bailey forces intercepted a missile. hezbollah fired towards tel aviv. the response from u.s. secretary of state this morning. plus stopping gun violence, the mayor of antioch set to lay out his plan to curb a rash of shootings in one troubled neighborhood. plus, pushing back against a new costco. the reason some south bay residents are upset with the plans to bring yet another store to san jose. this is today in the bay. good
6:01 am
wednesday morning. hump day is here, and so are we. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike halfway through our workweek. and it's up and it's down temperature wise. what are we in store for today? today it's down. this is like, my favorite kind of game show, right. lower, lower. we start to see it going back up. but we are going to see a nice cool day for much of the bay area. and low clouds and fog over san francisco. so this is where we are getting some of that cooling and the mist and drizzle this morning. starting out as you're about to step out the door, grab a jacket, maybe with a hood because it's going to be raining lightly there and we will have a major drop in temperatures all across the bay area. so instead of upper 90s and triple digits today, the valleys will see seconds and 80s, but the warmer weather will return as we head into the weekend. so take a look at your microclimate and what to expect today. really nice weekend for
6:02 am
the most part. turn the air conditioning off. but once again it's coming back on for the weekend. mike now you have a crash in fremont. yeah, we're looking at 880 and a smooth drive, but the volume of traffic is pretty good coming down in toward the tesla plant. this is just south of the crash, so we know traffic is getting by without an issue. it was one lane blocked, i believe, at stevenson for south 880 just for a short period of time. looks like there's some recovery for the speed sensors. just south of 84. that's a dump. the dumbarton bridge or dakota? a smooth drive as we do have that build though. feeding in, out of hayward. nothing dramatic. one call out there, another call out for the south bay 87 showing some early slowing and across the bay bridge there's an eastbound 80 treasure island crash that's coming out of san francisco. but the commute here just at the toll plaza. back to you. wow getting busy out there. thank you very much, mike. it is 602 right now. we begin with breaking news. israel launching a third day of airstrikes in lebanon after its defense forces intercepted a ballistic missile, fired by hezbollah. and we just learned in the last 15 minutes
6:03 am
or so, israel is activating its military reserves in the latest sign of an escalation with hezbollah. this morning, egypt, jordan and iran now warning about the chance that israel is pushing the middle east towards a, quote, whole scale war. today in the bay's brie jackson joins us live in washington, not only with the latest developments, but perhaps how the u.s. is even responding to all this. good morning laura. so those warnings of a full scale war are something that president biden urged must be prevented during his final speech in front of the u.n. general assembly, the militant group says it was targeting mossad's headquarters with a missile launch, but israeli defense forces say there's no evidence of that. lebanese health officials say ramped up attacks by israel killed more than 500 people monday, more than half a million people are now displaced from their homes in lebanon as a result. on the other side, the idf says hezbollah fired more than 300 rockets and missiles
6:04 am
into israeli territory yesterday, injuring six people. now on today, this morning, u.s. secretary of state anthony blinken was asked about israel's strategy of using escalation to force hezbollah to the negotiating table after the horrific events of october 7th by hamas in israel. in the south, hezbollah from lebanon joined in and started firing rockets into israel. people who lived in northern israel had to evacuate their homes. villages were destroyed, homes were destroyed. 70,000 israelis were forced from their homes, and israel started firing back. you had a tit for tat going back and forth. people in southern lebanon had to leave their homes to. and what everyone wants is to have a secure environment in which people can simply return home. kids can go back to school. that's what israel is after. so the best way to get that is not through war, not through escalation. it would be through a diplomatic agreement that has forces pulled back from the border. create a secure environment. people return home.
6:05 am
that's what we're driving towar. and yesterday, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu promised to continue the attacks on hezbollah, saying in part, quote, anyone who has a missile in their living room and a rocket in their garage will not have a home. netanyahu stated earlier this week that he is making good on his promise to change the balance of power in the north by taking out hezbollah missiles. laura, wow, so much going on overnight and even minute by minute with these updates. brie thank you for the latest there. in fact, if you want to see the full interview with secretary of state antony blinken, it's coming ahead on the today show at 7:00. it's right after today in the bay. new at six. antioch's mayor will update efforts to crack down on a recent surge in violence in one specific community. police say since the start of the month, there have been nearly a dozen shootings along sycamore corridor. one of those shootings was fatal, and some of those cases people were injured by
6:06 am
stray bullets. now, most, if not all of those shootings are believed to have ties to gang violence. police will join mayor lamar hernandez thorpe for a news conference later today. now to an emotional plea from a north bay man whose beloved animals were stolen from his home in a theft he says was caught on surveillance video. he says this video shows the thief, a woman using hay to entice three goats to follow her. he says it all happened last tuesday in a barn on his property in santa rosa. the sonoma county sheriff's rural area crimes task force is now investigating, and he has a personal message for the thief. they were my family. they were my family pets. just please bring them home. please bring them home safely. the goats are named atlas, nacho and chili. they are among eight pet goats
6:07 am
he owns. he's hoping someone who visits his goats instagram page called rancho disco can help solve the mystery. in san jose, city planners are expected to debate approving plans for a new costco later today. but there's growing pushback from residents in one neighborhood. today, in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from san jose at the saratoga border. this is at the proposed location store right? kris. well hi there marcus. you can see some of the buildings here of the proposed location behind me. they are boarded up, all quiet now. but what you can see is how busy this plaza is already. not just here, but across the street. lots of different locations for businesses in this location already. i want to show you the map. in case you're not familiar with this area. we are on the corner of what is san jose and saratoga right there on the border. it's a 5000 block of prospect road near the westgate shopping center, which again is right on the border of san jose
6:08 am
and saratoga. there are already several other large retail buildings at this location, and if approved, these buildings would be demolished to make way for a 165,000 square foot store. the first with rooftop parking and there are several parties already pushing back. first, there's the save west valley, a group of neighbors who say that this store is just too big for this location. there's also the prospect high school community, which says that more traffic would mean more danger for their students. it's just catty corner here and city of saratoga. they want to say, because this location is along the border. now, costco has changed the development plans for this location, including proposed improvements for crosswalks and traffic flow, as well. but it appears that the planning commission is likely to move forward, as this has been in the works for almost four years now. the planning commission is going to talk about this at 630 tonight. if it goes forward and the environmental impact review
6:09 am
is approved, then the full council will discuss it on october 22nd. we figure a lot of people will have things to say between now and then. marcus. that is for sure. kris for us this morning. thank you. chris. it is 608 right now and so far it seems like the a's are trying to squeeze in a few last minute memories before closing the door on oakland forever. you saw their final home stand there playing their final series at the place they've called home since 1968. and for one night, anyway, they conjured up some memories of championships past coming home and the oakland a's have won the ball game. i guess if you're going to go out, go out big. the a's last night beat the rangers on a walk off base hit. thrilling. that coliseum crowd. but that now means that we're just two days games left at the coliseum before the a's pack their bags for sacramento. our ginger conejero saab following the emotional roller coaster of events for fans. we'll have a live report coming up in our next half hour. all
6:10 am
right, well, switching things over across the bay over into san francisco. a foggy day. is it a sad day because the oakland a's are leaving carey? i don't know. the clouds are crying as we take a look at the city this morning. we are seeing those low clouds, some mist and drizzle, and it's in the upper 50s. as you get started and head out the door. we are in the low 60s in oakland and it's 60 in pleasanton. nice, cool start to the morning. you're going to see more clouds. and in napa we'll see those clouds through about 9 to 10:00 and still partly cloudy at 11:00, but then sunny the rest of the day. the cooler weather settling in for a little while. highs here only in the low 70s for the south bay. it will be in the upper 70s low 80s. this is such a big change from yesterday when it was really hot during the afternoon. in fact, parts of the warmer spots in the inland east bay will only be in the low 80s for this afternoon. we'll talk about more changes ahead coming up. mike, you've been watching gas prices going up or down, holding
6:11 am
steady for our best at least it kind of moves around where it is though. so we'll start in contra costa county for the best price, which stays at 419 today. we call it valadao in concord on willow pass road. at the top of the screen here. then we're going to call out cupertino for the south bay low. that's 429 aria gas and market on stevens creek boulevard. the last number is the lowest on the peninsula, where they tend to have higher prices. in san mateo county, this is arco on delaware street in the city of san mateo. you can get the latest updates as they change gasbuddy.com on the roadways. not a whole significant amount of change just to continue to build for the traffic flow. i did want to talk about a traffic break. we heard maybe being run on that lower deck out of the san francisco area. across the bay bridge, there's a crash around treasure island. no injuries and we don't see slowing on the sensors. just a note, there may be something going on for the bridge crew. counter to the commute westbound. your typical commute shows typical pattern throughout contra costa county and across the bridges back to you. all right. thanks, mike.
6:12 am
611 right now stranded in the north bay. coming up next on today in the bay, the helicopter rescue video you have to see to believe after six people got stuck in a creek and the end of an era kmart with its last blue light special out to the futures. this morning. are we going to have red or green? a little money coming off the table after yet more stock market records. plus, if the world was ending, i'd want to be next to you, lady gaga with the poker face before her big announcement, which complements her upcoming movie. we'll tell you about that one two punch that fans are truly excited about. keep it right here. you're watching today in the bay and dive with a smile
6:14 am
the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery.
6:15 am
san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. dublin and what to expect. today it's going to be partly cloudy through about 9:00 and temperatures in the low 60s. as we go into the afternoon, we're headed for the mid 70s. overall, a much more comfortable day and we get a nice cooldown that's only temporary, so we'll talk about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. as we look at the san mateo bridge, right side is your commute direction. westbound across 92 up the high rise. a smooth flow of traffic,
6:16 am
but there is more traffic to be expected. we'll see how this reflects on those speed sensors coming up. well, good morning. very good wednesday to you. more records on wall street. the s&p 500 hit a new all time high for the 41st time this year. 41 times futures. you saw calling for a lower opening this morning. money coming off the table perhaps. san francisco's crowdstrike faced hard questions in washington on tuesday. i'll get to that in a second. visa. also, bay area based getting ready to defend itself in court after the u.s. government accused it of being a monopoly. here's the attorney general. it is unlawfully blocking competition. it is depriving american banks, merchants and consumers of lower costs and product and innovation. it is charging a hidden toll on each of trillions of transactions, adding up to billions of dollars

of fees imposed annually on american consumers and businesses. visa says the justice department is forgetting about all the other ways that consumers can pain points out that those options to pay are growing. paypal venmo and the like can come right out of your bank account directly. here's that crowdstrike hearing i was telling you about. the company apologized on capitol hill for that massive worldwide outage back in july. one congressman called it like something out of a movie. well, from the last size, the last full size kmart in mainland america is shutting down. it's in long island. it will shut down next month. meantime, bloomberg reporting that artificial intelligence company openai has talked to the white house about building a data center so big it will use five gigawatts of energy. how big is that? that's as much as a large american city uses. the report says talks are still in the preliminary stage, and it would be very difficult to find
6:18 am
a spot in the u.s. where you could put a data center that uses as much power as the city of miami does without having to build a huge number of new power plants. but this is going to be an issue. so five gigawatts, gigawatts, is one server farm. the entire production of nuclear power in america is about 90 mw. so yeah, it's a huge percentage. exactly all right. thanks, scott. you bet. put your feet out. put your feet out. you're going to land on the ground. can you imagine being a part of this rescue? new video shows a water rescue that happened in the north bay. six people got stranded in putah creek yesterday afternoon. winters, vacaville and san ramon. firefighters tried to get to them, but because of the location, they weren't able to reach them by foot. that's when first responders called in. the

helicopter team. one by one, a rescuer rappelled from the helicopter, pulling each person to safety. luckily, they were all okay. 618 right now. trending. this morning, we're about to get some new music from lady gaga and that means the little monsters everywhere have reason to celebrate. they're saying you're a bad influence on me. well, guess what? that's life. that's life. funny as it seems. superstar revealing that her new album, harley quinn drops on friday, it's named after the role that she's playing there in the joker movie folie a deux, and the movie is expected to premiere next week. now, the album is set to feature covers like that's life, which you just heard get happy and smile. and ahead of joker, folie a deux premiere next week, some of those fans in los angeles were given two big surprises last week. lady gaga herself
6:20 am
treated them to an in-person experience while handing out popcorn to those in the audience. gaga plays harley quinn, a mental hospital patient who falls in love with the joker. the movie officially hits theaters a week from friday. wow. she has so many different looks. yeah. and never one project. she always has to have two or. no. no kidding. all right. he's a busy guy with the talent. okay, we've been watching the temperatures lately. will carey really has for us. yes, it's just been feeling. they've been moving. right. you'll have to watch every single day because it's going to be so different from one day to the next. yesterday it was hot, and we were seeing temperatures in the upper 90s, even triple digits. well now the clouds are rolling in and it's going to be a much cooler day as our high temperatures will actually be cooler than what we typically see for this date. so in santa rosa, it will be 77. normally we're up to about 82, and in concord 79 degrees. that's a high temperature in san
6:21 am
francisco will be in the upper 60s. livermore and san jose, looking at a high today of about 80 degrees. so as we take a look at our microclimates, a lot of these numbers are going to be at least ten, maybe even 15 degrees lower than it was yesterday. and it's going to be a nice little break from that high heat tomorrow. the temperatures start to climb up again. so instead of seeing some upper 70s, dublin will be in the mid 80s. concord 88 degrees and mid to upper 80s for much of the north bay. we're starting to see those low 90s with mid to upper 90s in the forecast on friday. so we are going to be back to the heat in time for the weekend as high pressure rolls right back in, there will be several storm systems passing to our north with some cooler air, and it's not until about early next week when we start to see some breaks in that high heat after monday and tuesday. so take a look at what's ahead for walnut creek. going from 70s today to mid 80s tomorrow. then mid 90s on friday. the good thing is that
6:22 am
it won't be that hot this weekend, but we will see the heat coming back early next week. this is the time of year where it can be so different from one day to the next. as we see the sea breeze bringing in some cooling relief for the inland valleys, and then at times that weekend. so our temperatures in the inland areas will be heating up. so we're looking at san francisco's high. that won't be as much of a change will be in the upper seconds today then mid 70s for the weekend. mike you're tracking that building commute. yeah. no real surprises here as we look at the berkeley curve, which is actually in emeryville in oakland and not in berkeley, but comes out of berkeley. it's a smooth drive. you see the volume of traffic merging together approaching the bay bridge. that's why things continue to slow down the east shore freeway. that volume builds and a smooth drive, but still slower up the incline. there was an earlier traffic break. i think they may be done, but a little slowing out of san francisco for eastbound 80. getting onto that lower deck. keep that in mind. and look at this build here. 242 the entire stretch is slow now coming off
6:23 am
of highway four, pushing down more traffic to walnut creek and toward moraga, lafayette and the caldecott tunnel, which is fine right now. a typical build for the tri-valley and the rest of the east bay. no surprises. that crash in fremont has cleared from a side of a stevenson, and is now 34 minutes for the vasco drive out of contra costa county. back to you. thank you. mike. well, you could own a piece of political history. up next, the items owned by the late senator dianne feinstein going up for auction. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay

senator dianne feinstein. and if you've got some money to spend, you can even take something home with you. it is a new collection called legacy of a stateswoman that will be going up for auction next month. but right now it is all on display at bonhams in san francisco through tomorrow, all of it owned by feinstein and her late husband, richard blum. it's not all art and jewelry. it also includes political memorabilia like a photo of the senator at the white house with a personalized note from president biden. there are also presidential signing pens, including one used by president clinton to sign emergency aid for california following the northridge quake in 1994. the auctioneer says proceeds will go to feinstein's estate. senator feinstein and her late husband, richard blum,

valleys, instead of seeing upper 90s and highs over 100 degrees today, we're talking 70s and 80s. it will be warmer by the weekend. a lot of changes ahead, but we're going to enjoy today this midweek. cool down with highs mostly in the 60s and 70s. we'll talk about the return of summer coming up in a few minutes. all right. sounds good. we'll check with you. 631 right now. new overnight. a tense and deadly situation unfolding on board a bus in southern california. here's what we know. a gunman shot and killed a passenger on board that bus overnight. police just held a news conference and now say the shooting led to a hijacking and chase. officers used spike strips to stop the bus in downtown la, but that led to a standoff. and after about an hour, the suspect eventually surrendered and is now in custody. a source there says there were three people on board the bus, including the driver, who was uninjured. if we get more details, of course we'll bring them to you. and happening today, the man investigators say shot and killed a coworker last

6:34 am
gasoline that you pay at your local gas station separately. you might recall that recently, the governor proposed proposed that oil refiners keep minimal levels of oil in reserve to prevent price spikes. but republican opponents say requiring those extra oil tanks would increase gas prices in california and other states, and that would lead to shortages. but newsom's office has been disputing those claims. it says that they're looking to have backups to have to avoid shortages, and that there are already enough storage tanks to meet those goals. the governor also just signed off on 24 laws aimed at gun control that his office says will add stronger protections against gun violence. the new laws will create stricter penalties for registered owners of guns used in crimes. strengthened red flag laws also known as a gun violence restraining order. this removes guns from people who pose a serious threat to themselves or others, and provide stricter limits on gun access. the governor also signed three bills to cut red tape on
6:35 am
farmworker housing. the first will study whether california should keep temporary housing complexes open year round, creating stability for families. another bill streamlines the approval process to build more farmworker housing in santa clara and santa cruz counties. farm workers will also now be able to use sick leave to avoid smoke, heat or flooding conditions. also, sb 1061, signed into law, prohibits medical debt from being reported on credit reports. ab 2017 prohibits certain banks and credit unions from charging non-sufficient fund fees, and sb 1075 limits the amount credit unions can charge for overdraft fees. reporting live here in dublin bob redell today in the bay. all right. like to handle that? thank you bob. 635 for you, this morning and the a's era in oakland coming to an end with just two games left at the coliseum. and as the painful goodbye continues, many fans are feeling like a part of the bay area culture being ripped away today in the bay's ginger

dolich, former a's executive from the 80s and the early 90s. that said, glory days of a's baseball when the a's were winning and when they led the league in attendance. now fans were on their feet last night, 30,000 of them, along with an elephant that stomper was giving out hugs to fans that came out to make more memories before the final home series ends. and after last night's dramatic win, we've got one more final night game at home that happens tonight, then another game tomorrow afternoon that will close out this homestand. the a's are on the road after that in seattle, but you can expect many, many more fans closing out their history with the a's 57 years worth of history as the next days continue in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. but, you know, i think of the oakland a's. it was more than just baseball. it was also fashion. i remember

wearing the jerseys and the jackets and stuff that gold all white. and of course green. just can't miss it, man. all right. there it goes. all right. you know how to represent marcus? no, i got a little jersey, too. so you know. all right. thanks so much, ginger. 638 right now. now to a live look. this is in tampa, florida, where governor ron desantis is expected to give a press conference very soon. up and down the gulf coast, people that live there are on hurricane watch in some areas. local leaders have already declared a state of emergency ahead of the arrival of what is now tropical storm helene. the storm is expected to reach hurricane strength as it moves through the gulf later today. perhaps becoming a category four by the time it makes landfall along the gulf coast. you can see how people are preparing there. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking helene, so what can you tell us? earlier, you were talking about the warm water in that area. yeah. it's hard for
6:40 am
us to imagine because our ocean temperatures are always very cool. but in the gulf of mexico, the water temperatures are in the upper seconds. so this is going to give a lot of fuel to this hurricane or what will become a hurricane as it moves into the gulf. so what we're seeing right now, this storm is still a tropical storm just below that hurricane strength. it has been strengthening as it moves to the north at about nine miles per hour. and we can see the rapid intensification that we're expecting before it makes landfall tomorrow evening or possibly into early friday, depending on the speed of that storm. and it could bring wind speeds of 50 to 120mph for parts of the florida panhandle. and that could also bring about 2 to 4ft or 2 to 9ft storm surge. so as it continues to move right now, heavy rain over havana, cuba, and then strengthening before it moves into the florida gulf coast as a category 3 or 4 storm surge. really high. but what we are seeing now as we
6:41 am
make it past the peak of hurricane season, we are still dealing with a lot of activity out there, and the climate impact is rapid. intensification is what we expect in a warmer climate. wind speed increases at least 35mph and 24 hours, and 79% of major tropical cyclones rapidly intensify, and that is projected to happen more frequently in a warmer world. so we'll continue to watch that. that means less prep time for people in the way. we'll see how florida fares with this. now, mike, you are tracking a new crash on the peninsula. we may actually be seeing some of the impact from the crash reports southbound 101 right here just south of willow. so that would make sense. right on the map here we see some flashing lights. one cruiser is on scene. two more are arriving and 3 or 4 vehicles involved people outside of their vehicles. according to the chp report. so southbound 101 will start to build. you see it as folks head down toward right here, the dumbarton bridge. if you know those exits, you know the area. there's more traffic feeding in from the san

mateo bridge, which might be heading south into the area. so keep that in mind. meanwhile, in the east bay, we're going to look ahead to tonight where we do have this night game, as ginger has been talking about tomorrow, the final game at the stadium there with the midday game. so keep that in mind. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. we have overnight work on the richmond bridge and the bay bridge back to you. thanks, mike. americans reaching a tipping point. up next, consumers say tipping has gotten out of hand in a new survey. agrees. so what does it mean for those who rely on that extra cash? also, better protecting our candidates for decision 2024 and beyond and stick around because we're going to introduce you to a local therapy dog in the running of becoming a hero. you want to know why? well, you got to stick around for that. we'll

a new report on what's gone wrong. that's right. particularly in pennsylvania. good morning. in july. a gunman, as you well know, came within inches of shooting donald trump. a new preliminary report out this morning from a senate committee investigating that shooting found a number of mistakes by the secret service. the biggest of which we already knew. the building the gunman used so close to. secured. we ao

learned they were frantically drawing their guns. the secret service did not pull trump from the stage. there were also problems with radio communication and even confusion about who was in charge. the senate yesterday passed a bill that would require the secret service to give presidential nominees the same level of protection as the sitting president. the house passed that same measure, 405 to 0. house also ready to vote on that. continuing resolution that will keep the government open and funded. the bill also has new money for the secret service. it does not contain new election id laws. the freedom caucus, the far right of the republican party, had wanted. the other would be assassin, allegedly the one that was chased from trump's florida golf course, has been charged with attempted assassination. police say rhyne ruth wrote a note admitting he

was trying to kill trump. up until now, he had only been charged with weapons violations. the trump campaign says it was briefed by american intelligence of iranian plans to assassinate him. trump tweeted a few minutes ago, quote, i am surrounded by more men, guns and weapons than i have ever seen. trump in georgia tuesday. he talked about tariffs, fees that americans will pay on foreign imported goods. you know, for years they knocked the word. the word tariff, properly used, is a beautiful word. one of the most beautiful words i've ever heard. it's music to my ears. a lot of bad people didn't like that word, but now they're finding out i was right. yeah, i'm not a fan of tariffs. they raised the prices for american consumers. i'm more of a free trade, kind of a republican that remembers how many jobs are created by the exports that we engage in. so i'm not a tariff fan. mitch

mcconnell, speaking to reporters at the capitol. vice president harris will be in pittsburgh today. she, too, will talk about business and industry, trying to reassure the business world. she's far more centrist than the way that trump talks about her. yesterday harris said once again, she favored ending the senate filibuster rule to pass laws to protect abortion. west virginia democrat joe manchin said he would not be able to endorse her because of that. a republican candidate for senate, meantime, caused a stir after he told supporters in ohio he was confused why abortion was such an issue for women. quote especially for women that are past 50, i'm thinking to myself, i don't think that's an issue for you. former republican candidate for president, nikki haley, took that quote and went on twitter to ask the candidate, quote, are you trying to lose the election? marcus interesting. all right. thanks, scott. 648 for you right now. i'm sure this is a story that many of you have been talking

about. this is new at six new signs, americans frustrations are at a tipping point. this is when it comes to tipping. so there's a new survey out from popmenu. it says that 60% of the people out there are fed up with being asked to tip for various services, not traditionally under the tipping umbrella. about the same amount admit that they do feel pressure to also do so, and nearly one third say that they're now tipping closer to 10% rather than 20%, even when tips are customary. experts believe that some of that pushback is tied to inflation fatigue. that tells me that inflation has really worn us down over the past few years. it tells me that we were extra generous during the covid years, and we're settling on a new normal. now, that same survey finds also that 61% would rather pay higher prices on the menu than compensate and pay for workers wages. and you can check out that full story, including how social media is reacting to the tipping frenzy that's on the

today show. coming up at 7:00, right after us here on today in the bay the race for president isn't the only national election facing voters. here's another one. okay. come on. you want some more? this one is for top dog. this nine year old rhodesian ridgeback from dublin is in the running. dayo is one of five therapy dogs competing nationwide for the american humane hero dog award, which recognizes canines who go above and beyond in the care of people. rodeo started as a companion dog in oregon for, believe it or not, a cheetah. yeah, you see it there? cheetah named pancake. but now he provides love and support for children. these are images of dayo helping some of the young patients at george mark children's house in san leandro, who need around the clock care. we caught up with liz stuart, who volunteers at valley humane in pleasanton and is dayo's trainer, owner and of course, best friend. i think it's my calling. i think i was meant to
6:51 am
do this, because i have a connection with the dogs that i have, and i know that they love to visit with the kids and adults in all these facilities. i, i just love the connection that he makes with everyone that we meet. yeah. isn't that amazing? dayo up against therapy dog from virginia. one from new jersey and two from florida. but you can vote for dayo by logging on to hero dog awards. dot org. what a great dog! i feel weird saying go dayo! beat those other therapy dogs. yeah right. they're all doing good work, but we're cheering for the california. yeah, absolutely. all right. well, california weather for us today. kind of nice in microclimates in full effect too. we are going to see a lot of changes from day to day. and as of right now we're starting out cool and cloudy and only headed for the upper 70s and low 80s. this is going to be so much more of a big change
6:52 am
compared to the high heat that we had yesterday, and many spots about ten to possibly 15 degrees cooler than it was yesterday afternoon, and it's going to be in the low 70s for a high in oakland, 80 in danville, as well as 80 in livermore and near the coast. we're feeling much more of the same with some mid 60s. while redwood city will see a high of 76 degrees in san francisco. also much cooler with some mid to upper 60s and for the north bay. look for a high of 77 in santa rosa as well as napa, and then looking ahead for san jose. we're going from upper 70s to today still comfortable tomorrow with some low 80s. but then look at friday, 93 degrees. and the good news is that that doesn't last all throughout the weekend. we'll catch a bit of a break. we'll head back to some more seasonable weather before those temperatures spike again early next week. so this is that fight back and forth between the sea breeze and the shift in the wind direction to high pressure that really heats up those temperatures. and we're going to
6:53 am
see it going back and forth over the next several days with our inland highs anywhere from upper 80s tomorrow to low 90s on friday. and then the weekend will be in the mid to upper 80s while san francisco. much cooler today, a high of 68 degrees. now mike palo alto is jamming up because of this crash. south 101 just about willow between willow and marsh. you see the flashing lights. more flashing lights arrived, more distraction and more slowing. we see it in the northbound direction coming up from university where our camera is on the map. you see, it's not too much of a big build, but it is starting to stretch out. southbound. approaching the area. no injuries reported, but there are possibly four vehicles that have to be cleared from that slow lane. so that's the big slowing on the peninsula. everything else pretty standard pattern. back to you. thanks so much, mike. it is 653. happening now. san jose's regional medical center, one step closer to new ownership. santa clara county is finalizing its purchase from the current owner, hca healthcare. supervisors voted yesterday to

shootings are believed to have gang relations. today in san jose, planners are expected to debate approving plans for new costco. it would be on prospect road near the saratoga city line, but there is growing pushback from people who live nearby who are raising concerns over traffic and the close proximity to a nearby high school. planners will review and perhaps certify the environmental impact report coming home and the oakland a's have won the ball game. the a's finishing their first game of the last series at the oakland coliseum with a walk off win. they took the game five four over the rangers. an estimated 30,000 fans were in attendance. there are only two more games remaining as a's baseball here in the bay area won tonight, and the final one tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow sold out. all right. let's see what the weather is holding for today. yeah. it's going to be cooler today. all across the bay area instead of upper 90s. it will be

in the low 80s for many spots. and then tomorrow it will gradually start to warm up with a warmer weekend ahead and a snag on the peninsula south 101. the arrow points to this crash, blocking at least one lane for vehicles might be needing to get clear. we have three chp crews on scene, though they're slowing today show just moments away. but for more local news, stay with today in the bay. we stream on roku, pluto and other platforms live at 8:00. shining a light on the shortage of latino physicians. the event, taking place in the south bay today to help address that shortfall. all right. well, that's what's happening here on today in the bay. stick around because today show starts next. you can always turn to nbcbayarea.com for the l a major storm gaining strength overnight. >> and threa good wednesday morning. a major storm gaining strength overnight. >> and threatening millions on the gulf coast. it is september 25th. this is "today." potentially catastroic
