>> consider this, the remnants of helene continue to linger along the coast. there are new threats lingers in the tropics. >> so much to cover this morning, including al's forecast. we will go to north carolina this morning. but we begin with george solis in asheville. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the death toll stands at 97 and is expected to go up. now that the sun is out, we have a view of areas that were completely submerged. look at the devastation in the river arts district. cars toppled over like they were toys. that's a snapshot of the bigger picture of damage, which is why some people in the community are calling this asheville's katrina. frustration is going that there is not a larger presence of a federal presence here in the area. no timeline on when utilities like water will be turned on. this morning, the devastating

effects of hurricane helene reaching far and wide, as residents come face-to-face with destruction and a tragic reality. >> i don't know if we could rebuild or come back from this. >> reporter: flood waters downing bridges and submerging entire towns. like chimney rock, north carolina, now destroyed. as cleanup begins, communities like here in asheville, north carolina, still underwater. from above the city, heartbreaking views. some areas still unreachable by water slow to recede. >> i have never seen anything like this. i mean, there were buildings fully submerged. >> my mother lives in a nursing home. we tried to get there today. you just can't. >> reporter: some people kayaking to safety. we were there when water rescues got underway. and the storm also devastating florida's gulf coast. a dangerous surge flooding homes and city streets. helene's 100 plus mile an hour winds ripping out floors as locals begin the long road to rebuilding. >> we're not going to wait a

month or two. >> reporter: cars that survived the storm -- >> lines moving very slow. >> reporter: -- at a standstill, waiting for hours to fill up at the pump. while in north carolina, many roads are impassable, maing rescues even more difficult. the true scope of the damage and loss is still unknown. >> what mother nature can do and the damage is still incredible. >> reporter: this morning, president biden is expected to address the devastation related to helene here in the western north carolina region. he's also expected to visit helene-impacted areas, as long as it doesn't interfere with search and rescue operations, which are currently ongoing. one bright spot, if you will, is the community banded together in such a big way to help one another out in this crisis that is slow to resolve. savannah and hoda? >> george, thank you very much. we are joined by the director of communications in hard-hit north carolina, which

includes the devastated city of asheville. so good to see you, lillian. this happened 500 miles off the coast. it's a mountainous region. i can understand that residents did not expect anything like this. what are your number one concerns at this hour? >> right now, our biggest concerns are getting food and water to people. we have very limited phone service. service. the towers are starting to come back on. we did put a temporary tower downtown for folks to get some phone access so they could let their loved ones know that they're okay. that's the biggest issue we've had in this situation. you know, we don't have water. we don't have running water, and we don't have a time line for when we will have running water. >> you cut out just a little bit there at the end, but i think we still have you. if i understand it, many, many roads have been washed out, including part of the interstate. how difficult is it to get that

help, those resources into this community? >> i went home last night for the first time since this storm hit. i live in black mountain. to say it's decimated would be an understatement. roads are so impassable that getting supplies up the mountain, i-40 is closed due to a landslide, and that is our main connection east across the state. so we're having to actually fly materials in, take other routes. we have one little pathway open up the mountain that we've got deputies who are working with emergency response to get supplies up that mountain. but we need diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, all of the things. we don't have anything at this point. >> i don't know what the number is of people unaccounted for. what -- tell us about what you know there. >> we have received thousands of reports of people who are unaccounted for.

a lot of those are due to the lack of connection. no phones, no ability to text your loved one and see if they're okay. but, you know, driving through the area where i live, homes are gone. and that's -- that's a big concern for us. where are those people? we have 30 confirmed fatalities at this time, and we expect that to really increase over the coming days, which is just the most tragic piece of this, is the loss of our friends, our families, and our loved ones. >> lillian, it's just difficult times there. >> i know. >> our hearts are with you. >> we are, lillian. >> thank you. >> take care. >> thanks for getting the word out. i want to turn to al now. this is just devastating. you are talking about inland in this mountainous region. how did this happen? >> that's the biggest problem, it is a mountainous region. when the moisture comes up against those mountain ridges,

it raises. it's what we call orographic lift. as that air rises, it wrings out as much moisture as possible. some places picked up up to 30 inches of rain. every bit hits those mountains and comes rushing down, and there is really nothing anybody could do. unfortunately, we still have the remnants of helene causing problems. obviously not the kinds of problems our friends in north carolina have seen, in parts of tennessee, on into western south carolina, but we still have scattered showers around with this thing. still pushing in and up to the mid-atlantic states. we are looking at anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of rain in the mountains of west virginia still. they're not out of the woods by -- i should say virginia. they're not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. and we have a very active system out here. we have tropical depression joyce.

strike over the weekend. iran is vowing revenge. pushing the region closer to the brink. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in beirut for us this morning. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. i am now over south beirut, that is the area where israel carried out that strike, killing the hezbollah leader, nasrallah. it may be difficult to hear on this microphone, but there is an israeli drone circling overhead right now. they have been circling over south beirut all weekend looking for more hezbollah leaders. hezbollah itself remains defiant. its deputy leader saying the group will emerge victorious. israel is widening its war in lebanon and far beyond it. carrying out its deepest attack overnight in lebanon's capital in nearly 20 years. this israeli strike happened in the middle of the night.

for the first time, it is not in the southern suburb of beirut, the hezbollah stronghold in this city. but it's right in the heart of the commercial district. and that has many people in this city very nervous that now no area is off limits. israel is hunting hezbollah across beirut and targeting all of iran's militias in the middle east. yesterday, israel carries out a major strike in yemen. the port city, now in flames, is under control of the houthis, backed by iran, and who have been targeting ships in the red sea. but lebanon remains the main focus of israel's expanding war. israel said it wants to destroy hezbollah, the crown jewel in iran's so-called axis of resistance. new images show the massive crater left by the u.s.-made

2,000-pound bunker busting bombs that israel dropped to kill hezbollah's leader, nasrallah, in beirut last week. and now israel is hitting hezbollah while it's down and in disarray, trying to eliminate every senior and mid-level commander it can find. president biden was asked sunday if an all-out war can be prevented. >> we really have to avoid it. >> reporter: but many lebanese have no faith the u.s. can or wants to stop this. this morning, we visited an office complex now full of families that just fled south beirut. izdahar told me she thinks if israel does invade, it'll only make hezbollah stronger, because guerrilla war is the group's specialty. many here remain loyal to hezbollah, cheering nasrallah's name, as they wait for his replacement to be announced. an israeli official told nbc news this morning that israeli special forces have conducted a

stem kira klapper. here's a look at some of our top stories and a microclimate weather alert as extreme heat descends on the bay area. i'm bob redell here in the east bay. do not expect fall weather when october starts tomorrow. the bay area is bracing for a heat wave and possible power shutoffs. you can see on your screen. pg&e is given 24 to 48 hours notice. 257 customers here in alameda count. over 280 in contra costa, 140 in napa and 11 in sonoma. the utility is worried that breezy offshore winds could cause power lines in those areas to clap together and spark, and with the low humidity, ignite nearby dry brush and start a wildfire like the ones we saw years ago in the north bay. perfect time to check on that microclimate weather alert with meteorologist kari hall and the temperatures that we will see today will be very much like what we've seen

garcia happening now? a series of shootings being investigated in the east bay. i'm ginger conejero saab this morning. investigators are asking for the public's help after violent shootings in three east bay cities, including one in bay point. two people were hurt. one of the victims, according to a neighbor, is a baby girl. only a few months old that was grazed by a bullet. the sheriff's department there has not shared information about the victims. also in oakland, one person was shot and killed as a mcclymonds annual high school reunion was wrapping up saturday night. oakland pd says they believe there was more than one shooter. this is oakland's 70th homicide of the year. we are under a microclimate weather alert. kari joins us with a new wave of hot weather. yeah. we'll start to feel that heat ramping up today. mostly low to mid 90s for parts of the south bay, but upper 90s for the south county into the tri valley and much of the north bay will be in the mid seconds. the heat will peak tomorrow and we're going to see widespread

giving an indication of how strong this water was. make no mistake, there are pockets of neighborhoods here completely underwater. search and rescue teams trying to find people in some of this murky, murky mess. officials here finally are weighing in, saying we have some cell service restored, but there is no definitive timeline on when crucial services like water will be restored, which is adding to concern and frustration to residents here who are worried that the federal presence here is not on the ground already. county officials are weighing in now, saying the situation, while slow to improve, is starting to be heading in the right direction. still, there's a lot of fear, concern, and people presumed missing. county officials weighing in this morning. here's what they told us. >> right now, our biggest concerns are getting food and water to people. we have limited phone service. the towers are starting to come back on. we did put a temporary tower downtown for folks to get some

love with how it looks. i don't know. i think it's so beautiful. and there is such beautiful art inside. so it's about these three little dorks who get kicked out of etiquette school. they go to a school run by a mad scientist. they're dorks. so there is a lot of diagrams in it. i just -- when i was young, i loved diagrams, and i still do. i read instruction manuals for fun. and, so, i wanted to, you know, give kids a fun thing to read that made them feel like, oh, my gosh, this is so fun. and there's diagrams. >> were you dorky in middle school, too? >> i was the dorkiest. i can't describe to you how dorky i am. there's me. my first ride on a tractor mower. i thought that i was -- there is me with my two cats. spartans t-shirt from "snl." animals that are not in that picture, but were in that room. man, i had a menagerie in there.

and i owe her everything. >> when you wanted to go into acting, she was like, you go girl, all the way? >> i was an art history major. and i was like, mom, i think i want to change to acting. and she was like, neither is more practical than the other, so go for it. >> and this idea for the book, you had this even like before "snl." this has been with you for a long time. >> i started writing this when i was 26. and then i got on "snl" when i was 28. and i just kept going. i kept -- i wrote the first chapter of this thing 500 times. i counted on my computer. i have 500 drafts of the first chapter. in retrospect, should have written the whole thing and then gone back. i was learning how to write in those 12 years i was at "snl." they have some of the best minds in the united states working. being in a room with them watching them work, i learned so much about writing, and i was
