if triple digit heat is set to take hold of the bay area. our meteorologist, kari hall, is timing out how long it could last? a violent weekend in the east bay. three cities plagued
6:01 am
by gun violence. and one of the victims is a baby. this morning, the growing calls for action. hurricane helene leaves a trail of damage from florida to the carolinas. we are live in one of the hardest hit areas as the desperate search for hundreds still missing intensifies. this is today in the bay good monday morning. thank you for starting your final day of the month with us. i'm kira klapper in for marcus washington. it's going to be october, but certainly not going to feel it. i'm laura garcia. a lot to talk about today. let's start out with a live look outside in walnut creek from inland to the coast. the bay area is heating up once again in san francisco. temperatures could hit the 90s pg&e also bracing for the heat, and it's warning thousands of californians about possible power shutoffs. that includes a couple hundred customers in alameda, contra costa, napa and sonoma counties. but most of
6:02 am
those warnings are going to occur further north. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. kari, how long will this heat stick around? it's going to be at least through midweek. so we are going to have much hotter today compared to yesterday with unhealthy air quality. but the peak of the heat as well as that fire danger will increase tomorrow. and we're going to see that continue into at least wednesday. but it will still be warm. so we're not looking at any major relief here even as we go into the weekend with our morning starting out nice and cool. this is where we do catch a break with our mostly mid to upper 50s all across the bay area, but it's also a little bit cooler in sonoma and santa rosa as we've dropped back to the 40s, but we're going to see it pretty even all across the bay area, which includes san francisco, some of our coastal areas where we are going to have some hot temperatures there as well. but the peak of the heat will be once again moving in tomorrow with highs over 100 degrees widespread for many of our inland valleys. so i'll be
6:03 am
tracking that in the impacts coming up. mike is 880 still blocked in san jose. we just got word confirmation from chp san jose division that one lane your far right lane is open as you pass by. the alameda folks can exit there and continue on northbound 880, though still jammed by the morning commute coming off of 280 heading up in toward the alameda exit. that includes passing bascom avenue as a reference point there. now we're looking at the rest of the south bay. the first slowing for 101 eases up as there is a crash in the area and nothing serious from what i understand, and that will start to build over the next 45 minutes. we'll track that. i had hoped they'd have more lanes open by now, but at least one is open. that's the south bay sigalert. meanwhile, the north bay traffic alert continues. southbound 680 jammed up basically off of cotati, all the way down to marsh view. a deadly crash happened before 4:00 this morning. still has one of two lanes blocked. here's the rest of your east bay build back to you. thank you very much, mike. 602 right now and this morning, growing calls for change. after a violent weekend

in the east bay. investigations are underway into three separate shootings today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us now. and ginger, these shootings are troubling because they took place where families normally are supposed to feel safe. that's right. laura, a neighbor in one of those shootings or at one of those shootings, says that one of the victims is a baby. just a few months old. it is heartbreaking, as these violent shootings happened in the east bay over the weekend, and that's why investigators are asking for the public to help them, along with their investigation. if they have any information on that. i want to start with one of the shootings, the one that we were just talking about. it happened yesterday evening just before 6:00, and it happened in bay point. witnesses say it sounded like a drive by shooting followed by return gunfire. and it happened near the intersection of disney circle and laura anne court. two people were hurt. one of the victims,
6:05 am
according to a neighbor, is a baby girl only a few months old. she was grazed by a bullet, he said. after that first round of gunfire, he heard people screaming. now, the sheriff's department has not shared information about the victims, only saying that two people were taken to the hospital. contra costa county sheriff's deputies placed at least 15 evidence markers in the street on disney circle. now the search is still on for a gunman after a man was shot in the stomach in antioch. that shooting happened around 4:00 sunday morning on huntsman way and whitetail drive. when officers got to that location, they found a man in his front yard who had been shot. paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he is in critical condition. now in oakland, a heartbreaking and tragic end to what was supposed to be a family friendly event. one person shot and killed at the mcclymonds high school reunion as it was wrapping up around 730 saturday evening. oakland investigators
6:06 am
say shots rang out at the center of the park. a male adult. two days shy of his 39th birthday, was shot. opd believes there was more than one shooter. the city's mayor, responding to the city's 70th homicide this year. it is unconscionable that someone would actually act in a way of violence in this way to take someone's life during a party celebration. but as oaklanders, we will not be deterred. as a community, we will be unafraid. the mcclymonds principal says she is heartbroken over this loss in their community, but reassures their school community that school is safe. police have not identified the victim at this point. they will not do so until they reach out to his family. now, investigators say if you do know anything about that high school reunion or any of the shootings that we just mentioned to contact them. hopefully that

6:08 am
immediate action to make all water lead free. the rally is planned for 4:00 this afternoon outside oakland city hall. two decision 2024 five weeks from tomorrow, americans will elect a new president. former president trump today expected to visit hurricane damaged neighborhoods in georgia last night. vice president harris held a rally in las vegas. second gentleman doug emhoff, meantime, visited the bay area last night, attending a harris fundraiser on the peninsula. it took place at the menlo park home of boc ceo andy levy and his wife joelle emerson, co-founder and ceo of paradigm. before the event. supporters expressed their enthusiasm. just really excited to meet doug and support the campaign. a lot of the points he made, we've heard before. it was really good to hear all of it directly from him in person. harris conducted a west coast blitz over the weekend,
6:09 am
including a stop in san francisco on saturday, adding more than $50 million to her campaign war chest. during a rally yesterday in erie, pennsylvania, the former president slammed harris and the biden administration for what he called a slow response to the devastation from hurricane helene. he also criticized her for sticking to her plan of holding west coast campaign events, considering what happened in the south. biden has already said he would rather not disrupt rescue and recovery operations before seeing that damage firsthand. the focus to start the week will no doubt be on the vice presidential candidates tomorrow, senator jd vance and governor tim walz square off in their one and only debate hosted by cbs news. but you can watch the debate on nbc with full coverage starting at 5 p.m. well, laura just touched on colleen people in the southeastern united states are just beginning to deal with the devastation. it was a category four hurricane when it made

landfall in florida thursday before moving into north carolina. millions of people are still without power, and the death toll continues to climb. today in the bay jay gray joins us live from boone, north carolina, and, jay, what are you seeing? i mean, it's only been days since this storm passed through. yeah. and, kyra, it is a mess. look, boone, like so many areas in the path of helene caked in mud, right now. downed power lines that they're dealing with. and then scattered patches of splintered wood. shattered glass, twisted metal. it's everywhere. miles of debris stretches across florida, georgia, tennessee, and the carolinas. helene chewing up and spitting out huge sections of the southeast. it looks like a movie. it doesn't even look real. it looks like somebody took the road. it looks like play-doh. and just like, threw it to the side. so it's. it's

the damage is astronomical. and continuing to unfold. flood waters washing away entire communities. the violent storm. and now its aftermath. responsible for more than 60 deaths. teams on the water and in the air. searching for more than 100 people still missing, including guadalupe hernandez, corona's sister. through a translator, she shares their last heart wrenching phone call. her sister called her family to say goodbye because they knew they weren't going to make it so they were able to call them and talk to them. she talked to her kids, her sister monica is her sister, talked to her kids and was able to say her goodbyes. in many areas, flood waters are still raging, still ripping apart anything in their path. conditions on the ground remain extremely dangerous. roadways are damaged. there are downed power lines and unstable ground. a mudslide taking out several miles of interstate 40. hundreds

helene. so we'll be watching that for today. we're starting out clear, bracing for some high heat, and we will have these hot days ahead from today through thursday, where we could see those temperatures and some of the valleys heading close back to 110 degrees, while even the coastal areas in the bay will be near 100 degrees, and that will increase our fire danger as we get more of a wind and very low humidity. as far as temperatures for today, not feeling like it was yesterday. we're talking mid 90s for santa rosa and napa and 100 today in concord, so we'll be tracking this heat. talking more about the impacts in just a few minutes. mike's been tracking looking at the gas prices around the bay. that's right kari. let's take a look at these prices as we're looking toward alameda county to start our low of 419. we shout out valero on hayward in hayward on hays street today. there are a number of others at that price point in alameda county, though in marin county, the best is 421. mill valley has arco on redwood highway and the last

right now a look at futures this morning. stocks are poised for a slight dip at the open ahead of the final day of the third quarter. stocks rebounded from a rough start to september thanks in part due to the fed easing interest rates. fed chair jerome powell will talk about the economy later today at a business summit in nashville. and as those interest rates slowly come back to earth, there are hopes for a new surge in home sales. home lender freddie mac says the average 30 year fixed mortgage rate is now just over 6%. it is a full percentage point lower than last year, and now receding back below rates two years ago. but it's nowhere near its former lows. nbc's vicky nguyen explains there are still many factors for buyers to consider home affordability comes down to what is your salary? what is the insurance?

morning. saturday night live returned over the weekend to kick off its 50th season, and that cast wasted no time diving deep into this year's contentious presidential election. i just want to say thank you. joe biden, thank you for putting country first and for handing over the reins. i didn't want to. dana carvey, they're the premiere's cold open, spoofed democratic and republican political rallies. maya rudolph made her highly anticipated return, portraying kamala harris with dana carvey. you saw him there playing president biden. james austin johnson also got back into character as donald trump, in one viral sensation, took center stage during weekend update. before me, the only hippos in media were either hungry, hungry or jada pinkett smith in madagascar. but now i'm your favorite hippo's favorite hippo, and i'm thirsty. thirsty hoes.

6:22 am
jose and 56 in san francisco. so after this cool start, we'll have to monitor the fire danger. relative humidity, very high right now. this is one of the factors that goes into whether or not we are going to see a red flag warning or the elevated fire danger when the relative humidity drops down into the teens, that is critically dry air, it dries out the vegetation even more and then any sparks that we have could spread into a fire, a wildfire very rapidly and usually in the morning we are seeing those relative humidity numbers in the 8,090% range, but it's already going to start out low tomorrow morning and get even drier as we go throughout the day. so tomorrow is the peak of the heat and the peak of the fire danger. as well. we are going to see temperatures today much hotter than yesterday. 93 in cupertino and 101 in gilroy. for much of the east bay, it's in the upper 90s and even 100 degrees for concord and antioch. pleasanton, livermore, 96 and 87, 89 degrees
6:23 am
in oakland and 97 in martinez, near the coast. we're even going to heat up here with some mid 80s and daly city. half moon bay and 92. in palo alto, san francisco in the mid 80s today and unfortunately headed for the 90s for tomorrow. so we're getting ready for that as the north bay will be in the mid to upper 90s for this afternoon, and 103 in ukiah. this high pressure is going to be right over us tomorrow, but then it's going to park over the desert southwest by the end of the week. it will still keep our temperatures hot, but we are going to have the most intense heat coming in for the next couple of days. and then once again, that heat continues into the weekend with upper 80s and low 90s, and we may find some much more relief for the middle of next week. but overall, we're going to have a very hot week ahead with unhealthy air quality and an elevated fire danger. and san francisco is going to possibly see some of the hottest
6:24 am
temperatures we've had. so far this year. and mike, you're still tracking two alerts. yared carey. i want to give folks a chance to look at the entire bay. so self-serve folks, look at your area and see everything that's going on. not so bad. however south bay and north bay, we do have those alerts that continue in san jose northbound 880. we just got confirmation again, north 880, the alameda off ramp and one lane there is open the rest of the lanes are closed by a deadly crash in the northbound direction. happened just before 5:00 this morning. still have three lanes blocked there. and in the north bay we still have southbound 681 lane open, one lane blocked. we've got more news for youas well as,

the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders.

bay area heat wave. we are tracking triple digits 90s in san francisco. could your neighborhoods power be shut off to prevent fires from sparking? plus, the fate of san francisco's schools. the update students, parents and families have been waiting for could come this week. this is today in the bay. welcome to monday morning, 630. right now i'm laura garcia, and i'm kira klapper, filling in for marcus washington. let's get right to that microclimate weather alert. meteorologist kari hall is here leading our coverage of this heat wave. i'm not properly dressed for the temperatures we are expecting. at least it's cool. this mornin.
6:32 am
and we're starting out with some mostly 50s around the bay area. but we are bracing for this high heat and the potential of not having power over the next couple of days in some spots, including parts of the bay area for contra costa and alameda counties, and then also parts of the north bay not everyone affected, but there will be spots and one of the ingredients for the possibility of an elevated fire danger is extremely low humidity, critically dry air, and we could see relative humidity numbers dropping into the teens for the inland areas for today. so it will be hotter. it looks hazy as well as unhealthy air quality, and the peak of the heat will be coming in tomorrow. the rest of the week we will be dealing with some hot temperatures as we are looking at still more 90s. so i'll be tracking that for you and we'll be talking more about the impacts in a few minutes. sounds good. we'll check back with you. kari now let's head over to today in the bay bob redell. he joins us live from livermore, which is expected to
6:33 am
be one of the hottest cities. bob, people there are bracing for those possible power shut offs. correct. good morning. shakira and laura. we're talking about less than 400 potential customers here in alameda and nearby contra costa county, and about 150 customers potentially up in wine country. you can take a look at your tv screen. pg&e has given 24 to 48 hour notices to 57 customers here in alameda county, over 280 in contra costa, 140 in napa and 11 in sonoma. the utility is worried that breezy offshore winds could cause power lines in those areas to clap together, and spark, and with the low humidity, as kerry mentioned, ignite nearby brush and start a wildfire like the large ones we saw years ago in the north bay so out of an abundance of caution, we've started monitoring and we're considering executing a public safety power shut off. that's when we proactively shut off the
6:34 am
power for safety to prevent any catastrophic wildfires. it's something that we do as a last resort. to be clear, ipsps has called, but we're we're looking at conditions and we've begun notifying customers that that could potentially be in play. pg&e says that if they do shut off the power, it could happen as soon as this morning. and last until tomorrow. the power agency says they will be opening 12 community resource centers in those affected areas, places where people without electricity can go to charge their cell phones, stay cool and get some water. reporting live here in livermore. bob redell today in the bay. all right. keep cool out there, bob. thanks. yeah, a great tool to track these temperatures and possible power shutoffs is our nbc bay area app. it is free when you download it, you can track how hot is expected to get in your neighborhood. you can find it all in your app store. well,

turning to new developments as heat and low humidity are prompting new evacuation orders in southern california. the line fire in san bernardino county has been burning for nearly a month, but it flared up again yesterday, spreading to areas that didn't even previously burn. a man was arrested earlier this month after investigators say he intentionally set that fire. justin hülsenberg has pleaded not guilty. the lion fire has scorched more than 40,000 acres. it is 83% contained. firefighters have not yet announced if they know what sparked a deadly apartment fire, which displaced a dozen people in san leandro. it happened yesterday afternoon on washington avenue near halcyon drive. firefighters say two of the three people inside the unit where the fire started made it out alive. but sadly, a 78 year old man and a dog died. neighbors who know the victim were in shock. you see him every day coming to get the mail or picking up his grandkids in school and it was just a

tomorrow. developing now, the devastation from helene has left millions without power and the death toll climbing towards 100. take a look at this new video from asheville, north carolina. it is among the hardest hit areas. at least 88 people across several states have died due to the storm. an estimated 2 million people across the southeast remain without power. accuweather says the total cost of the damage and economic loss from helene is. estimated between 145 and $160 billion. a san diego fire crew headed to north carolina to help victims of helene were hurt in a crash. it happened near the texas-louisiana louisiana border. a battalion chief and two fire captains were airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. the trio was part of a 48 member search and rescue task force. crew members are at last check, waiting for further instructions on whether to proceed to north carolina. the group is working with fema to determine if their resources are

still needed. we are going to turn now back here locally to this live look over san jose on the final morning of the month. as we enter october. meteorologist kari hall has a heat wave 90s triple digits for everyone else 90s in the city. yeah, and this is the time of year where we do get hotter coastal temperatures as well. we don't like to see it, but we will at least be prepared for it as we are also going to have unhealthy air quality to spare the air alert day. and it's going to be most unhealthy in the east bay, as well as santa clara valley, where you get high pressure, just traps all of those pollutants, including vehicle exhaust. and so that makes it very difficult and unhealthy to breathe in. as we look at our temperatures, we are going to see those highs in the mid 90s. it's going to be so much hotter than it was yesterday. and it gets even hotter for tomorrow. look at san francisco today, 84 degrees. but then tomorrow it's going to be
6:39 am
in the 90s. there also 90s for the peninsula into the south bay with temperatures as hot as 108 degrees. we'll see that in gilroy, as well as ukiah and 103 in napa and in santa rosa. so i'll be tracking the impacts of all of that heat coming up. mike, are both of those alerts still active? they are. kari. the south bay and the north bay. and an issue for bart as well. north 880 is open with one lane. just one lane three are blocked by this deadly crash. a motorcycle involved has been taken from the scene. from what i understand, two other vehicles remain on scene. north 880 is jammed up as we see that build for the south bay starting. we see that for 101 more slowing starts back at capital expressway 87 sees more slowing and more traffic may be shifting over to avoid that section of 880 87 traveling north might be one of your good options in the area. meanwhile, south 680 coming through fairfield. we have only one lane open at marsh view before 4:00 in the morning. a deadly crash happened there.
