now. at five, fleeing lebanon as airstrikes continue in the war torn region. we'll take you live with more on one man's bay area, one bay area man's race to get out to safety. and a new look at the devastation from colleen since that historic storm made landfall a week ago. local help one nonprofit is providing to those affected. plus, a troubling trend across the bay area. we have new video showing thieves taking an entire mail kiosk. the must see moments and reactions from residents. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this thursday morning i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. nice to have you, kris i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike ■inouye for a look at that traffic in just a little bit. but let's talk about the temperatures. we need to talk something. we need to talk. i'm just a broken record, talking about breaking records and it's still another day that's going to be really hot. and once
5:02 am
again, they've extended the excessive heat warning until tomorrow evening. so yeah, day after day we're saying the same thing. another hot one. and we're still in the 90s and triple digits. so here's a look at our high for today. we're up to 97 in santa rosa, 94 in hayward and in fremont. and it will still be over 100 degrees for morgan hill san martin gilroy. and in the inland east bay as well. we're going to see those temperatures remaining very hot for today. san francisco it's still pretty warm, not as hot as it has been with a high of 85 and taking it into the day tomorrow, at least for some of the coastal areas. there are some slight relief, and we're still going to have some really hot temperatures for the inland valleys. so we'll talk about what's ahead coming up. mike, you're tracking some emergency road work. had to do some guardrail repair on highway four westbound, which is your commute direction. but this is not the main bulk of the flow. that's starting over in antioch

without any issues. this is between 600 and 80 and interstate 80, or the coming skyway area. as we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic just popping up on the map right here, a disabled vehicle, a hazard on the upper east shore freeway. we'll check that. but those sensors are moving smoothly. good thing for these folks working in the cool evening. i mean, we know we have daytime temperatures that will soar once again, but so far, those roadway slowdowns are not really evident just yet. we'll check on the incident over in oakland. i think it's on eastbound 580. so against the commute coming out of the area. we'll have that coming up in just a couple of minutes. back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. so now we want to move to what is happening in lebanon. we know that there are continuing airstrikes and airstrikes are tearing up the region. israel now weighing its response to iran's missile attack right now, as more than a million people are displaced from the israeli assault on hezbollah. at the same time,

thousands of americans also trapped there today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. ginger, do we know anything about how these americans are managing to get out at this point? well, chris, we do know that about 100 americans and their families were on an evacuation flight that left recently. i would imagine that this may just be the beginning of americans getting out of lebanon. we also know that one u.s. permanent resident is among those dead now. nbc bay area spoke to a bay area man fearful that he and his family will get caught in the conflict. jonathan sr-1 is from san mateo, but has recently been in lebanon with his parents to visit family. they received notice from the american embassy to get a flight, and they rushed to get out. here he is talking to our jocelyn moran on their ordeal to do so. as we're packing our bags. the news was on and beirut started getting

is upsetting. and i know that, you know, given how fast the situation deteriorated in the last ten days, that the next 30 days or so are going to be very tough, you know, we're worried. but again, everybody here is very encouraging, telling us to leave. they're saying it's not safe. you have a way out. go, go back to america. now, jonathan says he hopes that there will be strengthening calls for a cease fire. he doesn't expect there to be any sort of de-escalation, but he does say that a cease fire may be able to provide some temporary relief for the civilians that are caught in the middle of this. from what we understand, he and his family have boarded their flight last night to head to istanbul. that is their next stop before heading back home to the bay area in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay has to be so much guilt knowing that you're doing the right thing by leaving if you can. but

5:21 am
in morgan hill and much of the east bay is going to see temperatures over 100 degrees again today. 101 in danville and pleasanton. oakland today 89. and it will be a little bit better near the coast with upper 70s and half moon bay. and daly city, 94, in redwood city and still very warm in san francisco, with mid 80s downtown and the north bay up to 100 degrees in sonoma, santa rosa and novato 97 degrees. in fact, let's keep an eye on santa rosa. what to expect over the next several days. more 90s ahead for the weekend, even into early next week. but then after that, we're going to get a cold front coming in a shift in the wind direction and finally, a little taste of fall there for the end of next week with some 70s in the forecast. but yeah, we do still have several more sweltering days for the inland valleys, including our weekend and into early next week. and san francisco is going to still be pretty warm, even for the city. and along the coast with 80s through saturday and next

week, we'll bring it back to the 70s. mike, you're tracking a couple of things in the east bay. yeah, i wanted to follow up. they did pop up on our map. right now i want to show the overall map looks great. no major issues. the altamont pass moves smoothly and steadily into livermore, where you're at speed all the way through the dublin interchange. we had eastbound 580. indeed, it was counter commute and say was because it just cleared the roadway and the grid from chp around 35th. no more slowing, as they had a quick traffic break for an earlier crash. no injuries there. over here. this is eastbound 80. so opposite your commute heading toward the carquinez bridge. disabled vehicle reported there. dropped a couple of barrels onto the roadway. so i'm watching for any follow up that's necessary. but light traffic flow shows up there. we go out of richmond. back to you. thank you. mike, it is 522 right now. an urgent warning to check your ticketmaster account tickets. people have bought are disappearing and being listed on resale sites right. that's next. on today in the bay, our consumer investigative team has advice on how to get your

is today in the bay good morning. 530 right now on your thursday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. hopefully he is staying cool because we know the heat continues and that is our top story. this hot weather. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect today. more heat. and yesterday it was pretty intense across the bay area with some record high temperatures set. and today it's going to be very much warm once again. the excessive heat warning continues through tomorrow evening, although there will be a slight drop in some of the coastal temperatures, the inland valleys are still going to be very hot. and then when we take a look at what we're expecting today versus what's the record high, we will be close in santa rosa. we'll see a high there of 97 and san francisco 85. and oakland will be in the upper 80s and livermore. we may be close to a record there as well, but tying
5:32 am
the record in san jose. so we'll be tracking these numbers very closely as this heat wave continues. and we're also going to see, unfortunately, more heat heading into the weekend. back to you. we'll try to prepare for it. do our best. our coverage continues with today in the bay's bob redell, who is live in the tri-valley. and bob, i understand a lot of people, they're understandably staying inside trying to stay cool, but this is really affecting local businesses. anecdotally, that is what we're hearing. good morning to you, chris and laura. as terry was mentioning, national weather service has issued another excessive heat warning today for the bay area, which means places like livermore, where i'm at here in the tri-valley, could hit or even exceed 100 degrees again today. yesterday, here in downtown livermore, behind me, people celebrated witches night out. it's an annual event that brings out a lot of people to celebrate halloween. the owner of the fat pigeon bar, which is again
5:33 am
behind me, says that if this event didn't take place, things might be a little different in terms of business because of yesterday's heat wave. so he was grateful. unfortunately not the case in pleasanton at the mission plaza there. the manager of fiesta tacos says his business has been struggling during this heat wave. the owner of an indian cuisine restaurant in the same plaza says the heat is making customers opt for takeout instead of eating at the restaurant. the customers were not coming much outside. you know, they are like sticking to their homes only even you can cover, you know, the traffic outside. also there's like there's not like much cars, you know, the passing here because of the heat waves. this is horrible way to hot, way too hot. i'm melting. there's no people right here. you see. they're empty because people don't want to stay out here anymore. for people in the south bay insult to injury as a widespread power outage left parts of sunnyvale and los altos
5:34 am
with no access to their electric fans or air conditioning, the power went out just before 6:00 last night. for more than 12,000 customers. and remember, 6:00 temperatures were still high. but from what we see on pg&e online outage map, it does appear that that power is back on. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell today in the bay. good for them because that is a tough one. thanks, bob. you can track the temperatures on our free nbc bay area app. you can see just how hot it's expected to get in your neighborhood. find it at your local app store. now let's take a look at that morning commute with mike. 530 how's it going on this thursday morning? everything was moving well, just heard about an incident here. i'm concerned. these taillights heading in toward the tunnel at treasure island across the bay bridge reports this area. there may be a disabled vehicle or maybe a minor crash. not sure. sounds like things are just off of the roadway, but the distraction could slow things down again, moving smoothly on this live camera, we're looking
5:35 am
at those sensors and we do see a little slowing coming up toward treasure island on those sensors. again, that might be pretty typical. as the volume builds, we'll continue to track that the bridge is notified about that. we have eastbound 80. still have that report of the truck on the shoulder. and having dropped a couple of barrels, i didn't know if they'd have to do a traffic break. we're watching. we do see a lot of slowing coming over here on westbound highway four off of cummings skyway. folks heading to the carquinez bridge probably take that route anyway, but we are looking at a slowdown temporarily. i don't know if there's a crew in the area. i didn't read about one, but i'll do some further investigation. i'll let you know if there's an extended problem. the rest of the bay looking pretty standard. a little start for the slowing. the first burst in san jose right here. back to you. all right. thank you. mike. turning now to decision 2024 and a new controversy in the race to replace south bay congresswoman anna eshoo. candidate evan low is blasting a federal election complaint filed by an advocacy group claiming he illegally used funds from his state campaign committee to pay for political ads in his bid for the house seat. the ads include the one

you see right here on your screen, the group defend the vote also claims this ad was distributed online to voters outside lowes district. the video ends with lowes saying, quote, thank you district 26 for fighting with me. let's keep california moving forward. that is his assembly district. the ad also has a disclaimer saying paid for by evan low for assembly 2024. in a statement, lowe's campaign manager says in part, quote, sam liccardo campaign has once again put up his endorser to file false and meritless complaints to distract from sam's own ethical failings. the former mayor of san jose of san jose is lowe's opponent in the congressional race. it's also important to note that defend the vote is endorsing former mayor sam liccardo. we reached out to the liccardo campaign for a response. we have not gotten one. meanwhile, their much anticipated debate last night was abruptly canceled. liccardo withdrew hours before, citing laryngitis. nbc bay area

5:39 am
in the upper 60s as we go into the evening. and then we also have the stanford game that's going to start out with some mid to upper 80s as we go into the afternoon, making it close to 90 degrees. so stay hydrated and wear that sunscreen. and then we'll wrap it up this weekend with a 49ers who is still going to be hot with those highs in the low 90s throughout the end of the game. and mike, you've been watching the commute seems pretty smooth as of right now. yeah, let's start over here at the richmond bridge where things are getting a little more volume as we expect more headlights moving nicely off the east shore freeway. no delays. 580 itself has had overnight work, and we will remind you that there is one last night of the overnight roadwork. one lane in each direction continues tonight on that cross 580 over here, westbound 80. we continue to watch for any slowing. we do see some bunching up and that some of that's the optical illusion. as you make the bend around toward treasure island. but reports of a disabled vehicle in this area still watching for any major disruption. those speed sensors look like they're actually moving better now. they may be moving slowly down the

decline in towards san francisco. we'll give you updates and let you know if there's any problems. a traffic break looks like it's going on southbound 101 heading toward the golden gate bridge. typical for the crew to clear from the marin side and a little build on the incline. that's also typical for the metering lights to be turned on right about now, we're showing a smooth drive. your usual suspects 680 moves nicely off the dublin interchange, but there is some bunching up right around highway 84. that may be the blend that comes in as more volume hits the tri valley. no major concerns here or through hayward onto the san mateo bridge across the spans and your usual slowing for north 101 in san jose. back to you. thank you mike. well, a lot of bank of america customers were very worried yesterday. they logged on only to see a $0 balance in their accounts. ahead on today in the bay the company's response this morning. plus helping our climate in crisis. the progress. one first of its kind reusable cup program is now making in the north bay. and the white house and governors are working hard this morning to try to solve all the problems

i think that disabled vehicle we talked about westbound on the bay bridge. well it looks like that report caused them to slow down those metering lights as soon as they started activating them. there is a backup here at the toll plaza. we'll track the backup in the east bay and see how it affects your drive into the city. thanks so much, mike. 543 right now, president biden will be in georgia and florida today surveying the damage from hurricane helene. scott mcgrew. he and vice president kamala harris are going to promise whatever the states need to recover. that's exactly right. and which is, you know, 100% what presidents say right after a disaster. and largely, they've kept their word in the past. vice presidents don't tour disasters as often, but of course, we're in an election season. and vice president harris has been taking a greater role in white house affairs. harris met with families in augusta, georgia, and announced the white house had approved 100% of the emergency funding. the governor of georgia had asked for. president biden met
5:45 am
with the governor of north carolina in raleigh for a briefing. hurricane helene has been a storm, literally of historic proportions. the damage is still being assessed, but and many people are still unaccounted for. so i'm here to say the united states, the nation has your back, the nation has your back. we're not leaving until you're back on your feet completely. there's a lot of work that's going to need to happen over the coming days, weeks and months. and the coordination that we have dedicated ourselves to will be long lasting. to get families, to get residents, to get neighborhoods back up and running. biden has also directed a thousand active duty soldiers to aid the north carolina national guard to distribute supplies and warns the recovery will cost billions upon billions. the judge in donald trump's january sixth trial has released special prosecutor jack smith's legal briefing about the case. in it, smith lays out
5:46 am
specific evidence against trump, evidence the former president knew he had lost but tried to overturn the election anyway. trump resorted to crimes, says the legal brief. now note that's the prosecutor saying that, not the court, which has still yet to rule on guilt. the reason this report exists at all is because the supreme court decided earlier this year some actions by presidents cannot be prosecuted, not for what the high court calls official acts, even if that act would normally be considered a crime, can't be prosecuted. and in fact, the accusation can't be brought up in court. so that forced smith to drop some of the charges against trump and then list out all the other things trump did that smith says are non-official acts and thus crimes that can be prosecuted. there's a third mushy category presumptive immunity. the judge is going to have to rule on those. bottom

opportunity to recover during the overnight. and then it goes right back to the 90s and 100 degrees. let's check out fairfield, one of our hotter spots where we are going to still see triple digits through sunday and monday, 96 degrees, but then a 10 degrees drop in those highs on tuesday and wednesday. it looks so much better by the end of next week. so still several more days of hot temperatures. and the national weather service has extended the excessive heat warning through tomorrow evening. it may also get extended into saturday as well, so it's still going to be really hot in the inland areas. we could see a bit more relief in san francisco by sunday, and then next week it's looking much better with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s. mike, you have another look at the bay bridge. yeah, in fact, we have a clearer look at what's causing the slowdown. look at this folks. jamming up the incline all the way over here to the bend where we thought we saw slowing. and indeed flashing lights. the reports are this disabled vehicle on the span or in the
