speech president biden is set to make at a key time for the u.s. and the world. plus, cracking down on sideshows, kris sanchez breaks down the new ordinance. san francisco leaders are set to vote on and here is a live look for you this morning at walnut creek. we are tracking another day of warm temperatures. meteorologist kari hall monitoring that heat across the bay area and just how long it will last. this is today in the bay good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but let's talk about the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. another hot day. we're starting out. cool but we are going to see those temperatures heating up very quickly for the inland areas. but the heat advisory does not include as much of the bay area as it did yesterday. it mainly now includes cocoa and alameda county, so we are going to see still some hot temperatures there in san jose. when we take a look at what we

are usually seeing for this date and what we're expecting today, we're 11 degrees above normal and in santa rosa, 94 degrees will be our high today, when we're usually in the low 80s. so we are still well above normal. not setting records, but it will be another hot day and we're going to see a lot of that heat in parts of the north bay, east bay and the south bay. so we're going to continue to watch this and a significant cooldown for tomorrow. more on that in a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking activity near the bay bridge. yeah, we had some activity with a crash that had to be cleared at the berkeley curve. looks like everything got to the bay bridge toll plaza, the east parking lot without issue. no slowing on that side of the bay. getting into san francisco. westbound 80. the bay bridge will find some slowing just as you're approaching ninth and fifth. getting down through the central freeway. remember we talked about overnight work that may be there until close to six, but i think it will clear over the next half hour as we're looking in towards san

francisco, with the lane restrictions getting toward the 101 interstate 80 interchange there. meanwhile, the rest of the bay does show a nice easy start, including the altamont pass. no major issues, but your typical slowing coming into livermore clearing. by the time you get to grant line road. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 502 right now. today san francisco supervisors could add some bite to the laws intended to stop sideshows in the city. today, in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom this morning. and, kris, this really could mean that some of those people participating could lose their cars for good. yeah. so that certainly is an escalation. we know that some of the people who organize, drive and show up to watch these sideshows are not new to this scene, but there is a new element that san francisco police and the mayor want to get ahead of. and it's those dirt bikes that we've seen recently. this was the scene about a month ago when about 100 dirt bikers swarmed the city, marking that escalation in the dangerous and destructive sideshow behavior. mayor london breed wants the sfpd to be able to prosecute

them the same as the drivers of cars. more recently, dirt bikes have erupted onto the scene and have created a different challenge for the police department. much in the same vein, but different to some extent because they are far more nimble. both of these events should be described as nothing other than vehicle insurrections. it is lawless. today, the supervisors will consider extending how long they can impound a vehicle and even sell it if the driver or rider is convicted of the charges. now, the ordinance also clearly makes it illegal to organize a sideshow, participate in the sideshow block the roadway, or even private property for the stunts, and it makes it illegal to interfere with police. it also ups the penalty for all of these things to include jail time and fines. these are calle, you know, sideshows for a reason. they have their a show and they have audiences. so to the extent we can also hold

accountable the people who are publicizing these illegal event, that could help out. supervisor dorsey says that the sideshows can be more than just inconvenient for motorists or destructive for people who have businesses nearby. in sacramento, they turn deadly. when two people died at a sideshow. we will follow the supervisors vote today and will also talk more about what the governor is trying to do to help back up these communities that are all dealing with the same issue. marcus. that's a big problem across the bay area. kris. thank you for that. well, president joe biden set to deliver one of the final and possibly one of the most consequential speeches of his presidency today. this is at the united nations general assembly in new york city. here is a live look for you this morning as people start to arrive. so the white house officials familiar with the speech telling nbc news that the president will focus on the climate crisis, ukraine and call for an immediate cease fire in the israel-hamas war. now, of course, this comes as tensions

in the middle east spill over into lebanon. this is where nearly 500 people are dead now as a result of israeli missile strikes aimed at hezbollah targets. the pentagon saying that it's sending a small number of troops to the region, and a few dozen american troops will help americans flee the middle east. today in the bay brie jackson in washington this morning with those developments. israel dramatically expanding its assaults on lebanon monday with airstrikes that killed hundreds and wounded over a thousand more. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu sending this message to the lebanese people. israel's war is not with you. it's with hezbollah. for too long, hezbollah has been using you as human shields. the idf has warned you to get out of harm's way. i urge you, take this warning seriously. the escalation is heightening tensions in the region. iran's

new vice president accuses israel of attempting to draw them into a wider war, something he says he does not want. we want to move in a more peaceful, more stable world. we don't seek war, but we will defend ourselves. u.s. defense officials say israel has not been sharing details about its military movements and fear hopes for a ceasefire in gaza are dwindling. president biden is expected to push for a diplomatic resolution when he addresses the u.n. general assembly today. my team is in constant contact with their counterparts, and we're working to deescalate in a way that allows people to return to their homes safely. the defense department plans to send a few dozen american troops to the middle east in the coming days to help americans flee the region. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. back here in the bay area, the two candidates

vying to fill ana eshoo south bay congressional seat will face off eight days from today in a debate airing right here on nbc bay area. former san jose mayor sam liccardo and state assembly member evan low will appear in a one hour debate originating from our nbc bay area studios. our nightside anchor, raj mathai, will be one of the moderators. the debate will cover a wide range of issues. it happens wednesday, october 2nd at 7 p.m. it will also air on telemundo 48 and all of our streaming platforms. happening today, three suspects accused of using a machete in a violent south bay attack are scheduled to be arraigned. san jose police announced those arrests last week, saying that the attack happened back in june. surveillance video capturing the graphic incident. it shows that victim punched, kicked and stabbed in the parking lot on alum rock avenue. this is near san jose. calvary cemetery. the victim did survive. investigators say that that attack followed a dispute from earlier that same day ahead of the a's final series in oakland.

team owner john fisher has a message for fans. and let's just say most of them not taking it too well. we have a live look at the oakland coliseum, which tonight will host the first of just three more a's games through thursday against texas. next year, the team will play in sacramento. fisher yesterday sent a letter to fans who have supported the team for more than 50 years. it explains his side of why the team is now leaving oakland. our bob redell is following that part of the story. he'll join us with a live report in our next half hour. let's take a peek outside. headed to the south bay this morning. nice live look outside at san jose this morning. nice time of the day if you need to get out and about, because it's cooler in the morning. you need to exercise. waiting for the sun's arrival where things are going to warm up. kari. yeah. so we're looking at a nice, cool start for most areas, but you're probably noticing that it's not as chilly as it was yesterday morning. temperatures are coming down to the upper 60s in some

spots, like hayward. it is now 70. in pleasanton, while fairfield is at 58 degrees. we're seeing mid 50s in much of the north bay from sonoma to santa rosa and 58 in napa. but then as we take a look at walnut creek, another day of the heat advisory, the last day of the heat advisory. so we're going from temperatures in the upper 50s to 89 degrees at noon. and then headed for the upper 90s during the middle of the afternoon, we will see a high of 91 in san jose and 95 in napa, while san francisco up to 81 degrees. so we'll take a look at that cooldown in the forecast coming up. mike, you've been tracking gas prices. how's it looking this morning? well, the bay's best is again, 419. jumping around today. we find it in alameda county where hayward has abe, the name of the phillips station, where you can get your gas at that price on mission boulevard. now, the low for south bay is 429. we'll point to san jose's great gas on tully road this morning. there's a few others at the same price point. and in the north bay,

marin county's best is 439 at the bottom here. that's elite gas and mart on ritter street in san rafael. you can get those prices and those updates gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we'll update you to the traffic flow, which is maintaining a pretty smooth drive on the maps. you see around the bay, green sensors with a lot of easy driving out. altamont pass shows a little bit of slowing, and as we get in towards san francisco, we'll take a look at the maps and we see that traffic is still slow on the central freeway, that overnight project continues there until about 6 a.m. i see that the slowing is getting a little worse. i do believe that's the crews getting cleared from the area. should be clear in the next 20 to 25 minutes, i think. meanwhile, the golden gate bridge, they just had a crew clearing that bridge, heading north toward the marin side. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. the new college rankings are out this morning. ahead on today in the bay. the top spots. local universities are taking wall street hits. yet another record. plus some lovely gifts for new moms. and what about the old ones? the true thing that makes country music

kind of beyonce line of jeans coming. candidate for president donald trump says he'll put a 200% tariff on john deere products if it moves some of its operations from iowa to mexico. deere says it's moving some small assembly lines south to make room for bigger assembly lines in iowa. here's trump that if i win, john deere is going to be paying a 200%. they haven't started it yet. maybe they haven't even made the final decision yet. but i think they have john deere is going to. and anybody else that does this because it's hurting our farmers, it's hurting our manufacturing. and if you do that, you're going to have a 200% tariff put on the product that you make in mexico, right across the now notable as this would violate the new nafta deal that trump himself put in place that allows free trade between the us, mexico and canada. remember, mexico will not pay that tariff. our farmers will. trump will talk about taxes today in georgia. we'll talk more about that coming up in a half an hour chinese time.

china's communist leadership put in a new stimulus spark the economy there. china's economy, its unemployment trouble, youth unemployment as high as 17%. caroline ellison, they're in the hat. will be sentenced for today her role in the crypto coin ftx fraud case. she testified against her former boyfriend, sam bankman-fried. he got 25 years. ellison was the head of alameda research, the trading arm for ftx, and a new trend on tiktok that does not involve eating laundry detergent. women are hiding gift cards and baby products like boxes of diapers, so that new moms can buy themselves something nice. it started with tiktoker dasha gonzalez, who spotted a $20 purse left on a shelf in target at the baby aisle. she figured the mom who left it decided against buying the purse in order to buy diapers, and that's where she created. she deserved the purse. all right, there we go. i was

single day. you can watch the show tonight at 6:00 on doctor phil mcgraw's merritt street media platform. you can find that on directv, dish, samsung tv plus, or on the merritt plus app. who knew? i was just gonna say honestly, never knew about it, but there you go. a lot of stars there. that's cool. you learn a lot here on today in the bay and you're going to learn about today's weather, too. not as warm as yesterday, though, so that's the way to look at it for some spots. cooling trend. right. if it's two degrees, you probably won't feel the difference. but you know, in some of our coastal areas and in san francisco, you are going to notice that it will be slightly cooler, just a little bit more of that sea breeze kicking up, but no fog as we take a look as our a lot of our live cameras right now, as you're getting up and heading out in san francisco, even at the golden gate bridge, it is clear when we take a look at our highs, what we're forecasting today versus the record. we've been talking about how hot it is, but we are

not anywhere close to our record highs. so santa rosa, we're looking at a high today of 94. but thank goodness we are not close to that record of 103 today. and in concord it will be up to 98 not too far off of that 101 record that we had in 2019. in san francisco. it's going to be 81 today. the high the record is 95. and in oakland 86. the record is 93. and we're just about seven degrees below our record high today for san jose. but there will be still some hot spots. morgan hill up to 96 degrees today. we're going to see a high of 95 in walnut creek in hayward today, 88 for that high temperature and nice and mild for half moon bay, 66 degrees. but we're up to 90 today in palo alto and parts of the city are still going to be pretty warm. but look at that range in temperatures from the marina district at 65 to 81. in the mission district, we know how it can change a lot from neighborhood to neighborhood. and then in the north bay, it's

going to be in the mid 90s. today. for the most part, we're looking at some slight cooling of very brief and quick moving cold front will come in tomorrow and then high pressure will rebuild once again. and that's going to warm up our temperatures going into the weekend. so we're going to see highs today in the mid to upper 90s in the inland areas. but 86 tomorrow. so that's a big drop. and then we'll start to see those temperatures climbing up again. going into the weekend it won't be as hot, but we're still looking at some 90s in the valleys while san francisco will also have significant cooling with 60s for the next couple of days. mike, is it still slow on the bay bridge? yeah, and the backups? a little worse because it's tuesday where we get an earlier start to a bigger volum, and we still have that same quit time here for folks. the crew restricting lanes right now on the central freeway overnight project should be in the process of clearing. but before it gets clear, we have more traffic coming in from the oakland side that no backup at the toll plaza itself. it's basically treasure island and on into the city, slowing here for highway 37 and

neighborhood. this is today in the bay good tuesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us at 530. right now i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get you caught up with that forecast today. meteorologist kari hall tracking those conditions. so, kari, you say today a little bit cooler than yesterday, but most of us won't notice. yeah, probably not noticing a 2 degrees drop in your high temperature for today, but we are still under a heat advisory for cocoa and alameda counties this morning, starting at 11:00 and going until 8 p.m. that doesn't mean those are the only areas that are going to be hitting the 90s. it's still going to be hot for this afternoon, doubling in that heat advisory. take a look at the trend for today going from upper 60s at 8:00 to a noontime temperature of 88 and then making it into the low 90s today, but then cooling off this evening. and we're going to see a high of 91 in san jose, 86 in oakland and 95 today in napa. and mike, you're saying the bay

bridge looks pretty packed? yeah, all the way across the span. our view from emeryville shows the packed in lights all the way into san francisco. let's give folks at home a close up look. you can see those tail lights packed in. this is all emanating out of san francisco. overnight work has the central freeway down to just one lane. as you are heading in towards san francisco. let me show you on the maps there, as we're looking at a slower drive coming in toward that area where 101 and interstate 80 meet, they should be picking up over the next few before 6:00 is a scheduled time. i think those sensors might be improving just a little bit on the tail end there. as we look toward the backup coming up the entire incline. no backup at the toll plaza, but those metering lights turn on any second if the backup continues there, slowing for 37 highway 4 pretty typical there for a tuesday. the bigger volume is taking effect. back to you. thanks, mike. the a's tonight begin their final series at the oakland coliseum. that means just three games left for fans to say farewell before the a's move their temporary home to

sacramento next year. today in the bay's bob adele live for us this morning. and bob, the a's owner, breaking his silence delivering that message to fans. but i can imagine this is like a dear john letter. i mean, thank you for saying goodbye, but you're still leaving, right? that's a good way of putting it. good morning to marcus and laura. so the final three games at the oakland coliseum, assuming that the a's do stick to what they are saying, that they are going to be moving to las vegas in 2028, those final three games begin tonight. and you got tomorrow. the final game, of course, being thursday. that's an afternoon game in oakland. this is a live look at the oakland coliseum, which has been home for the a's since 1968. but team owner john fisher has decided to move the to team sacramento for the next three seasons. while a new stadium is being built in las vegas. fisher, who has been reclusive. he issued a rare public statement yesterday. in a letter to fans, he wrote his dream when he bought the team in 2005, was

to win a world championships and build a new ballpark in oakland. quote i know there is great disappointment, even bitterness, though i wish i could speak to each one of you individually. i can tell you this from my heart. we tried staying in oakland was our goal. it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it. and for that, i am genuinely sorry. the letter also included a typo when listing memorable moments. fisher referenced the 1989 loma prieta earthquake during game three of the world series. fisher misspelled panetta. remember i before e, except after c. last week we spoke with jeremy goodrich, a lifelong a's fan who will not be attending thursday's last home game. as a matter of fact, he stopped attending oakland a's games in june of 2023 because he doesn't want to give any more money to john fisher. i've never been so, far apart from watching the a's

watching major league baseball. it's just the whole situation is disheartening. it could have been done so much better, and i just feel bad for all of the other fans. but the big thing out of this is the fans and how important fandom is. and i really hope everyone continues to support other oakland sports, and i hope people stop supporting the a's personally. recently, we learned the oakland a's plan to break ground on their new 33 000 seat stadium at the old site of the tropicana hotel in las vegas next spring. that's when they're saying the groundbreaking is going to be the las vegas review-journal. the newspaper down there reports that the a's are expected to present three final agreements with the las vegas stadium authority next month, with a vote confirming those agreements in december. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay heartache for a lot of fans. a lot of history there. thanks, bob. well, the gun used to shoot 49ers rookie ricky pearsall was

purchased in arizona. this is all according to a new report in the chronicle, which cites an unnamed source in saying that it is a semiautomatic pistol purchased legally seven months ago at a pawn shop in phoenix. it's not clear who purchased the gun or how it was obtained by that juvenile. now charged in the case. pearsall continues to recover from his gunshot wounds. it's not yet clear when he'll return to the field. police are hoping a new suspect sketch can help solve the brutal beating of an elderly man on the peninsula. take a look at your screen. witnesses described the attacker as between 20 and 40 years old, about six feet tall, 180 pounds, with an average build. the attack happened last monday in los altos. here's a photo of the victim. 89 year old john stephan. his daughter tells us he was visiting a homeless friend when the attack happened on the embankment near 280 and foothill expressway. she also tells us he's now out of the hospital. anyone with information is urged to contact

los altos police. in just a few hours, cal fire worker accused of setting fires will be in court. on friday, cal fire arrested 38 year old robert hernandez and apparatus engineer. he's accused of setting small fires in sonoma county over the summer. all of those fires only burned less than an acre of land. hernandez will be in court. that arraignment hearing is happening this morning. you can soon expect strict new rules on cell phones at your child's school. comes after governor gavin newsom signed a new bill. newsom signed the phone free school act yesterday. it will require school districts to develop policies to limit the use of smart phones by july of 2026. however, any policy must allow students to use their phones in the case of an emergency. newsom says this is supposed to help kids focus in the classroom among both parents and students. there's mixed feelings about the changes limited to where it's not too much of a distraction in the class, but just to make sure

that they can still have access to it. i think they're the students are losing touch with the teacher student learning. some bay area school districts are already using a system called yonder. students place their phones in a personally assigned pouch, which remains locked until the end of the school day, but can be used in the event of an emergency. 537 this morning. let's take a live look outside for you this morning. and here we go. walnut creek, good morning and welcome to tuesday. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that forecast for us today. i guess you want to get out and do an outside workout once the sun starts to come up. maybe that's the best time to do it. yes. early in the day, before temperatures heat up, we are already starting out a little bit warmer than yesterday at this time, so in pleasanton it is now 64 degrees. it's 69 in martinez and 58 in napa. and overall it's still a cool morning compared to what we have ahead. our high temperature today in santa rosa will be up to 94 degrees when our normal

high temperature is just 82. so a lot of these temperatures are well above what we typically like to see for this date. with concord high today reaching 98 degrees. san francisco 81. in livermore it's going to be 98 degrees, while san jose will be in the lower 90s. and we'll talk about a cool down ahead. mike, you have a warning about a number of projects. yeah, one of them is the one i warned you about yesterday. the overnight roadwork on the central freeway. lane restrictions backing up the entire bay bridge. this being the heavy volume today, tuesday, we see the backup at the toll plaza as well. so this is having a problem all the way over from san francisco. across the span, you're down to one lane still as you're getting off the central freeway heading toward 101. now, that's one of the overnight projects that continues. we have your typical bill for the morning. so again, we'll focus ahead as we predict what might be an issue for folks as well. this lane restriction here, as well as overnight lane restrictions for the golden gate bridge and the richmond bridge.

looking over here at the bay bridge. look at that steady stream of lights moving very slowly. those tail lights into san francisco from oakland. the backup fills in the toll plaza very early for that. we're looking at lane restriction in san francisco. that central freeway overnight construction still has traffic jamming up off the bridge and into city streets. we'll continue to follow the build. and as we take a look at what to expect in discovery bay, it's going to start out clear 63 degrees as we head toward noon. it is already 90 and we will be touching 100 degrees for this afternoon. lots of sunshine in that forecast and a cool down on the way. more on that coming up in a few minutes. and now let's turn to our climate in crisis. electrifying your drive. when it comes to helping reduce carbon emissions by switching to an ev. many people are deterred by the range

of the charge and limited charging stations, especially for road trips or in more remote areas. have you driven your ev to yosemite lately, or did you just drive your gas vehicle because of the few charging stations? well, now you have a new option on the way to the park with the first charging outpost by rivian located in groveland, about 25 miles outside of you. it's essentially an ev rest stop where you can get some snacks, walk the dog, let the kids play, and car manufacturers are rolling out larger ev batteries to give customers a longer range on the road. so right now there are 227 charging stations within national parks across the u.s, according to the national park service website. but the majority are level one or level two ports, meaning it can take up to ten hours to completely energize a battery. and last month, the biden administration announced $521 million in grants

rosa, 9495 in napa and 98 degrees in concord. while dublin will be in the mid 90s san mateo today in the upper 70s, while san jose will be back into the low 90s and then into the day tomorrow. take a look at how much cooler it's going to be. mostly 60s and 70s. there will be some low 80s for the south county, the inland east to bay the delta, as well as the far north bay, but for most of santa rosa and napa, we're going to see upper 70s there. and then it starts to warm back up again on thursday. so unfortunately, the little break in the high heat will be very short lived. we have that cold front quickly moving through a very weak one for the most part, and then high pressure rebuilds going into the weekend. so that's going to make those temperatures rise once again, more of a northerly wind. and look at the changes in napa going from 77 on wednesday to 87 on thursday and then 93 degrees on friday. thankfully that kind of heat doesn't hold for the weekend, so we will see it

dipping again and eventually some cooler air by the end of next week. so a look at our 7-day forecast shows that we're going from 97 today to 86 tomorrow, and then some upper 80s for some of our hotter spots in the inland valleys. the weekend. not bad, but it will be a little bit better on sunday compared to saturday. and san francisco will see temperatures fairly comfortable after today, dropping back into the upper 60s and lower 70s. mike, are you seeing the bay bridge as our toughest spot still? by far our toughest spot. it is packed. look at this. all the way across the span into san francisco. it pushes back into the toll plaza was filled in. the good thing i see is that these hov lanes are now proving to be an advantage point. that means on the span itself, traffic is starting to move a little bit better. we did see that string of lights steadily packed all across in the city. they're doing that repair work on that median. as you're getting down to that last portion of the central freeway. so we're down to one lane. still, that crew is registered
