from that we received by trying to silence us. are you the only one with these concerns? no. right now, at 6:00, the santa clara county superintendent of schools is fired. now, community leaders in the south bay are gathering to demand answers about that abrupt termination. the new details, our investigative unit uncovered
6:01 am
going all in on battleground states with just one month left to go until the election. liz cheney backs vice president kamala harris in a bipartisan push, while former president donald trump digs in. we're live from washington with the latest from the campaign blitz. and no relief in sight that heat warning remains in place today across the bay area and it's causing some closures. we're tracking the impact of this heat wave as we head into the weekend. this is today in the bay. thanks for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez. i'm here for marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike, see if it's light out there. the weather. it's certainly pretty heavy these days. yeah. and it's all we've been talking about. it's been so hot. and we remember october heat waves. but they don't normally last this long and aren't this intense. and it's another day with an excessive
6:02 am
heat warning for these areas in pink where we are going to see the hottest temperatures. but what's new this morning is that the excessive heat warning has been extended at least into tomorrow evening. so we're seeing day after day of this relentless heat, our mornings are still coming down to the upper 50s and low 60s in many spots like walnut creek starts out the morning at 63 degrees at 67, in san jose. but then when we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, very close to records in some spots, like santa rosa may be just two degrees shy of a record in san francisco, the record is 100. so thankfully we're not expecting it to be close to that. but we may tie the record in san jose as we hit 96 degrees. and mike, now you have a crash at the bay bridge toll plaza right behind me. carey right in the middle of all the lanes right here. lanes eight and nine is the report, but it looks like it may have expanded as crews arrive. i don't know about injuries. all i know is i saw these flashing lights and an incident. get into the report for the chp. there is slowing coming off of the maze
6:03 am
and coming underneath the 880 overcrossing folks will shuffle over outside of the middle lanes, which are the first to show any build. they're slowing right here as well as you get toward the bottom of the screen, meaning that the backup is forming down the incline and from the metering lights as well. so we do have the build happening. as this crash continues, we'll track the progress. but do note that that will be there if you're traveling through the east bay and the maze. meanwhile, the richmond bridge moves very smoothly, but the only slowing we see is highway 37. back to you. all right. thank you. mike. later this morning, angry parents and teachers in the south bay plan to demand accountability. after the abrupt firing of the santa clara county office of education's superintendent of schools board trustees in a closed door session this week, terminated superintendent mary ann dewane without cause, one source tells nbc bay area that dugan's firing was a result of many issues, and in fact, it comes in the wake of ongoing reporting by the nbc bay area investigative unit surrounding allegations of misuse of funds and the mishandling of worker complaints and claims of retaliation. there
6:04 am
is also currently an open investigation into how the county office of education spent funding for the county's head start program. one of the parents who first raised questions about that applauds this action. i believe in doing what's right and getting justice for any wrongdoing. i'm just satisfied and i just want i just want parents to know that it is very important for them to advocate. dewane did not respond to our requests for comment, but organizers of today's rally claim that the controversial firing was made without public input, so they're now calling for a public hearing. the rally this morning is scheduled for 10:00. one man is under arrest, accused of firing at police officers. this happened at about 8:00 last night at ninth and mission streets in san francisco. police say plainclothes officers were chasing an armed suspect, but no one was struck by that gunfire. in a statement, chief bill scott
6:05 am
says soon after, officers managed to capture that man with the help of responding deputies. we are one month away from election day. vice president kamala harris travels to battleground michigan today after making a pitch to republicans and independent voters, alongside republican liz cheney in wisconsin. former president trump heads back to georgia to tour damage caused by hurricane helene. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington this morning. here we go, alice, the final sprint is on and you're going to see the pace really pick up laura from both of the presidential nominees in this last stretch. as you noted, former president trump is refocusing today on the hurricane helene storm zone. while vice president harris is looking for support by reaching across the aisle. former president trump heads to georgia today to again survey devastation from hurricane helene. as vice president. harris travels to michigan after rallying in wisconsin alongside

former republican congresswoman liz cheney. i have never voted for a democrat, but this year i am proudly casting my vote for vice president kamala harris. cheney voted to impeach former president trump over his role in the january 6th capitol attack. vice president harris appealing to other republicans to back her, arguing the former president cannot be trusted. he who violated the oath to uphold the constitution of the united states of america and make no mistake, he who, if given the chance, would violate it again. that after a new special counsel court filing asserts former president trump should not be immune from prosecution for his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. the former president calls the filing political. this was a weaponization of government. rallying in michigan last night, he doubled down on false claims

of a stolen election. it was a rigged election. you have to tell kamala harris. that's why i'm doing it again. if i thought i lost, i wouldn't be doing this again. voters divided. i think trump has destroyed the republican party. do you think that liz cheney speaks for the republican party? no. absolutely not. americans weighing the impact of the last election as they prepare to vote in the nex. and we're learning that former president obama is getting ready to hit the campaign trail for vice president harris in pittsburgh next week. that will be the first time that he'll appear in a battleground state as a harris surrogate. it's not expected to be the last. former president trump tomorrow is set to return to butler, pennsylvania, to rally at the same site where a gunman tried to assassinate him in july. laura, back to you. oh, that will be interesting to alice. so much going on as we head into the final month here. thanks so much. well, back here in the bay

area, the congressional debate is back. assemblyman evan low and former san jose mayor sam liccardo are running to replace longtime peninsula congresswoman anna eshoo. on wednesday, we were supposed to air the debate, but it was canceled. liccardo's campaign had reached out, saying he had to delay due to laryngitis. well, we have a new date. the debate has been rescheduled for next friday, october 11th. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area at 7 p.m. it will be moderated by our own raj mathai. the bay area heat wave is serving up more than just hot temperatures. alum rock park in san jose closed yesterday. factors like temperatures hitting more than 95 degrees and low relative humidity and winds stronger than ten miles per hour forced the city to shut down the park, much to the disappointment of visitors. i live in fresno, so i drove. i heard about this place and it looks kind of interesting. i brought my bike
6:09 am
and everything and drove two hours. 2.5 hours to get here and then right now i'm finding out that it's closed. the weather also forcing parents and football players at willow glen high school to shift their schedules. the school now moving tomorrow's games to the morning hours to not compete in the high heat. kickoff for the jv. game nine. 930 in the morning. whoa! okay. a little different. different vibe. yeah. yeah, definitely. so, no friday night light saturday morning. and you have to consider the air quality, too. that's another factor. and being outside, being active with all of this heat, you just want to just make sure that we're all being safe in these extreme temperatures. and san jose is starting out this morning with low 70s, but we're headed back to the 90s again this afternoon and will spend several hours in the 90s during the middle of the day. as we've been dealing with a lot of record heat here and the major to extreme heat risk continues in these areas in red and purple, those contours there

show where this may have a bigger impact on your health. with prolonged exposure tomorro. unfortunately, instead of cooling down, it's going to get hotter and we'll see a lot more of those highs over 100 degrees for the north bay, napa, 100 degrees into the east bay, where concord will reach 103, and in the south county, where gilroy will hit a high of 104 degrees. so making weekend plans, mike might need to fill up so that we can drive a little bit farther. well, good news if you do drive a little farther and you're outside of solano county, let me tell you, vacaville, we got the report for one under $4. you visit sam's club, where we've been talking about all week. the price kept coming down. now in vacaville on helen power drive. it's 3.99. that's at sam's club near nut tree in pleasant hill. the best there is for 13 at arco on pleasant hill road and in cupertino we have the same price, but the new best for silicon valley is also 1413 at great gas on north deanza boulevard. you check before you go or before you leave, or maybe
6:11 am
later on this weekend as well. gasbuddy.com will get you the latest in your area as we look out the roadways, we are looking at this area. the bay bridge toll plaza. things are starting to build. the approaches are moving smoothly for friday. still a light volume of traffic, but at the toll plaza itself, we continue with this activity right there in the middle lanes. they put some flares out on the approach, so there will be slowing as you're coming underneath that 880 overcrossing prepare for that. outside the maze. they should move this over the next half hour. but there's damage. no major injuries, but a lot of activity has to clear that toll plaza. back to you. thank you. mike 610 right now, crisis averted this morning. ports are reopening today after thousands of workers reached a tentative contract agreement. next, just how long it will take to get everything moving once again and say goodbye to touch screens. because. buttons. they're making a comeback. the reason tech companies are racing to dial it back to the past. plus, you said it was true love.

does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor, mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a

pay-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need.
6:15 am
we're going to have another hot day in fremont. we're starting out at 62 right now, and we'll be at 70 degrees at 9:00 in the upper 80s by 1:00 today. as we head for the 90s again this afternoon, there will be more high heat ahead as you make your weekend plans. we'll talk about it coming up in a few minutes. and right now, the exception to your light friday commute is at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic on the span being mirrored by these flashing lights. the crash is occupy the three middle lanes as you approach the toll plaza itself. this is a problem for folks coming off of the maze. we'll talk you through the backup and give you a couple of angles to show you how things are shaping up on the progress, as well. all right. we're checking to see how the markets are shaping up. an early look at futures this morning. stocks trending upward ahead of the open. it follows this morning's release of the september jobs report and
6:16 am
monthly gains that exceeded expectations. 254,000 jobs were added last month versus 150,000 forecast. the unemployment rate fell to 4.1% versus predictions it would hold steady at 4.2%. as it stands, stocks are on track to snap a three week winning streak. ports from maine to texas are reopening after dock workers in the port. operators reach a deal on wages, ending the industry's longest strike in nearly half a century. but clearing the backlog of cargo will take some time at least 54 container ships lined up outside the port this week, preventing from preventing them from unloading and threatening shortages of everything from auto parts to bananas, analysts say. walmart, ikea and home depot are among those that rely heavily on these ports. well, shares in spirit airlines are plunging ahead of the opening bell amidst reports that the low cost carrier is preparing for a possible bankruptcy filing. the wall street journal reports. the
6:17 am
airline is now in talks with creditors over terms. premarket shares trading more than 30% lower, and the stock is already down 90% this year. the airline is struggling with mounting losses following a failed merger with jetblue, and last reported a year over year profit before the pandemic. the journal also reports that a bankruptcy filing does not appear to be imminent. meta ceo mark zuckerberg is jumping ahead of amazon founder jeff bezos into second place on the bloomberg billionaires index. zuckerberg's bet on the metaverse finally appears to be paying off, pushing his net worth to more than $206 billion about 1 billion more than bezos and 50 billion behind elon musk. the fourth richest is bernard arnault, the french founder and ceo of lvmh, the world's largest luxury goods company. i don't know because they don't sell it

at tj maxx and at fifth place is larry ellison, who co-founded the software company oracle. next at six, what is old is new again, believe it or not, when it comes to our devices. yes. so did you ever think that the buttons on the phone would return? they're making a comeback. yeah. so think a little blackberry here and phones without a touch screen. some consumers are now calling for devices to be revitalized, and companies found consolidating functions into a touch screen is cheaper. but you have to look at the screen to actually make it work. tech experts tell the today show. companies are trying to find balance in their new products. governor walz i do think we're going to start to see more of these manufacturers start to converge and think about where does the touch screen make sense. and where does a simple button or knob or control make sense for a user? you can see the full story on the today show and see which companies are bringing back the buttons for consumers. it's coming up at 7
6:19 am
a.m. right after today in the bay. it was interesting. i talked to a physical therapist, and they're saying that kids don't have the dexterity because, you know, we don't use keys anymore. a lot of things are. so it's changing. yeah, it's interesting because i like a button in the car because you can turn a dial without having to, like, look for your touchscreen. you know what i mean, right? yeah. well, trending this morning, pop star olivia rodrigo taking her tour to the philippines and she's getting some help from one of our own reporters to get fans excited. i haven't been to the philippines, but i grew up with a lot of filipinos. really? yes. my best friend that i grew up next door to was her. her mother was from the philippines. the philippines? yeah, yeah. so it might seem like a regular tiktok video, but the sound that she is mouthing is actually an interview that our own ginger conejero saab did with cameron diaz back in 2014. my best friend that i grew up next door to was her. her mother was from
6:20 am
the philippines, the philippines, and lumpia adobo. i ate it every single day and you kept your your figure eating adobo and lumpia and rice rice all the time. her mom made the best rice. she just says she's so excited that olivia rodrigo used her sound. and right in time for filipino american history month this october. that's funny. that is so cool. wow, i ate it every single day. now, does ginger make lumpia? lumpia? i bet it does. she gets out of that. that's the test. yeah. no kidding. that's really cool. that's really cool. yeah. all right, well, want something cool to eat today? maybe salads. yeah. lumpia. not today. no, do not turn on the fryer. it's pretty good, though. yeah it is. so we're going to start out with some cool temperatures across the bay area. and as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, let's look back at
6:21 am
yesterday where we set some new records in san jose. we hit 101 degrees in. the old record was 97, and we tied the record in salinas as well as king city. and we had a lot of numbers across the bay area that were very close. we're back down to the low 60s for now. we're at 63 degrees in san mateo and walnut creek, 59 in san francisco. we know it's going to be another hot day and near those record high temperatures, but we are seeing a slight dip in some of our high temperatures expected for today. so although we will be well above normal, we're not expecting a lot of new records to be set except for possibly san jose, where we may tie that record of 96 degrees. but there will be parts of the south bay that will be in the upper 90s morgan hill today, 99 100, in gilroy, and parts of the east bay up to 100 degrees today in antioch. danville, 98 degrees and also seeing some low 90s from hayward. there 90 degrees
6:22 am
today, 94 in fremont and in palo alto, 93 degrees. now we are seeing some slight relief near the immediate coastline. so half moon bay will be in the upper 70s 69, in the outer sunset and 83 in the mission district, north bay. highs in the mid to upper 90s once again, let's get a look at palo alto. it's going to be a hot weekend. we were talking about the stanford game and all the outdoor activities we have, and it's not until early to middle of next week when we start to see some relief and maybe a little bit more of a taste of fall going toward next friday into the weekend. so in the near term, we're still dealing with some excessive temperatures. really hot weather, and then some slight relief for the middle of next week as we see the shift in the wind direction. more coastal fog, but it's going to be hot in san francisco with highs in the upper 80s throughout the weekend. mike, you still tracking that crash at the bay bridge toll plaza? we're looking from our emeryville camera. jerry has turned it over here
6:23 am
toward the look, and we see the backup on the approach coming off of the maze. all this activity, there's the toll plaza itself, just short of it. we still have about 6 or 7 chp vehicles, a couple of tow trucks. there were fire crews on scene. they've cleared no major injuries. and because of that, i thought they might clear this by 630. we still have another eight minutes to go. by that point, they may clear things out, but there are flares laid out in these middle lanes approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. again, no major injuries reported, but that is a major visual issue in the middle of the approach that is causing more slowing off of the maze and the berkeley curve. the build continues to happen there, but it's friday, so overall, aside from that incident, everything is pretty light. back to you. thank you mike. well, coming up next on today in the bay, we're celebrating hispanic heritage and the way the 49ers are helping to lift up two bay area latino students and the special performance set to take place at this weekend's game. we'll be back in a moment
6:24 am
6:25 am
6:26 am
we are celebrating hispanic heritage. local students being nominated by the team for the nfl's latino youth heritage award. so the winner of the award gets $25,000. here's a look at levi's stadium this morning, where the niners will host the arizona cardinals on sunday. the team recently posted a video celebrating hispanic
6:27 am
heritage, and we talked with one of the nominees, mia sanchez. the niners nominated her for her work in the classroom and as a student athlete. she plays tennis and flag football at aptos high school, and she dreams of becoming the first person in her family to go to college and just want to thank my coaches, my teammates, for like, helping me out and like supporting the community and just being there. mia is one of seven children supported by a single mom, but mia also works. she pitches in on expenses for the family, so she says that winning the award would be great, but she's just honored to be nominated by her. san francisco 49ers that's really great. well, we've got a lot more ahead. at 630, including barriers going up in one san francisco neighborhood. the reason they're now being put up and why some neighbors don't agree. plus, police confirm that a san jose city council member is under criminal investigation.
6:28 am
the response from that city council member. stay with us. you're watching today in the ba. and from the 49ers to cal berkeley. it is a big weekend for football. but how are you going to manage the heat? meteorologist kari hall is tracking temperatures as we head into the weekend so you can plan ahead.ou're watching today y

council member. the illegal activity he's now being accused of, and his response to those allegations. trapped inside the oakland arena, a late night lockdown that caused a traffic nightmare and a delay at last night's hans zimmer concert, and another day of excessive heat across the bay area. when will we cool down? meteorologist kari hall timing out the heat wave as we head into the weekend. this is today in the bay. at least, i said, heading into the weekend. that's the bright spot. there you go. good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm kris sanchez. i'm filling in for marcus washington today. we want to take a live look out across the bay area. as the sun is starting to come up and you can see still no evidence of fog. the temperatures continue to go up, and this heat wave is extending into its fifth day. and it could go even longer.
6:32 am
let's get right to meteorologist kari hall right now. who? it's just been so excessive lately. and it's really been hitting all of the bay area very hard. and when we start to see it happening day after day, it really starts to take its toll. and we've seen this excessive heat warning get extended again and again. and it's happening again this morning. so we will see the excessive heat warning continue into tomorrow. as far as what to expect. we are going to have a hot weekend for the inland valleys. looking at some relief coming in for early to the middle of next week at least we do have a cool start for now. it's in the upper 40s in santa rosa, sonoma 49. those are a couple of the lower temperatures that we're seeing on this map. most of us walking out the door to low 60s and then going into today, another one with near record highs well above normal as we're looking at some 90s today. now, if you are out and about, you want to make sure you
6:33 am
have the. nbc bay area app. it's a great tool to track these temperatures. go to your local app store to find the nbc bay area app, or scan the qr code on your screen. all right, thank you. kari. san jose city council member is responding to news that he is under investigation by the san jose police for possible sex related crimes. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from outside police headquarters. and what is omar torres, the councilman, saying this morning? good morning to you, chris. san jose city council member omar torres is denying any wrongdoing and in fact says that he is the victim in this case. nbc bay area has confirmed that san jose police are investigating council member torres. they issued a search warrant yesterday in connection with a criminal investigation. a source tells us torres was detained as officers took his cell phone and that they took electronics from other locations as well. people familiar with
6:34 am
the matter say torres is alleged to have committed sexual misconduct with a minor, including soliciting inappropriate pictures of minors. he has also been investigated for incidents that occurred while he was attending the democratic convention. torres represents district three, which includes much of downtown san jose. the 42 year old was elected in 2022 and was the first openly gay latino member of city council. last night, torres office released a statement that reads in part, quote, today i was wrongfully detained and questioned by detectives regarding baseless allegations. let me be absolutely clear. these accusations are entirely false. i cooperated fully with sapd and turned over my passwords without issue, as i have nothing to hide. this detention was based on misinformation provided to law enforcement. in response to a police report i filed against an individual for extortion and stalking, and is a clear act of retaliation from this person. i want to be clear that i am the
6:35 am
victim in this matter. it's heartbreaking that my family, my partner, my team and myself have to respond to such unfounded and defamatory allegations while these attempts to discredit me are deeply troubling, they will not deter my commitment to you and our community. in an email, san jose police confirmed the investigation is underway involving a member of city council and that, quote, the investigation is active and ongoing. sfpd says they hope to provide us with an update at a later date. we did reach out to san jose mayor matt mason's office for comment and was told, quote, since it's an active investigation, you'll have to reach out to pd. reporting live here outside san jose, police headquarters. bob redell today in the bay. and we know these investigations take time, so we'll have to wait and see. thank you bob. now to a live look at oakland arena. and so far, police are not saying what led to last night's lockdown ahead of a concert there. fans arriving to see composer hans zimmer were held up for, well,
6:36 am
more than an hour after the gates and doors closed and no one was allowed to enter or leave. some were stuck in their cars outside the coliseum parking lot, leading to big backups on surrounding streets. other fans were stuck in a lockdown inside the venue. police will only say there was some kind of security incident. we spoke with one frustrated fan waiting outside. it's been about an hour and a half and so they just keep updating us every ten minutes, saying that they're handling some security incident and they'll let us in as soon as it's ready. some fans gave up and left before the show even started. zimmer is scheduled to play a second show at the arena next wednesday. hope that one is different. well, san francisco's mission district is putting up traffic barriers on capp street. they already have done that, and that was to stop work. but then the sex work appeared two streets over. now that street is going to get some barriers as well. the sfmta voted this week to give shotwell street similar treatment as capp street. got it
6:37 am
says new temporary mid-block barriers are going in for 18 months between 19th and 21st streets, with temporary intersection diverters. these new barriers will be installed as early as next week. and happening today, governor gavin newsom will hold a virtual news conference to announce new funding and accountability measures to address homeless encampments. he says his goal is to help people experiencing homelessness across the state. that news conference starts at 11 this morning. also this weekend, by the time cal's football team hosts miami tomorrow night, it will be a long day for some fans. that's because uc berkeley is hosting espn's college game day. that is cool. yeah, right. work crews have been preparing the stage for game day airs before the crack of dawn, starting at 6 a.m. the game will probably end near 11 p.m. that's what i mean by a long day. now to a live look at this morning at levi's
6:38 am
stadium. and if you're going to see the niners face the arizona cardinals. a warning it's going to be hot. kickoff is scheduled for a little after one in the afternoon. temperature expected to be in the low 90s. it may very well be one of the hottest niners games ever at that venue. and we know that the venue tends to be a little hot. yeah, you got the sun beating down on you. there's no shade. and you know it can get really hot. and the kids, you know at in berkeley, they know that you do have to dress for all kinds of weather from the morning to the evening. so here's a look at the early morning forecast starting out tomorrow morning. and it's always cool because sometimes, like celebrities show up and it's really cool for the college students as well. it's going to be in the upper 60s in the morning. but then look at the trend going into the upper 80s at 8:00, at 1:00 in the afternoon, it's going to be in the low 90s, but then by the time the game starts, we're dropping back to 80. and then seeing those temperatures cooling down once again going into the mid 70s. now looking at
6:39 am
the stanford game, it is going to be really hot there as well. we'll be in the low 90s during the middle of the afternoon. a light wind and lots of sunshine. you want to make sure you're also staying hydrated. for the san jose state game that starts in the upper 90s tomorrow afternoon, and then only in the low 80s by the end of the game. and then lots of football. of course, we're talking 49ers and the hottest temperatures we've seen at this venue, and it's possible that we could see some upper seconds when you think about how that feels. well, arizona will be right at home, but we will have to make some adjustments. and then in san francisco we have hardly strictly bluegrass all weekend long, 90 degrees in the city. we don't often see that, especially at golden gate park, but it's going to be a really hot weekend, and you want to make sure you're prepared if you're going to be outside for long periods of time. this weekend. we will have cooler temperatures for the sausalito boat show. that starts out as we go into the weekend at 10:00 in the morning. mike, you're seeing
6:40 am
changes now for that crash at the bay bridge in the last couple of minutes. all the activity in those middle lanes has cleared and these flares are actually starting to burn out. we should see a reinstatement of traffic for all lanes. but there's something hanging folks up between the maze and the toll plaza itself. there may be a traffic break to let traffic ease back on. so there's not this weird rush. here we go. more volume coming in. that should be a relief for folks coming out of the maze. heading to the bay bridge toll plaza. there was never a really big backup as the traffic remained able to flow through the area again. the earlier crash cleared at the bay bridge. there's a bigger volume at the richmond area and a look ahead. remember, the central freeway will be shut off from north 101. so they're advising caltrans is saying that all weekend you should use 280 to 19 that a lot a lot of traffic through that major surface street. back to you. thank you mike. 6.39 right now controversy for san jose state university. multiple schools are forfeiting rather than play their scheduled games against the women's volleyball team. coming up next. the recent claim
6:41 am
made from inside the team, now generating so much heat. and the reason advocates are blasting i. plus, we're live at the sonoma raceway. this teases for laura garcia and the trans am that your brother used to have. this is parnelli jones trans am. we've got a whole lot more car history up ahead for you guys. you want to keep it here, but we have a lot more to show you. i'm going to sit back and relax for now. and they are off. we will check in with the bay area football team on their way overseas. stick with us. you're watching today in the bay

it lost a close one to colorado state, but this follows some rough days for the team, including utah state becoming the latest school to forfeit an upcoming game against the spartans that was scheduled for tomorrow. this is all in protest over allegations of a transgender athlete on the spartans roster. four schools have now forfeited games against the spartans utah state, southern utah, wyoming and boise state. in each case, the schools did not reveal the exact reason for those cancellations, but we believe it stems from one san jose state player's claim made as a part of a federal lawsuit filed by the ncaa athletes over

its transgender policies. these policies allow athletes to compete on women's teams under certain conditions in the claim last week, the player stated that she has a transgender teammate and that the player in question is unsafe for both teams. the opposing team and the spartans, in part because of josh harder spikes. lgbtq advocates are blasting that lawsuit, arguing it only spreads more hate because when people hate a class of people, then they will individually harm those people who are part of that class. that's where the real danger is. a san jose state released a statement reading in part, we are committed to supporting our student athletes through these challenges and in their ability to compete in an inclusive, fair, safe and respectful environment. october is breast cancer awareness month, a research fundraising effort which also doubles as a

6:53 am
degrees really hot and a lot of spots, including san francisco, where it's been so different from neighborhood to neighborhood. with the spread in some of those temperatures the past few days, about 30 degrees, and we're up to 83 today in the mission district, napa today 97. so we are still dealing with some heat today. unfortunately, it gets worse tomorrow. we're going to see a lot more highs over 100 degrees for napa, 100 there, 101 in dublin and 104 in gilroy. tomorrow afternoon on sunday we're seeing some of those temperatures coming down, but still really hot. san francisco in the upper 80s, while oakland on sunday will hit a high of 91 degrees every day. we've seen this heat get extended longer and longer that high pressure just does not want to budge. and so we're still looking at some really hot temperatures throughout the weekend into early next week. we're in the mid 80s in the inland areas. and san francisco still well above normal for this
