in the city of santa maria, it appears that an improvised explosive device was set off. >> let's get to tom winter with us on set. tom, this is all developing right now. >> that's right, kate. parentally there was some sort of explosion at the courthouse. not exactly clear yet. two people have been hurt. nonlife-threatening injuries. according to the sheriff's office. the big question now is, was this individual trying to target a specific courtroom, a judge, a legal proceeding going on, or was this more about making a political statement? this all happened before 11:00 a.m. pacific time.

it's now a five-black perimeter around that courthouse. you'll search the vehicle to determine whether or not there were weapons or additional explosives inside the suspect's vehicle. this will continue to unfold. >> tom, can you help us understand what kind of security is typical at a courthouse like this. >> just last week, we saw a judge shot and killed in his chambers in kentucky. >> that was by a local sheriff, that's a person who has a lawful reason to bring a firearm. here, did it take place at a specific check point? now, once you go to the state level it varies courthouse to courthouse, some allow you to get in, have access to public records, other courthouses say, look, before you even can get in

and use the bathroom you got to use a metal detector and be searched. >> all right tom winter, thank you. also this hour, we're tracking helene, now a full-fledged hurricane. >> it's barrelling toward florida's gulf coast after it strengthened into a category 1 storm, helene expected to make landfall in big bend region. >> millions of people are preparing as florida governor ron desantis declared a state of emergency for nearly the entire states, dozens of school districts and universities have already cancelled classes. some people are being told they could lose power for up to a week. the impacts from the storm could reach all the way up to the state of tennessee. jesse kirsch is tracking the latest from florida. but we'll start with bill karins, what's the national hurricane center saying about the strength of this storm? >> they're saying it's category

1 with potential to get to maybe a strong 3, low end category 4, that's scary stuff from wherever this heads inland. life-threatening wind. the storm itself is exiting the yucatan, it weakened -- i should say, it stopped intensifying near the yucatan, the land interaction, the dry earth, this blue area here, once it gets over the gulf fully, over very warm water, it will rapidly intensify later on tonight. by tomorrow at this time we should be talking about a storm approaching the big bend area of florida, excellent agreement that it's heading just south of tallahassee, a big storm and it's going to be moving incredibly fast, it will be strong winds far north as far as atlanta, widespread power outages. computer models, agreement.

cedar key to tallahassee area is the area of the greatest concern. storm surge numbers have been raised. this little bend here, 12 to 18 feet. not a lot of population centers in here, but for the few that are there, you have to be out. then, the flash flood threat is really strong, high risk, mountains in north carolina, south carolina and georgia, life-threatening conditions starting tonight and lasting for another two days. >> bill, everybody has to get out of cedar key, that doesn't include reporters unfortunately, that's exactly where jesse kirsch is, that area is still rebuilding from hurricane debby and so how are they getting ready for this. >> reporter: by the way, kate, we'll be out of here before landfall, they're boarding up

these buildings, we've seen this up and down this block. perspective on what the water -- remember, hurricane debby happened over the summer, that brought storm surge around 6 feet to cedar key, we could see more than double that after this. here's what one person told me about the storm surge from debby, the storm surge brought the water level around here, okay, we're talking about storm surge from this storm, from hurricane helene to bring the water level above my head, how much water that's going to be here. you got to get out. >> really important information. thank you both. new information today about the assassination attempts on former president trump. >> a bipartisan senate report out today is highlighting a series of secret service failures leading up to the first attempt on donald trump's life

in pennsylvania. breakdown in communications between officials and trump team. the report found that those people responsible for planning the event, quote, deflected blame. >> as ryan routh allegedly lurking near the president's golf course has been formally charged. routh hasn't yet enter a plea, he could face life if prison if convicted. ken dilanian has been tracking all of this. ken, some pretty dramatic revelations in this report, what else did we learn? >> reporter: kate, perhaps the most striking finding is no one was really in charge of security of the butler event. agents and officials interviewed pointed fingers, deflected blame and didn't acknowledge how badly they mishandled this. big picture the secret service

didn't communicate to local law enforcement they needed to secure that roof that the sniper used to fire. because of a series of astonishing communication failures the secret service agents protecting trump didn't learn key information about the threat as local police discovered it. it said the secret service was notified about an individual on the roof, at least one agent was, two minutes before the shooter opened fire, but that information was not -- was not relayed to the team protecting trump. the secret service had counterdrone technology that might have spotted him flying the drone. a cascade of failures. >> illuminating report there. ken, another threat to the former president, specifically potentially coming from iran,

what exactly do we know about that and what are we hearing from iranian leadership. >> just to be clear even though trump said iran might be behind the two assassination attempts there's no evidence of that. but there's evidence of a plot by iran to kill donald trump and he was briefed on it by the director of national intelligence and our andrea mitchell interviewed a senior iranian official. take a listen. >> numerous american officials from the previous administration and this administration, military as well as diplomatic, who were under 24-hour guard because of they say threats of assassination from iran through their third parties. >> we do not assassinate people, the fact of the matter they assassinated an iranian general. actions have consequences. we haven't taken action against him, we'll pursue legal action against him. >> reporter: actions have

one man is dead and a suspect in custody after a los angeles metro bus was hijacked overnight. >> this all unfolded after midnight, police say the suspect is accused of taking the wheel from the bus driver and holding him hostage. on a pursuit through downtown l.a. steve patterson has been tracking this story for us. what are we learning about this entire situation and the passenger who was killed. >> reporter: shortly before a 1:00 a.m. last night, overnight, the heart of downtown los angeles, this bus is essentially taken over by an armed suspect, arguing with passengers, arguing with the driver, pulls out a gun and starts shooting one of the victims multiple times, police say, this leads to people scattering off the bus, the bus is hijacked. leads to the slow-speed chase you're seeing now. but police are crediting the driver who keep in mind if you're watching video and the bus is moving that means the driver is being held at gun

point but had the sense of mind to hit the panic button. you might see call 9111, emergency, displayed on the bus, that's because of the sense of mind of the driver who does this while being held at gunpoint. this leads to police trailing the bus, it leads to spike strips being deployed. swath teams surrounding the bus. without further injury. police performed cpr on the person who was shot multiple times, but died later at the hospital. the shooter was taken into the custody without further incidents. all thanks to the peace of mind of the driver who did all of this under duress. guys, back to you. >> an unbelievable story.

so glad he had that presence of mind. a toxic threat in ohio, after a dangerous chemical leak forced hundreds of people to evacuate, officials said a rail car's pressure valve began leaking yesterday, prompting fears of an explosion. the incident happened in the white water township, about 222 miles west of cincinnati. joining us now is maggie vespa, way were officials so concerned that this leak could cause an explosion and what's the status right now for people who live near there. >> reporter: we'll start with the explosion, this tank obviously now has been compromised, they say it can rise in pressure, this chemical very easily explodes. this is video of yesterday when it was spewing the chemical into

the area, toxic chemical under prolonged exposure, prolonged exposure could cause cancer. people in the area attended, residents showed up at a press conference earlier today, to let officials know they appreciate the frequent updates but they're obviously very scared. >> the residents are feel displaced, scared, they have nowhere to go. it's not fine. >> reporter: an evacuation order in place since yesterday afternoon for a half-mile radius around that site. officials say testing in that area appears to be safe. as you can see, tensions rising along with that danger factor. >> there are houses not too far from there.

making memories at the coliseum as the a's continue their final home stand last night, adding another magical moment coming home and the oakland a's have won the ball game. and what a dramatic way to win the game. a walk off win for the oakland a's last night as they take the game 5 to 4 over the rangers. cob wilson providing the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth. an estimated over 30,000 people in attendance, many of those hearts cheering and breaking at the same time. what the oakland coliseum represented to me and many, many millions of people is the last town square. people could get together, maybe have their differences with different logos, but at the end of the game, high five fist bump, enjoy themselves and be back for the next game that's gone. thursday is going to be a gut punch for so many people. i was lucky

enough to see crazy george create the wave, and now people will tearfully be waving goodbye. and that was andy dolich, former a's executive from the early 90s as well as the 1980s. they said glory days of a's baseball, when the a's were winning and when they led the league in attendance, fans were on their feet. last night, 30,000 of them, along with an elephant stomper giving out hugs to fans who came out to make more memories before the final home series ends. now, after yesterday, there will be another night game tonight. that will be the final night game here at home. an afternoon game tomorrow. so two games left in oakland before the a's eventually move out of the bay area they'll go to sacramento first before landing in las vegas. at least those are the plans for now. in san francisco. ginger conejero saab nbc bay area news. wow. so heartbreaking to see the a's go. in other news, antioch is making an

effort to clean up a neighborhood that's had a surge in shootings. this month. there have been nearly a dozen shootings along the sycamore corridor since the start of this month. one of the shootings was deadly. others have been hurt by stray bullets. police say most of these cases have ties to gang violence triggered by a homicide on labor day. today, the mayor and police department said there hasn't been a shooting in three days since upping patrols in this area. police are still looking for suspects. we are going to find you. we're going to hold you accountable, and you will pay the price for what you've done and the day you find yourself in court, i will be right there in your sentencing hearing to ensure they lock you up and put you away for a long time. the mayor revealed more plans to beef up police presence and make more long term improvements to that neighborhood. we are in for a cool day across the bay area. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast as we take a look at our wednesday high temperatures. it's going to be much lower. in fact, when we

soon double as emergency shelters, temporary hospitals and other venues needed during disasters. officials saying the new initiative will better prepare local officials for emergencies. venues in pittsburgh, tampa, seattle and new jersey have signed on so far. thailand has passed a landmark bill to legalize same-sex marriage, the new bill grants married couples medical rights regardless of gender. thailand the first country in southeast asia to legalize same-sex marriage. the only other places where it's legal are nepal and taiwan. and johnny cash has become the first professional musician to be honored with a statue in the u.s. capitol, unveiled yesterday was donated by his home state of arkansas. each state chooses up to two statues to represent them in the u.s. capitol. johnny cash is depicted holding a bill with guitar flung over

his back. house speaker johnson said the singer, embodied the musical spirit that few could. israel's military is preparing for a possible land invasion of lebanon. the israeli military launched another barrage of airstrikes today. a threat of a ground invasion comes as lebanese civilians try to flee the violence. united nations reports more than 90,000 have been displaced just since monday. today president biden said he hopes the conflict doesn't escalate any further. >> an all-out war is possible but i think there's also the opportunity still in play to have a settlement that could fundamentally change the whole

region, there needs to be a two-state solution, ultimately it needs to happen. >> matt bradley is in beirut, what else is the israeli military saying about the potential ground invasion? >> reporter: kate, when we talk about ground invasions whether it's the u.s. or the israelis or anybody we often talk about boots on the ground and that's what we heard, we heard that exact language from israel's chief of staff of the military saying for the soldiers, he was addressing his troops in the north of the country saying, get your boots ready. get your boots ready for maneuvers and be prepared to go into villages who have been fortified by hezbollah. and you'll confront these soldiers, hezbollah troops with professionalism they haven't encountered before, essentially saying, the israeli military was going to teach them a lesson in warfare, this is superbellicose language of the kind we haven't

heard up until just today and that's interesting this follows on a week of unprecedented hostilities since nearly lebanon's civil war that ended in 1990, even the 2006 war between hezbollah and israel didn't see this level of casualties in such a short period of time, we just passed 600 dead here in lebanon in just the past three days. to give you a sense of that, more than a thousand people killed in lebanon back in 2006 over the course of 30 days. so all of that does look like the israeli military have been tenderizing the ground, ready for some sort of ground invasion, but we haven't seen any evidence of that despite the walkie-talkie and pager explosions that happened last week, no real evidence that this was going to happen until just day with these comments. kate. >> matt, thank you. appreciate you.

turkey's president is defending hamas and sharply criticizing israel as he and other world leaders are here in the united states. >> president erdogan condemned the violence in gaza. he sat down for an exclusive and wide-ranging interview with keir simmons and keir joins us now. keir, the u.s. we know designates hamas as a foreign terrorist organization, but erdogan sees the militant group differently. what did you learn from your conversation? >> reporter: look, it's important to keep in mind throughout listening to this piece of this response from president erdogan that turkey is an ally of the united states and yet, and this is where the conflict in israel is really putting pressure on the alliance, yet, listen to how he talked about hamas. >> there are those who criticize

you for providing a home for hamas, who the u.s. say are terrorists. and you say you're oppose to terrorism. >> translator: we're of course against terrorism and terrorists. but -- i'm one of the leaders who's familiar with hamas and i never called hamas a terrorist organization. i don't approach hamas as a terrorist organization now. because hamas is spending efforts in order to protect their motherland and they are actually a group of resistance, so i can't call such a group of resistance a terrorist organization. let's look back in time.

occurred and then you'll see a much different picture. >> keir, you asked erdogan about russia and ukraine. >> reporter: that's right. the relationship between the u.s. and turkey has been difficult for many years now. and then when it comes to russia and ukraine, president erdogan said he'll go to a brics conference where president xi of china will be there, he said the relationship between russia and turkey is expanding. and he's been open with us in this interview that he does not think that nato should rush to admit ukraine as part of that group and that's something that president zelenskyy this week is set to say is part of the victory plan. it's a channeling week for president zelenskyy this week, he's having a falling-out with former president trump and j.d. vance, having suggested that

vance according to president zelenskyy is too radical and that president trump doesn't know how to solve the war in ukraine. his meeting with those two have been cancelled. he's left meeting with vice president harris and president biden. now a position that president zelenskyy would have wanted to find himself in. >> keir, thanks so much. further update on what keir just mentioned ukrainian president zelenskyy delivered a speech earlier today urging world leaders not to forget russia's war in ukraine. the prospect of a new u.s. administration. he made the case for leaders to stay unified behind kyiv and warned that russia is preparing to attack ukraine's nuclear power plants. >> aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid.

i'm not tipping. >> reporter: and the endless ways it seems they're being asked to pay extra. >> tell me why i just got frozen yogurt, which is self-serve. you do it all yourself. and at the end there was a tipping screen. for what? >> even "curb your enthusiasm's" larry david's frustrated. >> i have noticed in the little coffee shops, right, you go in and get a croissant with a cup of coffee and there is a tip spot and it freaks people out a little bit. >> reporter: and the fatigue is real. a new survey reveals 60% say they're tired of being asked to tip for various services and the same amount feel pressured to tip. that fatigue is having an impact on the service industry, including restaurants. fewer consumers now say they tip servers 20% or more. what's on the rise, tipping less. nearly a third said they tip as little as 10%. the survey shows people want to tip less and less often. what does that tell you?

>> that tells me that inflation has really worn us down over the past few years. it tells me that we were extra generous during the covid years and we're settling on a new normal. >> reporter: tipping has been a hot topic on the campaign trail, too. >> we are going to not charge taxes on tips. >> eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers. >> reporter: and voters in at least two states, massachusetts and arizona will face questions about how to pay tipped workers on the ballot in november. >> call me crazy, but unless someone is serving me or seating me somewhere, i don't feel like tips are necessary. >> reporter: but for many service workers, tipping is vital. >> it makes a difference in people being able to pay their rent and putting food on the table. >> reporter: she says her base pay is $1.17 at a mexican restaurant in nashville. >> when you realize that you have to serve yourself or you see how easy something is done,

who tends to push their buttons the most, maybe there's reason for that. some tips on how to tackle parenting issues. great to see you. thanks for being here you have theory about why there might be parents who are more likely to butt heads with one particular child. >> yes, so, i've been counseling kids and families for 30 years, every parent has one child who pushes their buttons the most and it's often the oldest of the same gender or the one who's the most like them. >> sorry, mom, that's very accurate. to that point, i mean, you've been counseling parents with kids for decades, what are so much the top issues that come up. >> i'd say the issues right now are kids who can't regulate themselves emotionally, anxiety

certainly for kids. but also for parents in the last few years. and then technology. kids are just always wanting more technology, more time on technology and that causes a lot of conflict, too. >> i don't think my husband or my sons zach, there was a period in high school where things were just really rough between them a lot. we had to learn how to de-escalate the situation, what are your best tips on that. >> a few things, recognize the pattern. pay attention to what's going on around --. two, practice our own coping strategies alongside them. take a deep breath. i love it when parents have a code word. one says, let's call for pizza, something like that, that automatically means we're going to put a pause right here.

>> we had a gong. we had it already. we had to go to our respective spaces. >> i love that. >> it worked. >> maybe it's not you butting heads with the kids but it's your partner. what do you recommend for that. >> the code word can be really helpful and taking about it. a saying in the therapy world, if it's hysterical it's historical. it's about us rather about them. to talk with your partner about that, a trusted friend, a therapist. >> just the parents. >> a trusted source. >> when does it cross that line where -- there's always going to be conflict in every relationship -- when would you advise people to get outside help and seek a therapist?

both victims have non-life threatening wounds. the governor's office says he is monitoring the situation, and the fbi is on scene. this is actually the same courthouse where michael jackson was tried and acquitted nearly 20 years ago. no heat today, but it will be back. here's meteorologist kari hall with a look at our 7-day forecast today is our little break from the extreme heat. it was such a hot start to our workweek, but now we're looking at highs in some of our warmer areas in the low 80s. today, a lot of seconds. now tomorrow it will begin to warm up and we'll begin to see more upper 80s for parts of the tri valley into the far north bay. and on friday, low 90s in the forecast with a lot of sunshine. it will still be warm, but not as hot for the weekend and into early next week. we're looking at upper 80s, but it will also be warming up for next tuesday and checking out san francisco with a major cool down. the high today will only reach about 68

but some folks in one part of san jose are saying it may be too much of a draw for them. here's nbc bay area's kris sanchez with their concerns about a new warehouse being pitched for their neighborhood. i like costco. it's not that i don't like costco, but i'm not sure this would be a good a good spot. i don't know if there's enough room. okay, here's a location. prospect road at lawrence expressway in the westgate west shopping center. there's already a trader joe's market here. several other businesses and restaurants all in the same plaza, and several shuttered retail outlets where the proposed costco would go. i like the idea of having a closer costco, but the traffic is the main concern that i would have,
