"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances river earra. president biden will deliver one of the last major speeches of his presidency today, addressing the u.n. general assembly here in new york city. white house officials tell nbc news that the president will focus on the climate crisis, the

war in ukraine and another call for a cease-fire in gaza. the speech will also be closely watched for how mr. biden will address the israeli bombing of lebanon. hundreds have died in the most significant military escalation in the middle east in nearly a year. richard engel starts off our coverage this morning. >> reporter: israel is expanding its war in lebanon, and the target is hezbollah. the iranian-backed militia has been carrying out attacks against northern israel in solidarity with hamas after october 7. but hezbollah has tens of thousands of rockets, drones and missiles, and israel has begun to take them out in the hundreds. israel saying many weapons are stored inside homes, warning civilians to evacuate. >> i have a message for the people of lebanon. israel's war is not with you. it's with hezbollah. to defend our people against hezbollah strikes, we must take out those weapons.

>> reporter: lebanon's health ministry said around 500 people were killed by israeli strikes, including children. nbc's matt bradley is there. >> this hospital is already taking in injuries. they've been waiting for this for the better part of a year. now they're expecting hundreds of trauma cases from all over the country. >> reporter: israel is far better prepared. the director of israel's biggest hospital in haifa showed me how every patient is being moved to a fortified hospital underground. you're using it for real, for the first time. >> it's unfortunate. this is not a healing environment. on the other hand, this allows us to continue to give medical care. >> reporter: hezbollah suffered a major blow last week when thousands of its members' pagers and walkie-talkies exploded. israel has hinted at it but not claimed responsibility. nonetheless, the group is still able to fire. a hezbollah rocket hit these homes, causing extensive damage. and now israel is bracing for an escalation, ordering all schools

across northern israel closed and declaring this entire area a no-fly zone. a new front has opened between israel and hezbollah. it may be very difficult to close. richard engel, nbc news, haifa. prosecutors revealed new details about the man accused of plotting to assassinate donald trump as he golfed in florida. in a new filing, authorities allege that 58-year-old ryan routh gave someone a letter months ago which says in part, this was an assassination attempt on donald trump, but i am so sorry i failed you. the fbi says there has not been any handwriting analysis done of this letter. when routh was caught last sunday, a search of his car found two additional license plates, six cell phones and 12 pairs of gloves, along with a list of donald trump's upcoming appearances. routh is currently facing two weapons charges, prosecutors say they will present evidence of an attempted assassination charge to a grand jury.

to hear the conversations that i think we should be having on substance, on issues, on policies. what's your plan? what's my plan? >> our thanks to garrett for that report. turning to alabama, where a manhunt is still under way for the gunman behind a mass shooting that left four dead in birmingham. police say several shooters got out of the car and opened fire on a group outside of a lounge saturday night. investigators are also examining whether it was part of a murder for hire plot. a $100,000 reward is being offered in the case. the boulder, colorado gunman who opened fire as a king soopers grocery store will spend the rest of his life behind bars. he was found guilty of all 55 charges yesterday, including ten counts of first degree murder for each victim of the assault back in 2021. he was sentenced to ten consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. california is suing exxonmobil, alleging that the company misled consumers into believing recycling was a viable

solution for plastic waste. according to the suit, the u.s. recycling rate has never exceeded 9%, and the oil giant is the largest producer of the polymer used to make single-use plastics. along with other civil penalties, the lawsuit seeks to make the company put billions of dollars into an abitatement fun. exxonmobil says in a statement that they are effective and have kept more than 60 million pounds of plastic waste out of landfills this way. now to florida that could be bracing for a hurricane by the end of the week. angie lassman is tracking the new storm gathering strength in the caribbean. >> we're watching this system try to get organized and likely becoming a major hurricane here by the time it does make landfall, and, as you mentioned, florida. here's the details of what we currently know. right now, still potential tropical cyclone nine. moving north west at 6 miles per

murders of their parents in their beverly hills mansion. eric and lyle ultimately admitted to shooting them at point blank range with shotguns. >> i will always protect you. >> reporter: but eric is accusing the show's creators and netflix of quote, ruinous character portrayal. in a letter released by his wife, he condemned the show, saying it is full of blatant lies about him and his brother lyle. it is sad for me to know that netflix' dishonest portrayal of the tragedy surrounding our crime have taken the painful truth several steps backwards, he wrote. >> felt like a joke. it felt like a mockery. >> reporter: some critics on social media also slamming the show's co-creator, ryan murphy for implying the brothers will an intimate relationship. eric menendez saying, quote, how demoralizing is it to know that one man with power can undermine decades of progress in shedding light on childhood trauma. neither murphy nor met flix has responded to nbc's request for

comment. during their highly-publicized trial, prosecutors said eric and lyle were motivated by greed and that the brothers killed their parents because they thought they were going to be disinherited. >> shortly after the killings, lyle menendez began to spend money. a lot of money. >> reporter: but lyle, eric and their defense teams said it was an act of self-defense. >> he said he didn't mean to hurt me. >> reporter: that their father had sexually abused both of them for years, and their mother did nothing to stop it. >> he would guide me, all my movements, and i would, umm, uh, have oral sex with him. >> reporter: after a mistrial, they were convicted of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. their allegations of abuse were largely deemed inadmissible in their second trial.
