tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  September 27, 2024 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
downgraded to a tropical storm overnight, but the threat remains. we're live in florida with a look at the life threatening storm surge left behind. plus, vice president harris set to return to the bay area, but before that, she's heading to the border for the first time in more than three years. we're in washington with the targeted attacks from former president trump. plus, they said goodbye with one last win at home. so what comes next for the a's now that they've played their last game in oakland? an update on what lies ahead for the team. this is today in the bay and a good friday morning to you. i'm ginger conejero saab filling in for marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we do begin with that breaking news overnight. helene weakened to a tropical storm. we have a live look in north carolina as that storm is
6:01 am
approaching. helene made landfall last night as a category four along florida's big bend. last night, the storm being blamed for at least five deaths across florida, georgia and now north carolina. this morning, the national hurricane center is urging people to stay away from windows, calling the situation dangerous and life threatening. and at this hour, thousands remain without power. today, in the bay's jay gray is live in tallahassee with a look at just some of the damage. and jay helene really left behind a path of destruction. yeah yeah. ginger. laura. really a mess here and now, with the sun up and folks getting out and especially those response teams, we're learning a little more about the damage here. as is often the case, really, most often the case with these tropical systems, it's the water doing the most damage. we've seen that along the coastline with some flooding from the storm surge and then inland in
6:02 am
areas where it's rained more than 12in, you've got that flash flooding that's become an issue and water getting into places. it's not supposed to be. you know, even in areas like pasco county, where 19 draws the line, highway 19 across this area, 60 to 65 overnight high water rescues. and then you had other water rescues in other areas. so that will give you an idea of how busy it's been and how dangerous and how devastating this storm has been as it moved through. let's talk a little bit about the numbers right now. more than a million people in florida without power. the good news is it's a nice day. so these crews can get in and get to work and try and restore some of that. we know in georgia where the storm is pushing through right now, more than 800,000 are without power. expect that number to go up. and then even in south carolina now we're getting reports of 500,000 without power. and that's just going to continue to build. and it's really a testimony to the
6:03 am
strength, the intensity, the staying power of this storm. it's been downgraded to a tropical storm. but that's still 70 mile an hour winds or so. and then you've got the rain, which is really going to be the significant problem moving forward. i think we're going to see a lot of flooding in the carolinas, especially tennessee, kentucky. they're going to get hit as well. as this storm continues through the weekend. so you've got to clean up starting in areas like this where helena's already been trying to restore some of the power and repair some of the problems. but all that going on while you've got this storm still wreaking havoc as it pushes through the southeast. this was a storm that really was in many ways historic. it was the strongest storm to ever make landfall in the big bend area of florida, and that's significant because that's a really a highway for a lot of these hurricanes to move into the panhandle. there have been three, including helene, that have made their way through that area in just the last 13 months.
6:04 am
and then just the magnitude and the wind field, the footprint of this storm 500 miles or so across, that's a massive system and not done yet, unfortunately, ladies. and the path of destruction, as you've spoken about, really, it's a little deceiving now that it's been downgraded to a tropical storm, but it's still leaving that path as it continues to move through. jay thank you so much for your reporting. yeah. and you just see the size of it too. and let's head over to cynthia right now. you've been really tracking this storm as well overnight. it's just tragic for the people that are there. yeah yesterday we were watching those outer rain bands just starting to push on through, give people just a little taste of what was happening. and right now, in our satellite and radar loop, i wanted to show you, as that storm kind of got a little bit of that tighter form to it. it was increasing those wind speeds 100 mile an hour plus as it made that landfall in perry, florida. we're getting some notes now.
6:05 am
that is the first category four that has moved through that area, intensifying rapidly. and still those impacts being felt wide as we move in through atlanta, there, the carolinas, and then it's kind of going to wrap itself, which is a little rare, but it's going to wrap itself as we go through the weekend through the tennessee and ohio valley areas. so if you have any family out there, i checked in with my friends that live just a little bit northeast of atlanta. they still haven't gotten back to me yet, so i hope that's okay. the things that we're going to keep watching, of course, in those areas, are the flooding and those gusty winds. the potential for some power outages, landslides in our climate. note this weather from my folks over on the nbc news station in new york. we're also watching the possibility of some dams being impacted by all of this heavy rain just pushing in really quickly. next, it will be downgraded to a tropical depression as we go on into more of the weekend, but still some areas to watch. tennessee, kentucky, those friends and
6:06 am
family out there. so i'll be watching that. and of course, our local weather in a few minutes, but i'll send it back to you guys. thank you for that, cynthia. now, authorities. so far are not identifying the man and woman shot and killed at a napa apartment complex. it happened yesterday morning at the napa park home apartments on lincoln avenue. a few hours later, police located the suspect. that's when he led officers on a brief chase into kennedy park, at which point officers rammed his car. as you can see right there in a video that was filmed by the by a bystander now, it led to a three hour standoff in the park, which ended when the suspect shot himself. the suspect did not survive. police so far are not revealing his injuries. turning now to decision 2024. vice president kamala harris headed back to the bay area. she's arriving in san francisco later tonight ahead of a campaign fundraiser planned for tomorrow. but before that, she has a busy day ahead of her. this afternoon, she is visiting the u.s. mexico border, where she'll
6:07 am
address immigration and border security. the trump campaign calls harris's visit a, quote, political ploy. trump plans to stump across battleground michigan today, where he'll tout his economic agenda. here's today in the bay brie jackson in washington with more. another busy day on the campaign trail today as vice president, harris visits arizona to make her second trip to the southern border in four years. good afternoon everyone. foreign affairs are front and center in the race for the white house, as ukraine's president zelensky visits the u.s. during his meeting with vice president harris. she warned of the dangers his country could face if former president trump is elected. there are some in my country who would instead force ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory. mr. trump meets with zelensky later today. he's been critical of the billions of dollars the u.s. has provided to ukraine, but
6:08 am
contends he wants the war to end. i want to save lives. millions of people are dead. millions more than they even think about. and it's not my fight, but it is a fight to save humanity. the former president is blasting his political opponent's strategy on another key issue immigration. kamala harris will be visiting the southern border that she has completely destroyed while at the southern border today. harris plans to highlight trump's role in nixing a bipartisan security bill. he killed a bill that would have actually been a solution because he wants to run on a problem. both candidates are seeking to sway voters in blue wall states. nbc news spoke with some of them. i feel like it's just the kamala harris is like a step in the right, just a step in the right direction. even if it is like a small step. and i mean, trump is not perfect, but at least with his presidency, we know what that would look like.
6:09 am
the economy was in a much, much better state. americans are keeping a close eye on where each candidate stands with less than 40 days until election day, and you can find much more from the deciders focus group on nbcnews.com. meanwhile, early voting is underway in several states, including virginia and illinois, while absentee voting has started in places like michigan. in washington. brie jackson, nbc news. thanks a lot, brie. now, while the country is watching the presidential election, the bay area is also paying close attention to the race for san francisco mayor, especially after an intense q&a last night where candidates answered questions about issues that impact the aapi community. that town hall was put on by an by the asian pacific islander council. it's a coalition of nonprofits which ensures the community's needs are represented in policies and funding. the event was moderated by our own gia vang, and candidates had 20 minutes each to answer a round of the same
6:10 am
questions. so my vision for san francisco. my vision for our aapi community is a city that is safe. a city with clean sidewalks where the mayor is honestly addressing the homeless issue and the fentanyl issue. i am the only candidate in this race who supports rent control that allows those seniors to age in place. we continue to see crime decline. we're making investments in food security, and we're going to build the housing that we need to ensure that the diverse communities of san francisco have a safe, affordable place to call home. i'm fighting for working and middle class families. that's what i've done my entire career over the last 24 years. when i am your mayor, my departments are going to be serving you. now, san francisco uses ranked choice voting, so we may not know on election night who the next mayor will be. and we're hosting a debate next week. sam liccardo and evan lowe are the
6:11 am
two candidates vying for the 16th congressional district. they're going to debate right here in our nbc bay area studios. that's on wednesday, october 2nd at 7 p.m. you can go to nbcbayarea.com slash district 16 debate to find out how to watch it. if you're not at home. a live look at oakland coliseum a's fans rewriting the first rule of baseball. turns out sometimes there is some crying, especially when your team is walking out on you forever. let's go. oakland. passionate a's fans yesterday gave it one last hurrah, giving the team a proper sendoff in the final game at the coliseum. a's legends dave stewart and rickey henderson throwing out the first pitch, and a's former pitcher barry zito singing the national anthem. and when it ended, yes, there were tears and hugs. the team has one final series this
6:12 am
season, starting tonight in seattle. the coliseum complex has now gone from three tenants five years ago to none. the warriors, the raiders and the a's are all gone. that's supposed to change again next year when the oakland roots soccer club is committed to playing 17 games there. but the longer term future is less certain. we know it involves the african american sports and entertainment group, which now owns the property and plans to redevelop it into housing and business and sports and entertainment, but those plans are still in the works. the a's will play the next three seasons in sacramento. at that point, the team plans to move to las vegas, although ballpark financing is still coming into place. the new stadium is planned for the site of the tropicana hotel, where a nighttime implosion is now planned for october 9th. there are reports the a's will play some kind of role in that event. heading south. taking a live look at san jose this morning.
6:13 am
some rainbow lights there in the distance. cinthia pimentel is in for kari this morning. are we approaching a nice weekend? i think we are. laura. good morning. good morning everyone. and i walked out the door down here in the south bay without a sweater. so that tells you we are off to a mild start. 60 down here in san jose, mainly upper 50s through the bay. 57 in concord. but some cooler spots. a light layer this morning. 48 in novato, 45, in half moon bay. but as we go through the day, don't worry, there is lots of sunshine and we'll feel temperatures warmer than what we had yesterday. the weekend will also carry us through a little bit cooler. overall, just comfortable. beautiful bay area weather for you, but it wouldn't be the bay area if we didn't talk about some fire concerns. and more heat coming as we go on into october. so i'll tell you what areas i'm watching with that coming up in a few minutes. but it's the weekend and mike is helping you get around with some cheaper gas prices this morning. where are they? you have to fill up for the weekend, so let's check the yesterday's best. it
6:14 am
was a great there in the north bay. it's even better today. 419 in vacaville, sam's club on helen power drive. same location we talked about yesterday. better price. the best in contra costa county is in concord. they have 419 at clayton gas and wash on clayton road. again the city of concord on the road called clayton. and then in the south bay. it's the same deal in sunnyvale as in clayton. we are in concord. we have 419 at national petroleum on old san francisco road. that's the third number here. and at the bottom we're talking about gasbuddy.com, where you can receive those price updates wherever you are in the state of california. as we look at the roadways, we're looking at a pretty typical friday. we don't have a major issue we have slowing across the bay bridge more in toward the city. so they may slow those metering lights down a little bit. typical for the north bay highway 37. highway four, and this crash north to 42, not presenting a problem southbound has the build. back to you. thanks a lo, mike. hackers targeting some of the hottest concert tickets coming up next. we're going to hear exclusively from a ticketmaster executive who's

for the very first time. and although it's live, each episode of the iconic tv show comes with a lot of preparation. on wednesday, smart and cast members read through 39 potential sketches for tomorrow's premiere. it's something even this veteran actress says can be hard to keep up with. i had to just kind of guess what was going on in the script. it was great. and then they narrow it down to about 10 or 12, and then it will be narrowed down even more by saturday. and if you're doing the math, tomorrow marks snl's 969th episode. wow. congratulations to them. now you can watch the premiere of snl's 50th season tomorrow night right here at 8:30 p.m. in addition to smart jelly roll will serve as the show's musical guest. all right. always a fun night on saturday night. all right. but right now, we're just easing into the weekend with a good friday morning. friday, as we like to call it. and i'm

bringing the sunshine for everybody. that's my end of the week gift to you. thank you. oh you're welcome. i want to come back on monday. okay. sounds good. just kidding. that's my day off. discovery bay. good morning to you. lots of sunshine throughout the board, and temperatures are going to warm up very quickly after we get into our lunchtime hour into some mid 90s there. so prepare. let's check in on everybody else. if you didn't grab a sweater this morning, don't worry, you don't need it. our lunchtime hour is showing some mid 80s for the north bay as well down into the south bay and the peninsula. also in for a gorgeous lunchtime hour into this afternoon and maybe that chance of getting out of work early could be a good deal. and possibly looking for some friends with a pool as we go on into our weekend here, we are going to see our highs in the 90s for the north bay. some mid 90s up there for livermore, concord and down into some warmer spots. 97 in gilroy. look at up and down the peninsula 70s even 70 out in half moon bay. that looks gorgeous and we will
6:23 am
keep this trend going. temperatures come down just a little bit and giving us a comfortable weekend ahead, but watch there and something to prepare in your downtime this weekend. there is more heat ahead and some concerns for some fire weather. let me show you up there in the north bay, which is the area that i'm watching over the next couple of days. we see the 90s over the next couple of days, but then we bring up that heat as we go on into monday. tuesday, first day of october, some low one, hundreds. and that could bring about with the high pressure and how it sets up the wind directions, some offshore winds. so we don't like hearing offshore winds because it brings in that drier weather from our land. and that could be not only a north bay problem, but also for the east bay. that will be an area to watch through the santa cruz mountains, along with those warm temperatures that will be having over the next couple of days. so our inland 70 forecast goes like this. the heat will return for today, but then level out for the weekend. lots of sunshine, lots of heat ahead. so remember to drink lots of water. maybe cut back on
6:24 am
those outdoor plans a little bit. i see some relief arriving as we go on into the second half of the week. san francisco and our bays will also see some warm days ahead 70 some upper 60s there by the coast in san francisco. but then some 80s are possible there as we get on into next week. mike, you're looking at a continued closure for the north bay, where the one issue over here continues since 1230 last night or this morning, we have the closure of northbound 101 heading out of petaluma. and up in toward cotati and rohnert park. deadly crash happened there overnight involving a pedestrian. still have the investigation that continues. outside of that, everything else is looking like a friday with lighter traffic back to you. thanks a lot, mike. a 30 year old bay area tradition is back. up next on today in the bay we'll tell you about how you can get one of these beautiful glass pumpkins this weekend. stay with us

and the end of an era. fans say farewell to the beloved oakland a's. this is today in the bay. good friday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington. it is that friday for basically at the weekend, right. as we'd like to think. let's get a look at what that weekend forecast is going to look like with cinthia pimentel and it's our final friday in september at that. hi ginger and laura. we are looking out towards dublin sunrise starting to come in over the hills. we wait for it just a couple of minutes before 7:00. as we go through and look at our highs for today, it will be warmer. we are looking at some mid to upper 90s in our valleys. the bay side also looks very comfortable and warm and we'll bring it down just a little bit for saturday, but still keep it at a spectacular weekend ahead. as we
6:33 am
wrap up the month, i am looking at more heat that will be on the way as we welcome october, as well as some weekend events to make your plans. i'll be back with that in a few minutes. back to you. thank you very much. two decision 2024 americans will choose their next president a little more than five weeks from now. and tonight, vice president kamala harris returns to her roots with a visit to the bay area. but she's making a key campaign stop along the way. today in the bay's kris sanchez is live at sfo. and kris, the vice president, hoping this trip can drum up support both politically and financially. rai she's still trying to get her positions out there and trying to make her case on things like immigration, and that's the reason why she's going to be headed to the southern border between mexico and the u.s. in arizona. that will be one of her campaign stops today. she will leave washington, d.c, in just about two hours or so. she is expected to discuss the flow of fentanyl, along with issues of immigration and border security. when she is in arizona. by
6:34 am
tonight, harris will be in san francisco for another fundraiser. not a lot of public details at this point, but we can tell you that donors who are going are paying between $500 to more than $2,800, while the vice president has gained traction in the polls, the numbers are still close to the margin of error. so at this point in this particular election, our political analyst says we may not know who wins until election day. we typically see as we get to this point in the campaign, a candidate breaking free. something happens and suddenly a candidate is up by five, six, eight points. we have not seen that yet. we may not see it. so yet one more thing that's unconventional in this election. by the way, this is the second fundraiser that the vice president has had here in the bay area. last time she raked in 13,000, not thousand,
6:35 am
$13 million. and that money will be critical for winning in those battleground states. at sfo, kris sanchez today in the bay, every move critical in those battleground states. thanks, kris. 634 right now we're following breaking news. british actress dame maggie smith has died. throughout the course of her career, she won several awards for her performances, including two oscars. she became known to many audiences through her roles in the harry potter film series and the popular downton abbey. smith also won the tony award for best actress in 1990. that same year, she was made a dame by queen elizabeth. her publicist confirmed smith died at 89 years old. no word on a cause of her death, but quite the talented actress. very much so. and 635 now on this friday, fremont police are searching for

6:39 am
there up in mill valley. we are going to warm up this morning going into the mid low 70s by lunchtime and then into the afternoon. it could get a little bit warm, but with that breeze right there near to the ocean that just also looks like a wonderful friday ahead. you know what else is happening down here in the south bay? it's the grand opening of the spinner farms down there in morgan hill. it's been coming up a lot on my socials. if you've seen it, it's the place with the giant dinosaurs and just some gorgeous pumpkins out there. but it's not quite pumpkin season yet. i am looking at a very warm day there in morgan hill, so either get there really early once it opens at 9:00 or later on into the afternoon. as we go on and talk about the rest of our weekend, we are going to sum it up here sunday. patriots and niners at levi's stadium. it will be a warm day. people heading there to tailgate early and into the afternoon. still looking like gorgeous bay area weather. so i hope the weather gives the team a win this weekend. we'll be tracking that of course. mike, let's go over to you. and you
6:40 am
want to start with alert. that's cleared. where. yeah. this is the one that was in cotati. an overnight deadly crash happened on northbound 101. had lanes blocked, all lanes blocked for about six hours. they've just released all traffic northbound out of petaluma and into cotati. meanwhile, on our maps, this portion of the north bay shows a little slowing. south 101 in through novato. pretty typical even on a friday, with the traffic feeding over on highway 37 as well. nothing really surprising about this map slowing across the richmond ridge and the bay bridge. getting into san francisco. looking ahead, we'll note tonight that the giants are playing. they're starting their series over at oracle park. so 715 game that will bring more congestion. 280 extension king street and across the bridge. remember caltrain takes you just blocks away from that. that's a great option. the rest of the bay shows a smooth friday a typical build for friday lighter and later for the south bay, for example. and then note for bart over the weekend starting tonight, in fact, they'll do fiber work, so there will be restricted access for trains through dublin late night and early morning. back to you.
6:41 am
thanks, mike. well, we continue to follow breaking news on the storm battering georgia and florida right now. millions are without power. coming up next, new video of the hardest hit area. it's a high stakes game of chicken, and families like yours are caught in the middle. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we are digging into the state's home insurance crisis and looking at some possible help on the horizon. next plus, we'll show you some of the scary animals that you can come out and meet here at fright fest at six flags, including 49 year old lautrec. you're watching today in the bay
