thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm terry mcsweeney. gia has the night off. vice president kamala harris back home in the bay area today for what will likely be her final visit before election day, which is now just 38 days away. the vice president spoke at a fundraiser at the palace of fine arts in san francisco. tickets for the event on the pricey side, ranging from $500 to $900,000 for a table of four. during her speech, harris called the upcoming election, quote, one of the most important elections in the lifetime of our nation. we spoke with two bay area voters in attendance. they both told us they were interested in what the vice president had to say about her economic policies. and i thought that was encouraging. and i also appreciated that she actually is really focused on making sure that there's representation for working people and middle class and better, stuff for seniors as

well. a better economy. well, tonight, harris is in los angeles and will attend more campaign events tomorrow. her husband, second gentleman doug emhoff, set to be on the peninsula tomorrow, expected to speak at a campaign event in menlo park. former president donald trump was also on the campaign trail today. he spoke to supporters in wisconsin making negative comments about the vice president's mental acuity. he also criticized the biden-harris administration's border policies. a day after harris visited the southern border, what kamala harris has done to our border is a betrayal of every citizen. not only must she be defeated, but in light of this news, kamala harris should immediately resign. the vice presidency and go home to california in disgrace. mr. trump ended his night at the tuscaloosa in tuscaloosa, where he watched the alabama crimson tide play the georgia bulldogs. video shows him watching the game from a box seat. supporters

say his visit helped bring more attention to the team's. san francisco's mayoral candidates are on the campaign trail this weekend as well. four of the top five candidates spoke to voters in the city's mission district today. the forum focused on the issues that impact the latino community as voters decide who they will cast their ballots for in november. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. in the mission district this morning, the stage was set as the san francisco latino parity and equity coalition hosted a mayoral candidate forum. it's the first time that we're convening to have a real conversations with the candidates and really try to get them to understand the priorities and needs of the latino community. of the 14 people running for mayor, nine participated. today, the candidates were broken up into two groups. the first included mayor london breed, daniel lurie, supervisor ahsha safai and board of supervisors president aaron peskin answering questions on a range of topics including housing, community safety, nonprofits and workforce

concerns, wages, benefits and job protections for latinx workers in these fields. and how will you support the economic growth of these communities? i think unionizing is the path. i worked as the political director for the janitors union for almost a decade. every single time we have the opportunity to work with whatever industry it is, whether it's in home health care, whether it's people that are providing care for our children, whether it's construction, every opportunity we have, we need to work to help those those industries unionize. we also have to protect industries like free city college, free city college is a i am really proud of the work that we've done over the years, particularly with our former workforce director, joshua arce, where we develop sustainable programs like city drive, city emt and other opportunities that help provide people a real career pathway. i agree with a couple of the things that have just been brought up around free

city college. we need to protect that. we need to make sure baby. prop c is spent to take care of our families and our young people. i also want to talk about muni and making sure that it is clean. it is safe. it's reliable. i have worked to create the office of labor standards enforcement with my colleagues on the board of supervisors to deal with wage theft, and i have given that department the tools and the funding that it needs to make sure that there is equitable pay in san francisco. former mayor mark farrell's campaign spokesperson said he was attending his daughter's family weekend event at her college and is hosting office hours in the mission to meet with voters in the coming weeks. but earlier this week, farrell shared his vision at a forum addressing issues impacting the aapi community. so my vision for san francisco, my vision for our aapi community, is a city that is safe, a city with clean sidewalks where the mayor is

honestly addressing the homeless issue and the fentanyl issue. messages for san francisco voters to consider when they head to the polls on november 5th in san francisco. christie smith, nbc bay area news. now, earlier this week, our own gia vang moderated a town hall with the top five san francisco mayoral candidates to talk about how they address issues that directly impact the asian pacific islander community. you can watch what each candidate had to say about that on our website. just head to nbcbayarea.com and click on sf mayoral forum in the trending bar. a warning from pg&e tonight. rising temperatures could lead to power shutoffs next week. utility says the shutoffs could happen monday and tuesday because of high winds and dry conditions. more than 13,000 customers in 13 counties could be impacted, including alameda, contra costa, napa and sonoma. the goal of the shutoffs is to prevent equipment from possibly sparking a wildfire. let's talk about those dry conditions and the heat on our way. here's rob mayeda. yeah,

and those breezes really confined to the ridgelines around the bay area. the valleys will not be seeing those winds. but right now what we've got is the entire opposite part of that pattern. the fog and the sea breeze ongoing, as you see here. temperatures really drop to start the weekend. right now, 50s and 60s around the bay area, about 15 to more than 20 degrees cooler than the same time yesterday. and what's driving that, obviously, is the low clouds, which is the coolant to the ocean air conditioning and the strong onshore wind. now, by tomorrow night, we begin to see those same winds change direction. this is the dry offshore pattern. as those arrows point out of the northeast, it will be the higher peaks of the north bay diablo range, and maybe around the santa cruz mountains. we'll get some of those dry breezes. this is as high pressure builds in. we're going to go from this mild weekend to some very hot temperatures, setting up monday through wednesday. and what's different this time around is some bayside communities could easily be in the 90s, including san francisco and oakland, and maybe even close to 100 degrees bayside by tuesday. we'll talk more about these likely heat

advisories and heat warnings ahead, as we head back into the week. coming up in our full forecast in about ten minutes. thank you very much. and don't forget, you can track the heat while you're on the go by downloading our free nbc bay area app. just scan that qr code on your screen right there. it will take you straight to our weather page. five suspects. but just one arrest. tonight comes after a group of burglars smashed into a novato store, then made off with carloads of stolen goods. this happened early this morning at a store on diablo avenue. burglars drove a car through the front of the store, stole merchandise, took off in two separate cars. one car managed to get away. police chased the other until it crashed in richmond. officers arrested the driver who tried to run off. the search is on tonight for a gunman. after a deadly shooting on the peninsula happened just before 11 last night in redwood city on el camino real, off of lincoln avenue. police say the victim was dropped off to a hospital before officers could get to the scene, but the victim died. so far, no arrests have been made.

a shooting in san francisco's mission district this afternoon. this is citizen app. video of the incident. police say officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area of mission and guttenberg streets, about two in the afternoon. a man was found suffering from gunshot wounds taken to the hospital, and he is expected to be okay. police are asking anyone with information to please come forward. they have yet to make an arrest or to name a suspect. a very different kind of smash and grab in san francisco. this one involves an ambulance and a paramedic injured in the attack. it happened around ten last night at zuckerberg general. police say they arrested a person who ransacked an ambulance and stole equipment from the vehicle, then began breaking windows. that injured paramedic, by the way, was treated at the hospital and released. there were seven ambulances on site at the time of the attack, and police say swift action by medics and emts prevented additional injuries and damage to other vehicles. our ambulances do not have the safety of a firehouse to go back to, so they have to be ever

vigilant. sometimes when they're at the hospitals, we let our guard down a little bit because we're tending to the patient as we remove them safely from the ambulance. the suspect was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment before being released to police. the stolen equipment was returned. all roads are back open again in west santa rosa after a hazmat spill. there happened 11 this morning on north dutton avenue. firefighters say several large containers fell off of a truck and spilled 275 gallons of liquid onto the road. the santa rosa press democrat says it was diesel fuel that spilled. several roads were closed while crews cleaned up. the roads reopened about three hours later. the incident is under investigation. governor newsom vetoed a bill today that would have required new cars sold in california to alert drivers if they went ten miles or more over the speed limit. the bill was written by state senator scott wiener. wiener was in san francisco yesterday on a busy street that has seen four deadly crashes in the past two years. he says the bill would have led

to fewer deaths. now, in his veto message, newsom said federal law already dictates vehicle safety standards and adding special rules for california would create too many regulations. he added that the ntsb is actively evaluating intelligent speed assistance systems, and that bill risks disrupting that work. a major san francisco streetcar line that runs the length of the city returned to service today after a five year hiatus. the l taraval muni metro line runs underground from the embarcadero through the twin peaks tunnel. it surfaces on taraval street and ends up at the san francisco zoo. the train has been out of service since 2019, as the city worked to repair that line, and they did a lot of work. crews replaced two miles of track. the overhead wires that power the train made several improvements to the street as well. city leaders say the project was the first substantial rebuild in nearly 50 years. and passengers say they're just happy that it's back. i'm super excited. we actually just moved here a

he was known as a grandfather of american judo. today, his family held a private memorial. fuchida's judo journey began when he was ten years old. at the urging of his mother. he started studying the sport in the 40s while a student at san jose state. the athletic director asked him to coach judo after an interruption, which included fighting in world war two, which helped establish judo as a competitive sport in the united states. in 1964, he led the first u.s. judo team to the olympics in tokyo. in the decades that followed, san jose state became a powerhouse. under uchida's leadership, the legacy he leaves behind is that he leaves every single door open as possible. and i think his, his charity to all other organizations, including of how much he cares about the alumni even after they graduate, he's still out there reaching out to them, saying, like, hey, if you need anything, i'm here for you. and he's played a big part of that and changing a lot of people's lives, including myself as well. many of today's memorial shared similar personal

stories of how the legendary coach was a mentor and leader, both on and off the mat. stanford university has a new president this school year. jonathan levin was named the university's 13th president last month. yesterday. yesterday, thousands attended his formal inauguration. levin is the first stanford graduate to become the university's president in nearly 100 years. for the past eight years, he has served as dean of the graduate school of business. during his inauguration speech, levin acknowledged the many challenges higher education faces, but said he will be guided by the university's fundamental purpose. we exist as a university to create and share knowledge and to prepare students to be curious, to think critically, to flourish and contribute to the world. this purpose, both simple and profound, gives us a distinctive role in society. after the inauguration, students, staff and the community were invited to a celebration on the main

quad. well, a milestone celebration for a san francisco nonprofit. tonight cameron house is celebrating 150 years of serving the chinatown community organization was founded in 1874 by the presbyterian church to save young women from sex trafficking. their work has evolved over the years, but is still so important to the community. you may have noticed gia vang is not here tonight. i sure noticed it. that's because she's hosting the gala celebrating cameron house, one of the honorees is our special projects producer, the amazing christine nee. she's being recognized for the outstanding work she does in the chinatown community. christine and gia recently highlighted cameron house's history in a two part story. it was amazing. you can watch it on our website anytime you want. congratulations to christine and to jia. all right, let's party on. all right, before we go to weather, we just want to take a second to say happy birthday to the man on your far left there on the

now 62 degrees in san jose 15 degrees cooler than the same time last night. the dublin camera bouncing around because of those westerly winds cooling things off down to 60 right now as you head over to walnut creek, 65 out of temperatures that were still in the 80s at this hour last night, and 54 in san rafael and drizzle falling near san francisco at 56 degrees. so you see the big cooldown underway. temperatures around the inner bay in the 50s and 60s strong onshore winds. that's going to change later tomorrow night, but at least sunday morning begins in the same fashion. some areas of low clouds. what will be different tomorrow afternoon? a little more sunshine on the coast as we begin to see some north wind clearing out those low clouds later in the day. so 50 to start tomorrow morning. highs tomorrow for one more day in the 80s around the santa clara valley and the tri-valley 70s into oakland and hayward peninsula. temperatures in the 70s from redwood city up to san mateo, san francisco. a little chilly with highs in the upper 60s tomorrow and mid to upper 80s

around the north bay. should be picture perfect for the early afternoon start of the 49ers. patriots game out at levi's stadium, but here's where things change. monday tuesday and wednesday. strong high pressure builds in. look at the impact on high temperatures. monday there you go. upper 90s to about 100 degrees. but watch these bay side temperatures closely. this is why things i think are going to be different moving forward. we have not seen the potential of this kind of heat bay side so far this year, but there you go, 90 to 100 possible around the inner bay. so watch out for that on tuesday. wednesday. still just about as hot inland. and then later in the week, high pressure starts to weaken, which should lead to some much needed cooling for the second half of the week. but look at the san francisco 7-day forecast. you think that's the inland forecast with mid 80s in reach for three days 90s possible in san francisco on tuesday. that looks to be the hottest day of the week. and there goes your inland forecast. looking a bit more like arizona for the first half

two boeing starliner astronauts who hope to hitch a ride home in february. when crew nine's mission is finished. the starliner launched to the i.s.s. on its historic mission back in june, its first time carrying people. but the craft encountered problems, so that eight day mission turned into a mission of more than eight months. a third abandoned mega-mansion in an affluent los angeles neighborhood has become the target of taggers. this time, they vandalized an empty mansion in bel air. on thursday, security guards caught five people vandalizing the inside of the property. yesterday, a gardener also found five vandals inside that home again. home is on the market right now for $21 million. or at least it was anyway. it comes after two mansions in the hollywood hills were also repeatedly targeted by vandals. well, locals say he crossed a line, and now green day's lead singer and his band have been banned from two las vegas radio stations. that comes after frontman billie joe armstrong made negative comments
