down on illegal gold mining. i traveled to find out about the practice in africa's gold coast. we begin this hour with positive breaking news about the american economy. wages are outpacing inflation and job growth shattered expectations in september tampering signs of a cooling labor market. let's look at the new data from the bureau of labor statistics. payrolls jumped by 254,000 last month. that's nearly 100,000 more than in august. the highest growth since march. the strong job creation is leading to higher wages. average hourly earnings were up 4% in september compared to the same time last year. president biden touting the new report earlier. >> we were told inflation couldn't come down without massive job losses or sending the economy into economic recession. once again, outside experts were wrong. inflation has come down. wages have gone up faster than

prices. interest rates are down. we have more work to do, though, to keep -- to keep getting prices down. >> leading us off this hour, nbc news business and data correspondent, brian cheung. experts were not expecting job growth to be this big in september. what happened here and which industries are hiring the most? >> the numbers that came in were well above what wall street economists were expecting. if we rehash that 254,000 figure, that's how many jobs were added in september. that was well above what economists had expected. they thought something like 150,000 jobs would have been added in the month. what's impressive about that gain is the broad-based nature of it. when you talk about leisure and hospitality, bars and restaurants adding almost 70,000 jobs. construction jobs over 25,000.

this is a picture that others thought we would be in recession at this point of time after that high inflation that peaked in the summer of 2022. one economist told us this jobs report shows we are comfortably clear of a recession. bank of america, if you were to give this a score on a report card, this would be scored a plus. >> if we look at the calendar. the report comes as the presidential election is a month away and the economy is a key issue for voters nationwide. big picture, brian, what is the story of the u.s. economy right now? >> we have to rewind to the summer of 2022 when inflation was peaking to the tune of about 9%. that's how much prices were rising on a yearly basis. most recent read of the rate of inflation in this country, 2.5%. economists say where we want to be is closer to 2%, that's why we're not yet calling it mission accomplished. president biden even said that. we have more work to do in his

remarks earlier in the hour. but what we're really seeing here is a picture of an economy that should have been in a recession by now, but a lot of wall street economists say this is a strong jobs report. it looks like we avoided one for now. >> what impact could today's report have on interest rates? >> the expectation is that the federal reserve after cutting interest rates by a half percentage point last month, they'll cut interest rates again in the next meeting as they're encouraged by this data. that likely to it be a quarter percent. >> brian cheung, thank you very much. president biden is holding steadfast in his support for israel this afternoon as the country weighs how it will respond to iran for tuesday's ballistic missile attack. for the first time as president, president biden took questions from the white house briefing room and said he would advise against striking iranian oil fields, an idea that's been widely discussed. erin mclaughlin joins us from tel aviv. what more did we hear from the

president this afternoon on israel? >> hey, zinhle. this is a region collectively holding its breath, waiting for israel's response to that iranian missile attack. 180 plus ballistic missiles were fired from iran towards israel. the united states urging a proportional response. in that white house briefing, president biden says he does not expect the response to be immediate. white house officials have been in constant contact with israeli authorities, some 12 hours a day, and that the u.s. will wait and see what israel is going to do. take a listen. >> look, the israelis have every right to respond to the vicious attacks on them, not just from the iranians but from hezbollah to the houthis.

anyway, but the fact is that they have to be very much more careful about dealing with civilian casualties. >> how should they respond? you expressed concerns about attacks on iranian oil facilities. how should they respond? >> that's between me and them. >> you heard there the president talk about civilian casualties. now, in terms of the bombardment that's been happening for days now in lebanon, we have gotten some fresh figures from lebanese authorities in the last 24 hours that have been 153 israeli air strikes on various targets throughout lebanon. lebanese authorities updating the death toll in lebanon since the intense bombardment, more than 2,000 civilians killed. nbc confirmed two israeli soldiers were killed overnight in a drone attack in israel. what more should we know? >> yeah. on the record, israeli military

has been tight-lipped in terms of the details of that attack. what we do know in terms of those details is from the israeli media. israeli media reporting there were two drone fired by iran-backed militia in iraq towards the golan heights killing two 19-year-old soldiers and wounding dozens more. it's seen as a significant attack. the first of its kind really in terms of casualties since the conflict began. >> erin mclaughlin, great reporting. thank you very much. there are major developments in the ongoing saga of the menendez brothers. the los angeles district attorney says he is reviewing new evidence in their case. erik and lyle menendez were sensed to life in prison for shooting and killing their parents in 1989. the case has become a fascination for true crime fanatics to this day. the case regained new attention because of a new netflix series and calls for their release by

kim kardashian. chloe, do we have any sense of what this new evidence might be? >> we know of two things. one is a letter that erik menendez allegedly wrote a cousin of his in 1988, a year before the murder of his parents. in this letter he says he was being abused by his father sexually. he talks about become in bed at night, lying awake and not being able to fall asleep because he was terrified his father would come into the room. the other thing is a sworn affidavit by an individual in the boy band menudo. in the '80s, he said he was sexually assaulted by jose menendez. these are among the two things that we know that they are looking into right now. >> people know about this case and they know about the name kim kardashian. she championed a couple of

criminal cases lately, this is one of them. in a letter to nbc news she said i spent time with lyle and erik. they are not monsters. how did she get involved? >> she visited the white house under president biden. she visited the white house under president trump and this was all in an effort to commute sentences and to bring awareness. she's also involved with an organization called reform alliance. she did go visit the san diego correctional facility where erik and lyle menendez are behind bars. there were many other inmates there, zinhle, who she met with as well. she writes this personal essay for nbcnews.com advocating and lobbying for their release from prison saying that i am not excusing the crimes and the murders of killing their parents, but let's talk about the years of sexual abuse that they endured and that i do not

helene now the deadliest hurricane to make landfall in the united states since katrina back in 2005. at least 223 people have been killed from the storm. that number is only expected to grow as millions of people across the south are still reeling from the impact of the storm one week after helene made landfall as a category 4 hurricane. marissa parra joins us from irwin, tennessee. we know many communities have no power, limited food and no running water. explain what's happening on the ground in irwin in terms of recovery. what are you seeing? >> well, i'm seeing that

firsthand. we've been to several of these communities that are lacking those basic necessities you just described. what i'm seeing is so many helpers, and i'll get to that in a moment. also people in different stages of this process. we're one week out and there are some people that are going through the process of rebuilding, trying to stock up on those supplies they've been missing. some people are still stranded in those communities. we've seen helicopters overhead delivering aid, however they can, whatever is needed. but every person here, regardless of what stage they're in, is in the process of grief. there's different reasons for that. whether they were personally touched by this or not, just watching this is devastating. one woman we spoke to lost her husband. she lost her dog. she was on this floating home. she was on her front porch in her floating home. and we wanted to do a deeper dive on her story. i want to take you to a quick clip of our longer interview with her.

here's what we heard. >> one minute i'm baking cookies. the next minute i'm fighting for my life. my whole life has been turned upside down. jerry tried to get back to me. he jumped in the water. someone said can he swim? i said, yes, about as good as he can dance. one foot over here. one foot over there. i don't know that i've ever seen him swim. he went in, he never came back up. >> zinhle, her husband, jerry hunter's story is one of over 200 of those who lost their lives in this. we're still waiting to find out how much more that will grow. vicki is among countless survivors that we're just starting to learn about. through this devastation, i will point out how many people are helping. we've seen so many local church drives, organizations donating. people driving for five hours, donating their time. helicopters, horses, mules, bringing help to the people who december separately need it >> so much lost but it's encouraging to see those stories of support.

we've also been following the investigation into the workers at a plastics factory who died or went missing in the floodwaters. that remains unclear. what's the latest there? >> i can tell you, it is complex. if i were to be able to cross this bridge, which is broken behind me, that would get you to impact plastics. right now, it's a game of he said she said. the ceo of the company put out a video statement as well as a written statement yesterday negating the allegations that employees, surviving employees are making that impastics plastics forced them to stay longer than was safe to do so. we know six employees were swept away. three of them were found dead. three of them still remain missing. those families desperate for answers. there is an investigation from both tosha as well as the tennessee bureau of investigation. we're working on our side to get answers to all of those seeking them. >> we know you'll bring it when you have it. thank you very much. now to tesla recalling

thousands of cybertrucks because of an issue with its rearview camera. it's the fifth safety recall this year alone and the latest problem facing a tesla truck some say was built more to make a statement than it is to hit the road. tom costello has more. >> reporter: forget the lamborghini or ferrari. >> it drives great. it drives awesome. that is why i love it. >> reporter: this is the most eye-catching vehicle that you will see on the roads today. love it or hate it, the tesla cybertruck, described as ceo elon musk as what bladerunner would have driven, is the best thing on four wheels. from kim kardashian and pharrell to lady gaga all getting behind the wheel. what's the appeal? >> it is the cybertruck and has a definite cool factor. >> reporter: the cybertruck was introduced as a futuristic car

in 2019, and hit the road last year, but a string of safety issues led to five recalls in just one year, and the latest, a rearview camera that took at least eight seconds to boot up before it shifted into first. and in context, the government says it has to happen within two seconds. the recall notice says it could lead to a collision. the other recalling, failing windshield wipers, hard to read warning lights, parts literally falling off and then issues with the car's accelerator. >> this slid up. >> reporter: a viral video shows the pedal can be stuck to the floor once it is pushed all of the way down. tesla markets the cybertruck as a total workhorse, competing against the likes of other major brand pickups. tesla even boasts a towing capacity and the capacity of an average african elephant,

my count, including current and former board members, people who are running for the board, county employees, they rallied out here in support of her, and they criticized the board for what they say is their lack of transparency to call for accountability and her reinstatement. i reject any any claim that this is a woman that would engage in any of that behavior. i work closely with her and i knew how she handled stress and differences of opinion in a 4 to 2 vote, with one abstention. the board of trustees, in a closed door session, terminated superintendent mary ann dewan without cause. one source tells nbc bay area diwan's firing was the result of many issues, and in fact, it comes in the wake of ongoing reporting by the nbc bay area investigative unit surrounding allegations of misuse of funds and the mishandling of worker complaints and claims of retaliation. the same thing has happened. we come to her. she made the decision. nothing happens without her decisions. she's the rule. she's

the leader. dewan did not respond to our request for comment. organizers of today's rally claim the controversial firing was made without public input, and one board member this morning said she is calling for a public hearing next week. she is in support of doctor dewan. by the way, one of doctor dewan's supporters also pointed out that of the four trustees who voted for her firing, three might not be here in january because one is retiring, two are up for reelection here in the south bay. bob redell, nbc, bay area news. an investigation is underway into a city council member in san jose. people familiar with the matter claim city council member omar torres is alleged to have committed sexual misconduct with a minor that includes soliciting inappropriate pictures of minors. he's also being investigated for an incident that occurred while he attended the democratic national convention in august. one source tells us torres was detained by police yesterday. officers took his cell phone and other personal electronics at other locations. torres denies any

wrongdoing. in a statement issued last night. he says in part, quote, this detention was based on misinformation provided by law enforcement. in response to a police report i filed against an individual for extortion and stalking and is a clear act of retaliation from this person. councilmember torres says he is the victim in this case. in san francisco, a man is under arrest for allegedly firing a gun at police officers. this happened around eight last night at ninth and mission streets in san francisco. the officers were in plain clothes, chasing an armed suspect. fortunately, no one was hurt, and in a statement today, police chief bill scott thanked san francisco sheriff's deputies for assisting in this arrest. those excessive heat warnings have been extended into this weekend. some parts of the bay area will reach triple digits again. here's meteorologist kari hall with what to expect as we look at our weekend forecast. another day of this excessive

moment, as a comeback moment for the former president. a lot of attention will be on that rally tomorrow afternoon. >> all right. great reporting. shaq brewster, yamiche alcindor, thank you very much. three former memphis police officers are facing up to 20 years in prison after beating tyre nichols. nichols death made national headlines last year after bodycam and surveillance video showed the three officers brutally assaulting nichols following a traffic stop. he died in it the hospital three days late he and is survived by his 7-year-old son. priscilla thompson joins us now. first off, walk us there this verdict. >> yeah. none of these three men were found guilty of the most egregious counts which include excessive force and deliberate indifference. we saw all three of these officers found guilty of witness

tampering for the lies that were told after this beating, that they told to their supervisors and others as they worked to get their stories straight. there was one ex-officer here, demetrius haley, who the jury did find had committed conduct that led to bodily injury, but not death, just bodily injury of tyre nichols. that is a lesser charge than what the prosecution had hoped for. we saw the family coming out of court yesterday hailing this a victory saying all three men were found guilty of something and all three of them will be going to jail. they were taken into custody by the u.s. marshals just after that verdict was announced. there will be a meeting next week to determine if they will remain in jail or if they will be released until their sentencing in january. the family and spokespeople for the family saying this was just a first step. there's still the state trial where they're charged with murder, kidnapping, among other

government crackdown on illegal gold mining. gold prices are up, ghana, africa's leading gold producer, is struggling to feel that payoff. we are in one of ghana's major refineries. so we traveled to the west african country to learn more before selling to major buyers, gold is often refined, like here at royal gold refinery. >> refining basically means you taking out impurities. >> reporter: do you ask where it's coming from, especially in this environment where there's a lot of illegal mining? >> of course. >> yes, the origin of the gold is very important. >> reporter: while legal mining is subject to environmental regulations, that's not the same for illegal mining. galamsey minors dig holes near bodies of water without filling holes after extraction. and mercury used to fill the holes often leaks into the water.

our inner critic, and they say if left uncheck it could lead to negative self-talk and low self-esteem. katie horowitz joins us now. this can manifest in in ways. what can this negative self talk inner critic look like? >> a lot of people think of self-talk, which is a story we tell ourselves 24/as we walk through the world. they think of it as an inner monologue. do you have an inner monologue? you're talking to yourself all the time? >> yes. >> me, too. some people experience self talk in visuals, like a movie playing out in their mind, sensory experiences. some people have a combination of all of these. >> that's a good point. sometimes to the point of that complexity, it can show up as a critic. what harm -- what can that do to our mental health? >> well, i love that you brought up critic. that phrase, inner critic, that

itself is a bit problematic to begin with. we're labeling a part of ourself, a very real part as the enemy or bad. what it is, it's a part of our self that is fluent in a language that i call casual negativity. casual negativity is the negative talk that we use without emotion attached so we become fluent in the negative talk. over time, that fluency is lead to a sense of low self-worth, decreased motivation, unhealthy relationships and it can hold you back from living the life you want to live. >> i appreciate that and that refrain. it's not lost to me that constructive criticism is not bad. how do we differentiate that from the inner critic? >> i like to think of it all as the inner ally that might not be speaking the language that we would prefer for it to speak. it's a difference between that harmful inner dialogue and like you said, that constructive criticism. harmful inner dialogue is more

like an inner roadblock. it holds you back. it reminds you what you're not. it can lead to those things we just discussed. however, a constructive inner ally critic can help point out what you are capable of. it's like an inner mentor, so to speak. >> i love that. how do we change the narrative inside the head, if we have a loud, voice, critic, narrative, saying some hurtful or harmful things? >> yes, in my book "want yourself" i lay out a road map of how to do that. a lot of us are okay, i'm in this negative self talk loop, what can i do? through four questions you can ask yourself in the moment. self-talk is not inherently good or bad. it's information. first question, what is underneath whatever i'm self-talking about. you can ask, am i using this self-talk to maybe get something else, like connection of

validation or some sort of certainty? >> yes. >> this might be hard for some people. am i using that self-talk to distract me from the change that i actually want to make or convince me i'm doing enough. and myself what is my priority. >> i love that my therapist is always saying ask yourself why it's happening. how do we lead into positive self talk? >> i like to think less in terms of affirmations, if you're not a word space self-talk person, it's hard to replace something negative with a positive phrase. you have to start with what's believable. whether it's a movie playing out in your mind or words that you experience, giving yourself what i call positivity proof points are super important. figuring out what you already believe to be true about yourself and going from there. yourself and going from there. >> i love at.th my life is full of questions... mom, is yellow a light or a dark? how do i clean an aioli stain? thankfully, tide's the answer to almost all of them. why do we even buy napkins?

focus on the underlying problem of homelessness, not just moving people out of encampments. nothing else like it in the united states. we have governors that come from all over the country. national governors association discussing this program, and it's producing real results. and again, it's about results with responsibility to address the underlying issues. the governor also announced stricter measures alongside the funding. he says california cities and counties need to closely enforce state homeless laws, or they will not receive further funding. well, this heat wave continues into this weekend, but hang in there. there is an end in sight. here's meteorologist kari hall with our seven-day forecast. as we look at what to expect. making weekend plans. you want to make sure you have hydration and air conditioning in the plans, because in the inland valleys, it's going to be close to 100 degrees through sunday. and in the mid 90s even on monday. but then we are looking at a nice little cool down toward the middle to end of next week with low 80s for the inland valleys.
