>> president biden is in the carolinas today, he got an aerial tour of the damage earlier, the president also ordered 1,000 active duty troops to help with recovery in that area the white house announced he'll travel to affected areas in florida and georgia tomorrow. vice president kamala harris is in georgia today. she'll be talking about recovery efforts in that state later on. >> at least 175 people have died because of this storm, many communities still struggling to get basic supplies like water, food and electricity. ryan nobels is in augusta, georgia and antonia hylton is in asheville, north carolina, you've been talking with people at a supply distribution site, what are some of the biggest challenges they're facing in. >> reporter: you know, we got here at about 8:00 a.m. today and it's gotten busier and busier, in fact we had to create a second line, only one line

serving families coming through, they've expanded and doubled that operation, people need water, food, nonperishable foods, because they still don't have the ability to use their stoves or to boil water for example, they're asking for supplies for their infants, things like formula and diapers. so, you're seeing the full impact now five days out from all of this, it's still very real on the ground. take a listen to a conversation i had with one resident. >> i just try to look for the good people, it's so lovely to see the kids outside playing because there's no power and internet. they're forced to play with each other. i try to focus on that. >> reporter: if you have never been to asheville, that spirit you just shared with you there, that kind of attitude is the norm here, people coming

north carolina and tennessee. augusta got hit hard. they weren't prepared for it. it came with a lot of rain and wind. this house behind me had several trees fell on top of it. every house on this street that we're on met a similar fate. it's intermittent. one street, fine. another street, the kind of damage we're seeing here behind me. the recovery has been intermittent. some places have power. you go a mile in the other direction and there's no power to be had. that's one of the reasons you see vice president harris focusing her visit to this area, she'll meet with first responders, talk to some of the victims, she'll tour some of the extensive damage that took place here and send a message that the federal government is here to help that many people not only in augusta but people up and

down the east coast aren't getting to them fast enough. let's turn overseas now, israel's prime minister netanyahu is vowing to respond to iran. >> netanyahu said iran made, quote, a big mistake in firing roughly 180 missiles at israel. it comes as iran's new president arrived in qatar today and rally other asian countries to prevent quote, israeli crime. keir, prime minister netanyahu looks poised to respond to iran in some ways, but how could the holidays affect the timing of any action? >> reporter: you're right, prime minister netanyahu said israel will respond and honestly israel will. at the time that's right for it militarily. i don't think the holidays will have as much as an impact as the

attention, overall, though, what did you make of j.d. vance's performance and governor walz. >> that moment, kate, it's getting a lot of attention and a lot of that attention is coming from democrats, one of the governor's strongest moment of the night trying to prosecute the case against j.d. vance and of course his run mating donald trump on those election fraud lies and the refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election. the harris campaign cutting an ad. suggesting that threats to democracy are among the top issues driving them to the polls in the november this could give them a political advantage. as for senator vance in talking with folks on the republican side of the aisle they feel like, boy, the many interviews that he does, the many interactions that he has with members of media paid off big time last night because he confident, smooth, in command.

from an oakland congregation says many of his members are hunkered down in bomb shelters after that barrage of 200 or more ballistic missiles launched at israel from iran. the conditions will only get worse for those stuck in the middle east. and in this war, we talked to a retired israeli military general about the conditions there, and he does not sound optimistic about the fighting ending anytime soon. we are at war and it's going to be a long war. it's not going to stop here. as i said, israel really has an historical opportunity to deal directly with the huge threat of a nuclear umbrella to all the proxies iran has built. retired brigadier general amir avivi is seemingly endorsing the hard line approach taken by the israeli leadership and military, who say this is a historic chance to stop iran from developing nuclear weapons. but more and more civilians are caught up in the fighting, and

picket lines bringing shipping to a standstill. president biden released a statement encouraging both sides to return to the bargaining table and voiced his support for the rights of workers, while so far declining to get his administration involved in negotiations. several trade organizations had pushed for the president to declare this strike an economic emergency and force the longshoremen back to work. and legendary actor daniel day-lewis is coming out of retirement again to star in his son's new movie. he said he was retiring from acting in 2017. before that, he left the business from 1997 to 2000 and came back. now he's set to act in an upcoming film that he co-wrote with his son ronan, the story's exploring the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers. no word yet on a release date. a dad went through great lengths to get to his daughter's wedding. he attempted to take a two-hour drive from south carolina to tennessee while hurricane helene

was making its way through that area, after seven hours on the road he got stuck at a bridge that washed away, so he got out of his car and walked. he walked 17 miles before a trooper and a passer-by drove the remaining miles to make it in the church in time to walk his daughter down the aisle. as israel prepares for its response to yesterday's missile attack from iran, nbc news is getting a close-up look at some of damage, one missile came down feet away from an elementary school, it happened in central israel, no deaths or injuries were reported. raf sanchez shows us just how powerful the blast was. >> reporter: we're outside an elementary school in central israel. i want to walk you through the scene here, this is where one of those 181 iranian ballistic missiles came crashing down, this was a ten-foot crater.

killed in the occupied west bank when a piece of missile fell. the question now, how, when and at what scale will israel retaliate to this unprecedented attack? earlier today prime minister netanyahu meeting with his top intelligence and military officials, weighing that response and israeli official tells nbc news that israel will respond swiftly. they're determined to show to iran and the world that an attack like this will not go unanswered. after the last iranian missile barrage back in april there were five days in between the attack and then what was a very small-scale israeli response. an israeli official is indicating the response to come will be much larger, much more significant than that and the scale of it and how iran responds may determine whether this region is heralding towards

they both suffered injuries that two and a half years later they are still dealing with. but the new jersey superior court just ruled they can't sue uber because of the terms of service georgia agreed to. except, the couple says it wasn't georgia that clicked yes it was their 12-year-old daughter using her mom's ubereats app to order pizza. the couple were in an uber on their way home from dinner, the accident happened in an instant. >> we went right through the light, and there was a loud bang. and a hard crash. >> reporter: their driver ran a red light. the couple suffered multiple broken bones. georgia had internal injuries after the 2022 crash. >> they got me out on a stretcher and it was pouring rain on top of me. i could hear john calling to me from the other ambulance. >> what you have just described, there is emotional damage, too, isn't there? >> yeah, more than a person can imagine.

>> reporter: the couple wants to sue uber, but the new jersey superior court recently ruled they can't because georgia agreed to the company's terms of service, which includes something called an arbitration provision, waiving the right to a trial by jury in the case of an accident. but they say georgia didn't agree to the terms of use for the most recent update. it was her 12-year-old daughter using her mom's ubereats account. >> i think she was ordering a pizza, pizza delivery. >> and waiving in the process your right to a trial by jury if you got in an accident. >> right. >> reporter: the court ruled in part that because georgia agreed to previous versions of terms herself she was bound by them. the plaintiff agreed to uber's terms on three separate occasions, including when she first signed up in 2014. if they go to arbitration, it is confidential. their dispute is settled in private by a third party. the process often benefits companies facing liabilities. >> they won't get bad press. and an arbitrator is usually less likely to give out a big damages award than a jury of

someone's peers. >> reporter: the ruling comes just months after a man tried to sue disney for the wrongful death of his wife after she had an allergic reaction in a restaurant in disney world. the company said he was bound by the terms of service he agreed to on his disney+ streaming account. but in august, after the case got a lot of attention, the company changed course waiving arbitration, and saying with such unique circumstances as the ones in this case, we believe this situation warrants a sensitive approach to expedite a resolution. they hope their case could lead to changes in the law. >> i think that we need, as a society, to move to try to protect consumers. >> reporter: the they're going appeal this latest decision to new jersey's supreme court. their story a reminder to many of us to carefully read those terms of service agreements. uber tells us the driver involved in crash is no longer using the platform. back to you. >> stephanie gosk, thanks so
