7:02 am
areas in pink going into the upper 90s 100 seconds. so that includes places like down here in san jose. as we get our day started, i would take advantage of the better part of the morning. even already going into the 80s by 10 a.m. after that, it will just be scorching out there. we'll take a look at the rest of the bay area and when relief is on the way, coming up in a few minutes. kyra. all right. cynthia. thanks. you can track the heat and fire danger using our nbc bay area weather app. you can download it for free in the apple and google play stores. we begin right now with a suspected road rage crash in the north bay that claimed the life of a woman. it happened yesterday afternoon in rohnert park. that's south of santa rosa. the california highway patrol tells us that two cars were going southbound on stony point road. that's when one driver rammed their car into a second car. that second car then lost control, veering into oncoming traffic where it was hit by a third car. three people
7:03 am
inside were hit and a woman died. a man and a child were taken to the hospital. the person driving that third car not involved in the road rage also was taken to the hospital. the chp tells us the officers found the car that started this whole road rage crash several miles away on highway 101. they have reason to believe there may have been a third involved vehicle that fled the scene. that investigation is still ongoing as information becomes available. no word on any arrests nor the condition of the victims who were taken to the hospital. tomorrow marks one year since the first attacks in the israel-hamas war. on october 7th, 2023, hamas launched a surprise attack on israel, killing 1200 people and taking more than 240 hostages. today, 101 are still in captivity, four of them americans. people will

into focus. last week during the vice presidential debate when governor tim walz pushed senator jd vance to acknowledge that trump lost the 2020 election and vance refused. now, a judge has unsealed new evidence in the special counsel's case against the former president. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, christian. great to see you this morning. if i could just put you on the spot here. can you break all of that down for us and look at what sort of impact it could have this last month of the campaign. well, kyra, it's a great question. i think that this is an issue that
7:14 am
trump's allies do not want him to be focused on. they don't think it helps him with the voters that he needs. sure, it might energize the trump base, but in order to win the election, if you look at the battleground states, if you look at how close a state like pennsylvania is for example, or michigan, where he is literally fighting for his political life, they don't think it helps him with undecided voters in those states or with the independent and moderate voters. they want him to stay focused on issues like the economy. but former president trump has spent a lot of time, quite frankly, this week talking about 2020, in the wake of that exchange that you just talked about at the vice presidential debate. so i think that is the impact and the question and it's an open question. could it hurt him in these key battleground states? we don't know the answer to that yet. but we do know, strategically speaking, the folks who have spoken around him say he shouldn't be focused on that. he should get back to the issues that voters care about. yeah, they'd like to move forward from that four years ago. well, kristen, we thank you
7:15 am
for that insight this morning. we look forward to seeing you in about 45 minutes from now. and we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press. she will have exclusive interviews with arkansas senator tom cotton and california representative adam schiff. if you just stick right here with us for today in the bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m, right after this newscast. and coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we will talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the potential impact of gen z in the 2024 presidential election. back to that hot heat. now the high temperatures are keeping firefighters busy. evacuation orders are still in place in lake county as crews keep an eye on that glen haven fire we told you about yesterday morning. it started friday afternoon on a hillside on the north side of clear lake. it has burned more than 400 acres, destroyed two

lead and serve in the community. dewan's firing has been divisive. about 100 of her supporters gathered friday calling for her reinstatement. the rally was disrupted by protesters who supported that decision. now to october, it is breast cancer awareness month. this year alone, more than 32,000 women in california alone will be diagnosed with the disease. today, a big event in san francisco to raise awareness and funds in the fight for a world without breast cancer. it's the susan g. komen more than pink walk at the san francisco zoo. experts say one third of breast cancer deaths in the united states are preventable with access to modern treatments. the funds raised today will go to support current patients and to finding a cure. the overall atmosphere of the day is celebration, celebrating those survivors and our push for more survivors. and

course. well, it is a mild start already to our sunday. look at that sunrise coming up over san jose, 69 degrees. we are noticing also a few of those tropical moisture clouds coming up from the south, so you might notice it at times as you step out the door. we are right now in south san francisco, 68 degrees mid 60s out there towards pleasanton and just slightly cooler up there in santa rosa, low 60s, but it will warm up very quickly. so take advantage of not only the cooler temperatures this morning, but also getting those errands done as we will be under another spare the air alert day as we wrap up our weekend here by noon. we are warming up very quickly. a 70s and 80s by the beaches to even some 90s already starting to pop up in our bay. and that is the story. as we continue our lunch plans into our inland valleys and we'll get hot once again. areas to watch, of course, will be the triple digits where there's a lot of them. for today we are amplifying that heat once again. that excessive heat warning will expire at 1100s up in wine

country, out towards concord. 102. we continue with those hundreds out towards livermore, the tri-valley, down into the south county. gilroy, you're going to be hot once again, an area to watch, of course, right there centered around san jose, santa clara. we are going to be looking at those temperatures just hovering right there under that century mark, and continuing to build that heat into the city where downtown can get into the possible 90s later on this afternoon. so here we go for the 49ers game. if you're going, you could be making history today as you even approach the stadium mid 90s there. you're going to be sweating already. please hydrate before the game. drink all of those electrolytes, just lather yourself up in sunscreen. you're going to need it. as we go on into the afternoon, we'll watch third, fourth, quarter 100 degrees. now the peak hour temperatures normally max out around three 4:00. so come back at five and rob mayeda will be here to tell you if we did indeed hit that century mark
7:22 am
into the afternoon, it will still be toasty as you make your exit plans there in santa clara and staying in the south bay. now behind that we are counting down to a cooldown. i know it can't come fast enough, but we're getting more activity here in our long range outlook. by the middle of the week, a few systems to our west are going to bring in more of our natural ac, more cloud cover, and even a hint and possibility of some rain up there towards the corner of the state. so we'll watch that and watch those temperatures dip. i know for tomorrow we're not going to get rid of that heat just yet. turning it off very quickly. but by tuesday we could be looking at more of a drop back down into the 80s and low 90s for our inland valleys. so i think that's better than the triple digits for today. we'll cool it down into the 90s for tomorrow, but then pretty much cruise into the week with some seconds and more cloud cover. san francisco very warm for today, but i think it should be spectacular as we welcome fleet week that starts in the city. oh, and it's always

nominated by the team for the nfl's latino youth heritage award, and today they will be honored at the game. we recently spoke with nominee mia sanchez, the niners nominated her for her work in the classroom and as a student athlete, playing tennis and flag football at aptos high school. sanchez told us she dreams of being a first generation college student and just want to thank my coaches, my teammates, for like helping me out and like supporting the community and just being there. mia is one of seven children supported and raised by a single mom. not only does she go to school and play sports, but mia also works. she earns money to help her mom with household expenses. mia tells us winning the award would be great, but she's just honored to be nominated by her favorite 49ers. the winner of the award receives $25,000, and we wish mia all the

best. now, to some political observers are parsing the potential 2024 presidential turnout by gender, income or political party. but gen z voters loom large for the november 5th event. this group between the ages of 18 and 29, contains 41 million potential voters likely to be 20% of the electorate. so what do we know about them with respect to the presidential election? nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. hi, larry, as always, great to see you. how does gen z stack up against everyone else? we are both so far from gen z. well, i am, that's for sure. you not so sure you know, you know, we tend to write this group off. you know, they're young, they don't know what they're doing. they're not focused. all that kind of stuff. guess what? they're a lot more in the game than we think. what we have here is a harvard study.

the university, the institute of politics. there took this study just three weeks ago. and what did they find? they found that, in fact, gen z folks are very active. two thirds of them intend to vote. and that's really comparable to the overall national average that we had in 2000. but, you know, while the voters nationally are locked in a statistical tie, you've seen this 51, 49, all that kind of stuff. these guys are way over to one side. and that's what's very interesting. we've got to we've got a table that we put up there that gives you an idea of just how one sided this whole thing is. as far as these folks are concerned. you know, you look for harris, 61%. you see, for trump, 30%. these are folks between 29 and 40. and guess what? this is very comparable to what we saw in 2000 when it was 62 to 29. so you put this together, and at least for right now, just a month out, it looks like gen z voters are in the game and very one sided for kamala harris. you're saying it's similar to 2020. exactly. okay, so what what else have you found in this poll? are there

more similarities to the previous biden-trump race? more interesting data? kira you know, we talk about the gender gap. we've seen this kamala harris ahead by about 15% with women, donald trump ahead by about 2,012% or so with men. look at the gender gap here okay harris gets the male vote 3 to 2. that's about it okay. female. she gets the female vote by a 3 to 1 margin. you can see that 70% right there against 23. so women are really in her camp probably for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is harris's opinion about reproductive freedom. it's really a one sided kind of thing. and so obviously we won't know until it's all over. but what do you think this really says about election day or the election itself? you know, a lot of these guys all have their same group supporting them. men, women, just for example. and let's not just look at harris,

by the way, someone like donald trump has got the evangelical vote on a very lopsided way. all of these different groups together in a close election can really make the difference. if they're up 10%, down percent, 5%, because in those seven states that we talk about, all the time, it can be this close. so we want to watch these kinds of groups, especially those that we don't, are not used to seeing really perform watch to see what happens. and they could have a big impact when it comes to this election. just 30 days from now. but who's counting? all right, larry, thanks so much. 752. up next, a quick look at the top stories we're following, including relief in sight. cooler weather. cynthia promises she'll be

does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor, mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need.
