in florida. we're tracking where the life threatening storm surge will hit next. 38 days to go with the running out, both presidential or with time running out. both presidential candidates are making a push to gain support. the campaign stops both former president trump and vice president kamala harris are making this weekend. also the key funding harris will pick up here in silicon valley. plus i am the only candidate in this race who supports rent control that allows those seniors to age in place. the san francisco mayoral race is also heating up the top issues discussed during a town hall debate. welcome to friday morning, starting your dy

with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm ginger conejero. big news. overnight, helene weakened to a tropical storm, but it is still packing a serious punch as it moves across georgia. this is new video out of atlanta. many had to be rescued in boats from apartments due to flooding. and this morning, the national hurricane center is urging people to stay away from windows, calling the situation dangerous and life threatening. and here's a live look in atlanta at this hour, where thousands remain without power. helene made landfall last night as a category four along florida's big bend. helene being blamed for at least three deaths across florida and georgia. people living in florida's panhandle are waking up to destruction left behind in that storm's wake. today in the bay jay gray is in tallahassee with a look at just some of the damage. hey there. good morning helene. still causing major problems as it continues to push inland. let's talk a little bit about what we saw in tallahassee overnight. a violent wind storm
5:03 am
moving through this area as the storm pushed across the coastline and through tallahassee. we know right now that there are more than a million people without power in florida, and under 800,000 or so in georgia without power. and those are numbers that are only going to climb with this storm flooding a serious issue across florida. we've had several high water rescue attempts in pasco county alone, 40 people pulled from the high water. and that's a situation that's going to continue as this storm continues to drop massive amounts of rain and strong winds following in all of that as it pushes now through georgia and ultimately into tennessee, it's going to continue as we've talked about, causing serious problems here and across the entire path of this storm, just a massive wind field at landfall, close to 500 miles wide. this the strongest storm to ever hit the big bend
5:04 am
region of florida, at least in modern times. since they've been tracking these storms, it's one that we won't know the full extent of until we get some sunrise here and can really get out and inspect and figure out exactly what helene left behind. that's the latest right now from here in tallahassee. i'm jay gray, back to you. thank you jay. tough going for so many. well cinthia pimentel joins us now. where is helene right now and headed next. it's definitely been impacting georgia and the carolinas overnight. we can see right now it is moving towards the north northeast at around 30 miles an hour and still packing some really gusty winds with it. and lots of these places remaining under that tropical storm watch as helene has been downgraded. so the georgia area carolinas definitely areas to watch as we go through the day to day. and the weekend. there are still flooding and gusty wind concerns, especially with those landslides and power outages. something to watch there. it will be downgraded as
5:05 am
we go on into saturday and sunday into a tropical depression as it goes into tennessee and the kentucky area as it kind of wraps around itself and eventually destroys as we go on into the second half of the weekend. so a situation worth watching as we go through today in the bay. and of course, we'll also talk about what we can expect here in the bay area will be heating up in the next couple of days. i'll be back with that in just a little bit. back to you. perfect. we'll check back with you in just a moment. 504. right now. turning now to decision 2024. vice president kamala harris headed back to the bay area. she's arriving in san francisco later tonight ahead of a campaign fundraiser planned for tomorrow. but before that, she has a busy day ahead of her. this afternoon, she's visiting the u.s. mexico southern border, where she'll address immigration and border security. the trump campaign calls harris's visit a, quote, political ploy. trump plans to stump across battleground michigan today, where he will tout his economic agenda. today, in the bay's barry jackson joins us live in washington this morning and brie this is all coming as that early

voting is getting underway. that's right. good morning laura. so another busy day on the campaign trail today as vice president, harris will be in arizona, making her second trip to the southern border in four years. good afternoon everyone. foreign affairs are front and center in the race for the white house, as ukraine's president zelenskyy visits the u.s. during his meeting with vice president harris. she warned of the dangers his country could face if former president trump is elected. there are some in my country who would instead force ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory. mr. trump meets with zelenskyy later today. he's been critical of the billions of dollars the u.s. has provided to ukraine, but contends he wants the war to end. i want to save lives. millions of people are dead. millions more than they even think about. and it's not my
5:07 am
fight, but it is a fight to save humanity. the former president is blasting his political opponents strategy on another key issue immigration. kamala harris will be visiting the southern border that she has completely destroyed while at the southern border today. harris plans to highlight trump's role in nixing a bipartisan security bill. he killed a bill that would have actually been a solution because he wants to run on a problem. both candidates are seeking to sway voters in blue wall states. nbc news spoke with some of them. i feel like it's just the kamala harris is like a step in the right, just a step in the right direction, even if it is like a small step. and i mean, trump is not perfect, but at least with his presidency, we know what that would look like. the economy was in a much, much better state. americans are keeping a close eye on where each candidate stands with less than 40 days until election day. and you can find much more from
5:08 am
the deciders focus group on nbc news dot com. meanwhile, early voting is underway in several states, including virginia and illinois, while absentee voting has started in places like michigan. laura, always so much to cover and you do a great job for us. thanks so much, brie. now, while the country is watching the presidential election, the bay area is also paying close attention to the race for san francisco mayor, especially after an intense q&a last night where candidates answered questions about issues that impact the aapi community. the town hall was put on by the asian pacific islander council, a coalition of nonprofits which ensures the community's needs are represented in policies and funding. that event was moderated by our own gia vang and the candidates had 20 minutes each to answer a round of the same questions. so my vision for san francisco. my vision for our aapi community is a city that is safe. a city with clean sidewalks where the mayor is honestly addressing the homeless issue and the fentanyl
5:09 am
issue. i am the only candidate in this race who supports rent control that allows those seniors to age in place. we continue to see crime decline. we're making investments in food security, and we're going to build the housing that we need to ensure that the diverse communities of san francisco have a safe, affordable place to call home. i'm fighting for working and middle class families. that's what i've done. my entire career over the last 24 years. when i am your mayor, my departments are going to be serving you by the way, san francisco uses ranked choice voting, so we may not know on election night who the next mayor will be. 508 right now, authorities so far are not identifying the man and woman shot and killed at a napa apartment complex. it happened yesterday morning at the napa park homes apartments on lincoln avenue. a few hours later, police located the suspect. and that's when he led officers on a
5:10 am
brief chase into kennedy park, at which point officers rammed his car. as you can see in video that was filmed by a bystander, it led to a three hour standoff in the park, which ended when the suspect shot himself. the suspect did survive. police so far not revealing his injuries. a's fans rewriting the first rule of baseball. turns out sometimes there is some crying, especially when your team is walking out on you forever. let's go. oakland. passionate a's fans gave it one last hurrah, giving the team a proper sendoff in their final game yesterday at the coliseum. a's legends dave stewart and rickey henderson threw out the first pitch. a's former pitcher barry zito sang the national anthem and when it ended, yes, there were tears and hugs. the team has one final series. this

season, starting tonight in seattle. now, the coliseum complex has now gone from three tenants five years ago to none. the warriors, the raiders and the a's now all gone. that's supposed to change again next year, when the oakland roots soccer club is committed to playing 17 games there. but the longer term future is less certain. we do know it involves african american sports and entertainment group, which now owns the property and plans to redevelop it to include housing, business and sports and entertainment. but those plans are still in the works. the a's will play the next three seasons in sacramento. at that point, the team moves to or plans to move to vegas, although ballpark financing is still coming into place. a new stadium is planned for the site of the tropicana hotel, where a nighttime implosion is now planned for october 9th, and there are reports the a's will play some kind of role in that event. let's take a peek outside on

this friday morning before the sun's arrival out by the east bay walnut creek this morning, we'll check that commute as it looks like folks are out on the road. we'll check in with mike in just a moment, but cinthia pimentel is in for kerry this morning. looking good this friday. it's looking good. mostly clear behind us as we say hello to the final friday in september. mild 60s down here in san jose, upper 50s through palo alto, as well as out there in dublin where it also looks busy. mike, we're going to check in on that 56 in san francisco. mostly clear start. so as you head out the door this morning, upper 50s and some 60s, some mild start to our friday here. and as you go on into your lunchtime hour, heating up really quickly, some mid to upper 80s in our inland valleys and those seconds will return this afternoon, but we are not done with the heat. as we say hello to october next week i'll talk about all of that coming up in a few minutes. but mike, you're finding the cheapest gas prices to kick off our weekend. we are better than yesterday by a couple of price. yesterday's best is even better now at 412 in the north bay.
5:13 am
that's vacaville at sam's club on helen power drive. the next best is contra costa county. concord has 419 at clayton gas and wash on clayton road. again the city of concord, though, and then the south bay has the same deal in sunnyvale. also. 419 at national petroleum on old san francisco road. you check these prices or check your specific area. gasbuddy.com also help us with those reports on the roadway. happy to report that the traffic, although cinthia saw that volume for 580, no slowing through that area of dublin. we do have slowing coming down through san pablo, exiting there at san pablo dam road. the exit may have some construction. i've circled the construction off the central freeway that just picked up a short time ago. plenty of time to stay clear, but still closed. an overnight crash. a pedestrian was hit northbound 101. there's still closure approaching cotati. surface streets will take you past the scene. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. zillow helping customers prepare for climate change. just ahead on today in the bay. the new feature it's offering this morning, plus a 30 year old bay

5:20 am
23 artists participating and you see glass pumpkins on the ground at the palo alto art center. it's really quite a scene. now, don't forget about the food. there will be food sales by ada's cafe all weekend and the mister softee ice cream truck will also be there saturday. kicking off what is expected to be a beautiful weekend. admission is free and doors open up at 10 a.m. both tomorrow and sunday. very fun. well, kelly clarkson helping to shine a spotlight on a bay area nonprofit helping people impacted by the criminal justice system. the east bay community law center is located in berkeley and the organization provides free legal services to people who cannot afford lawyers. its founder says those in need are often women of color. we are really invested in making sure that your race and your gender do not determine whether you get a fair shake in our legal system. our our

5:22 am
will still be pretty warm. 83 in oakland to 96, in walnut creek. and more of that heat being felt out towards antioch and livermore. i've got you at 96 for today. the peninsula. how about this gorgeous beach day out in half moon bay with some low 70s mid to upper 80s as you move down into redwood city and palo alto. san francisco oh my goodness. spectacular weather for you there too. 78 in the mission, 72 in the marina. and if you're heading up into wine country, we're seeing a warm day with some low 90s through the napa valley. 90 in novato and also some 70s there for point reyes over the next couple of days. the weekend you felt it pretty similar. it has been a comfortable one. and then we get into our workweek and the heat ramps up once again. so watch that 7-day forecast from the 90s today will dip it down for the weekend and then see those mid to upper 90s return by monday and tuesday. possible triple digit temperatures. i'll keep an eye on that. san francisco will be in for some warm days ahead as well. mike, you're tracking a closure in the north bay. what's
5:23 am
going on? this investigation continues. cynthia, folks, there was a crash this morning just after midnight. but the roadway remains closed in the northbound direction, heading up toward to cotati and the great casino out of petaluma. as you have this deadly crash and investigation that continues on northbound 101, i expect the coroner to be here by now, but we have had no update. surface streets will take you around this, a light traffic in that direction. and in fact, all directions, as it's early in the commute for the north bay as we look at the rest of your bill, we still have that slowing around san pablo avenue exit there. there's overnight construction for the off ramp, no problems for the bay bridge, and everywhere south there's great driving out of contra costa county, vasco roads, basically at your minimum. back to you. looks good. thanks, mik. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. it's a high stakes game of chicken and families like yours are caught in the middle. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we are digging into the state's home insurance crisis and looking at some

menopause affects millions of women and impacts lost wages, upended careers, family disruptions and emotional distress. the film's executive producer says every doctor should see it. it's become a continuing medical education credit program, so a cme for physicians. so if a physician watches this film, the 90 minute version of it that we have, they will get a credit towards the renewal of their medical license. now the event included a display of products meant to ease women through menopause, including herbal remedies and raw silk blankets which keep someone warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. the film will debut on october 18th. coming up next, the top stories we're following for you today, including tracking your weekend forecast as you make those plan. ai kris sanchez is at sfo. guess who else is going to be at sfo

weekend 76, in san francisco, 70 half moon bay. it gets warmer of course, as we move into the east bay and the south bay, some 83 degrees in oakland to 94 in morgan hill. i am tracking more heat ahead as we go on into october next week. i'll be back with those details. but mike, a couple of east bay crashes already. oh man, you guys going to be popping up all morning. all right, let's take you out to the roadways where it's not quite so scary. things are moving pretty smoothly on the roadways here. the el portal construction and closure are slowing. has cleared as the crew cleared from the area. let me take you to where there are two crashes over there in contra costa county, northbound on 242. that's opposite your commute, not presenting much of an issue. the crash now on the shoulder, you see brake tapping past the scene. south 680 is just fine coming off the corner there with highway four and highway four. a nice easy drive out of antioch in toward pittsburgh and bay point. there is a crash on the peninsula palo alto, where the sign is there. it's actually at the embarcadero exit, so the off ramp may be closed for just a

couple of minutes. back over to you guys. thank you very much. well, to decision 2024 americans will choose their next president a little more than five weeks from now. and tonight, vice president kamala harris returns to her roots with a visit to the bay area. but she's making a key campaign stop along the way. today in the bay's kris sanchez is live at sfo and kris, the vice president, hoping this trip can drum up support both politically and financially. right. she is trying to get her message out, but she's also trying to fill those campaign coffers because there are some key battleground states that are still very much in play. so the vice president will be making several campaign stops, but also several fundraising stops. one of them here in the bay area. harris is expected to stop first. however, earlier today at the arizona us border, she expected to talk about the flow of fentanyl along with issues of immigration and border security. we know that the gop candidate
5:35 am
has been hammering on those issues. now, by tonight, harris will be in san francisco and will attend a fundraiser. tickets for that one run between $500 to more than $2,800. now while the vice president has gained traction in the polls in the last couple of weeks, the numbers are still within the margin of error. and in this particular election, our political analyst says we may not know who wins right up until election day. we typically see as we get to this point in the campaign, a candidate breaking free. something happens and suddenly a candidate is up by five, six, eight points. we have not seen that yet. we may not see it. now we are very blue here in the bay area, so it won't be a surprise that harris raises money. but that money will help in the battleground states where things are a little bit tighter. so any money
5:36 am
collected here will be spent elsewhere. at sfo, kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. thanks for the latest, kris. so many to watch. so much to watch out for now. fremont police are searching for the gunman in a deadly shooting. it happened at about 5 p.m. yesterday on grimmer boulevard. a man died at the scene. he has not yet been identified. now, anyone with information is asked to call fremont pd. heartbroken fans trying to make this one last. as in one last, take me out to the ball game for one last time against the texas rangers and one last spectacular play from jj bleday and one last win when the closer mason miller induced the final out at oakland coliseum. fans yesterday tried to make sense of what they always believed would never happen. it's sinking in now. it's a bittersweet, you know,
5:37 am
feeling, knowing that we're able to make it for the game. but it's not going to happen again. it's been a family affair and to, you know, bring our boys here on the last day is a special moment, very special. some fans also some scooping up cups of dirt in the field, taking a little piece of history with them. the a's yesterday entertained their largest crowd of the season, more than 46,000. for a lot of fans, it was actually hard to say goodbye. many gathered after the game for what they called a wake. it happened at line 51 brewing near jack london square. the event gave fans a chance to share fond memories and some of the lingering bitterness, as well as the a's prepare to leave town gave some of the youngest fans a good look at the bonds that will no longer be. we were thinking like we got to have an after party. we got to have a wake. we need somewhere to go so people don't have to go home and sit there. after experiencing what we just had to experience. it's just great that we're all
5:38 am
together at the moment and that we can just like, like feel connected with our feelings. good for you, george brown. organizers plan to head telling us they realize weeks ago something like this would be needed to celebrate an end of an era. 537 for you on this friday morning, happening tomorrow, a milestone in the east bay, the east bay regional park district turns 90. and to celebrate, the district will host a picnic at the historic redwood bowl picnic area in oakland. there will be live music, games and a new historical exhibit for attendees to enjoy. that event kicks off at 10 a.m. now cinthia pimentel is tracking how the forecast is shaping up for the event. good news for people who want to go out. good news if you like some really sunny and hot temperatures for your picnic. we should get out there. if you don't before noon hits, that's when we're going to get into those 80s and then into the afternoon. it might be too hot.
5:39 am
some of that food might start to melt and you might get too hot. so just make sure you drink a lot of water. our weekend is here. cheers to you. if you're going up into napa to kick it off, we are also seeing a day where those sun hats and those summer dresses could still be worn as we track temperatures there into the afternoon in the low 90s. maybe we wrap up our workweek in san francisco, cardinals and giants tonight. i think the first pitch looks beautiful there. temperatures in the upper 60s by the water and then into the afternoon. some light winds and also in some 60s. so a light layer as you go out and celebrate the game this weekend, let's take it on over to the east bay. we have the walnut creek oktoberfest as we get ready for october. also looking like a spectacular weather there in the mid 80s. remember to also hydrate with lots of water. we're going to wrap up our weekend down here in the south bay. santa clara patriots and 49ers sunday at levi's stadium. tailgating is looking very warm and into the afternoon. also could be a little too hot. so remember to
5:40 am
bring those hats and keep yourself nice and cool out there. there is so much more coming ahead as we go on into the first couple of days of october, i'll have a look at the full microclimate forecast in a little bit. but mike, you want to tell people about an alert in the north bay? yeah, this continues and it's not heavily traveled right now, but it is starting to show some backup folks traveling north out of petaluma and up toward cotati and immediately graton casinos, just up in the area as well. there was an overnight deadly crash just after midnight. so five hours later, they still have the freeway closed. as crews are arriving for the investigation, a tow truck needs to arrive and i haven't gotten an update about the coroner. there was a pedestrian involved in an investigation getting more details. that's northbound. you can use stoney point, or you can use old redwood highway to get past the scene. locals will know that as you continue to follow that again in the northbound direction. the bulk of the commute heading south, though out of the area and novato. no problems getting over there. a little slowing for highway 37 and the earlier slowing down the east shore freeway all cleared from richmond over by el portal.
5:41 am
a little build at the bay bridge, mostly the incline and no big surprises. friday is looking pretty good. the two crashes over there just outside of concord. not presenting a problem for 242 or highway four. a note the giants are playing in town tonight, so there's a 715 game. more traffic coming in off the 280 extension and weekend work between san mateo and santa clara counties, right in the area where right now there's a crash at the embarcadero offramp. back to you. thanks, mike. we'll check back in. well, honoring a fitness leader taken down by a dreaded disease. first. it's heartbreaking because it's something that it's not supposed to happen like thi. just ahead on today in the bay. tomorrow, a special fundraiser for a man whose fitness vision revolutionized gyms and home exercise rooms everywhere. and fright fest is underway at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo. coming up, we'll take you behind the front desk and show you what's so scary about some of their haunted mazes and how you can see the attractions.
5:42 am
so scary. i'm going to watch out for that, tom. and it's friday, meaning another edition of our school shout out series. hello, bay area, this is mrs. mahesh, our third grade stratford pleasanton lions have a message for you. good morning, bay area and good morning, pleasanton lions. have a great friday. don't forget you can send us your school shout out by emailing school shout out at nbc uni dot com. we'll be right back

hi, i'm greg. i live in bloomington, illinois. i'm not an actor. i'm just a regular person. some people say, "why should i take prevagen? i don't have a problem with my memory." memory loss is, is not something that occurs overnight. i started noticing subtle lapses in memory. i want people to know that prevagen has worked for me. it's helped my memory. it's helped my cognitive qualities. give it a try. i want it to help you just like it has helped me. prevagen. at stores everywhere without a prescription.
5:45 am
morning. one more day. you're almost to the weekend. we start off in the upper 50s and a mostly clear start, and will be warming up quickly as we go on into the ten 11:00 hour. by your lunch time, 84 degrees and more heat into the afternoon. we'll talk about the full microclimate forecast coming up. and it is friday. we are seeing a lighter volume of traffic, but earlier slowing is now starting to early. slowing is starting to develop in the contra costa county area. this crash on 242 i just learned a few more details. there are some complications. in east bay, jim taking part tomorrow in a first ever nationwide fundraiser to honor a leader in fitness who lost his 18 year battle with als. augie nieto died last year. he'll be
5:46 am
remembered as a fitness leader who brought life cycle and life fitness equipment into gyms and homes around the world. als is a degenerative condition also known as lou gehrig's disease. it has no cure. but tomorrow lifetime quest in walnut creek will take part in augie's quest to cure als. it's a national effort to raise money for research through a 90 minute workout. organizers say the workout time is symbolic because someone in the u.s. is diagnosed with als every 90 minutes. i think the one thing that really stood out to me was that there's no they don't know why. they don't know why people get it. they don't know how to. there isn't a cure for it yet. so it's essentially, it's fatal, like 100% when you are diagnosed. well, two workout sessions are scheduled for eight and 10 a.m. at lifetime walnut creek at broadway plaza. and you don't even have to be a club member, but it includes a $25 donation.

over the next couple of days. we've got some mid to upper 90s for today out there in cocoa county. we'll drop it down a little bit for the weekend. that looks nice and comfortable, but still very warm. remember to drink lots of water and use that sunscreen. it might have been put aside after the summer was over, but we still need it. as we go on into the next couple of days, we start to bring that heat right there for monday. our last day of september october off to a hot start as we track some areas into the triple digits. now, as we go on into the rest of the week, i don't see much relief arriving until we get into the second half, but still, that looks pretty toasty out there in antioch with some upper 80s and some 90s san francisco and our inner bay will also get some warm weather as we go on into the next couple of days. for today, we will enjoy a mild one there in the city and then go into the weekend bringing it down a little bit. but those bay temperatures could go into the 80s and 90s as we go on into next week. a little bit cooler with that relief and that wind returning by late week. now our inland valleys will see a
