make these decisions. how can we, as a nation say that your life and your rights, as basic as the right to control your own body, is determined on geography? right now, at six, a high stakes debate from abortion rights to border policies. jd vance and tim walz make their case to voters, all while keeping it cordial. we're live in washington with a look at the standout moments. growing fears of an all out war in the middle east as israel vows retaliation for iran's massive missile strike. and now americans are trapped. one bay area residents desperate race to get out. and another bay area scorcher in some places hotter than yesterday. meteorologist kari

hall is tracking record temperatures. this is today in the bay. and good wednesday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington. good to have you, ginger. and i'm laura garcia. let's talk about the heat. checking in with meteorologist kari hall. another hot one on tap. yes. and we're talking about another day of this excessive heat warning that has actually been extended into thursday night. so all of these areas in pink are going to have another day of dangerous heat. and an elevated fire danger. at least this morning it's starting out fairly mild and a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 60s as you head out in san mateo and in san jose in the upper 60s for now, but then back into the very uncomfortable category for today, with a high of 103 in santa rosa and in novato, 106 today in livermore and in dublin in san jose, we're going to see a high of 101.
6:02 am
slightly hotter than it was yesterday. so you can track temperatures on our free nbc bay area app. and there you can learn how to get it on the app store. and the temperatures in your neighborhood. look for it in your app store. thanks, kerry. we'll check back in. so who won? this morning, reactions are pouring in following last night's vice presidential debate, and the answer may depend on who you ask. both candidates squared off in their first and only head to head for the most part, it was civil, at times even polite. but there were issues that triggered some heated exchanges. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live in washington. and alice, so will this have any impact on this razor tight race for the president? ginger. well, what you just said really is what could make it have more of an impact than usual. normally, you don't expect a huge bump from a vp debate, but even a small bump in such a tight race could make a difference. and as you noted,
6:03 am
you know, tone is something we talk about a lot after a debate and it was noticeable this time. a lot of people calling it a night of midwest. nice, because the nominees frequently highlighted points of agreement, though deep divides over policy were on clear display, won the virtual coin toss, and elected in a largely civil debate. minnesota governor tim walz and ohio senator jd vance frequently referenced common ground while sparring over profound policy disagreements on immigration. you've got to stop the bleeding. you've got to re-implement donald trump's border policies, build the wall, re-implement deportations. governor walz bringing up the tanked bipartisan border bill donald trump said no, told them to vote against it because it gives him a campaign issue. when you don't want to solve it, you demonize it. pivoting to trump-vance false claims about haitian migrants in springfield, ohio, that led to a dispute over fact checking and muted mike's abortion. another focal point
6:04 am
senator vance saying republicans need to earn back voter trust on the issue. the proper way to handle this as messy as democracy sometimes is, is to let voters make these decisions. let the individual states make their abortion policy. how can we as a nation say that your life and your rights as basic as the right to control your own body, is determined on geography? the nominees trading barbs over the economy. kamala harris's atrocious economic record, which has made gas, groceries and housing unaffordable for american citizens. kamala harris is day one, was donald trump's failure on covid that led to the collapse of our economy? in another flashpoint, senator vance refusing to acknowledge former president trump lost the 2020 election. tim, i'm focused on the future. did kamala harris censor americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 covid situation? that is a that is a non-answer. the
6:05 am
candidates fighting for an edge in likely the final debate before election day. and that's the. and the debate stayed largely focused on domestic policy. but the nominees did weigh in on the spiraling conflict in the middle east. just hours after iran's missile strikes against israel. both nominees pointing to the need for steady leadership, though, of course, they sharply disagree on who can provide that and exactly how. ginger, so much to watch out for. thank you alice. and still on politics, but now here at home tonight here on nbc bay area, you can catch another debate in the race to replace outgoing congresswoman anna eshoo. this is district 16, which covers parts of the peninsula and the south bay. former san jose mayor sam liccardo faces off against assemblyman evan low tonight at seven. they'll be here live. you can watch that on nbc bay area as well as on nbcbayarea.com. developing now israeli forces overnight launched new airstrikes targeting hezbollah.
6:06 am
we have a live look, in fact. right now at beirut, it comes as ground troops expand their incursion into southern lebanon. and it all follows iran's large scale missile attack, raising fears of a wider scale war. iran yesterday fired up to 200 missiles, many of them ballistic. israel says its iron dome defense system limited damage on the ground. u.s. air support provided critical assistance. there are now reports of damage to a school in central israel, but so far no israeli casualties. the one death being reported so far is a palestinian man in the west bank. israel is vowing to launch a major air assault in response to iran's strike. now people who live right here in the bay area, among thousands of americans now trapped in the expanding war, some are hunkered down in shelters, many just scrambling to try to find a way back home. today in the bay thom jensen joins us live in san francisco this morning. and, tom, i
6:07 am
understand one peninsula man, certainly understandably desperate to get himself and his parents out of lebanon. that's right. among the thousands of people, as we heard, laura, thousands of people in bomb shelters trying to avoid the ballistic missile barrage coming in from iran on israel, and then thousands more in lebanon like this man and his parents trying to escape the war. thereafter, israel sent ground forces into lebanon. a rabbi from an oakland synagogue said members of his congregation, many of them, have been hunkered down in bomb shelters under that barrage of 200 or more ballistic missiles launched at israel. but israel has already sent ground forces into neighboring lebanon to push hezbollah forces farther from its border, where a million people have been displaced and a thousand killed, according to lebanese officials. that's where san mateo man has been in lebanon with his parents trapped. they say they have not been able to get a safe flight
6:08 am
out of the country and back home, and he grows more worried the longer it takes to find a safe route home. i'm worried for my mom and dad, probably more than i'm worried for myself, you know, i'd hate for anything to happen to them. and you know, i hope that at least even 1 or 2 of us can make it back home, if not all. whether it's through the beaches or through these military airports. i think that we're just counting on the united states government to get us out, because i don't think anybody feels safe driving towards beirut in the condition it's in. by the way, jonathan was evacuated from lebanon with his family 18 years ago as well. but this time he's worried for his parents and himself not knowing if they will all make it out safely because of the difficulties they've had so far. the state department estimates there are 6000 americans in lebanon who have been contacting the agency trying to find safe

routes out of lebanon. in san francisco, thom jensen today in the bay. i can't imagine what they're going through. tom, thanks for the latest. 608 now, new developments in oakland and a war of words brewing over the recent sale of the coliseum property. the dispute centers around a $15 million payment tied to the larger coliseum deal. mayor sheng thao factored into her budget plan to minimize potentially deep cuts. three council members say the buyer, the african american sports entertainment group, is already behind in its payments and a contingency budget will kick in starting today. it could mean imminent cuts impacting emergency services, including police and firefighters. the mayor's office is reportedly disputing the claims, insisting to the chronicle. the coliseum deal is still on track. we spoke with mayor sheng thao about some of the major issues now impacting oakland. that story is coming up in our next half hour.
6:10 am
across the bay area, the heat is certainly on. here's a live look in san francisco. the city experiencing sweltering temperatures and karl the fog not there to help carry. are we going to be seeing karl anytime soon? probably not. at least through the weekend. we are still in for some well above normal temperatures and our air quality also has been a little bit more unhealthy as a result of this high pressure. that's causing this extreme heat and not much movement of that air to mix out some of these pollutants. so it's still going to be unhealthy for sensitive groups in the east bay. and santa clara valley. that's the worst of the air quality, but it's still moderate elsewhere. and in walnut creek, we're going to see temperatures in the mid 70s at 9:00. at 1:00 it is 98 degrees, and we're in the triple digits throughout much of the afternoon. and we're going to have another sweltering day where we may reach some more record highs in santa rosa. the forecast is 103. the record is 102. we'll be very close in san
6:11 am
francisco and oakland. we may tie a record in livermore of 106, and san jose may smash that old record of 96 as we hit a high of 101, we'll talk about some gradual relief from this heat coming up. mike, you've been watching those gas prices up or down this week. a little bit down. we'll take that. right. you're talking highs. i'm talking the lows. baz lowe is in the north bay today. sam's club continues that streak in vacaville, same place where they dropped another couple of cents 404 and the lead spot for today heading back to concord for the middle number. it's still at 405 for their best. but today we'll call it another big box. it's costco on monument boulevard this time. and in cupertino they still have the south bay's best 417 hold steady, but the different spot today we're talking cupertino car wash looking at those temperatures and deanza boulevard you can gas up and cool your car down and get a nice clean shine on there on the roadways, a smooth flow of traffic. nothing major except for this crash, which could develop into something bigger.
6:12 am
right now, a crash reported west 580 approaching 238. lanes are blocked now a couple of lanes, and it involves a big rig. i'm watching this closely. back to you. both highs and lows from mike and kerry. there you have it. well, things are looking up when it comes to housing in the south bay. the way this giant crane helping some people make it in the bay. and you heard mike talking about gas prices. four bucks a gallon. that's great. but what about the situation in the middle east? what's that going to do to the price at the pump out to the futures this morning? second day of the fourth quarter. looks like a little bit of losses. and let the chunk off begin. it's fat bear week in alaska. and we're going to show you how you can get in on the fun even from thousands of miles away. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay
6:13 am
6:14 am
6:15 am
excessive heat. here's what to expect in discovery bay, where temperatures are starting out at 9:00 at 76 degrees, but it quickly heats up into the 90s and will stay over 100 degrees for several hours throughout the afternoon. we'll talk about a gradual comedown of those temperatures. i wouldn't say cool down. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes.
6:16 am
yeah, we've had a generally steady build up of the westbound traffic here for those tail lights across the san mateo bridge to the peninsula. there are no issues there between san francisco and the south bay. in the east bay, though, a couple of spots. we're concerned about the backup that's forming. i'll show you that. coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the first day of the fourth quarter did not give us much on the stock market. october a down day at least yesterday. but september was very good to investors. usually september is a rough month, the 500th. starbucks has announced it's going to unionize that location in bellingham, washington. we're keeping an eye on gas prices in the. as the middle east gets more and more violent. these are still very reasonable prices compared to the past. and a number of experts i've talked to don't think we'll return to $100 a barrel prices. opec is still producing a lot. america is producing more oil than any country in the world. in fact,
6:17 am
prices are low enough. some shale producers, frackers and yeah, you can say that on tv are thinking about slowing down production to keep oil in the ground, waiting for higher prices. there's lots of good news about the economy. tuesday, the u.s. government said there were more than 8 million jobs available in america, and the number of layoffs has fallen. we get the big jobs number friday, but take a look. real gdp up 3%, unemployment near historic lows. it fell last month. inflation very close to 2%. the number that the fed wants. and the fed's cut interest rates. these are all good news. longshoremen are picketing on the east coast in the gulf coast demanding more money. a report from the new york harbor says about one third of dock workers make $200,000 a year, with overtime. the strike, if it lasts long enough, will drive up prices and leave shortages in the stores. california ports are not
6:18 am
affected now. dock workers both here and there are also very worried about automation. robots taking over their jobs. back in 2002, california ports were shut down over the introduction of barcodes. dock workers normally used a clipboard and pen to record container numbers, and the port wanted them to use handheld scanners, and toyota announced this morning it's invested another half billion dollars in joby aviation. joby is based in santa cruz. they make air taxis. it brings toyota's total investment to nearly $900 million. so someday you're gonna have to choose between that and a corolla. you know, you want to take it for a test flight? yeah. there you go. i might still choose the corolla on the ground. all right. thanks. a lot, scott. well, things are literally looking up when it comes to making it in the bay. bay area based startup samara used a crane to lower a one bedroom, one bath adu behind
6:19 am
a south san jose home. it's all part of an effort to add affordable housing to the city about 15 minutes away. city leaders are preparing to double the number of low income housing units in one development. similar small homes are set to be built as part of the new ferrari project, which aims to house 250 people. construction should wrap up in september of next year. perhaps america's most popular sports pregame show is about to make a rare bay area stop, and bart is pulling out all the stops to make it easier for fans. now, if you know college football at all, you know espn's college game day, which starts extra early on the west coast. now, for the first time ever this weekend, it will go live from uc berkeley. that's at cal's memorial stadium. cal hosts miami on saturday night. bart will start running trains at 5 a.m. welcome to our world. well, one hour ahead of its usual weekend start time. i
6:20 am
mean, that's not too much of a change, but those early trains will only stop at certain stations, so make sure to double check the schedule. well, trending for you. this morning. in addition to the presidential election, there are other candidates working to vie for your vote. you were just talking about cal bears. we're talking about big bears. fat bears specifically voting in the 2024 fat bear week contest officially gets underway at 9:00 this morning, following a delay after the death of one of the anticipated contestants. the event itself, though, is celebrating the resiliency of the 2200 brown bears that live on alaska's peninsula. you have a chance to select your favorite brown bear among a dozen possible candidates voting last through tuesday. so what do you think? for more info, go to explore dot org slash fat dash bear dash week. wait, what? that one's a pretty. it was a mouthful, but that's what it wa. i'll try to put a link out there to make it a little easier for
6:21 am
you. those look like some pretty chunky bears, i don't know, is it the one that ended up killing the other bears? he's still up for a vote, i don't know. no, i see no, i don't know if he's disqualified at this point anyways. all right, well, let's get a look at this weather. carry because it is still a scorcher all across. and kahleah is nowhere to be seen. yeah, unfortunately there is nothing. no place where we can go to escape the heat. usually we can go to the beach and the coast. well, it's going to be hot there too. so as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, starting out clear, bracing for another hot day. when we look back at yesterday, we hit a high of 102 in santa rosa, which tied the old record, and then in san rafael, 105 yesterday afternoon, 100 and kentwood and in san jose. both of those areas set new record highs. and it will still be hot today with unhealthy air quality. we are in another spare the air alert day, and there is some little relief for some of the coastal areas tomorrow. for the inland areas, it's going to be warm into the
6:22 am
weekend. here's a look at our high temperatures today. and look at your microclimate. it may be even a degree or two hotter than it was yesterday. 104 in martinez, 106 in livermore, san jose. also a degree hotter with a high today expected to hit 101 and 111. in gilroy just brutal temperatures, 90s in san francisco. tomorrow it's going to be in the mid 80s. that's only slightly better at least for half moon bay. it's starting to feel a little bit more comfortable, but we're still over 100 degrees for the tri valley. parts of the south bay and up to ukiah, where we're going to see a high of 101 on friday. no more triple digits, but we're still having to turn on the air conditioning. we're still going to be in the low to mid 90s across much of our inland areas, into the east bay, as well as the south bay. but look at the next several days for san jose. it's not until the middle to end of next week, when we really start to feel like
6:23 am
fall, with highs in the mid 70s next thursday and friday, but it takes us a while to get there, so we're only seeing a slight decrease from day to day, and this weekend it's still going to be hot for the inland valleys with mid to upper 90s in san francisco, we're seeing seconds today, 80s tomorrow, and then a few 70s into early next week. and mike, you're concerned about a crash in castro valley? yeah, this is westbound 580 at the castro valley y just before the split or just east of geo here of 238, the reports are that there's a prius and a big rig involved. no major injuries were reported, but that prius reportedly wedged into part of that big rig. so they're having a little trouble separating the two vehicles. two of the five lanes. it's a wide roadway. there are blocked right now. we'll continue to follow progress still slow north 680 through the construction zone right around las positas. back to you. well, testing is key to detecting breast cancer, but what if there was a way to prevent it altogether? next, what you need to know about a
6:24 am
new breast cancer vaccine. already entering early trials. you're watching today in the bay
6:25 am
does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor, mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need.
6:26 am
each year, more than 360,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. if it is caught early enough. the five year relative survival rate is 99%. now,
6:27 am
researchers say a vaccine is the next frontier. in fact, trials are happening right now. but the vaccine is only being tried on people with extensive cancer histories. as nbc news medical contributor doctor natalie azar explains, is for people who have a history of cancer and then giving them a vaccine to prevent recurrence. sparing healthy tissue used in conjunction with conventional treatments. well, the hope is that by next year there will be ongoing trials taking place for every subtype of breast cancer. i head on to the today show. what experts say is still needed to fast track those trials before it can be made available to everyone. that is, at 7 a.m. right after today in the bay. wouldn't that be remarkable? save a lot of lives. 627 right now we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including new gun violence in oakland overnight. but it's nothing new. so what's the mayor doing about
6:28 am
it? we're not going to live in fear, and we're actually going to build community and have make sure that we take care of each other. i talked with her one on one about the city's efforts to crack down on crime. plus, concerns about wildfires here in the bay area as the national weather service extends this excessive heat warning for another 24 hours. stay with us. you're watchin todayg
6:29 am

6:31 am
overnight in oakland. it's the latest sign that gun violence is increasingly becoming an issue for the city. and the mayor weighs in on her plan to crack down. and last night, what is probably the last debate of the election. we'll have your highlights. this is a little amazing for san francisco. yes, it's very hot. i know it's crazy. i don't remember it being this hot at this time of the year in a long time. the fall heat wave is certainly not letting up in bay area residents are feeling it and it's not over just yet. the area is expected to feel the heat worse than before. this is today in the ba. good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 631 right now. i'm laura garcia and i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington. meteorologist kari hall is going
6:32 am
to join us because it. kari. it has been. hot hot hot. and it continues to be hot. how is it going to be today? it's still about the same. and in some areas in our inland valleys, it may be a degree or twothese ares where the temperatures will have more of an impact on the bay area. and then the heat advisory along the immediate coastline and some parts of the hills and parts of the north bay. we are going to see temperatures in the 90s and up to 100 degrees. right now we do have our cool morning start. we're at 63 in walnut creek, but already some of these numbers are even warmer than what we had yesterday for that reset in the morning. and we are going to see those temperatures possibly set some more records for this afternoon. santa rosa looking at a high of 103. today's record high is 102. will be very close to record highs in many spots, and livermore may tie the record of 106 today. that was set in 1980. so we will have more of this extended heat
6:33 am
wave continue for the next couple of days. ginger and laura. that's right. we're going to continue talking about it. in fact, right now, kari, this bay area's excessive heat warning will continue to last a lot longer than first thought. and today, in the bay's bob redell is live in livermore. one of the places kari just mentioned. bob, the tri valley will once again be roasting and you have one possible solution, right? she said 106 i've been out here in livermore for over 20 years. that's pretty. it's even hot for us out here. yeah. the solutions. lizzie fountain right behind me here in downtown livermore, which we expect will be turned on later. and typically during these heat waves, you'll see moms and dads out here with their young kids running in there trying to cool off before the high heat, which is usually obviously going to be in the afternoon. as kari has been mentioning, the national weather service has extended the excessive heat warning for us here in the bay area for another 24 hours until 11:00 tomorrow night, because so many parts of
6:34 am
the bay area will be in the upper 90s and in the hundreds, like kari mentioning up north in santa rosa and here in livermore, this was the scene yesterday north of us in concord, where we caught up with the owner of og tacos. he says operating his food truck in 100 degree temps is a challenge, and the power needed to keep the truck's air conditioning running actually caused issues for the generator yesterday. we struggle, man, because it doesn't keep up with the heat, you know? so typically when you're, let's say 100 degrees, it's typically about 10 to 15 degrees hotter inside the truck. there is probably zero fuel moisture, 0% fuel moisture in most of our fuels here in our hills. so that was a captain from the contra costa fire protection district, whose agency has been preparing all summer for days like today, to be on the ready in case a wildfire breaks out in this heat. also, it's another reminder to avoid the kinds of activities near dry brush that could ignite a wildfire, like using gasoline powered tools.
6:35 am
this was downtown gilroy yesterday, which was really hot and expected to hit triple digits again today. and san francisco, which is usually cool, obviously saw its hottest day in two years with governor walz government warnings to residents to take precautions. stay hydrated. the city will be opening all nine city pools today again to help people stay cool. that's in the city of san francisco. here in the city of livermore, we have a pool. we also have lizzie fountain that we hope will be turned on later. i'm sure a lot of moms and dads are hoping for their little ones who want to burn some energy. stay cool before it gets really hot here. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell today in the bay. bob's got a pool. we're coming over. coming over. bob. that's all we heard in all that thing. thank you. we'll bring the pizza. right? well, you can track the temperatures on our free nbc bay area app. if you live in one of those cities that bob was just mentioning as well, you can track how hot it is
6:36 am
expected to get in your neighborhood. you can find that in your local app store. all right. two decision 2024. did you watch it? the two vice presidential candidates squared off in their first and only debate last night. scott mcgrew joins us now. a lot of important issues certainly came came up maybe more issue oriented, really than the harris trump debate. i thought so, yes. good morning. abortion, the middle east, the deficit. now that doesn't necessarily mean that the candidates answered the questions, but at least the questions were there. minnesota governor tim walz squaring off against ohio senator jd vance. probably the last debate for the election. trump has indicated he will not debate kamala harris again. a lot of people talking about governor walz's performance, particularly off the top, the democratic candidate seemed unsettled. a split screen for you of how the governor reacts to crowds at a rally with enthusiasm and ease. and last night, sometimes stumbling over answers, several pundits saying he seemed
6:37 am
overprepared. walz did go on the attack over vance's claims haitian immigrants were eating pets in ohio, something that is both incendiary and not true, but was never really set. the stage for viewers. explaining what vance had claimed or even who he was talking about. he never used the word haitian, for instance, that led one of the cbs moderators to explain the topic walz was raising about haitians who were in the u.s. legally and that led vance to object over a fact check that really wasn't a fact check at all. just to clarify for our viewers, springfield, ohio does have a large number of haitian migrants who have legal status temporary protected status. margaret thank you, senator. we have so much to get to. margaret. i think it's important to turn now to the economy. thank you. margaret, the rules were that you guys are going to fact check. and since you're fact checking me, i think it's
6:38 am
important to say what's actually going on. thank you. gentlemen, we want to have app has not been on the books since 1990. it's something that kamala harris created. margaret. gentlemen, you're the audience can't hear you because your mics are cut. we have so much we want to get to. thank you for explaining the legal process, nora. thank you. margaret. now, as you'll note, we're compressing some of those conversations for brevity and clarity. if you haven't seen the whole debate, you can watch its entirety online. the january 6th attack on america also came up with walls asking vance directly, do you agree with history and fact that donald trump lost the 2020 presidential election? vance would not answer that question directly, instead comparing the attack on the u.s. capitol to efforts by the government to slow misinformation about the pandemic on social media. i would just ask that did he lose the 2020 election? tim, i'm focused on the future. did kamala harris censor americans from speaking their mind in the
6:39 am
wake of the 2020 covid situation? that is a that is a non-answer, has she? it's a non-answer for you to not talk about censorship. obviously, donald trump and i think that there were problems in 2020. we've talked about it. i'm happy to talk about it further. but you guys attack us for not believing in democracy. the most sacred right under the united states. democracy is the first amendment. when this is over, we need to shake hands. this election and the winner needs to be the winner. this has got to stop. it's tearing our country apart. the candidates were also asked about their bosses spending plans. the washington the wharton school estimates the harris economic plan will add 1.2 trillion to the deficit. trump's plan would add 5.8 trillion, one of the more surprising omissions the war in ukraine never came up walls in the democrats support ukraine's efforts to repel the russian invasion. vance has said the war is unwinnable, and trump, who
6:40 am
was impeached over holding up weapons to ukraine, said a few days ago ukraine no longer exists. ginger a lot to take away from that debate. thanks, scott. well, tonight another debate, this time in the race to replace outgoing congresswoman anna eshoo. this is district 16, which covers parts of the peninsula and the south bay. former san jose mayor sam liccardo faces off against assemblyman evan low. the debate is tonight at 7:00 live here at nbc bay area, and you can watch that as well on nbcbayarea.com. 639 new overnight oakland police responding to an apparent triple shooting just after midnight. it happened on bancroft and 77th in the eastmont neighborhood. officers told our photographer at the scene. three people suffered non-life threatening injuries so far, oakland police not confirming that information. well despite the many challenges for police and prosecutors, oakland mayor sheng thao
6:41 am
