26th, 2024. breaking news. set to strike. helene gained strength now a major hurricane. ready to bear down on florida's gulf coast. al roker is here to track where it's heading next. also breaking, indictment unsealed. new york city mayor eric adams is now facing five federal charges. how adams is responding to the accusations. royal nightmare. attendees said they were scammed out of hundreds of dollars. who they say is to blame for dropping the ball. and say cheese? or don't. how one photographer's capturing kids exactly as they are, telling them they don't have to smile and why the results are moving some parents to tears. it's today's good news.
12:02 pm
>> i love that. >> you get some authentic looks. that's ahead. but we begin with breaking news. intensifying hurricane helene now officially category 3. >> the center of helene is expected to make landfall in florida's big bend region within hours, authorities say the threats and damage could be catastrophic, places like naples and fort myers are reporting flooded streets already. forecasters say the storm surge could reach up to 20 feet in some places, the florida governor say people must take helene seriously. >> this area hasn't had a major hurricane hit in quite some time. >> forecasters are warning the impacts could last for days, all the way up to tennessee, north carolina, millions are bracing for potential flooding, power outages, evacuations and major

flight disruptions. nbc news correspondent kathy park is keeping an eye on the conditions in tallahassee for us. but let's start with al roker, helene just upgraded, right to a category 3, so where is it headed? >> guys, what's interesting, you can see on this visible satellite picture trying to get an eye together, but this is a massive storm over 500 miles in diameter, right now, it's 160 miles southwest of tampa, florida, 120 mile per hour winds. it's now moving northeast at 120 miles an hour. we always worry about tornadoes, guess what, tornado watches from south carolina down to florida from 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 p.m. tonight. we'll be watching that as well. we have tropical storm warnings from asheville all the way down to key west. hurricane warnings from central georgia right on down into the big bend area of florida. here it comes.
12:04 pm
making landfall possibly as a 3, this thing has a lot of runway, in fact the fact of the matter in the last 36 hours it's rapidly intensified twice, could it rapidly intensify again to get to maybe 130 miles an hour? it's not impossible. hurricane-force winds extend out nearly 150 miles from the center, this makes landfall some time tonight and tonight it continues up through georgia, impacting atlanta, friday night it's into the apalacchians. to tampa, 10 to 20 feet. then, the winds, wind gust of up to 110 miles per hour, that will knock down trees, cause massive power outages and continues friday right on up into atlanta and again airport delays, power
12:05 pm
outages possible and we'll be looking at heavy rain the risk of flooding stretching from tallahassee all the way to asheville for a high risk, anywhere from 10 to 20 inches of rain before this is all over, this is a major flooding event all of the way up into the appalachians, guys. >> kathy, let's bring you in now, in tallahassee, an area that could direct hit. you've been out there talking with people, bracing for this storm, what are they saying? >> i can tell you there's certainly a high level of anxiety here in tallahassee, many residents say they lived through a lot of storms living in this region, but nothing quite to this scale, nothing with this type of intensity. earlier today we had a chance to visit an emergency shelter that has opened up and it was quickly filling up, it's not at capacity just yet, these residents felt better being in a more secured environment and having power.
12:06 pm
take a listen. >> you know what, i've never been in a storm of category 3 and category 4. i'm using wisdom, wisdom tells me to get out of the home. >> we've never been through a hurricane like this big, we'd rather be safe just in case. >> reporter: here in tallahassee, we're a little bit farther inland the concern isn't so much on storm surge but wind damage, it's the tree city for a reason, when you combine that fact with the possibility of hurricane-force winds for an extended period of time we're looking at a loft downed trees, power lines. we're tracking more breaking

news right now, this time out of new york city, mayor eric adams hit with five federal charges today include bribery and wire fraud. >> the counts against him were revealed in 57-page federal indictment unsealed this morning. a year-long scheme by the mayor to solicit and conceal illegal donations and gifts from foreign nationals. primarily turkish officials. they alleged he received hotel rooms like you're seeing here. >> the democratic mayor denies any wrongdoing saying he'll stay in office despite growing calls to resign. here's what the mayor said earlier today. >> in new york, wait to hear our defense. i look forward to defending myself and defending the people of this city as i've done throughout my entire professional year.
12:08 pm
>> let's bring in tom winter. tom, this indictment quite long, quite detailed, while in the last few weeks we've seen a series of investigations and resignations it's focusing on the mayor, walk us through what it said. >> as a matter of fact, lot of those investigative steps and the resignations has nothing to do with this. when that money comes from overseas, you're funneling it through somebody here, that's one of the big concerns that the federal prosecutors have. one of the things that happened in new york city you get enough small donors, enough people participating in your campaign you can get matching taxpayer funds to your campaign to the tune of $10 million.
12:09 pm
as a sample of the allegations we saw in this indictment. >> how much matching funds are we talking about here? >> well, they're talking and they've alleged that he received $10 million in matching funds and on top of that they also believe he received over 123,000 in gifts or benefits basically he paid a certain amount to fly on turkish airways, lot of this has to do with allegations of his involvement with turkish businesses. first-class tickets, going around the world, it adds up pretty fast. >> tom winter, thanks so much. the israeli military says it has killed another hezbollah commander with a precise air strike in beirut. >> israel is still launching attacks despite the united states and allies proposing

12:11 pm
so much need that was still unmet it was very different from what i've seen in the past and i spoke with the united nations unicef represent here in lebanon about all that. here's what he told me. >> what's the main challenge you're facing beyond the lack of items for distribution? >> we're here for a few days or a few weeks, a few months? more difficult for people. >> reporter: one thing that sets this apart from other situations is just how fast this emergency situation has developed, you know, it was only last week that we really started this whole thing, being set off, now we're talking about according to top lebanese officials there could be as many half a million people displaced within this country due to israeli bombardments of
