soon present evidence of an attempted assassination charge to a grand jury. in a statement, the former president saying he does not trust the department of justice and fbi to investigate, writing they have a conflict of interest. an fbi agent says he is not aware of any surveillance video

former president trump has put another small town in the spotlight spotlight when it comes to immigration. this time in pennsylvania. yamiche alcindor is there. >> reporter: another city with a growing haitian population on edge after more inaccurate claims from former premt president trump. >> charleroi has experienced a 2,000% increase in the population of haitian immigrants under kamala harris. the schools are scrambling to hire translators for the influx of students, and the town is virtually bankrupt. >> reporter: here in charleroi, pennsylvania, just like springfield, ohio, local republicans say haitians have been an asset to the community. >> the haitian immigrants have a very good reputation. the problem is the federal government dumped these people in and aren't providing any resources. >> reporter: in recent years,ayears, many came legally to work at the meat processing facility. do you think what former president trump is saying is

true, that haitians are having a negative impact here? >> no, no. when i came here like four years ago, the town was a ghost town. now we've got a group of people that are working and being taxed. >> reporter: he also works as an interpreter for the school system. five years ago, 12 students were learning english as non-native speakers. this year that number is 225. but the superintendent says the state has provided additional funding. >> we are not struggling. are there more things we would like to have? absolutely. but i think any school district would like to say that. >> reporter: misty cassidy disagrees. >> there's so many people and not enough resources. not enough jobs. not enough homes. >> reporter: she's glad trump, who she supports, has been calling attention to charleroi and springfield. >> people need to know that it's just not springfield. this is coming to a town near you. >> reporter: what is coming to a town near you? >> haitians or immigrants that

who opened fire in a king soopers grocery store will spend the rest of his life behind bars. he was found guilty of all 55 charges yesterday, including ten counts of first degree murder for each victim of the assault back in 2021. he was sentenced to ten consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. california is suing exxonmobil, alleging that the company misled consumers into believing recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste. according to the suit, the u.s. plastic recycling rate has never exceeded 9%, and the oil giant is the world's largest producer of the polymer used to make single-use plastics. along with other civil penalties, the lawsuit seeks to make the company put billions of dollars into an abatement fund. in a statement, exxonmobil said advanced recycling, a process that breaks plastic down for potential reuse is effective. it added that the company has kept more than 60 million pounds of plas taketic waste out of thd

ahead for boeing to navigate as it tries to bring the action to a close. it has tabled what it calls its best and final offer to the strikers. they have rejected a tentative agreement. the new offer includes a 30% higher wages. they ratcheted up bonuses and also matching on 401(k) payments. the union has tossed this out without discussion, so still more negotiations ahead, teams. now the justice department may also have visa in its sights. it is looking to sue the credit card giant for allegedly monopolizing the debit card payment. at the heart is a payment processing technology that connects a bank to a merchant when a purchase is made. they are expected to argue that they penalize customers when they try to use another service to process the payments.
