morning. we're going to check in with mike in just a moment. there's a sig alert on 880 in san jose this morning. concerns with the morning commute. but first, let's start out with a look outside at walnut creek this morning. from inland to the coast, the bay area heating up once again in san francisco. temperatures could even hit the 90s pg&e also bracing for the heat, and is warning thousands of californians about possible power shut offs. that includes a couple hundred customers in alameda, contra costa, napa and sonoma counties. but most of those warnings are further north. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. we are on the last day of september. how long is this heat sticking around? it's going to be at least through midweek. so we do have a few days of this heat advisory in effect for the entire bay area, where we are going to see a big ramp up in those temperatures for this afternoon. and there will also be an elevated fire danger as we get some of our hills and some of the upper elevations, dealing with some breezy winds as it is
5:03 am
very dry. as we're getting started, this morning. nice and cool for you with some mid to upper 50s san francisco. you're at 56 degrees and 60 in san jose. but then as we take a look at our highs for this afternoon and the risk that may pose to your health as we deal with the prolonged exposure being outside, especially with no air conditioning, you're going to see temperatures headed for the low 90s in san jose. but there will be some upper 90s and up to 100 today in concord, so we'll be tracking that heat. mike, you have two traffic alerts we do carry. the first one has the most impact on freeway lanes. all lanes of northbound 880 reported blocked. as you're approaching the alameda northbound coming through san jose. so you'll have to divert onto city streets. i don't know exactly where chp is asking folks to get off of the freeway, but this is right in the area. here's 280 17 and 880 itself going north so that is the impact for the south bay. another alert for the north bay. this one leaves the freeway open with one lane, but it was a deadly crash that happened before 4:00 this morning. very

serious for southbound 680 approaching marsh view. this is south of the cordelia split in cotati heading south down toward the benicia bridge. southbound 680 is down to one lane, and it may be that way until the coroner gets on scene. probably over the next hour. we're going to track that. but so far, the bridges themselves are moving smoothly. and the approach to the bay bridge, no problem there. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. well, this morning, growing calls for change after a violent weekend in the east bay. investigations underway into three separate shootings today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us now in ginger. one of those victims. just a baby. that is correct. from what we understand. kira and laura. and that is heartbreaking. no arrests have been made from what we know of in that shooting, as well as others that happened in the east bay over the weekend. and that is why investigators are asking for the public's help if they know anything that can help in that shooting, as well as others that happened. and i
5:05 am
do want to start with that which happened in bay point just before 6:00 yesterday evening. witnesses say that it sounded like a drive by shooting, followed by return gunfire near the intersection of disney circle and laura and caught. two people were hurt in there in that shooting. one of the victims, as we mentioned, according to a neighbor, is a baby girl that is only a few months old. she was grazed by a bullet, we were told. he said after that first round of gunfire, he heard people screaming. now, the sheriff's department has not shared information about the victims, only saying that two people were taken to the hospital. contra costa county sheriff's deputies placed at least 15 evidence markers in the street on disney circle. now the search is still on as well for a gunman after a man was shot in the stomach in antioch over the weekend. that shooting happened around 4:00 sunday morning. it happened on huntsman way and whitetail

drive. when officers got there, they found a man in his front yard who had been shot. paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he is in critical condition. and in oakland, a heartbreaking and tragic end to what was supposed to be a family friendly event. one person shot and killed at the mcclymonds high school reunion as it was wrapping up around 730 saturday evening. oakland investigators say shots rang out at the center of the park. a male adult. two days shy of his 39th birthday, was shot. opd believes there were more than there was one. one more than one shooter, rather. the city's mayor, responding to the city's 70th homicide over the weekend. it is unconscionable that someone would actually act in a way of violence in this way to take someone's life during a party celebration. but as oaklanders, we will not be deterred. as a

community, we will be unafraid. and the school's principal is saying it is heartbreaking to lose a member of the community. she also reassures the school community that it is safe to attend school. now, police are holding out on the identity of that victim as before they get ahold of the victim's family. if you do know anything about that shooting as well as others, you are asked to contact authorities. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. wow. really, really violent weekend there. thank you. ginger for the latest. also today in oakland, mayor sheng thao holds the latest in a series of community meetings focused on public safety. tao calls them clean and safe city town halls. today's event is at the east bay church of religious science on telegraph near the macarthur bart station. it starts at 530. this evening. also today in oakland, teachers and families

tomorrow, senator jd vance and governor tim walz square off in their one and only debate hosted by cbs news. you can watch the debate on nbc with full coverage starting at 5 p.m. people in the southeastern united states are just beginning to deal with devastation from helene. it was a category four hurricane when it made landfall in florida on thursday before moving into north carolina. millions of people are without power as the death toll continues to rise. this video you're seeing shows the devastation in hendersonville, north carolina. many cities and towns remain isolated, cut off from supplies and from help because of those flood waters. today, in the bay's jay gray reports. reporter miles of debris stretches across florida, georgia, tennessee and the carolinas. helene chewing up and spitting out huge sections of the southeast. it looks like a movie. it doesn't even look real. it looks like somebody

a mudslide taking out several miles of interstate 40. hundreds of roads washed out, turning towns into islands without power, gas or water, and no idea how or when they'll get it back. jay gray, nbc news, boone, north carolina. it's devastating for this people. it's so sad. meteorologist kari hall is here now. tracking the remnants of that storm. yeah. so it's still raining in parts of the east. and the mid-atlantic coast. so it does continue to have a big impact with a lot of rain. you can see it there over west virginia and continuing to move into pennsylvania. and still a lot of rain with the potential of more severe weather. even as this tropical system or what was a tropical system continues to weaken. so we're expecting still more impacts. and as people try to clean up, they're dealing with more rain. so we'll continue to monitor that. here we're dealing with some hot temperatures. and today it will be much hotter than it was yesterday with unhealthy air quality, a spare, the air alert in effect and the peak of the

heat along with that wildfire danger will be coming in tomorrow. still some hot temperatures for the rest of the week, but we are still going to have the biggest impact on the front end of our workweek. and then we'll gradually start to see conditions improve heading into the weekend. mike, you've been watching a lot too. you have two traffic alerts. yeah the first one, i got a little bit of an update or at least some clarity as i'm reading through the details of this crash blocking northbound 880 at the alameda. that's north of 280. if you're traveling up to 101 and to the santa clara area, keep that in mind. you'll have to get off the freeway at some point. chp does have details. there is an injury related to this crash a motorcycle a large motorcycle is involved, but it doesn't sound like life threatening injuries. still, 880 is blocking the northbound direction right now until they can get a crew on scene. sounds like they're close by. southbound 680 still has one lane open. one lane blocked for this deadly crash that happened before 4:00 this morning. you see more traffic volume starting to cause a little more of a

after a rough start to september, the markets have rebounded, especially after the federal reserve's supersized interest rate cut. the dow and the s&p are up more than 1.5% this month, while the nasdaq is up more than 2% for the quarter. the dow has gained more than 8%. the s&p is up 5% and the nasdaq more than 2%. now in focus this week we get data on manufacturing and services sectors, job openings, factory orders and it's all topped off by the september jobs report on friday. today we hear from fed chairman jerome powell who is speaking about the economy. apple may release an ipad like smart home display next year. bloomberg reports it will use a new operating system called home os, and that's based on the software that runs apple tv. it will include apps such as calendar, notes and home and. apple has tested prototypes with magnets so you can mount it on the wall. it will also support

5:20 am
laura will encourage them. all right, let's take a live look outside from downtown san jose. carrie's got a look at our forecast for today. should we be concerned about the air quality as well? yes. so today is a spare the air alert day. so when we get these hot temperatures, quite often we see the air quality suffer. and that's what we're going to see today. high pressure moving in. and it's a pretty intense area of high pressure. the reason why we'll have such a major ramp up in those temperatures today. but it will also look hazy out there and will be unhealthy for anyone with any type of health condition. you do want to limit time outside with the worst of that particulate matter in the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. we're also watching our fire danger today and relative humidity plays a major role in that. when we see relative humidity numbers in the teens and even single digits, that means that any sparks could spread very quickly. it also dries out the vegetation even more, and that is what we'll see for the next couple of days,
5:21 am
along with the wind that will be coming in mainly from the north. looking at our high temperatures for today. so we're going to feel that heat ramping up today with highs in the mid to upper 90s from the south county to the inland east bay. a few spots hitting the triple digits this afternoon and it will be in the mid 90s for much of the north bay. and then when we take it into the day tomorrow, it's going to be even hotter with our high temperature up to 108 in gilroy tomorrow afternoon, los gatos, 104 105 in dublin and livermore, and also looking at highs over 100 degrees for much of the inland east bay, as well as pretty widespread across the north bay. that's when we have the peak of the heat, but it's still going to be very hot. and when you get day after day of extreme temperatures, you start to see that also having an impact on people who live in those areas. with the lack of air conditioning or prolonged exposure you are going to have. unfortunately this causing some health issues as well. high
5:22 am
pressure is moving in, but it will also be quickly moving out by the middle of the week into the weekend. it will still be over the southwest and at least for us, we're going to see the return for the coastal areas to see some more mild weather. but some of our valleys will continue to see more heat over the next few days, with napa looking at hot temperatures extending at least into the weekend, but then looking a little bit better for the middle of next week. with our 7-day forecast showing a lot of 90s and triple digits. i know it's fall. we were hoping to not see numbers like this, but we are going to see this heat wave continue even heating up in san francisco with 90s expected for tomorrow. so we'll be watching that. mike, you have an update in san jose. yeah, we're going to start with unfortunate news. we sounds like it's much more serious than was first indicated on the report. northbound 80 though, remains closed at the alameda or just shy of the off ramp there. and so folks may be trapped in a backup. folks do not get on there if you're
5:23 am
traveling north on 880. i don't know if they'll let you travel north toward the area where the freeway is closed itself. you'll look at the 87 connector over here, as well as surface streets like the expressways taking you north toward 101, if that's your your aim, you have time to remap right now. traffic outside of that area is light for the south bay, but very serious injuries reported now for northbound 880. all lanes blocked at the alameda. and still we have the investigation. southbound 680 in fairfield, traveling down toward marsh view, a bigger build as one lane is blocked in the southbound direction. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. the rise and fall of nfl superstar aaron hernandez coming up next on today in the bay. a closer look at the new limited series exploring the troubled family dynamic. the late football star had and his once successful career. we'll b right backe

customers of. but first, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. we're talking some really hot temperatures here. yes. and so we're getting to that time of year where the vegetation is as dry as it can get. and then when you add in wind and hot temperatures, that means that the fire danger will be really high. so pg&e is preemptively issuing these psps, the power safety power shutoffs. and we will see in some counties where we don't typically see a psps watch happening. and that includes parts of contra costa and alameda county, not the entire population, but there will be some sections that will be affected. so we're looking at hotter temperatures today. so much hotter than it was yesterday, reaching into the mid to upper 90s and even a few spots over 100 degrees. but even more intense heat coming in tomorrow as we reach the peak of this heat wave. but we're still looking at some dangerous heat and the health risk this will pose as we go into the next few
5:33 am
days with even san francisco reaching into the 90s. so we'll talk more about that in just a few minutes. but as we head over to bob redell live in livermore with a look at what we can expect with this power. safety. power shut off. well, good morning to carey. we're talking about less than 400 customers potentially here in alameda and nearby contra costa county, and about 150 customers up in wine country. as you can see on your screen, pg&e has given 24 to 48 hour notices to 57 customers here in alameda county, over 280 in contra costa, 140 in napa and 11 in sonoma. the utility is worried that these breezy offshore winds could cause power lines in those areas to clap together and spark, and with the low humidity, ignite nearby brush and start a wildfire like the large ones we saw years ago in the north bay. so out of an abundance of caution, we've started monitoring and we're considering executing a public safety power shut off. that's
5:34 am
when we proactively shut off the power for safety to prevent any catastrophic wildfires. it's something that we do as a last resort. to be clear, ipsps has called, but we're we're looking at conditions and we've begun notifying customers that that could potentially be in play. pg&e says if they do shut off, power could happen as soon as this morning and last until tomorrow. the power agency says they will be opening 12 community resource centers in those affected areas. this is a place where people without electricity can go to charge your cell phones, stay cool and get some water. reporting live here in livermore. bob redell today in the bay. good information there, bob. thanks. a great tool to track these temperatures and possible power shutoffs is our free nbc bay area app. that's where you can track how hot it's expected to get in your neighborhood. you can find it in your app store.

5:39 am
which is going to increase our fire danger with the valleys looking at highs up to 110 degrees by tomorrow. and then for the bay, it's going to be in the 80s and near 100 degrees. even in san francisco. so here's what we're looking at today. we look very closely at the relative humidity on these hot days. and when we start to see the relative humidity dropping into the teens and the single digits. looking at our upper elevation, the hills, and once again, a little bit of a wind with very low humidity will increase our fire danger for today. we'll see that. and then again for tomorrow, it looks even more intense with much drier air that could drop into the single digits for spots like single, like livermore and in concord, we're looking at some critically dry air, so we'll be tracking that. mike, you have another update for that alert in san jose. we do try to get as much information as we can. they may possibly be opening one lane, the slow lane of northbound 880. but the status is that they've changed type to

5:47 am
are focused on tomorrow night. five weeks until election day, the candidates are hitting the trail hard. hello pennsylvania. hey, las vegas, as this week's focus shifts to the vice presidential nominees set to square off in tomorrow night's debate. vice president harris's running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, prepping in michigan, going great with transportation secretary pete buttigieg playing the part of ohio senator jd vance, former president trump's running mate. he's prepping with house republican whip tom emmer in the role of walz. he'll hold him accountable. i think jd will do a great job. vice president harris overnight arguing the vp debate should not be the last word again, pressing for another presidential faceoff. as you say here in las vegas, i'm all in. she continued her immigration focus in nevada following friday's arizona border visit, seeking to walk a line as polls
5:48 am
show democrats advantage with latino voters continuing to shrink. the vice president calling for both tougher border security and an earned pathway to citizenship, including for hard working immigrants who have been here for years, including our dreamers. former president trump in pennsylvania slammed harris over the border, questioning her new proposals for more border agents and fentanyl detection. why hasn't she done it? you know my expression with her, the number you can say every word she utters. why haven't you done it while ramping up deeply personal attacks on the vice president's intelligence, drawing more republican calls to stick to the issues. vice president harris getting a briefing today at fema headquarters on the federal response to hurricane helene. and white house officials say both she and president biden are planning a visit to the region. once they say they're not going to be a disruption to the

5:50 am
through the center. nearly 8500 adults have received care, as well. unfortunately, the need is not going away. from a year ago to today, you know, a year ago, the world was on ukraine's side. ukraine was winning. they were getting support both financially and emotionally and every other way from the rest of the world. and here we are a year later, and they're not getting that, that that support is barely in the news. they're not getting the financial or the or the military support. and certainly they're not they're not winning anymore. for kurtzig helping the ukrainian people is personal. about a third of his justanswer employees live in ukraine. he also did with his family years ago. jack's fund, dot org welcomes donations to continue providing services like mental health support and backup power generators. thousands of college students in the south bay and peninsula are getting some much needed relief. bay area assembly

5:52 am
taste in our mouth, yeah, i think it was the right type of week. they had a chip on their shoulder this week at practice, and we all did. and so and with that being said, i still think we can all collectively as an offensive unit be better and the niners haven't beat the pats at home since something like 1995. thank goodness that streak is broken. the niners next sunday will host their division rival, the arizona cardinals. we are celebrating hispanic heritage here at nbc bay area. and this morning we're shining a light on some of the people who contribute to our region's rich tapestry. in san francisco's mission district. you'll find denise gonzalez's shop called luz de luna. every shelf filled with traditional day of the dead figures, jewelry, religious items as well. gonzalez calls luz de luna the neighborhood's gift shop. we have necklaces. we have skulls, we have flowers. look how beautiful those flowers are. we also sell like candles, crystals, anything that helps

the soul. you like kitties vibrant there. gonzalez was born in peru. came to the u.s. when she was 25. she worked in the medical field, but said she wanted something more. coming up tonight on nbc bay area, you can watch the full story of how gonzalez's store, luz de luna, came to be. and for more on our hispanic heritage month coverage, all you have to do is scan that qr code on your screen. it'll take you to our website, where you can watch a series of stories celebrating culture and history. beautiful. all right. we're going to get to kari with this hot, hot heat. yes. it's been one thing that we have to watch out for, but as we go into the next few days, we'll have several issues, including our air quality, where we are going to see a lot of hazy skies, and it's going to be unhealthy for anyone with any kind of health condition. unhealthy for sensitive groups for the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. and then looking at the heat. so this is
5:54 am
going to be a factor in how we plan our day. starting out nice and cool. but this is where we're headed for the middle of the afternoon with a high of 96 today in livermore and dublin 100 in concord. and we're going to see some mid 90s pretty widespread for much of the north bay, up to 103 in ukiah and san francisco in the mid 80s. but look at what happens tomorrow. this is the peak of the heat where we're going to even see our coastal areas deal with some dangerous heat and a major heat risk, widespread for the peninsula down to the south bay into the east bay, and as hot as 108 degrees in ukiah. and then into the day on wednesday. we're still dealing with some dangerous heat, but dealing with it day after day with only a moderate cooldown in our overnight temperatures will start to have more of an impact, but this high pressure will be quickly moving on. kind of parking over the desert southwest and for the bay area. that will provide some slight relief, but still pretty warm temperatures. we take a look at
5:55 am
morgan hill. we're going to see our temperatures here peaking on wednesday, and then we're going to be in the upper seconds and close to 100 degrees all the way up until sunday. but then early next week we could possibly get some more relief. but this is going to be a really hot week for the bay area with our microclimate weather alert, and we're looking at some still very warm temperatures even going into the weekend with the high fire danger, the air quality as well as that potential of hyperthermia, you do have to watch out for some of those risks with your health as well as heat stroke. now, looking at san francisco, this is where we also start to see the city dealing with more issues and people going to the hospital with highs in the 90s here, that will continue through midweek with some dangerous heat. and then it does look a little bit better here going into the weekend. mike you're still tracking those two traffic alerts right kari. we're looking at the south bay first where we have three tow trucks, as best i can tell, that are trying to get
5:56 am
to the scene here. northbound 880 still has almost all lanes blocked. we do have word that they've reopened the alameda off ramp to hopefully relieve some of the folks who have been stuck in the backup for over an hour now. northbound 880 jammed up. i'd suggest in the area if you want to take san carlos over to 87 or stevens creek boulevard on the other side of the freeway over to san tomas expressway. those are two ways you can get to northbound 101, if that's where you're heading past sjc, the airport there, that does cut off part of those surface streets. as we look to the rest of the south bay, northbound 101 does continue with the build. and now is to ease up a bit. over the next half hour, we'll see another build coming through the south bay. hopefully we'll get one lane open before then, if not more. meanwhile, southbound 680 continues with just one lane open and one closed. deadly crash here at marsh view does block one lane. it slows south of the cordelia junction. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. 555. happening now, governor gavin newsom has until midnight tonight to sign into law any new
