5:01 am
remember those lost during hamas's violent october seventh attack. the resulting war reshaping the middle east over the past year, with more than 40,000 palestinians killed in gaza. we're live from washington, with more on the solemn anniversary. rallying against a recall, oakland mayor sheng thao putting up a fight against the effort to recall her. this as a high profile community organization, plans to speak out against her today. and no break from the heat. the hot weather expected to stick around today. meteorologist vianey arana tracking when a cooldown is finally expected to arrive. this is today in the bay. and here we go. monday morning, 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm laura garcia. we're going to have a look at that morning commute in just a moment with mike. but first, as i mentioned, meteorologist vianey arana is with us. we were just talking about the heat. it has been rough, right, mike? i don't know
5:02 am
how many times it kicked on, and i didn't really have it set that low. so if you're wondering why it was kicking on so much at night, here's the reason why. we're still in the 60s and it's 5:00 in the morning. it's 68 degrees right now in san jose. take a look at that humidity. it's about 59%. so conditions are still very dry. and we've got some 70s right now. notice spots like san martin. it's 80 degrees right now. saratoga 74. orinda is 74 right now san mateo is 70 degrees. so that is the reason likely why your ac kept kicking on even into the morning hours. we're not really getting anything in the way of relief. if you look at the 24 hour temperature change, it's pretty much the same from what we've been waking up to the past couple of mornings, which is the reason why the heat advisory was extended through tonight. now there are no heat warnings in effect any longer, but all of the areas highlighted in this orange glow, including parts of the city, can expect to continue to see that heat today. this heat advisory will remain in place through 11 p.m. tonight.
5:03 am
unfortunately for us, those valleys and inland areas will once again hit triple digits. in some spots. san francisco is expected to climb into the 80s, so we're still monitoring that elevated fire danger. i'll have a closer look at your extended forecast in just a few minutes. first, let's check in with mike. yeah. vianey. we still have some weekend work that remains now. 680. that work in san ramon cleared actually, 12 hours ahead of schedule. so yesterday evening that was great news. but overnight we did have some closures northbound. so 680 still restricted north of highway 84. that should be picked up over the next hour. let's say sometimes lasting closer to seven. but we'll watch that. i'll get the exact clear time on the chart there. we know this has been scheduled to be cleared up and there were no delays reported yesterday afternoon. northbound 101 connector onto the central freeway should be reopening right this second. i'm waiting to get full confirmation or at least some speed sensor reads there, but it didn't look from one of the cameras in the area. like there any more restrictions? we'll track that in the city as well. back to you. thank you very much, mike.
5:04 am
503 right now, today marks one year since the october 7th hamas terror attack. the fighting in the middle east is not letting up as the world recognizes the solemn milestone. this is new video just in this morning showing israel launching major airstrikes last night on beirut's southern suburbs. it is the most intense bombardment of the city since the opening of a broader war with hezbollah last month, the israeli military says fighter jets struck targets belonging to hezbollah's intelligence headquarters and weapons storage facilities since the october seventh attacks. gaza health officials say more than 40,000 palestinians have been killed in the israel-hamas war. millions have also been displaced from their homes. tensions in the region are only heightened since that attack. today in the bay brie jackson joins us live from washington and one year later, actually, it's alice barr joining us. i apologize for that. alice and more than 90 hostages now remain in captivity, including four

americans. laura. mourners today are reflecting on the thousands of lives lost over the past year and taking stock of this current moment when long held efforts by the u.s. and allies to avoid a wider war risk slipping away. across israel today, ceremonies mark one year of anguish of hostages separated from their families. we miss him. so much of palestinians living through unbearable conditions, more than 40,000 dead, according to the gaza health ministry. and 365 days after hamas militants attacked inside israel, killing 1200 and kidnaping more than 200. the suffering is only growing. israel, now battling hezbollah militants in lebanon and vowing retaliation against iranian missile strikes. prime minister benjamin netanyahu not backing down. israel marko vavic israel has both the duty and the

right to defend itself. that's despite growing criticism, including from the u.s, about the devastating toll on civilians and the fear of an all out regional war. vice president kamala harris on cbs 60 minutes backing israel's right to defend itself while stressing the need for a ceasefire, the need for humanitarian aid, the need for this war to end, the need for a deal to be done, which would release the hostages. but those negotiations are deadlocked, raising questions about the us's ability to influence israeli policy. president biden, sharpening his rhetoric toward prime minister netanyahu no administration has helped israel more than i have. none. none. none. and i think bibi should remember that. hostage families pleading for a breakthrough. i will not allow myself to lose my hope. because if i do, who will scream for keith? the cries of

millions growing more desperate with no end in sight. in a statement this morning, president biden urging americans to bear witness to the unspeakable brutality of the october 7th attacks, but also to the beauty of the lives that were stolen that day. and with the war looming over the presidential race, both nominees will commemorate today's anniversary. vice president harris here in washington, former president trump in florida. laura. alice, thank you very much. a lot to cover there. 506 right now, in just a few hours, the oakland naacp will enter the fray in the effort to recall oakland mayor sheng thao. and it's not on the side of the mayor today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from the newsroom with more on what this could mean for the effort. kris. well, laura, this could be a big blow for oakland mayor sheng thao, who has one month left to convince voters that she should
5:08 am
keep her job. mayor thao's supporters rallied in her name near the rockridge bart station yesterday. a group called oaklanders oaklanders defending democracy. the mayor was also there and talked about what she's done while in office. even with the distraction of the recall. under my leadership, as mayor of oakland, we've made tremendous progress. community crime is down by 35%, and our downtown is coming back to life with more and more foot traffic every single day. but we also do know at some point decided after mayor sheng thao fired oakland police chief leronne armstrong without cause 20 months ago and then did not hire a new chief until five months ago. the recall effort intensified after an fbi search of her home this summer, though she has not been charged with any crime. today, the oakland naacp will tell the public what they told us last night that it's time for tao to go because she can no longer govern the city because of our
5:09 am
members and other members of the community are coming to us with their concern about how the city has been run. and they want to us to make a statement to see if we are going to support it. and as of this time, the president and the board has come to a conclusion that we will support the recall of the mayor. mr. white will be joined by other naacp leaders and oakland united, which is that other pro-recall group that's happening at 10:00 this morning in west oakland. by the way, oakland voters have not recalled a mayor from office in more than 100 years. laura coco gauff very much kris. 509 right now. authorities have not yet identified a woman who died in what they're calling a string of road rage incidents in the north bay. the chaos played out saturday afternoon. the chp says
5:10 am
a mazda driver intentionally rammed a car, pushing it into oncoming traffic in rohnert park, leading to a head on crash, which killed a woman passenger in that car. investigators say the same suspect soon rammed another car, and when officers arrived, he tried to run from the scene. he's also accused of triggering three other crashes that same day. he is facing murder and dui charges. with a new hurricane potentially taking aim at florida, leaders in the carolinas are trying to make the focus less on politics and more about the recovery from hurricane helene. some argue the campaigns on each side are trying to turn it into an election year issue. right now, there are 235 confirmed deaths from helene. tens of thousands in the hardest hit areas are still lacking power, power and clean running water. we talked with one man calling the biggest challenge right now for his family. not having that clean water. they live in hard hit

asheville, where more than 70,000 people are still without power. he says the town faces a long road back to normal. to see so much of it washed away. nearly everything we love about the city is damaged beyond repair. is terribly sad. we likely won't have water in this city for a month. no water means schools can't open. no water means daycares can't open, no schools and no daycares means no parents can work. adding insult to injury, he says because asheville relies so heavily on tourism, some city workers are already getting laid off. people on the florida coast now preparing for the next big storm. it's called milton, and it's forecast to hit the gulf side wednesday night. it is now projected to reach hurricane strength with potentially life threatening storm surge, damaging damaging winds, torrential rains. meteorologist vianey arana joins us now.
5:12 am
you're tracking its path as well. my brother lives in florida and he's like, you know, here we go. we got to get ready once again. oh, gosh. he does. well, i hope he's okay. and, you know tuning in because we saw the rapid intensification of this. now it's a category three. so as it makes its kind of track towards florida heading into friday we're talking about dangerous storm surge. and the thing with these category three hurricanes is in addition to the storm surge being a threat, the winds as well, you can see there the formation, the rotation right here, you can see it. i'm going to point it out to you right there and notice these outer bands. we've got some rain already beginning to develop. that's where we initially see that tropical storm outlook. but of course now it is officially a category three. wind speeds right now at about 125mph, moving east at about eight miles per hour. with that pressure at about 945 millibars. now, let's take a look at the storm track heading into the next couple of hours and the next couple of days, we're going to continue to
5:13 am
see how this plays out. but if you notice, by the time that we inch closer into that wednesday thursday outlook, it does look like a potential landfall by wednesday night into early thursday morning. and that storm surge could be anywhere from 8 to 12ft. so we're keeping a close eye on this. i'll be back with your local forecast in just a few minutes. laura, thank you very much. it is 512, right now. ready? set. shop. ahead on today in the bay holiday deals kicking off early this year, retailers which will be offering some special discounts this week. and the ceo of tesla calls himself dark

is still hot out there. look at san francisco right now in the 70s. humidity is at about 98% around the coastline. but it's going to be another warm day. we've got heat advisories in effect. good news though we do have a cooldown expected. i'll guide you through when that will make its arrival coming up. that will be welcome. meanwhile, over here, those tail lights traveling north on 101 through palo alto. you can now continue up to and through the city. got confirmation? indeed. before 2:00 this morning. they did complete that central freeway project. all lanes have been open since then. no disruptions. that's great news as you're traveling through the city from the peninsula. this morning. well good morning. very happy monday to you. the stock markets went into the weekend in a good mood after that. very strong jobs report. more about the

economy in a minute. tesla stock worth watching this morning to see if there's any reaction to the car company's ceo appearing over the weekend with donald trump. he was back in butler, pennsylvania, returning to the very first spot of that first assassination attempt. elon musk calling himself dark maga and launching himself into the air several times as trump supporters welcomed him to the stage. take over elijah's takeover. thank you. hi everyon. as you can see, i'm not just maga, i'm dark maga. other news, silicon valley chip company cerebras has filed paperwork for an ipo. cerebras makes an enormous dinner plate sized chip for running ai calculations. it's the first major ai ipo in

the ai era. we get inflation numbers later this week as we've discussed in the past, economic numbers have been really good. the american economy added more than a quarter million jobs last month. in fact, we've added more than 7 million jobs since the pandemic. our inflation is deflating faster than any industrial western country following the pandemic. wages are up, unemployment down. now as far as wages. you know, there's data out there that shows women make less than men for the same work. there's a debate as to how much less, but it's less. and there's something called equal pay day. it marks the date where women have to work into the new year to earn just the same amount as men did the year before. well, that's not today. today is reverse equal pay day. now, stick with me. here we are, 280 days or 77% finished with the year 2024. this is the day men have to work until. and then we can quit for
5:19 am
the rest of the year. laura. to earn what women will earn for the entire year. wow. okay, well, you're not going anywhere. you're sticking around to help me out. thank you very much, scott. well, get those wish lists ready. with 79 days until christmas holiday shopping officially underway and some of the top retailers are offering some big deals. target, kohl's, amazon and walmart are kick starting the fall pre-holiday sales events this week. you can see the dates of when their sales events start on your screen. there are deals on clothing, home appliances, tech and exclusive products. heads up many retailers require you to be a member to get some of these deals. so make sure to double check your status before you make your purchase. got to get the deals when you can. exclusive. although i was thinking about retailers, local small businesses, it's tough to probably sell their fall boots and sweaters because no one's in the mood. i know a warm jacket. yeah, i know we're all
5:20 am
sleeveless. the jackets and i have yet to use one, right? you know, it is tough. i mean, i feel like we're entering a week of. we're hoping for relief, but the relief is going to make its arrival, so that's good, right? it's also i know, right. current temperatures though mike and i were just talking about this. he pointed out atlas peak. it's about 82 up there and we do have some 70s and look at san martin 80 degrees right now. we've got 74 in saratoga, 72 in tracy. it is so warm. you're not imagining things. i want to show you as well. if case you were curious about just how hot we got on sunday. excuse that it should say yesterday. not today. santa rosa hit 105 yesterday. the average around this time of year should be about 80 degrees. concord hit 103. san francisco yesterday hit 97, livermore 102 and san jose hit 103 degrees. now we do have that heat advisory that was extended yet again. and this time until 11
5:21 am
p.m. tonight. for all of the highlighted areas, we're going to continue to see that elevated fire danger, which is always a big concern, especially considering how dry it is out there. now, i do want to give you today's forecast. of course. notice we're still going to be reaching some triple digits in areas like morgan hill. gilroy is going to inch closer to that triple digit mark yet again. and then as we inch into that east bay inland area, look at vallejo 100 degrees, concord 100, pleasanton 100, oakland in the 80s. this is likely the reason why we were extended when it came to that heat advisory. redwood city is 91. if you're going to be out and about in the city 80s yet again for san francisco, clear skies. we've got light winds at about 15mph. and you'll notice up through the north bay. ukiah 100 degrees. novato, 97. so when is that relief coming? well, the cooler temps ahead as we inch into that tuesday wednesday forecast. yes, you'll even notice a system approaching now. right now, rain chances could be a possibility. by rain i really mean shower
5:22 am
abilities heading into that kind of thursday friday forecast. but i mean, we have officially started our water year already and if you notice, heading into saturday and sunday, if we don't end up getting any rain, at least we'll get the influence of that cooler air mass that's going to help us out significantly. dropping by as much as 30 degrees in some spots, heading in towards the portion of the weekend. here's your inland area thursday. friday. look at friday 78 degrees. that is what we're looking for fall like weather. san francisco will start to climb down into the 60s, and we'll see the return of a much needed cooling marine layer into the end of the week. all right, mike, how are those roads doing? we'll take a look over here in the east bay. the peninsula, south bay, typically light. and that's what they are right now. you may have noticed this crash over here. south 680, as you're heading down out of fremont. it's on the shoulder, but i do see some brake taps as folks pass by that seen more than brake taps. northbound still has one lane blocked as you're traveling north of 84, heading up toward the stone ridge area,
5:23 am
we have the other crew that clears just shy of there at burnell. that overnight closure has cleared up. 84 picks up the volume coming in out of the tri-valley and out of the altamont pass. no surprises and confirmation they reopened that the central freeway connector just before 2:00 this morning. so again, caltrans got work done early in that project. back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. it is 522 coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. the state wants to hear from you about the home insurance crisis, but you're going to have to act fast. i'm consumer investigator

5:32 am
surprised. our model runs were showing just that. if you look at walnut creek right now, it's about 69 degrees. it's 530 in the morning, so we didn't get much relief overnight. that humidity didn't really recover overnight, which is when we tend to see the recovery of it. and everywhere else. i mean, we've got 70s on this map. look at san francisco right now. i've been seeing some images of san francisco. people were at the beach, people were barbecuing all of it around the beach, of course, because it's still way too dangerous around the hills because of all of that dry brush. now, here's what we can expect. this is until 11 p.m. as of, you know, right now we are looking for a major cooldown heading in towards the end of the week. for tomorrow, we're still going to be seeing some seconds, but that elevated fire danger will remain with us for the remainder of the week. the reason for that, it's still going to be really dry. there's so much brush out there with that low humidity, any sort of spark can really start or spread a fire, so be mindful of that. i'll have a look at your
5:33 am
extended forecast in just a few minutes, though. it's going to be nice to see some cool down. we're looking forward to it. thanks, vanessa. our coverage continues with today in the bay's bob redell, who is live in the east bay, and bob, a lot of folks getting creative, trying to cool off. yes, doing what we've been doing for the past plus week, i should say, because there's been a heat wave out here, you know, staying inside using the air conditioning. the good thing is, vianey was alluding, as those excessive heat warnings have been downgraded to advisories through 11:00 tonight. so what that means is it's going to be hot, just not as hot as we've seen. so here in dublin, for example, temperatures will top out in the high 90s. like 9697 just won't be in the hundreds like we've seen in the days past. this was the scene yesterday in pacifica along the coastline, where many people hit the beach to escape the inland areas where the triple digit temps were taking place. yesterday, you can see the beach was pretty crowded. and this is from the south bay, where yesterday, willow glen
5:34 am
high school moved their football game to the morning to avoid the scorching temperatures. parents told us that they were relieved to hear about the change and happy that the school put the students health and safety first. it's a pretty warm day today, and so if the kids can enjoy the game without, you know, being, you know, dehydrated, i think it's a good thing. and at levi's stadium in santa clara, where yesterday afternoon, the niners took on the arizona cardinals, the temperature was 95 degrees. at kickoff, the field temps were even harder. hotter. excuse me? well over 100 degrees. that, by the way, was the hottest game in the history of levi's stadium. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. yeah. took a toll on our team too, i think. thanks so much, bob. you can track the temperatures on our free nbc bay area app. you can track just how hot it's expected to get in your neighborhood, find it at your local app store. all right.
5:35 am
hopefully no hot heads on the road this morning. mike, you know my sympathies are with the folks who had to work on those road conditions, those projects over the weekend though. so let's remember all those folks who don't get to work in the air conditioning right now. they're moving smoothly. northbound 101 through san jose. pretty typical start to the slowdown. should see more slowing around oakland road. typical there. we do have a new crash reported 680 just north. 242 at 242 and 680 amit. i don't know the direction yet. chp will show us that, but the direction for the slowing pretty typical. the commute for highway four westbound. same thing for 37 westbound. there is a build on the incline coming up from the bay bridge toll plaza, but the toll plaza itself shouldn't show back up for another five minutes or so. so the next time we check, you should see the backup starting to form. but no surprises. getting to the city again. both 680 and the central freeway projects cleared earlier than scheduled. that's great news. no problems this morning. back to you. thank you very much. well, across the world today, people marking one year since the october seventh terror

city, and we're not seeing that extra security right now, of course, because it is early morning. but we may expect that later in the day. communities in san francisco, across the bay area are on edge. leading up to this first anniversary. i want to show you some video from over the weekend where members of the bay area's jewish community held a vigil to remember and honor the victims of the hamas terror attacks, as well as demand to bring the rest of the hostages home. community members, reflecting on the lasting scars of these attacks while also hoping for a united solution to end the war. i think if people are truly interested in helping palestinians, they they're not going to be rooting for war. they're going to be rooting for, you know, get these people back, get this war done. now, also over the weekend, this time in

san francisco, pro-palestinian demonstrators walked the streets of the mission district calling for an end to the war. and a two state solution. the demonstration in san francisco was joined by others across the country over the weekend, and they are not expected to end there now. the national students for justice in palestine are reportedly planning protests to mark what they call a year of genocide in gaza. students here in the bay area, those from san jose state, have called on social media for, to quote, go all out for an upcoming week of rage, that we will continue to monitor that as well as other stories involving revolving the anniversary today of the terrorist attacks. you can find the latest on nbcbayarea.com in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. thank you very much, ginger. well, also in the city, police searching for graffiti vandals who targeted a

year, 60s, but we definitely will warm up into the 80s for san mateo redwood city, san francisco will once again climb into those upper 80s downtown, 85 degrees mission 87 up through parts of the north bay. we've still got a couple hundreds up there as well. clear lake really far. northern area 97, novato 97. sonoma 96. napa 95. and just to give you a sneak peak of the ten day outlook, it does look like we get a sharp drop in temperatures once we get past this sort of monday tuesday stretch with still some upper 80s. you'll notice by the time we inch towards that wednesday thursday forecast, we start to dip down into those 80s. we might even get a couple of 70s as our daytime highs. by the time that we inch into that weekend forecast, we've got a pressure, a low pressure system that's making its approach. we're also monitoring for the possibility of seeing some shower activity even in the forecast. and i know that will be a relief. we need the cloud cover to help cool us off, and that's exactly what we're going to be seeing. but first, let's

go ahead and get a check of how traffic is doing with mike. yeah. as predicted folks, we have the backup visible now at the bay bridge toll plaza. we're right on pace for typical monday morning slowdown on the span itself. they got to back traffic up to keep it moving smoothly on the bay bridge span. no surprises for 37 or highway four. the crash over here coming through concord and pleasant hill was off of the freeway. not an issue for 242, but 242 is showing the slowdown because of that volume. so that's an indicator for contra costa county. we'll look at the rest of the drive where you will have overnight roadwork. i forgot to mention over at the richmond bridge, we're still having one lane blocked overnight in each direction for repair work going on there. vasco road has already started to see a slowdown, so we're now at 20 minutes and growing for the drive out of contra costa county down vasco road to 580 traffic out of the altamont pass. no surprises. it's a pretty smooth drive, just congested coming through the pass itself. southbound 84 shows a build and northbound 101 through san jose. a typical pattern there let me show you
5:44 am
what's coming into the silicon valley here is actually san martin's looking great. a little slowdown starts in as you're heading in toward morgan hill. but we do see that volume starting to build. and that will be the reason why the speeds dip now, as expected in through the area for northbound 101 out of south county. back to you. thanks so much, mike. the nobel prize for medicine is awarded next on today in the bay. the two americans getting the high honor, including one with bay area ties. and what the candidate of your choice will do to the deficit. a warning this morning from economists and celebrating a big win. we hear from the student who won $100,000 in cal's debut on college game day. it was so cool. you got to stick aroun for it. you'red

climbing into the 80s. by the time we get to your lunch hour, we'll already be in those 90 degree temps. that means anything you have to do out and about. as far as outdoor activities, you may want to get that done early. we're going to quickly warm up, and we're not going to get much in the way of relief by 6:00, still in the 80s. don't worry, though, we do have some relief in sight towards the end of the week, and i've got you covered on that extended forecast and i got you covered for the slowdowns. we expect this from north 101. i forgot, as we mentioned, silicon valley, there is an issue. there will be delays for folks taking the blue line. there is disruption due to that
5:48 am
continuing rehab on those tracks. this time we have station closures between branham and the oholone chenowith stations. there are bus bridges in place. just note that if that's the part of the blue line that you take. all right. thank you very much, mike. police are trying to determine if road rage was a factor in a deadly incident last night in concord. it happened when a man was run over and killed outside a gas station and convenience store. it happened about 8:00 in the evening on grant street near solano way. investigators say it started as some sort of argument that they know, and then the incident triggered a brief lockdown until officers arrested a suspect a short time later on nearby overlook road. new this morning. economists are warning both candidates economic plans will add to the u.s. deficit. but scott mcgrew the numbers show that one candidate plan is worse than the other one much bigger number than the others. yeah, it's the nonpartisan committee for a responsible budget. they're warning donald trump's plan for tax cuts and

tax breaks on things like tips and overtime, could add as much as $15 trillion to the national debt over ten years. those are much bigger numbers than we have heard from other economists, who also agree a trump presidency would grow the debt faster than harris. harris plans to, though, cost us that same group estimates about 8 trillion, about half that same group, warning that trump's plan to put tariffs on imported goods would cost american families the middle class, paying about $1,500 more per year for purchased goods. mr. trump has suggested a 20% tariff on imported goods, 60% from china. now trump insists that china pays the tariff on american goods, but that is not the way the tariffs work. tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter. if china were to put a tariff on an american product,
5:50 am
say, ford cars, chinese car dealers and thus the chinese drivers would pay that tariff. now, trump was just campaigning in wisconsin. but the real highlight over the weekend was his return to butler, pennsylvania, to the same spot where a would be assassin tried to take his life. trump borrowed a bit of levity from ronald reagan as he picked up his speech from where he left off. pennsylvania. we love pennsylvania, and as i was saying. as i was saying, his opponent, vice president kamala harris, spent time in north carolina over the weekend visiting with families affected by the flooding following hurricane helene. there is another hurricane on its way to the gulf coast right now. harris has a whirlwind tour of her own, appearing on 60 minutes, an election election special

tonight. former president trump declined to participate, and she's on late night talk shows and was just on a podcast popular with young women. simply no way that you can sit and hear. i love those kids to death and family comes in many forms, and i think that increasingly, you know, all of us understand that, you know, this is not the 1950s anymore. families come in all kinds of shapes and forms, and their families nonetheless. yeah. jd vance, there he criticized her. she says harris lacks something because she has no biological children of her own. she has in her own words, in his words, no stake in the future of the country. all right, let's talk about the u.s. supreme court. it returns to work this morning hearing a variety of new cases, including one over the death penalty. no abortion cases on the docket so

far. the today show is going to have much more about the high court's new term. that's coming up at seven right after today in the bay. laura. thank you. scott. 551 new this morning. two americans just awarded the nobel prize in medicine and one is from right here in the bay area. victor ambros and gary ruvkun were awarded the honor for their discovery of micro rna. that's a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated. ruvkun was born in berkeley, cal. graduate. nobel prize is expected to be announced tomorrow through friday. congratulations. that is exciting, right? all trending this morning. or maybe we should say still trending this morning. the cal student who kicked his way into celebrity status. we are talking about daniel. maybe you already know the story, but if not, there's a moment. here's the moment that he achieved that greatness. come on, you got this. in berkeley, california. you got it. hey! dad! yeah. you

did it! cal sophomore daniel villasenor won $100,000. it happened on espn's college game day early saturday morning at cal for the show's field goal challenge. it's so cute. the livermore native and civil engineering major kicked it from 40 yards, and his grungy old vans slip ons. he said he actually did it on his second try after the hosts upped the prize when he missed it the first time. he says life has hardly been the same since. we did my steps and i was super locked in and focused, and i was able to make it. so how did daniel get to that point? well, first he had to enter a raffle, but he also arrived there at 11 on friday night, and he wore his vans because he says he knew that they'd be comfortable. he also never kicked many footballs, but he did play soccer growing up, so let's not overlook the engineering. i mean, he's probably figured out the angle and the trajectory. i love it, i just let you feel his

enthusiasm. you know, it was so great. i just picture you his parents. yeah. oh, my god, thank god. well, it was i mean, to get there at 11:00 at night. it was cool. but then the whole day, it was just hot so fast. and i'm about to show you just how hot it got yesterday. it got really warm in some spots. we managed to beat a couple of daily record highs across some parts of the bay area, and here's what to expect. so we've got the heat continuing today, but we do have some cooling changes into the midweek. and yes we're still talking about that elevated fire danger, especially in those inland hills. this heat advisory was extended until 11 p.m, but we've got the influence of an onshore flow. what that's going to do for us, it's going to help cool us off. and that's the reason why there is no heat warnings in effect any longer. we're going to notice some nice cooling around the coast. but inland areas gosh. once again up into those triple digits, especially into the interior. so i mentioned that i was going to show you how hot we got on sunday. look at santa rosa. we
5:55 am
managed to hit 105. the average around this time of year is in the 80s in through parts of concord 103 degrees. the average is also in the 80s. typically san francisco yesterday hit a high of 97. that did beat a daily record high. and in livermore, 102, san jose 103. we also beat a daily record high in san jose, so it was definitely not your imagination. you were not being dramatic. it was hot yesterday. yesterday. we're going to see the influence of the onshore flow today, 93 and through parts of milpitas. look at cupertino south san jose 98. and here's what it will look like in the east bay. so 87 in oakland. but then you bump it up by about 15 degrees as we inch closer to that pleasanton concord area around san mateo, 80 degrees. if you're going to go to the city, it's still going to be warm. so it's going to be about 87. not really much of any influence from the marine layer, but it is on its way. we've got a cold front expected in the forecast is about 90 degrees high for today in santa rosa.
5:56 am
and here's what we're monitoring. so the cooler temps ahead. look what happens into saturday. if you look at the time stamp right there in the corner october 12th. what is that green. yes that's a possibility of some rain. we've got a cold front developing now. we're still kind of far out. but what this will mean for us it's early on storm kind of earlier season rain chance that could bring some scattered activity. but even if it doesn't bring rain, at least it will bring a cooldown with the cooler air flow in our atmosphere. look at the 7-day forecast 70s by the time we get to friday for inland areas, and then back to the 60s for san francisco. all right, mike, how are those roads doing? you know, right on schedule. we're seeing that monday morning commute build up here at the toll plaza. still movement, still some space in the lanes, but more to come clearly down the east shore freeway slowing down through richmond continued for highway 37 and highway 4 to 42 also slows down, but walnut creek moves at speed six, 80 and 24 off the split. move well through that portion. we will check these travel times and we're looking at vasco road building on the time now over 20
