questions. yeah. laura said may. may see a break. we're going to have to wait every single day. they're extending the excessive heat warning. so it's happened again. here we go. we're at saturday. i think it may last until either sunday or monday because we're still not seeing this heat backing off. and we're looking at a lot of these areas in pink dealing with near record high temperatures once again, as our highs head for the triple digits and even slightly above that looking currently, we are still seeing a wide range in temperatures with upper 40s in santa rosa, it's 52 in sonoma. those are the cooler spots compared to what we have elsewhere with 60s and 70s. as you get ready to head out the door and then once again, it's going to be hot. the heat risk index continues to be major to extreme due to the relentless heat that has been lasting day after day, and so that really makes it harder for your health
5:03 am
to recover. as our temperatures go back today to the upper 90s for livermore and 100 for gilroy, upper 90s for the north bay, we may see the heat cranking up a little bit more for tomorrow in the inland valleys. we'll watch those small changes in our temperatures and talk about when we may see some relief coming up. but, mike, you are tracking a traffic break in the east bay. yeah, and this may be a bigger issue for contra costa county. if it doesn't clear soon. all lanes temporarily blocked. there's a traffic break and a crash westbound 24 coming into orinda out of the lafayette area. you're going to slow down. this is outside the caldecott. it's shy of the caldecott tunnel around camino pablo. debris in lanes. and they had a tow truck already. one way of offset take them too long to get there. we're waiting for a second, and i'll let you know if they're able to open even at least one lane right here on highway 24. is the problem coming down out of walnut creek? we have a lot of folks coming off of highway four with the early start out of antioch, pittsburg bay, point all moving smoothly. 24 is the
5:04 am
problem. point heading into orinda for the westbound commute direction, the rest of contra costa county and the rest of the map shows nothing unexpected outside of highway 24. back to you. thank you mike. we are now one month away from election day and vice president kamala harris travels to battleground michigan today after making a pitch to republicans and independent voters alongside liz cheney in wisconsin, former president donald trump heads to georgia to tour damage caused by hurricane helene today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington, and there will be no rest for anybody in the next month. alice. kris. we are in the stretch now where really these nominees are going to be picking up the pace on the campaign trail. as you noted, former president trump has refocusing on the hurricane storm damage zone today. as vice president, harris is looking for supporters from across the aisl. former president trump heads to georgia today to again survey devastation from hurricane

helene as vice president. harris travels to michigan after rallying in wisconsin alongside former republican congresswoman liz cheney. i have never voted for a democrat, but this year i am proudly casting my vote for vice president kamala harris. cheney voted to impeach former president trump over his role in the january 6th capitol attack. vice president harris appealing to other republicans to back he, arguing the former president cannot be trusted. he who violated the oath to uphold the constitution of the united states of america and make no mistake, he who, if given the chance, would violate it again. that after a new special counsel court filing asserts former president trump should not be immune from prosecution for his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, the former president calls the filing political. this was a

weaponization of government. rallying in michigan last night, he doubled down on false claims of a stolen election. it was a rigged election. you have to tell kamala harris. that's why i'm doing it again. if i thought i lost, i wouldn't be doing this again. voters divided. i think trump has destroyed the republican party. do you think that liz cheney speaks for the republican party? no. absolutely not. reporter americans weighing the impact of the last election as they prepare to vote in the next. the harris campaign is launching new digital ads aimed at potentially persuadable republicans, while former president trump is preparing to travel tomorrow to butler, pennsylvania, returning to the site where a gunman tried to assassinate him and another rally back in july. back to you, chris. and for the first time, thank you very much, alice. back here in the bay area, the congressional debate is back.
5:07 am
assemblyman evan low and former san jose mayor sam liccardo are running to replace longtime peninsula congresswoman anna eshoo. on wednesday, we were supposed to air the debate, but it was canceled. liccardo's campaign reached out, saying he had to delay due to laryngitis. but we have a new date. the debate has been rescheduled for next friday, october 11th, and you can watch it right here on nbc bay area at 7 p.m. it will be moderated by our own raj mathai. one man under arrest, accused of firing at police officers. it happened at about 8:00 last night at ninth and mission streets in san francisco. police say plainclothes officers were chasing an armed suspect, but no one was struck by the gunfire in a statement, chief bill scott says soon after officers managed to capture the man with the help of responding deputies. a traffic alert for commuters this weekend, caltrans scheduling a full weekend closure of the central freeway connector ramp on northbound 101 in san francisco. the map on your screen shows that closure. crews will make emergency repairs to

the freeway barrier rails. all lanes of the connector ramp will be closed starting tonight at 10 p.m. and 10 p.m. it will open back up at 5 a.m. the detour will be at the seventh street offramp later this morning. angry parents and teachers in the south bay plan to demand accountability after the abrupt firing of santa clara county's superintendent of schools board trustees in a closed door session this week terminated superintendent mary ann dewan without cause. one source tells nbc bay area that dewan's firing was the result of many issues and in fact, it comes in the wake of ongoing reporting by nbc bay area's investigative unit surrounding allegations of misuse of funds and the mishandling of worker complaints and claims of retaliation. and there is, in fact, currently an open investigation into funding for the county's head start program. one of the parents who first raised questions about that applauds the board's actio.
5:09 am
i believe in doing what's right and getting justice for any wrongdoing. i'm just satisfied and i just want i just want parents to know that it is very important for them to advocate. dewan did not respond to our requests for comment, but organizers of today's rally claim the controversial firing was made without public input. they are now calling for a public hearing that rally is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. moving the bay area forward with a new place to get out and about and active in san jose. today, san jose city leaders are announcing new funding for a park in the spartan keyes neighborhood south of downtown near san jose state. the city is getting $4.5 million toward construction from the national park service. senator alex padilla announced that 15 local governments like this one in california, are getting a total of $95 million to upgrade outdoor recreation spaces in underserved communities. it is
5:10 am
nice to be able to get out and about, but it has been so warm. a lot of people trying to look for places to cool down. taking a live look outside this morning carey is standing by to tell us just how hot it's going to get again today. yeah, it will be another hot one. you're making your plans around the temperatures and yesterday we did set some more records, making it up to 101 in san jose. the old record was 97. so we went way above and beyond that. we tied the record in salinas and even farther south we saw some record highs, but it has been so warm and we've seen a lot of temperatures very close to the record. and so we are looking at a nice cool start this morning. san mateo at 63 degrees. it's 59 in san francisco and 64 in walnut creek. but then when we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, it's going to be another hot one. making it into the mid to upper 90s for the south bay. some triple digits in a few spots, and we're up to 100 in antioch, while oakland will
5:11 am
be in the mid 80s near the coast. that's where people have been going to escape the inland heat, and it will be in the mid to upper 70s for today. 93 in palo alto, in san francisco, temperatures will range from 60s to low 80s. and while it's been all over the map across the bay area, so, mike, how are the gas prices looking? you know, it's a group effort here with gasbuddy.com. this is a group effort. and you've reported one spot under $4. we'll visit sam's club in vacaville, kris gives a round of applause. you can drive all the way up to vacaville, spend all that extra gas to get a couple cents. under four bucks is a great deal, though. the power drive there is over at nut tree, so watch for that over there folks. as you travel through the area just off of nut tree parkway there in pleasant hill, the best there is 413 at arco on pleasant hill road and in cupertino, same price of 413, but a new best for silicon valley. it's at great gas on north de anza boulevard. talking about that collective effort. it's gasbuddy.com. you can get those prices or you can report the updates as well on the
5:12 am
roadway. i think we have a good update as we had that crash and a full stop for the traffic break of west 24. those sensors lit up again and i think everything's out of the roadway. no major injuries. in fact, no injuries reported at all for this crash right around camino. pablo, that alternate. that's good, because the alternate is highway four to the north. that's a long way around. back to you. thank you. mike uber going autonomous head on today in the bay. the new partnership. the rideshare company is locking in. and what it could mean for your next ride. plus celebrating hispanic heritage the way the 49ers are helping lift up two bay area latino students and the special performance set to take place at this weekend's game. much more news ahead. you're watching today in the bay.

want to get away. well, maybe take a trip to the beach this weekend. heading down to monterey. will drastically change. the temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s this weekend. while the valleys and much of the bay area still headed for the triple digits. so we'll talk about the range in our temperatures and what's ahead coming up. yeah. what's ahead of these folks with these tail lights across 92? the san mateo bridge eventually gets to half moon bay along the coast. kerry is talking about maybe a little relief from the heat, and i think a lot of folks will be heading there over the course of this friday. right now, this
5:16 am
morning's commute traffic moving smoothly. we talked about higher numbers for the temperatures and bigger numbers heading to the beach. let's see the other numbers in the business world with silvana. i'm silvana now from cnbc wall street is set for a flight open ahead of the september jobs report, which could provide more clues as to what the federal reserve does next. with interest rates cut by a quarter or half a point in november, at the next meeting. now forecasts call for roughly 150,000 jobs to have been added to the economy last month. that's slightly more than in august, while unemployment is seen holding steady at 4.2%. data out this week has shown the economy remains solid, even though it's also slowing the markets falling. yesterday, with the dow closing down more than 180 points, the dow the nasdaq and the s&p are on track to snap a three week winning streak. uber is teaming with self-driving vehicle startup ride to roll out both self-driving cars and delivery robots in select cities. the

service will launch initially with sidewalk robots on uber eats in austin, texas, before expanding to dallas and to jersey city, new jersey. that's later this year, and then multiple cities in 2025. customers with a qualifying delivery or ride on the uber app will have the option to have the order fulfilled by a delivery robot or self-driving vehicle, and meta ceo mark zuckerberg jumping ahead of amazon founder jeff bezos into second place on the bloomberg billionaires index, zuckerberg's bet on the metaverse finally appears to be paying off, pushing his net worth to more than $206 billion. that's about $1 billion more than bezos and 50 billion behind elon musk. shares of meta are up more than 20% since the company reported earnings at the end of july. kris, laura. wow. pretty penny. all right. to get richer. all right. thank you so much. well, the 49ers like nbc bay

area celebrating hispanic heritage, local students being nominated by the for team the nfl's latino youth heritage award, the winner of the award gets $25,000. a nice chunk of change. here's a live look at levi's stadium, where the niners will host the arizona cardinals on sunday. the team recently posted a video celebrating hispanic heritage, and we recently talked with nominee mia sanchez. the niners nominated her for her work in the classroom and as a student athlete, playing both tennis and flag football at aptos high school. she also dreams of becoming a first generation college student and just want to thank my coaches, my teammates for like, helping me out and like supporting the community and just being there. mia is one of seven children supported by a single mom, but mia also works. she pitches in on family expenses. she says winning this award would be great, but she's just honored to be nominated by her 49ers. all right. exactly.
5:19 am
congratulations. wow. that's cool. great. that's really sweet. all right, they say the niners game this weekend. it's going to be a hot one. yeah. and arizona is going to be right at home. so i thought that too. yeah. they're going to have kind of the advantage of being acclimated to the dry temperatures. dry. yeah. you know unfortunately we're going to have them bring their weather with them when they come to the game on sunday. it's going to be in the 90s, the start. some of the models are bringing the temperatures into the upper 90s throughout the game. so it is going to be really hot even for the fans just sitting in the stands with the sun beaming down on you. and there is not much of a wind. i know a lot of people are going to try to escape the heat and head to the coast. half moon bay starts out the morning in the upper 50s. at noon. it is 67 degrees and only headed for the mid to upper 70s for today. a quick rise and cooldown of those temperatures, while san jose will reach a high of 96 this afternoon. gilroy back to
5:20 am
the triple digits and much of the east bay will be in the upper 90s and 100 degrees. as we take a look at these numbers, this is actually a little bit lower compared to what we've seen throughout much of the week. and then for some of the coastal areas, we're getting some slight relief there in san mateo, expected to reach up to 88 degrees and 93 in palo alto. in san francisco, the temperatures for the past few days have ranged about 30 to 40 degrees across a short distance, so it's really hard to pinpoint exactly what you'll feel. but in the outer sunset, at least, it will be cooler there. well, in the north bay we're seeing temperatures still in the mid to upper 90s for this afternoon, making saturday plans. it's going to be slightly hotter compared to today. unfortunately, in concord it will be 103 degrees 100 in napa and in gilroy we'll see those temperatures also increasing to 104. in san francisco, we're also going to see a slight warm up into the upper 80s. and then going into the day on sunday,
5:21 am
it's another hot one all across the bay area. and that major to extreme heat risk continues into about monday. and then we start to see some relief for the middle of next week. and it looks like we could see things coming down to the mid 80s inland low 80s by thursday. and for san francisco it's going to be in the low 80s today, upper 80s tomorrow, and sunday. and then on monday it's starting to feel much more comfortable. but this heat wave has been relentless and it continues for the next few days. and mike, you have a few incidents on the map. yeah, it's early on a friday so we have lighter traffic. but we do have those little blips happening even on this friday right around mare island for west 37 on the map, we still have the incident. i believe it's still on the shoulder for west 24 around camino. pablo. no more problems after early traffic break there. this is eastbound 580 or westbound 80, which would be your commute direction at central. disabled vehicle may be blocking the slow lane. no slowing shows up on the sensors, but there may be right
5:22 am
at that scene over here. the golden gate bridge, an incident reported just shy of the toll plaza where we have the camera, haven't seen any problems, and i've watched these cars travel without any delay or without lane changes heading into the city. just note there may be a crew near the toll plaza for the next few coming into san francisco from marin county. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a nice smooth drive south bay continuing all the way down and through san martin. northbound 101 has no slowing back to you. thank you mike. well, coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. we've just closed the books on the third quarter, and i'm happy to report we've beat analyst expectations because we're getting people big money back. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura

5:25 am
a team is doing something similar today. consumer investigator chris chmura is here with a look at our balance sheet. happy friday at nbc. bay area responds and telemundo 48 respond to our cash flow is strong with lots of cash flowing back to you. so far this year, we've helped return $904,000 to viewers like you. today i have a pair of recent cases to share. let's start with telemundo. alejandra in san jose paid $1,775 for a las vegas vacation rental, but no dice. the place was filthy with insects and
5:26 am
looked nothing like the host's listing photos. alejandra went to a hotel instead and wanted her money back. the rental website didn't help with consumer investigator arlene fernandez. you bet. arlene got alejandra $1,775 back, plus a $500 credit for a future reservation. all right, now to nbc. bay area responds. we're talking about amelita in south san francisco. she flagged $1,559 in fraudulent charges on her checking account. the bank said she spent money at a store in the midwest using apple pay. no. emily is here. not in the midwest. and she doesn't even have apple pay. still, the bank declined to clear the bogus charges until we stepped in. now case closed. amelita owes zero. if you have refund runarounds and customer service slip ups, our interest is high. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great weekend. we will now that he

saved as much money. there you have it. 526 right now. coming up, top stories that we're following for you today, including barriers going up in one san francisco neighborhood. the reason they're now being put up and why some neighbors say they don't agree. plus, police confirm that a san jose city council member is under investigation for possible criminal wrongdoing. the response from that council

a south bay city council member. we are live with more on the investigation that is underway and the illegal activity he's now being accused of. plus his response to those allegations and trapped inside the coliseum. the lockdown, which caused a traffic nightmare and a delay at last night's hans zimmermann concert. plus, this has been very hot. i know we had i don't remember an october being this hot. now the heat persists and meteorologist kari hall has more on the heat warning in place for today. and the extension. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this friday. free friday morning. it's really hot. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at that forecast. another hot one. although a slight dip in
5:31 am
temperatures. you probably won't feel it. you probably won't feel it. we're still under an excessive heat warning for much of the bay area, and it will continue into the weekend as well. so no relief there as we take a look at what we're expecting here. our temperatures starting out fairly mild this morning, but our air quality for much of the week has been suffering with unhealthy air quality. but today it's not a spare the air alert day. it is still going to be moderate and looking a bit of a milky white look to the sky with a little bit more haze and our temperatures will be close to records. we may tie the record in san jose, but elsewhere very hot, but most likely below a record high. and mike, you've been taking a look at the golden gate bridge. yeah, the lighting is a little tough right here. not because of that haze. it's just because of our iris on our camera. but i wanted to show those lights. maybe we can show you closer that those lights coming to the bottom of the screen are southbound. and at the top of the screen, those two
5:32 am
lights there, those are the robin williams tunnel. somewhere along that stretch, there was an incident. i was looking for it. don't see a problem. there was a crew traveling north, moving those cones without any problems there. the sensors stay green. the only change at the top. a little more slowing out of vallejo. mare island. typical for 37. also typical for friday. no real slowing anywhere else. we look at contra costa county into alameda county for vasco road, traveling south between the counties, you're at your minimum basically 17 minutes there. highway four moves nicely out of antioch all the way into concord. 580 a little slowing out of the altamont. then you're at the limit toward the dublin interchange. you can see all those green sensors south bay does show a little bit of break tap starting traditional 101 in san jose back to you. thank you mike. san jose city council member is now under investigation for possible sex related crimes today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from outside of police headquarters this morning. bob, i understand the council member is responding this morning. correct. good morning to you, laura and chris. we're talking about san jose city councilmember omar torres, who
5:33 am
denies any wrongdoing and says that he, in fact, is the victim in this matter. nbc bay area has confirmed that san jose police served councilmember torres with a search warrant yesterday in connection with a criminal investigation. now, a source tells us torres was detained as officers took his cell phone and they took electronics from other locations as well. people familiar with the matter say torres is alleged to have committed sexual misconduct with a minor, including soliciting inappropriate pictures of minors. he has also been investigated for an incident that occurred while he was attending the democratic convention. now, torres represents district three, which includes much of downtown san jose. the 42 year old was elected in 2022, and was the first openly gay latino member of city council. last night, torres office released a statement that reads in part, quote, today i was wrongfully detained and questioned by detectives regarding baseless allegations. let me be
5:34 am
absolutely clear. these accusations are entirely false. i cooperated fully with sjpd and turned over my passwords without issue, as i have nothing to hide. this detention was based on misinformation provided to law enforcement in response to a police report i filed against an individual for extortion and stalking and is a clear act of retaliation from this person. i want to be clear that i am the victim in this matter. it's heartbreaking that my family, my partner, my team and myself have to respond to such unfounded and defamatory allegations. while these attempts to discredit me are deeply troubling, they will not deter my commitment to you and our community. in an email, san jose police confirmed the investigation is underway involving a member of city council and add quote, the investigation is active and ongoing. sjpd says they hope to provide us an update at a later date. we also reached out to san jose mayor matt mason's office
5:35 am
for comment and was told, quote, since it's an active investigation, you'll have to reach out to pd. reporting live here at san jose police headquarters, bob redell today in the bay. the investigations take a while, but, you know, certainly people want to know now. so thank you, bob. we'll continue to follow this story both on air and online. and you can download our free nbc bay area app to stay up to date with the latest information. now to a live look at the oakland arena. and so far, police are not saying what led to last night's lockdown ahead of a concert there, fans arriving to see composer hans zimmer were held up for, well, more than an hour after the gates and doors closed and no one was allowed to enter or leave. some were stuck in their cars outside the coliseum parking lot, leading to big backups on surrounding streets. other fans were stuck in a lockdown inside the venue. police will only say there was some kind of security incident. we spoke with one frustrated fan waiting outside. it's been about an hour and a half and so they
5:36 am
just keep updating us every ten minutes, saying that they're handling some security incident and they'll let us in as soon as it's ready. some fans gave up and left before the show ever started. zimmer is scheduled to play a second show at the arena next wednesday. well, san francisco's mission district is putting up traffic barriers on capp street in order to stop sex work, only to have it appear two streets over. now that street is going to get similar barriers as well. the sfmta voted this week to give shotwell street similar treatment as capp street. it says its new temporary mid-block barriers are going in for 18 months between 19th and 21st streets, with temporary intersection diverters. the new barriers will be installed as early as next week. people who live and work in the area. they're a bit split over how to tackle the issue. i would assume it's just moving people around. it's not changing any enforcement. it's just making it more inconvenient in certain
5:37 am
places. i have my wife. i have my daughter, and i'm not comfortable that. supervisor hillary ronen says she will. she pushed for the capp street bollards. she says shotwell is a different street. she adds the age old issue in the mission is far more complicated and deserves more solutions. cleanup is underway at a walnut creek store following a smash and grab robbery happened just before 5:00 last night at luxury consignment store labels on north main street. witnesses say a group of men ran into the business with sledgehammers. they smashed several cases, making off with jewelry and other items. we spoke with a woman who works as a server at a restaurant across the street. she says she saw the men jump into a car and drive away. it's just like it's just crazy. this would happen like downtown walnut creek. like right here where i work, where i am, like every day. it's just, like, terrifying. the owners of labels didn't speak with us, but nearby businesses say they're looking at their surveillance video to give to police in hopes of
5:38 am
catching the men. happening today, governor gavin newsom will hold a virtual news conference to announce new funding and accountability measures to address unhoused encampments. he says the goal is to help people experiencing homelessness across the state. that news conference starts at 11:00 this morning. we'll update you on our midday news. this weekend, get ready for a full day of fun and soccer as we celebrate copita telemundo soccer festival. it's a free event open to the entire community at bouchette field on roosevelt avenue in redwood city. there will be soccer games to live music, delicious food, and cultural performances, and it all kicks off at 10:00 on sunday morning. also this weekend, by the time cal's football team hosts miami tomorrow night, it will be a long day for some fans. that's because uc berkeley hosting espn's college game day. that's cool. yeah. work crews have been preparing the stage. game day airs before the crack of dawn, starting at 6 a.m. the game will
5:39 am
probably end, they say about 11 p.m. oh, jeez. yeah, so. but it's always fun. it's really exciting to have those espn game day things. so let's talk about what you should. where will fans see some big temperature swings as they make out this day long deal? lots of sunscreen and water, i would imagine. yeah, absolutely. because in the morning when you get there in berkeley, it's going to start out in the mid 60s and we will have a nice cool morning. but then quickly those temperatures will start to ramp up and you'll want to start peeling off some of those layers as already at noon will be in the upper 80s. and then at the time that kickoff begins, it will be in the low 80s as well. after hitting some low 90s during the middle of the day, and then we're back down to the mid 70s by the end of the game tomorrow night. so that is a long day. if you're going to stanford game, it's going to be in the low 90s there. it is going to be hot during the middle of the day. and of course the sunscreen and hydration will be very important. but then in san jose it's going to be even hotter.
5:40 am
we're talking upper 90s here for the football game throughout the day, and we're also going to see those temperatures remain warm. we also have hardly strictly bluegrass in san francisco. expect it to be in the upper 70s there at golden gate park, but making it up to 90. so we don't typically see this kind of heat there for especially a day long festival, weekend long festival. and it's still going to be very warm on sunday. but if you're looking at something cooler to do, head out early in the morning to the sausalito boat show. it will be in the low 60s and making it into the mid 70s. and mike, you're also talking about the weekend. yeah. what it means right now is it means traffic volume is light. so as we take a look at our maps, we'll see that highway 37 at the top of the screen right here shows a little more slowing. but just like friday, the lighter traffic is around the rest of the bay, so no problem for highway four. let's talk about what we see ahead now at cal's game day, we talked about that norcal game day. but cal has a game and espn will be there for game day. that means bart trains are allowed to get there early.
5:41 am
they're starting at 5 a.m. because they want to have the bay area represent for those crowds that will be there. so note that for the bart trains, a little change in service. bart.gov changing the flow here, getting into san francisco. we told you about this earlier in the show. 101 will not continue all the way over toward 101 through the city. you'll have to exit at seventh off of eastbound 80, then loop back around. that will be a lot of traffic onto that surface street going on. starting tonight, all the way in through monday morning as they work on that retainer repair. so that's going on. 101 what caltrans advises is, folks, take 280 up and then take 19th through the city. but we know that's a crowded way in through the city. so that will just add more traffic flowing into and through golden gate park. just note that if you're traveling north through that portion of san francisco, meanwhile, if you're traveling south on 680, it's not a full closure. but we do have down to two lanes southbound south of acosta all weekend starting tonight through monday, and easy alternate to avoid the slow down on the freeway would be san ramon road. but again, that's just a couple lanes there as well. note south of 680 will be an issue through
5:42 am
this portion, but the alternate is a lot longer, so you can at least take the road and plan on some delays there. back to you. thanks, mike. 541 right now, controversy for san jose state university multiple schools forfeiting rather than play their scheduled games against the women's volleyball team coming up on today in the bay, the recent claim made from inside the team now generating so much heat, and the reason advocates are blasting it. plus, an unusual event called beats for boobs returns to san francisco this weekend after a long hiatus. silly name, but organizers say it raises awareness about something very serious. we'll tell you how you can take part and here's another edition of our school shoutout series. i'm ginger conejero saab. we're live at the velocity invitational. this car may look familiar to many of you, or to some of you. it is one of the ferraris that michael schumacher raced in in the f1, and i can barely get my knees inside. we have way more up ahead from the

5:46 am
this friday. well, it starts out in walnut creek at 65, but we'll be in the mid 90s again today. another really hot afternoon. and we're still looking at the heat cranking up for the weekend. so we'll take a look at all of our microclimates. and when we can finally turn off the air conditioning coming up. and we're looking at 80 interstate 80, the bay bridge standard for friday. we have a lighter build here. so no metering lights and no problems. however just heard about a crash getting into san francisco on this span and that may be affecting folks. they may have to turn on those metering lights. we'll track those sensors as you enter san francisco. thanks so much, kari and mike. it is 5:45 right now. san jose state women's volleyball team in colorado last night. lost a close one to colorado state. it follows some rough days for the team, including utah state becoming the latest school to forfeit an
5:47 am
upcoming game against the spartans. that was scheduled for tomorrow. it's all in protest over allegations of a transgender athlete on the spartans roster. four schools have now forfeited games against the spartans utah state, southern utah, wyoming and boise state. in each case, the schools did not reveal the exact reason for the cancellations. it all stems from one san jose state player's claim, made as part of a federal lawsuit filed by ncaa athletes over its transgender policies. those policies allow athletes to compete on women's teams under certain conditions. in the claim last week, the player stated she has a transgender teammate and that the player in question is unsafe for both the team and opposing teams, in part for her harder spikes. lgbtq advocates are blasting the lawsuit, arguing it only spreads more hate because when people hate a class of people, then they will
5:48 am
individually harm those people who are part of that class. that's where the real danger is. san jose state university released a statement saying in part, quote, we are committed to supporting our student athletes through these challenges and in their ability to compete in an inclusive, fair and safe and respectful environment. it is 547 right now, and october is breast cancer awareness month and a research fundraising effort is underway. but it also doubles as a big party. it's making a return to san francisco after a six year hiatus. it's called beads for boobs. it was last held once back in 2018 is when it was last held in 13 years. it raised $330,000 for breast cancer research. but founder giuliana faulkner took a break to lead national fundraising efforts for a foundation in washington, dc. she beats for boobs is making its return tomorrow, and she says they need volunteers and
5:49 am
some longtime friends who are involved in the local effort, and they're excited at the chance. i'd say 30 people immediately said, i'm in. i'm i, i'm in. and that community movement, it just validated that this was the time to bring it back to san francisco. so there will be an auction, food vendors and disco music all on tap for tomorrow's fundraiser. the party kicks off at the great northern along utah street. tickets are still available and run about $66 each. to learn more, you can find out how you can get tickets and make a tax deductible donation at beats for boobs .or. well, get ready to rev your engines this weekend. the sonoma raceway is calling all car enthusiasts to turn out and experience some of the rarest race cars in the world. oh, i'm jealous of this assignment today. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live at the sonoma raceway. i'm just seeing you sit
5:50 am
in that car earlier. i'm a big fan. it's got to be cool out there. museum coming to life. it is very cool, guys. good morning to you. i mean, when i was sitting in that car, i couldn't put my knees in. and you have an appreciation when you see these cars in action. but to understand what it takes to even sit in a car and then race it at 200 miles an hour. i mean, i don't know much about cars, but i am learning a lot. i'm going to bring in the founder of the velocity invitational, which is jeff o'neill. jeff, this is pretty incredible stuff here. i'm already learning so much about the history of cars and the rare cars that we have on display. talk to us about why it is different to come out to sonoma raceway this weekend. well, velocity is different because we show cars from just about every period throughout history. so starting in the early 1900s, all the way through contemporary cars. so supercars, you name it, we have it here. and this happens to be our formula one grouping some of the most famous formula one cars that have ever raced with incredible drivers. michael
5:51 am
schumacher in the ferrari. the starting over here, we've got jim clark in the lotus. but these are incredible cars from the most famous drivers in the world. all right. and i know that we were at the schumacher ferrari earlier and i even asked, oh can i touch it? i mean, these are you're like, yes you can. people can come out here and really learn about the history of racing. they really can. and for example, this car 1997 won in suzuka, japan. but michael schumacher, one of the most amazing drivers of all time. but guests can come to velocity. they can actually see the cars. they can even actually touch the cars while they're here, which is so rare. if you went to a formula one race, you couldn't do that. but we have many, many other things. wine pavilion tasting. you've got something for the kids. it is a family event. and you're also going to talk about the future of racing and something specific, which is encouraging young women to get into the sport. well, we want young. first of all, we want people engaged in the sport in general, but we really want to engage
5:52 am
more women in this sport. so we've tried to create an environment that is inviting. we have a panel discussion on saturday with five women drivers that are just absolutely amazing, and it will be moderated by. jose rimmer jose rimmer will be here. i know some incredible names. i know we're going to learn more. we've got about less than a minute. if you're trying to encourage women, just i'm raising my hand. this woman is now interested in cars because i have a different level of appreciation at this point. so, jeff, in the next hour, we're going to talk more about how this is a family event and kids can come as long as they bring their headphones. that is exactly right. they just need ear protection because we have a lot of amazing automobiles. everything from trans am to nascar. every period throughout history where you can showcase whatever the technology the current technology of the day is. so we've got 200 cars, we've got ten races every day, and if you want to take a break,
5:53 am
you can come into the wine pavilion. if you want to take a break with your kids, you can hop into the playground and play with cars. it is so amazing guy, and they're just talking about, you know, the people in their family that had a trans am at some point. i can't get my brother had a trans am. well, i'm going to check my lipstick. you did. he did. laura i was going to say i'm going to check my lipstick in this mirror and we'll see you guys back in the next hour with more history and more from the velocity invitational. yes, i am, i'm half the size of ginger. you should. your grandpa. your grandpa had one. my uncle had an open air. he was a race car driver. and he used to like we'd sneak into the, you know, and go see it. it was pretty cool. all right. well, yes, absolutely. but it's going to be hot this weekend. we're trying to find things to do, to find a way to cool off and get some relief. the heat is on going for the weekend and it's still going to be hot, mainly for the inland valleys. now looking way down the road and i feel like we have to keep kicking that can down the road. talking about some
5:54 am
relief. so we're starting out this morning with some upper 50s in san mateo, mid 60s in hayward and danville, but it's 49 in sonoma and in santa rosa. so there are some spots that have a nice little reset for the day. but we're back to those upper 90s and even 100 degrees for the south bay, 98 will be the high in east san jose, much of the east bay in the upper 90s as well. danville, concord, 98 degrees and 86. in oakland, the coast is where we're seeing a slight dip in those temperatures for today. half moon bay still pretty warm with some upper seconds, but compare that to the 93 we'll see in palo alto. 83 in the mission district in san francisco. and if you head over to the beach in the city, it's going to be in the upper 60s there in mill valley. it will be 89 degrees, while 98 in ukiah, we're also watching parts of the north bay today for an elevated fire danger. so heads up about that tomorrow. it in fact gets slightly hotter. so we're talking about more highs up to
5:55 am
or over 100 degrees upper 80s for san mateo and into san francisco and then on sunday, it's really only slightly better for some of the coastal areas, but the valleys are still going to have some excessive heat. let's take a look at brentwood. looking way ahead to when we may see a cool down. and once again, every day it seems the heat gets extended. it may not be until the end of next week when we have a day or two where we can give the air conditioning a rest, so it's still going to be hot into the weekend as well as early next week, with a very gradual cool down toward the end of next week. san francisco is going to see temperatures in the upper 80s through sunday, and then upper 70s on monday. looking much better there on wednesday once carl comes back off of vacation. all right, mike, you're tracking a crash on the bay bridge. yeah. we don't want to deter carl from coming back to the city, so i think the good news is that the bridge crash on ninth, the exit there
5:56 am
has cleared off the off ramp. and so everything should be moving smoothly as we see here, a smooth drive all the way into the city on westbound 80. the crash just outside of our camera view. and it looks like everything should be clear in the next couple of seconds. we don't see any major problems this friday does show that lighter volume we expect with just brake taps coming down past golden gate fields, and also highway 37 holding the slowdown there. typical at merritt islan. highway 4 look at that. you're at speed all the way out of antioch and down southbound 680 through walnut creek. and the interchange there. it's northbound 680, where that crew continues with their work possibly until 7:00. we've seen late, late in the 6:00 hour as all week as the northbound sides do start to clear up. no proble. southbound, though, southbound 880 to show a little build up again friday. lighter volume of traffic. northbound 101 shows a little bit of slowing toward mckee, and there may be a roadside fire along 87. i'll let you know if there's a problem in san jose. back to you. thank you. mike. happening now, the bird flu is now spreading to people in california. the
