those outdoor activities early. here's what we're headed for today 100 in hayward, 105 in fairfield. concord. one of the hot spots at 108, will also see 108. in ukiah and 109 in gilroy. today, even san francisco will be heating up with highs in the mid 90s. we'll be tracking the rest of the forecast. i'll have an update in a few minutes, but mike now updates you on gas prices around the bay. yeah, i wish your numbers were a little lower. fortunately, mine have lowered a bit. we'll go to the best price in the bay. looks to be in contra costa county today. concord with 405. that's at the valero on willow pass road in solano county. they continue to favor the big box. we'll go to sam's club again for 406 in vacaville. that's on helen powers drive. and the bottom number here is in the south bay. the best in the south bay is 417. in cupertino alliance on stevens creek boulevard. you can check your specific area closest perhaps to your house. gasbuddy.com. as we look on the roadways, we're looking at a pretty typical tuesday, which means a good volume of traffic.
6:11 am
we do have that road crew northbound 680, which has one left on the area. the rest have cleared up anywhere north of bernal. southbound there is a crash is blocking the slow the fast lane. so watch for that as you head down towards central boulevard, slowing out of pleasanton and into the south bay. a typical build for the east bay toward the bay bridge and at the toll plaza. back to you. we'll see you in a bit, mike. it is 610 right now. major ports along the east and gulf coast shut down overnight. tens of thousands of port workers walking off the job just ahead on today in the bay. the demands they're making as they start to strike and the major impact it will have daily on the economy. plus, a warning to jeep owners. thousands of vehicles recalled over a fire risk. the crucial advice from the maker of the cars until a solution can be found. this is following. this is halloween, halloween, halloween, halloween, halloween. it's october 1st, so that means the holiday countdown is on not

under a microclimate weather alert, where we are going to see temperatures quickly ramping up. here's a look at what to expect in santa rosa at 9:00. we're in the mid 60s, but heading over 100 degrees for today, and we are going to see more of this heat tomorrow. so i'll have more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. and we'll have more traffic continuing to hit the roadways right here. oakland 880 moving smoothly past the coliseum also in the east bay, though we have slowing on 680. there is a crash and another hazard as you head down through pleasanton causing that commute to slow and continue to build throughout the east bay coming up. thanks a lot. mike and kerry. let's take a look now at futures. stocks appear set to open mixed this morning after the dow and s&p 500 finished the month of september at record highs, including a late rally yesterday. investors shaking off comments from fed chair jerome powell saying he expects smaller
6:16 am
rate cuts moving forward. this was the first positive september for the s&p in five years. futures so far appear to be holding up despite the standstill now impacting ports up and down the east coast all the way down to houston. tens of thousands of workers walked off the job at midnight. a strike could cost the u.s. economy hundreds of millions of dollars per day. it may also soon delay shipments for everything from cars to retail items to alcohol and pharmaceuticals and yes, the added costs will be passed on to consumers when it comes to toys for the holiday season, though analysts say most companies plan ahead and readjusted shipping plans. cvs health is reportedly reviewing options this morning, including a possible breakup of its retail and insurance units. the struggling health care services provider is looking to turn around its fortunes as it faces pressure from investors. cvs is also discussing whether
6:17 am
its pharmacy benefit manager business, which oversees drug benefits for health plans, should be housed within the retail unit or under insurance. such a move would essentially undo the company's $70 billion takeover of aetna in 2017. stellantis is recalling more than 150,000 plug in hybrid jeeps due to a potential fire risk. the parent company of chrysler, jeep, dodge and fiat says a routine review of customer data led to an investigation, which discovered a dozen fires in vehicles that were parked and turned off. the recall affects the 2020 to 2024 jeep wrangler and 2022 to 2024 jeep grand cherokee. stellantis says the risk seems to be lowered when the battery charge is depleted. it is advising owners not to charge their vehicles and park them away from buildings or other cars. until that issue is resolved. the season premieres just keep

coming on nbc bay area and one week from tonight. everyone's favorite world renowned professor of behavioral science. you know that guy? he turned an investigator. well, he's about to return. we are looking into every possible angle. i promise. and i know i don't have to tell you that you should not be involved in this case. there is no way i'm going to sit by and do nothing when rose has been abducted. the irrational is back for season two. and law and order legend jesse l martin portrays alec mercer. he uses his expertise on a variety of different cases involving governments and law enforcement corporations as well. i spoke with martin ahead of next week's season premiere, which involves the abduction of mercer's girlfriend. that's how the last season ended. now, he says his career as an actor helps him tap into his character in the series. there are things that i, i think i've, i've known a big part of my life being an actor because part of our job is to
6:19 am
watch human behavior and replicate it in various mediums. but i think everybody does that in some way, shape or form. i just have the science to back it up now, and some of the terms that i could use to describe behavior and why things are rational or irrational. so get it on your calendar. season two of the irrational kicks off one week from tonight on nbc bay area. it it airs at 10 p.m. well, speaking of calendars trending this morning with october 20th, 24 now officially underway, here are some important dates we're keeping track of for you. halloween obviously 30 days away. so you haven't thought about that costume just yet. tick tock. oh, no. only 58 days until thanksgiving. what are you going to serve? besides, who's coming? and you might want to check that list twice. christmas, 85 days from today. don't kill the messenger. as you're introducing stress. no. i looked at
6:20 am
halloween on the calendar. i'm like, okay, it's on a thursday, so you stay up late thursday night and you just have to make it through friday at work, and then you're good. all right. we've seen those spirit stores popping up, so yes, you'll be an energy drink for doesn't it all feel like it's the holidays approaching because it's so hot out there? we're going to have more of this heat as we go into the next few days. so let's get a look at where we're starting this morning. a nice reset to the day after hot temperatures yesterday afternoon. we're at 64 now in san jose and it is 61 in walnut creek. now here's some of the things to keep in mind when you're especially working outside or staying for long periods of time outside in the heat, look out for the signs of either heat exhaustion or heat stroke. now, heat exhaustion causes dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, and a rapid heart rate, as well as weakness. here, you need to get into the shade and stay hydrated. if the person starts to feel confusion, stop
6:21 am
sweating. has red hot, dry skin, a rapid, strong pulse or loss of consciousness that is the time to call 911 and get to the emergency room. these are definitely some of the risks that we have today with this high heat, but also our air quality is suffering. so it's a spare the air alert day. and if you can catch public transit, we're trying to reduce our carbon emissions to keep from all of that. just settling in to some of our valleys and some of the worst of that air quality is going to be in the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. and here's a look at our highs for this afternoon. 104 in los gatos and in gilroy, 109 degrees. just really brutal temperatures today with upper 90s and 100 degrees in hayward. and then we'll see concord topping out at 108. a lot of new records may be set today. palo alto, 98 degrees in san francisco up to 94 downtown and in the north bay, 94in mill
6:22 am
valley, with 104 in santa rosa and 103 in napa and in sonoma. let's get a look ahead to concord. one of the other key factors in the risk that we have with a lot of heat is a prolonged heat wave, and that starts to really impact you day after day of how you feel and starts to have more of an impact. the longer that we're in these hot temperatures in concord, we're still expecting triple digits through sunday, and then we may find some relief through the middle of next week. so really hot weather continues throughout the week, the peak of that for some areas in the inland valleys will be tomorrow. and then still the hot weather continues into the weekend, while san francisco will see the peak in those hot temperatures today. but it's still pretty hot tomorrow with a high of 90. and then we'll drop it back to the upper 70s for the weekend. mike, you're tracking the bill throughout the east bay. yeah. over here. we have got more folks leaving richmond via the bridge over towards san rafael. a smooth drive approaching the area. we just have general
6:23 am
slowing as folks are traveling, tapping those brakes for the volume. same thing for highway 37. more traffic south to 42 on the south. 680 we did have a disabled vehicle that cleared from walnut creek. we should see more traffic flowing down through moraga and lafayette, and also down through danville and san ramon for 680. but no problems there at 680, that jams up through pleasanton. still have a crash and a disabled vehicle as you head down into sunol. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. hurricane helene created headaches back east. plus thousands of used car lemons that might be headed west. i'm consumer investigator buyers nexta. a warning for car
6:24 am
6:25 am
6:26 am
and that means 2000 miles away here. bay area consumers like you need to be on alert. consumer investigator chris chmura explains why. good morning. hurricane helene swept through half a dozen or so states, swamping homes, businesses and countless cars. company carfax doesn't have an exact estimate of how many cars yet, but it's saying tens of thousands of cars have suffered flood damage this hurricane season. and here's the problem shady used car traders reliably move those cars to sell them elsewhere, like here. take a look at this carfax map. the
6:27 am
darkest colors show where the most flooded cars are washing up, and california is a deep navy blue. let's be clear you do not want to buy a car that was in a flood. so if you're in the market for a used car in the next few months, check the vehicle history. if it shows it came from the east coast, think twice. another warning. really shady sellers will try to hide that car's history. so even if a used car supposedly wasn't back east during hurricane season, try a couple things before you buy it. sniff for a musty smell. look for foggy headlights, tail lights or signals and pull up the carpets. see if there's any sign of sand, silt or mud. ideally, hire a mechanic for a professional inspection. we made a how to video all about avoiding flooded cars. it's on our website and streaming channels. just look for the to how playlist. great tips! thanks, chris. we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including dangerous temperatures being felt throughout the bay area and
6:28 am
not over just yet. meteorologist kari hall tracking when the heat, however, could subside. and i'm bob redell, one of the most popular places during this heat advisory. your local community pool, which we expect many people will be headed to later today as temps here in livermore hit 104. the possibility of power shut offs in other parts of the bay area and one of the giants all time greats is now taking over as president of baseball operations. we'll show you what who he is and what people are saying about it comingp. u

does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor, mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme
6:31 am
that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need. for another hot day of the week. an excessive heat warning issued for parts of the bay area. we've got live team coverage as temperatures already start to rise this morning. plus facing a financial crisis as school closures loom in san francisco. the meeting today is set to address the fears of students, parents and teachers. best move i've seen in a long time. really? yeah. i was not a big farhan fan. i'm a huge buster posey fan. now i hope for more rings and another trophy. and i think buster posey is going to do a good job. get ready to say president posey. the giants
6:32 am
shaking up their leadership with a very familiar face. but it's buster posey, management material. bay area sports experts and fans weigh in. this is today in the bay here we go on tuesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus washington has the morning off. tuesday morning. it has been already nice and warm. we're going to get right to meteorologist kari hall. this is day two of this heat wave. and likely you're saying the worst of it right. yes. so we're going to see a very hot temperatures today may be just as bad or even worse in some spots tomorrow. so we're starting out with a nice cool morning for most of us. take a look at our current temperatures. we're at 65 in san francisco, 52 in sonoma, and it's 61 in pleasanton and in livermore. that's another look at dublin this morning as the sun rises bright orange. and we're going to see a lot of unhealthy air moving in hazy air quality and hazy skies with
6:33 am
unhealthy air quality. as temperatures here in dublin go from 73 to over 100 degrees throughout much of the afternoo. in fact, those are the temperatures that we'll see across a lot of our inland valleys. even san francisco will be in the mid 90s, very close to 100 in parts of the city. oakland today, 97 and 104 in livermore. and that's where we find bob redell there live this morning to talk more about the excessive heat, as well as how people are trying to cool off there at the pool. yeah. good morning to you, kerry. when you say it's going to be 104 today, makes me want to jump in right now. just a pre cool off. we're here at the robert livermore community center. the pool here. the community pool in livermore. this is just the regular open swim. it's normally open at 6:00 this morning, but we imagine people will be out here later in the day as those temps get higher. if you say it's 61 right now, we're looking at a 43 degree jump to that high of 104.
6:34 am
as we are into this heat advisory that is expected to go on until tomorrow night at the earliest in the north bay pg&e is still warning about the possibility of public safety power shutoffs over concerns that the winds could rattle power lines and spark a wildfire in this hot weather. the utility has given notice to more than 140 pg&e customers in northwest napa county to be ready for no electricity now, pg&e had also warned hundreds of customers here in the east bay, namely contra costa and alameda counties, to be prepared for possible power shutoffs. but the winds weren't as bad here in the east bay, so the agency canceled those warnings. so in addition to the heat, the other thing we're concerned with right now is just the wind and the humidity with the breeze that we're anticipating, it is likely going to get stronger and gusty in those upper elevations. it would not surprise us if we see a red flag warning issued by the national weather service in the
6:35 am
north bay mountains. he's a division chief with the santa rosa fire department, reminding everyone to limit any sort of outdoor activity that could lead to a wildfire, like using gasoline powered tools near dry brush, for example. now, this was the scene last night in concord where a fire broke out off of ignacio valley and cal roads. no damage to any structures, but the fire department tells us it was very dangerous for firefighters as they were working in their turnouts and temperatures that were around 95 degrees reporting live here in livermore, bob redell today in the bay. go jump in that pool, bob. keep cool. you can track the temperatures and possible power shutoffs as well with our free nbc bay area app. find out how hot it's going to be in your neighborhood. you can find it in your local app store. san francisco supervisors today are holding an emergency hearing to address a looming school closures tied to the district's massive budget shortfall. the district's issues are widespread. other problems
6:36 am
include a major hiring backlog that was not addressed before the start of the new school year, as well as hundreds of uncredentialed teachers. i spoke with supervisor asha safai, who called today's special hearing. he says there's so much to sort out and there's so little transparency that he's not even sure schools need to close. i put out a statement that says, you know, the financials haven't been made. we haven't been made aware of the financial arguments. i'm not exactly sure why we're headed in that direction. there's a lot of families that are going to lose the support that they need in their schools and their neighborhoods. so again, there's a lot of questions that are being left unanswered. and so we're going to push very hard to get to the bottom of this. well, right now the district plans to finalize its list of closures sometime this month. today's hearing gets underway at three in the afternoon. the san francisco giants turning the page this morning when a former player takes charge of baseball
6:37 am
operations. you've probably heard of him, buster posey. today in the bay's thom jensen joins us live in san francisco. this morning. and tom fans no doubt hope that winning record that posey has had on the field translates to the front office. definitely laura. a winning player for sure. buster posey showed that he's got grit to coming back from that horrific leg injury in 2010, 2011. excuse me and then leading the giants to two more world series after that and 12 more years, 12 years total. with this one franchise. buster posey of course, up on this wall with other giants greats like mccovey and mays, he put up huge numbers and will rank as one of the best catchers of all time in major league history. posey led the team to three world series championships between 2010 and 2014. a seven time all star national league rookie of the year also won a national league mvp, along with a gold medal as a member of that

us team. in the olympics in 2017 and la giants chairman and manager bob melvin. chairman greg johnson and manager bob melvin will be making the formal announcement at a ceremony and press conference at oracle park in a couple hours. the team fired farhan zaidi after six seasons and just one playoff appearance, followed by two losing records the past two straight seasons. someone who knows an awful lot about giants baseball, the dynasty years and the players chronicle sports columnist scott ostler said fans will see a new approach now to baseball operations and how they're managed in 2025. what farhan zaidi promised but never delivered, which is a kind of a compromise between new school hard core analytics driving every decision and old school tobacco spitting, baseball and ownership group tobacco spitting baseball. giants chairman greg
6:39 am
johnson thanks zaidi for his efforts in san francisco, and he wished him the best moving forward. johnson said the team needed someone to define, direct and lead the franchise, baseball philosophy and elevate the team so that it can consistently contend for championships. and he said posey is the perfect fit and that he will work well with manager bob melvin to accomplish those goals, and we hope to hear more. expect to hear more in a press conference from manager bob melvin and the new man, president of baseball operations buster posey, at that press conference at 10 a.m. this morning. ginger and laura, we can't wait to hear what both of them have to say. president posey, here we go. we'll see how it goes. thanks so much, tom. that's right. well, 6.39 now for you on this tuesday morning, taking a live look at san jose with the sun coming up. and it's going to be a hot, hot, hot one. meteorologist kari hall here with more of what we can expect or should we even take a jacket today? well, now you know, it's still pretty comfortable for

much of the bay area, but you don't have long before you're peeling that off. and temperatures are heating up. and on these days when we do have smoke and ozone, it does make for a beautiful sunrise. and we're starting out this morning with a lot of orange hues, but that will become unhealthy as we go throughout the day. unhealthy for much of the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. and if you can catch public transit and try to reduce our carbon emissions today we're headed for some really hot temperatures. today, dangerously hot. that may set a record in spots like santa rosa, where we're expecting a high of 104. the record is 101, set back in 2012, will be close to a record in san francisco. 97 would set a new record in oakland and in livermore 104. that would be also a new record and 100 today in san jose that would break that record set back in 1980. and mike, you're tracking a backup in the tri-valley. yes. 680 continues to be a tough drive south from the dublin interchange through pleasanton. the disabled vehicle and a couple of fender benders.
6:41 am
one is still blocking the fast lane around sunol. so the sunol exit. so watch for that. drive south into the tri valley. 84th may see more traffic building as folks do see that they're going to avoid the dublin interchange. 880 is an option for folks from castro valley. they can head to the west, and it's not so bad as you travel south through hayward and fremont. typical build across the san mateo bridge in the south bay. we're looking at pretty typical freeway patterns right now. a note that we do have a hockey game today at the sap center, so sharks fans will be out in the area. watch for that. increased traffic right around the tank as we're looking at the east bay. a pretty typical build here. 680 holding steady through walnut creek back to you see you in a bit. thanks. thousands walking off the job overnight. coming up next, the impact of dock workers strike is likely to have on your bottom line. and vice presidential debates don't usually get this much attention. so why will tonight's be different? we're talking live with a polling expert on the issues at stake.

election. with less than five weeks to go, a make or break night lies ahead for the vice presidential candidates. senator jd vance and governor tim walz square off in their one and only debate hosted by cbs news. but you can watch it right here on nbc bay area. and joining us now is paul mitchell. he's a polling expert from political data incorporated based in sacramento. paul, thanks for getting up early and joining us. let's talk. thanks for having me. let's talk about what kind of impact do you think these vp candidates normally they don't i feel have that big of an impact on the race. but this year is very different. yeah. this year we're facing what's really kind of a short election cycle. so it's almost like every event has greater importance in this small like 90 day campaign. as opposed to what we're used to. so i think particularly for tim walz, there's a need for him to try to help voters better understand kamala harris. and it's different than in past vice presidential debates, where the person at the top of the ticket
6:47 am
was 100% well known by all voters. there wasn't some like pent up need to learn more about that candidate. so in this case, i think the opportunity is different in walz's case. and for jd vance, you know, he's come on to the stage and when he got in the race, you know, it was against joe biden. the race is dramatically changed. and he's been found out to be kind of one of the least popular vp candidates that we've seen historically. and so he has a lot of work to do if he wants to improve his own numbers. yeah that's that's a good point. good transition really for me right now because i wanted to ask you, how are the vp picks polling right now. well, you know, kamala harris and tim walz are actually in this rarefied air right now where they they might have a lot of voters that don't like them, particularly republican voters. but on net, they're favorable. unfavorable is positive, meaning that there are more people that view them favorably than unfavorably. that might not sound like a big deal, but for politics in this age,
6:48 am
with how polarized it is, that is a big deal. jd vance has some pretty negative ratings, actually more negative than sarah palin's, which was the previous kind of record negative ratings for a vice presidential candidate at this time. all right. so we've just got a few weeks now for the big presidential candidates as well. are they running out of time? early voting starts soon. what needs to happen? well, california voters are already starting to get to their ballots this week. the counties are required to send those ballots out by monday, but some counties are already getting those ballots out. so, you know, the time is really short. and this race is very close. i think that we only have a few potential events coming up that could really provide an opportunity for these candidates to have unfiltered access to the voters in this kind of format, where we might get tens of millions of people, you know, online or on network tv watching this debate, you know, as it happens, the

vice presidential debate, we know, you know, like you said, doesn't have a huge impact on the race. but in this cycle, it might be an opportunity for these candidates to help shape the presidential contest. going into this last month. yeah, and we'll see where it goes. what a year it's been already. paul mitchell, thanks so much for taking the time to join us once again. hey, thanks for having me. you can see that debate tonight right here on nbc bay area. and we'll turn now from here at home to global politics happening today, a historic presidential inauguration south of the border. claudia sheinbaum will be sworn in as mexico's first ever woman president. she is also the first jewish person to hold the position. sheinbaum is a climate scientist by profession who once studied physics and engineering at cal. governor gavin newsom is among the leaders in mexico for today's historic event. our sister station, telemundo cuarenta y ocho, will have special coverage of today's historic inauguration. coverage for that starts at eight this
