member. the games against the giants was 50,000 people. i wanted to remember the 20 game
5:01 am
win streak. i want to remember certain individual plays that i had, whether they were diving catches in the outfield or game winning home run, walk, couple walk off hits, just like that place was special for me. i'm like happy, but i'm really sad at the same time. and it's just heartbreaking because that they're leaving because, i mean, you can go to sacramento, you can go to vegas, but it's not oakland. i think it would be a lot of demonstrations because people in oakland are very frustrated with this management and what they feel like. they just straight up lied to them. now at 5:00, an emotional goodbye. this morning, fans are getting ready to face the end of an era as the oakland a's prepare to play their final game in oakland. here's a live look at the coliseum. today's game expected to draw an influx of fans hoping to bid the team farewell. we're breaking down everything you need to know if you're planning on attending. plus, florida hunkers down as hurricane helena approaches. the storm is expected to make landfall as a category three. a live report on the final
5:02 am
preparations now underway, and meteorologist kari hall is tracking its path. this is today in the bay. and good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus is off this morning, and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike for a look at that morning commute. what about the forecast? good morning kari. good morning. yesterday was so nice. it did get really windy in the afternoon into the evening. but we are going to start to see those temperatures trending up a little bit more. right now we're nice and cool. it's 57 in dublin, palo alto and in san francisco and in san jose, 62 degrees. as we take a look at these highs for this afternoon, we are going to be up to 85 in novato and santa rosa and 78 degrees in hayward. we're looking at low 70s in san francisco and upper seconds for concord in san jose. look for a high of 80 degrees and some upper 80s, even a few low 90s
5:03 am
for some of our inland valleys. we'll be tracking even more of a warm up going into tomorrow, so i'll have a look at those numbers in a few minutes. mike, you're already concerned about the slowing in san francisco. yeah, folks, look, if you're going to take the bay bridge into the city, i'm concerned the flow looks great right now. low clouds. not the problem. the issue is low capacity. here. only one lane open. in the last five minutes. we have seen speed sensors start to improve. so i'm hoping that means that they open the lanes after the overnight repair work. but just like tuesday, we had early slowing coming into san francisco on that central freeway stretch. i'll continue to follow that and i'll update. i'll continue to update and refresh caltrans talking about whether or not there on scene the rest of the east bay getting over toward the maze is just fine. through contra costa and alameda counties, the north bay no delays, and anywhere south of here, the only slowing we have showing up on the sensors is out of the altamont pass. typical for 580. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well, it's the bottom of the ninth for the a's and their six decade run. in a
5:04 am
matter of hours, it will all be over. the a's will play the final game of their final homestand ever at the oakland coliseum. and today marks an end not only for a stadium, but those whose lives were always intertwined there today in the bay's kris sanchez is here with a look ahead not only at the future of baseball in oakland, kris, but also for the people who worked at the ballpark for years. i mean, there's that element as well, right? people's livelihoods. it's been a very long and emotional goodbye for fans who really, up until the end, held out hope that this day would not come if what happened last night at the coliseum is any indication, it is going to be emotional. after the game, a groundskeeper was scooping up dirt from the field into bags and water bottles for fans to keep and take home. that's a contrast to what we saw in other video fans ripping out coliseum seats. we'll mention they didn't get to take those home. oakland police tell us they are going to have more than 100 officers at tonight's game, because they
5:05 am
know that things are going to be at a fever pitch. now, if the fans have been running through a whole spectrum of emotions, from nostalgia to sadness and frustration, workers have that added layer of financial insecurity. while the stadium contractor aramark told us that they are bargaining in good faith with the workers union and they're trying to offer people other roles within their organization. some of the workers say aramark is refusing to pay their severance and their health insurance. we do have married couples that are working, have been working here for a while, and they're not going to get anything, and the only thing that they're going to get is the last check of this season. meanwhile, the oakland ballers are reminding a's fans that there is still baseball in oakland, a team for the fans built by the fans like them. so fans are going to maybe go see the a's in las vegas. some of them say that they will go to sacramento to see when they play
5:06 am
in the interim, but they say it's not going to be the same. no. the demolition of the tropicana, by the way, is coming up in about a week and a half. wow. yeah. so really just it's the end of an era. it really is for the bay area for in recent years. it feels like fans can commit to make the trip to sacramento, the trip to las vegas. but it will be kind of a test as time goes well. and to keep that up as well. i mean, it's expensive. it's not like we can go to vegas. i mean, i don't know how many people come from brooklyn to see the giants in san francisco, right? weren't they the brooklyn? yeah. giants. bombers. brooklyn. dodgers. dodgers brooklyn dodgers. that's right. baseball. well. thanks, chris. you've started our coverage. our coverage also continues. the a's final game at the coliseum continues all morning long ahead at our 530 part of the hour. bob redell will join us live from outside the ballpark with a look back at some of the most memorable moments that fans shared at the iconic stadium. firefighters are looking into how a massive fire
5:07 am
started at a south bay business. take a look at this large fire sparked about 1030 last night at a napa auto parts store in morgan hill on monterey road, near east main avenue. several other fire agencies. gilroy, san jose. headed to morgan hill to help put out that massive fire. no word on any injuries or how it started. tonight caltrans is set to close lanes on the bay bridge. here's a live look now at the bridge. caltrans is planning to shut down the far right lanes of westbound i-80 from yerba buena island tunnel to the end of the bridge. now this is happening so workers can do routine maintenance and inspection on the bridge cables. that shutdown starts tonight at eight, and it will last until 4:00 tomorrow morning. caltrans workers will shut down the bridge around that time every weeknight until the end of may. now, drivers will still be allowed on the bridge. they'll just be restricted to 40mph. developing now in florida, people are bracing for the impact of hurricane helene. it
5:08 am
is now a category two storm as it gains strength and rushes towards the florida coast at this hour. the panhandle, a potential target for landfall later today. today in the bay's jay gray joins us live from tallahassee. and jay, talk to us about the conditions right now. yeah. laura, ginger, we've had on again, off again rain all night into the early morning. but nothing like we're going to see in the next few hours here. look, this storm really getting into the deep, warm gulf waters, which is like rocket fuel for the system. the national hurricane center saying that this is going to be a monster with winds over 100 miles an hour and with the storm surge they describe as a catastrophic and potentially deadly landfall. now, just hours away. boards to try and deflect the winds and rain. backs to try and hold out
5:09 am
the storm surge. others filled with supplies. florida preparing for an assault from helene. most of the models have this becoming a major hurricane. some even have it becoming a category four. the storm churning in the warm waters of the gulf, accelerating, intensifying and growing. the hazards are going to be far reaching from this area, with tropical storm force winds 250 to 300 miles out, 3500 national guard troops have been deployed to the region. power crews from across the country. tropical cyclone soon to be and emergency response teams staged ready to move in as soon as possible. we could expect anything from swift water and flooded area rescues to structural collapse along the coastline. the worry is not only winds well over 100 miles an hour, but a wall of water that could come with that. i'm stressed, i'm stressed. i mean, they're calling for a possible ten foot surge here. i've dealt
5:10 am
with seven. that's three feet higher. yeah, i am very concerned. concern that stretches inland as well. this will be the largest and most catastrophic storm that we have ever seen in recorded history of our community. tallahassee, in the direct path of the storm. you know, let's talk a little more about the intensity, the magnitude of this storm. forecasters saying it could still be at hurricane strength. well inland even as it crosses into georgia. the wind scope of this thing, 4 to 500 miles. fema saying they're preparing for a multi-state event that helene could affect as many as nine states. ginger. laura wow. wow. those numbers are really quite concerning. are those very much so. yeah, the size of it. all right. thank you very much, jay. and stay safe. so let's now head over to meteorologist kari hall.
5:11 am
i mean, we're talking about a wide path here. yeah, we do have to remember that with hurricanes, it's not just one narrow little area that gets the big impact. it's a large area, a large region that's going to be affected by this hurricane. we're already seeing some of those outer rain bands, those feeder bands coming into florida, and they also could produce some severe weather even before the main storm hits. and it was just upgraded to a category two hurricane. now, those wind speeds and some of those gusts are at 100mph. and it's now moving at 12mph. we talked about the water temperature in the gulf that in some spots is 88 degrees, which is very warm. that's going to allow this hurricane to rapidly intensify as it moves closer to tallahassee, which may be in the direct path of the eye of the hurricane, as we know, that's where you see the biggest impact. and some of the strongest winds, but pretty much the entire state of florida is going to see some of those, at least tropical storm force
5:12 am
winds. and then it continues farther to the north into georgia. and that's also possibly a still a category one hurricane, as it moves through. and then just move slowly over parts of tennessee over the next couple of days while dumping some rain. so we are talking about a major storm surge here and a flooding threat all across the southeast as it makes landfall later on tonight into early tomorrow morning, we'll be tracking that. we'll talk about what the bay area will see as we go into the weekend with a warm-up in our forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. thanks a lot, kari. it is 511 right now. tesla gearing up for a robotaxi unveiling. coming up next on today in the bay. the special invitations. the company is reportedly sending out. and when the big reveal is slated for. plus, a big milestone for snl. a sneak peek at this saturday's star studded premiere. we've got much more news ahead. you're watching today in the bay

the upper 50s and it's going to be at times a little breezy and partly to mostly cloudy through at least 9:00. after that, we're clearing out and warming up, and you'll notice that today may be a little warmer than it was yesterday. so we'll talk about all of our microclimates and what's ahead going into the weekend. coming up. and going into the city this live look at the bay bridge still looks just
5:16 am
fine. we can catch the glimpse of the traffic flowing smoothly into san francisco, off of the bay bridge, just after we catch a view here. there is slowing on those sensors because of the work at the central freeway. the repair work for the retaining rail. there may be some more slowing in your future. i hope that's actually better changes though. meanwhile, let's get a look at the futures with silvan. thank you mike. good morning. let's start with wall street which is set to open higher following a rally overnight in asia. and today in europe. china leading the gains today with the shanghai up more than 3% after state media confirms president president xi jinping is backing the government's latest efforts to boost the struggling economy. chip and tech stocks getting a big boost from positive earnings from memory chip maker micron. now, stocks were mostly lower yesterday, with the dow and the s&p 500 backing off record highs. but the dow, the nasdaq and the s&p they're still on track for their 1st september gains in five years. now in

focus today we get data on jobless claims, durable goods pending home sales and gdp. openai is considering a major overhaul that would change the maker of chatgpt into a for profit business. the company would keep its non profit segment as a separate entity. sources say the new structure would be more straightforward for investors and make it easier for employees to realize financial gains. ceo sam altman would receive equity in the company for the first time. now. the news comes after openai's chief technology officer meera marathi, said she's leaving the company. she was named interim ceo last year after openai's board briefly ousted allman, and tesla is sending out invitations for its robo taxi event on october 10th with the tagline we robot now! the event was originally scheduled for august, but it was pushed back and not much is known about the robo taxi other than speculation. it won't have a steering wheel or
5:18 am
pedals, and it will be like the cybertruck in terms of design. laura and ginger, my son, will love it. yeah interesting. i know that's what i said to him. no steering wheel, no pedals. wow. yeah. we. robot. i guess i'm scared. yeah, a little bit. tell us if you've got a plus one. thanks savannah. well, trending this morning. this weekend marks a milestone in tv history. the 50th season of saturday night live officially kicking off and fresh off her sixth emmy win. host jean smart is getting ready to celebrate. that is, if she can get a word in edgewise. 50 years memories from new york. it's saturday night. and now it is my turn. this is how you answer it. doing my neighborhood. who is it? you're not actually going to show a clip from every season. get me a drink and make it a double. you cut me off, and
5:19 am
that's kind of rude. stop it. stop it! knock it off already. all right. jeez and yes, the 50th anniversary celebration starts this saturday. no matter what the iconic actress may have to say about it, smart makes her debut appearance as host alongside musical artist jelly roll. you can catch all the action when it airs live at 830 saturday night, and you can also catch the replay following nbc bay area news at 11. i can't wait, especially with this political year. they're going to have so much fun. they may have something to say about things. maybe. maybe there's a little bit going on. all right. a little bit going on in the weather department. yes. can we have a repeat of tomorrow? it was i mean, yesterday. yeah. tomorrow is friday. let's just move ahead. yeah. we don't want to repeat tomorrow because it's going to be hot. so we're trending towards some hotter temperatures in the inland valleys. and a lot of changes underway. let's get a live look
5:20 am
outside in san francisco where you can see the low clouds, the mist and the drizzle to start out the day. cool temperatures there, but it will be for the valleys a few degrees warmer, headed for the 90s in the inland areas and maybe even close to 100 degrees. a hot temperatures continue into the weekend. at least we do have a cool morning start where we are right now at 56, in san francisco. also seeing 56 pretty widespread in the north bay and 51 in danville and 57 now in livermore. as we go into today, it'll make it up to 80 in san jose. so not too bad, but a short drive to morgan hill. you're going to notice that it's going to be warmer and 90 in gilroy. so that's just a 10 degrees range right there. all within driving down 101. we're going to see temperatures up to 77 in fremont today. while you head over to palo alto. it will be in the upper 70s low 70s for san francisco. still pretty nice. there but we are looking at some upper 80s for concord as well as 89 in fairfield and then
5:21 am
into the day tomorrow we see it going up another ten degrees for a lot of spots. so upper 90s and even close to 100 degrees mid 90s for much of the tri valley and oakland will see a high of 85 degrees there going into saturday. there are some slight cooling near the coast and parts of the north bay but that really doesn't have much of an impact for some of the inland valleys. but there will be, at least in some areas, places where we can go and cool off. high pressure remains in control into sunday as well as early next week, but eventually we'll start to see some cooler temperatures coming in by the end of next week. so fairfield, we're still in with the temperatures going up and down way up for next tuesday, and then back down by friday, where we could only see highs up to about 80 degrees. you can see all the changes there over the next seven days. so the good thing is that you can just keep checking in every morning to know what to wear that day, because it may go from jackets to shorts and also back to
5:22 am
jackets. the next day. and mike, you were checking in at the bay bridge? yeah, we're looking at the shot here from emeryville, still looking at a smooth flow into the city right here. as you're approaching the skyway and the central freeway. but more volume shows up here, as we can see approaching treasure island. and that's why i'm still concerned that they have this crew on the grid. caltrans not as much slowing as we saw on tuesday. it's a little bit better, but we still have reports that the crew is down to one lane and scheduled to possibly be there until 6 a.m. on tuesday. that caused a backup all the way across the span. it's not there yet. this morning. still a pretty smooth drive until the tail end of that bridge approaching 101 off the skyway, so we'll continue to follow that. hopefully the next few we'll see it clearing. we do have that build for highway 37 right on schedule. there highway 4 no break, but we know the volume is building into concord out of pittsburg bay point. a smooth drive down the 680 corridor in through the tri valley and down into the south bay. this crash north 101 heading out of san jose. it
5:23 am
looks like it's over on the shoulder. no problems for 2.37 or any of the other south bay freeways right now. back to you. thank you. mike. addressing the rise of obesity in america. next on today, the bay will talk about new findings and policies that could helmake ap

we put on the table for dinner is just one factor. 28% of adult californians qualify as obese, which is high, but lower than the 43% of all u.s. adults. 20% of all american children have obesity. these are all numbers that have been trending upward across the board for decades. the trust for america's health, which collected the data, says obesity is not about the choices we make in a day. it's about public policy in our communities. it's not simply individual personal behavior, but there's other health conditions that stress our genetics, but also the environment. importantly, it's how we have access, whether we have access to healthy and affordable nutritious foods, as well as convenient and safe places to engage in physical activity. data shows that obesity related issues cost the nation $170 billion a year, so increasing access to affordable foods and exercise, continuing

memories are coming back to life this week, delivering one last ray of sunshine. but it's bittersweet at best, with many questions hanging in the air about how fans will respond once the game and the cheers are over. people in oakland are very frustrated with this management and what they feel like. they just straight up lied to them. this is today in the bay. good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus is off this morning and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast for that final game. and the rest of us here in the bay area checking in with meteorologist kari hall. how are we looking today? it's going to be not a lot like yesterday, but just a touch warmer in some spots. like san jose. it will be up to 80 for this afternoon, but it will be warmer in the south county and gilroy will reach a high of 90. as we move over toward the east bay oakland today for that last game, we'll see a high of 77 degrees and 87
5:32 am
in walnut creek, as well as 87 in livermore in half moon bay. upper 60s. and in redwood city, 76 degrees. san francisco is headed for the low 70s in the downtown area, and the mission district. outer sunset at 64 and 74 for mill valley, as hot as 91 in ukiah. so we'll talk about the range and temperatures. we'll help you make some weekend plans with some events. mike, you've been closely tracking the work on i-80 and the volume as well. behind me on the screen, mid-span, there's a volume build, some slowing. and then on carey side, folks, look at that. you can see the lights slowing a bit into the city around the central freeway, where they continue to have the work on the grid. not as much slowing as tuesday, but slowing nonetheless. it's early build and holding on there into san francisco that crews slated to be there until possibly 6 a.m, so that may be causing some more slowing as you get into the city. if you're leaving in the next few minutes. we're watching a slower drive on the incline. there may be metering lights in
5:33 am
the next couple of minutes at the bay bridge. that's just a little bit slower at a couple minutes there. top of the screen. 37 highway four over on the right. those are typical slower patterns as you come through the north bay and also out of antioch with the build for contra costa county. no big deal for 680. bay bridge itself again if they keep that slower drive in the approach to the central freeway, they may turn those metering lights a little slower in the next few minutes. i'll keep watching very closely for you. back to you. sounds good. thanks, mike. after six decades, the oakland coliseum may not have been the nicest home, but as most any a's fan will tell you, it was our home. a home that created a lifetime of memories. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live outside the coliseum this morning. today, no doubt bob is going to be so bittersweet at best for those fans. correct. good morning to ginger and laura. you know, the oakland a's have been playing here at the coliseum behind me since 1968. there's many people who came here as kids who now bring their own kids or their own grandkids to these games. but of course, that

final game today, after the team owner, john fisher, decided to move the team out of the bay area after not being able to come to an agreement on a new ballpark here. this is a live look. you're looking at the main entrance to the coliseum, where you can see another car just pulled up here. the gates open at 8:00 this morning. there are already fans lined up there. from my vantage point, it looks like there's about ten cars. i did hear someone earlier yelling let's go oakland! so fans obviously lining up early for when those gates open at 8:00 so they can begin tailgating their final tailgate before an a's game here at the coliseum. that first pitch later this afternoon, today at 12:37 p.m. against the texas rangers in front of what we believe will be the first and only sellout crowd. all season. as you can see in this video. video. thousands of fans showed up yesterday to cheer on the a's as they unfortunately lost to the rangers 1 to 5 earlier this week. we spoke to fans about
5:35 am
their favorite memories here at the coliseum. i think it would have to be scott hatteberg's, the 20 game win. i think that would be my biggest thing. probably rickey, probably rickey stealing the bases. you know, that's probably my favorite anyway. and dallas braden's perfect game. those are my two biggest things. when the oakland a's walk off the diamond at the coliseum for the final time later today, she, like many other fans, will be digging into her pocket. i have a lot of tissues that i'm carrying with me. it's hard. it's so hard. i know the last game, there won't be a dry eye in this whole place. to me, it's an emotional injury. former a's executive andy dolich, who will also be at today's final game. has a message for a's owner john fisher, who has angered fans by moving the to team sacramento for the next three seasons. while a new stadium is built in las vegas. as you've seen, he's
5:36 am
taken out these thank you ads. bob and how does he have the nerve? how can he be so tone deaf as to thank people when he's moving the team out of a marketplace that has supported him for 57 years now? john, you had an opportunity to build at the coliseum and or howard terminal, and now you're in a dominoes toppling game. we'll see how it works. there are real concerns about how angry fans might be about the a's leaving, which is why oakland pd says they'll be posting more than 100 officers out here today. just in case there are any issues. on a side note, the a's final home series is going to boost ridership. numbers are finally surpassing pre-pandemic levels. the agency says it had over 204,000 riders on tuesday. that's the first time it's past the 200,000 mark since the pandemic started. bart has added extra trains today to help carry fans to the games. live here at

5:40 am
to the today show staff this morning about her decision to step down after more than five years as co-anchor with savannah guthrie. she also posted the news on instagram. hoda has been with nbc news for nearly three decades after previously working at dateline and as the co-host of the fourth hour of today with kathie lee gifford and then jenna bush hager. we'll have much more on this ahead at 630, including her tearful goodbye on set this morning. 539 right now, now to a live look at interstate 680 in walnut creek, the corridor that's now in line for a major makeover with the announcement of some serious funding. east bay congressman mark desaulnier has announced $166 million in federal funding for two projects completing the express lane gap northbound between highway 24 and highway 242, and also a new ramp system between the north main street and treat boulevard ramps to reduce some bottleneck traffic. desaulnier believes the improvements will boost safety
5:41 am
