it's heartbreaking because that they're leaving, because, i mean, you can go to sacramento, you can go to vegas, but it's not oakland right now at six. an emotional goodbye this morning. fans are getting ready to face the end of an era as the a's prepare to play their final game in oakland. we're breaking down everything you need to know before first pitch. plus, an intense firefight overnight. new details on flames ripping through a building in the south bay. and hurricane helene intensifies. you're looking live

at the coast of florida, where you can see those strong winds there. we're live. with the preparations underway ahead of today's landfall. this is today in the bay. and good thursday morning to you. i'm ginger conejero saab, filling in for marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike for that early morning commute this morning. but first let's check the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. lots of changes here. we're going to go back from a nice fall trend to summer. like the way we started the week over the next couple of days and even though we're starting out cool with clouds this morning, temperatures will heat up quickly as the sky clears. so in san jose, we're going from 62 degrees at 9:00 to a 1:00 temperature of 76. and today, in the low 80s for the middle of the day. but some of our inland valleys will be noticeably warmer. in livermore, we're looking at a high of 87 today, 85 in santa rosa and ukiah today, hitting a high of
6:02 am
91 degrees. so we'll talk about even hotter temperatures ahead. mike, you're updating a crash in san jose. yeah, we looked at early slowing in san jose around kearny street. it turns out chp says the exact location is closer to almaden expressway for north 87, a slow drive from just north of capital expressway that will delay you getting into downtown and up toward 101. 101 has your typical slowing there, and 87 hopefully will clear. there's no major injuries, but three vehicles are involved in the source of this slowing. for hayward south 880. there may be a crash close to a street. we'll get updates when chp arrives on scene. there that's the only disturbance anywhere south of the bay bridge and the bay bridge recovers from the earlier delays into san francisco. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. it is the bottom of the ninth for the a's and their six decade ru. fans no doubt waking up with heavy hearts today. the a's playing the final game of their final homestand ever at the oakland coliseum. and today marks an end not only for the

stadium, but also for people whose lives revolved around a's baseball. today, in the bay's kris sanchez is here with a look ahead for oakland fans and for the people who work there for years. right, so not just the fans whose lives rotated around baseball, the game, but also the work. it's been a very long and emotional goodbye for fans who really held out hope that this day would not come. so if what happened last night at the coliseum is any indication, it is going to be an emotional night at the coliseum. after the game last night, a groundskeeper was scooping up dirt from the field into bags and water bottles for fans to take home, and keep. now that is the contrast to what we saw in other videos. fans ripping out coliseum seats will tell you they did not get to take those home. they did not get to keep them. but oakland police tell us they will have more than 100 officers at tonight's game, just in case things get rowdy. if the fans have been running through the whole gamut of emotions, from nostalgia to sadness and frustration, workers have an

extra layer of financial insecurity. while the stadium contractor aramark told us that they are bargaining with workers unions and will offer people roles within the organization. some of the workers say aramark is actually refusing to pay severance and health insurance. we do have married couples that are working, have been working here for a while, and they're not going to get anything, and the only thing that they're going to get is the last check of this season. meanwhile, the oakland ballers are reminding a's fans that there is still baseball in oakland, a team built by fans like them. our fans say that maybe they'll go to las vegas when the stadium is built. the demolition on the tropicana coming up in about a week or so. maybe they'll go to sacramento, but we won't know until this day is over, right? right. and you can't catch those just afternoon games. if you happen to have a free one. all right. it is tough. our coverage of the a's final game at the

coliseum continues all morning long. ahead at 630, bob redell joins us live from outside the ballpark with a look back at some of the most memorable moments fans shared at the iconic stadium. 604 right now, firefighters are looking into how a massive fire started at a south bay business. the large fire sparked about 1030 last night at a napa auto parts store in morgan hill. it is located on monterey road near east main avenue. other fire agencies in gilroy and san jose headed to morgan hill to help out, put out the massive fire. no word on any injuries or how that fire started. developing now a live look in key west, florida, where people are bracing for the impact of hurricane helene. it's now a category two hurricane as it gains strength and rushes toward the florida coast. at this hour, the panhandle, a potential target for landfall later today. today in the bay's jay gray joins us live from tallahassee. and jay, talk to us

about some of the conditions that you're seeing right now. yeah, ginger, we've seen on again, off again rain throughout the late night into the early morning. a stopped right now. but we know things are going to get much worse as we move through the day. in fact, this storm just churning in those warm gulf waters, gathering strength. national hurricane center warning this one could be a monster at landfall. they expect winds well over 100 miles an hour. and what they call a catastrophic and deadly storm surge, again crossing the coastline in just hours. now boards to try and deflect the winds and rain. bags to try and hold out the storm surge. others filled with supplies. florida preparing for an assault from helene. most of the models have this becoming a major hurricane. some even have it becoming a category four. the storm churning in the warm waters of the gulf, accelerating,

intensifying and growing. the hazards are going to be far reaching from this area, with tropical storm force winds 250 to 300 miles out, 3500 national guard troops have been deployed to the region. power crews from across the country. tropical cyclone soon to be and emergency response team staged ready to move in as soon as possible. we could expect anything from swift water and flooded area rescues to structural collapse along the coastline. the worry is not only winds well over 100 miles an hour, but a wall of water that could come with that. i'm stressed, i'm stressed. i mean, they're calling for a possible ten foot surge here. i've dealt with seven. that's three feet higher. yeah, i am very concerned. concern that stretches inland as well. this will be the largest and most catastrophic storm that we have ever seen in recorded history of our community. tallahassee, in the direct path of the storm.
6:08 am
yeah. and let's talk a little more about the intensity and the magnitude of this storm. the wind field could be up to 500 miles wide when this storm makes landfall. forecasters say it could continue to maintain hurricane strength well inland, even as it crosses over and into georgia. and what fema said is that they're preparing for a multi-state event. they believe helene will affect at least nine states before it's said and done. ginger, this is a massive system, and it's one that's going to bring a lot of problems for a lot of people. you can just only imagine, even just with the preparations, how much stress you can hear that in that man's voice. thank you so much. stay safe there, jay. and now we continue with meteorologist kari hall. now, kari, the storm could impact more states in the south, as jay just mentioned. absolutely. because you look at the width of this hurricane and it is a very large one that even though now it is just a category

two and i say just a category two, that will have major impacts, that will also continue to bring in heavy rainfall and high winds, not just to florida, but other states as well. it's moving to the north northeast at 12mph, expected to make landfall later on this evening into early tomorrow. and then look at the path after that once it moves into georgia as a category one hurricane, it's just going to spin round and round, kind of stuck in the same spot over the tennessee and ohio valleys, just dumping massive amounts of rainfall through friday into the weekend. so this could create rainfall totals that may reach anywhere from 8 to 12in. plus, there are some forecasts that bring 18in of rainfall to the appalachian mountains over the next few days. so they're looking at flash flooding and landslides that will be possible as this moves through parts of the south into the midwest. so here's once again what to expect moving through the gulf of

mexico with very warm water. right now, some of those sea surface temperatures at 88 degrees, so that will cause it to rapidly intensify. and then for tonight into tomorrow, making landfall, some of those storm surge forecasts bring it up to 20ft near tallahassee. and that flooding threat continues all across the southeast. we'll be watching this with more of what's coming out of what's happening with helene coming up in a few minutes. mike's been tracking gas prices. how's it looking there? well, you know, we have a little bit of a break. just a few cents. we'll take it, though. the best price around the bay is now 416 in the north bay, vacaville. there's sam's club on helen power drive with that price, that one price point next best is in alameda county. we only have hayward with abe on mission boulevard reporting 419 for that deal. and that's about the same as we had in the south bay for the last few days in the south bay itself, though, the best is in sunnyvale now. that's up a few cents at 427. great gas on north matilda avenue. go
