a year later, sirens wailing across israel honoring the lives lost during the october 7th terror attacks. as the war in the middle east intensifies. we are live from washington, tracking new airstrikes overnight on the solemn anniversary. and all eyes on the recall. oakland mayor sheng thao putting up a fight this weekend as a high profile community organization plans to speak out against her. the new details as we close in on election day. plus, on alert millions of people racing to prepare for milton set to become a powerful category four hurricane. and we are tracking the storm's path as it barrels toward the u.s. this is today in the bay. thanks for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but first,
6:02 am
let's talk about this heat. boy, overnight, the temperatures are still so high. i know we got no relief. my ac kept kicking on. especially if you live in inland areas. so i don't want you to put your guard down just yet. we've got one more day of temperatures that could still climb into the triple digits. the heat advisory was extended, and right now, yeah, it's 71 degrees and it's 6:00 in the morning. now, just like we're warm right now. we're going to be quick to really get into that upper 80s 90s forecast now. now next what to expect. the heat continues for today. we've got that heat advisory that was extended through the afternoon. the heat warnings were dropped because we've got the influence of an onshore flow. that should help change things up. now heading into the middle of the week. and the lido portion of this week, we do have some cooling changes. so by the time that we get to tomorrow, you'll already notice the daytime highs just a little bit cooler. still warm though, which means yes. still seeing that elevated fire danger, especially for our inland hills. but with that cooling expected ahead, i think you're going to like what you
6:03 am
see in the forecast. so make sure to stick around. i've got you covered on that extended outlook. but first let's get a check of how those roads are doing with mike. yeah, we have a couple of changes. most of your commute pretty predictable for a monday. but over here in the tri valley, southbound 680 shows a slowdown from 580 and stone ridge all the way down to bernal. there was a crew in the northbound direction overnight that cleared on schedule the southbound side. there may be a crew clearing from that direction, although caltrans has nothing scheduled in the grid there. we'll track that. no reports from chp, but clearly the sensors show the slowdown. the other issue is not the slowing through richmond. it's eastbound 580, a westbound 580. as folks are coming off of the north bay side, there's a crew heading into the bridge itself. back to you. thank you very much. well, today marks one year since the october 7th hamas terror attack. the fighting in the middle east is not letting up as the world recognizes this solemn milestone. new video in this morning shows israel launching major airstrikes last night on beirut's southern suburbs. it is the most intense bombardment of the city since
6:04 am
the opening of a broader war with hezbollah last month. the israeli military says fighter jets struck targets belonging to hezbollah's intelligence headquarters and weapons storage facilities. since the october 7th attacks, gaza health officials say more than 40,000 palestinians have been killed in the israel-hamas war. millions have also been displaced from their homes. tensions in the region are only heightened since the attack today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington. this morning. and one year later, alice, more than 90 hostages remain in captivity, including four americans. laura. and that remains a top priority for the biden administration. and it remains an utter heartbreak for all of those families touched by that sad reality. mourners today are reflecting as well on the thousands of lives lost over the course of the past year and taking stock of this current moment when long held efforts by the u.s. and allies to avoid a wider war risk slipping away.
6:05 am
across israel today, ceremonies mark one year of anguish of hostages separated from their families. we miss him so much of palestinians living through unbearable conditions, more than 40,000 dead, according to the gaza health ministry. and 365 days after hamas militants attacked inside israel, killing 1200 and kidnaping more than 200. the suffering is only growing. israel, now battling hezbollah militants in lebanon and vowing retaliation against iranian missile strikes. prime minister benjamin netanyahu not backing down. israel has both the duty and the right to defend itself. that's despite growing criticism, including from the u.s, about the devastating toll on civilians and the fear of an all out regional war. vice president kamala harris on cbs 60 minutes backing israel's right to defend itself while
6:06 am
stressing the need for a ceasefire. the need for humanitarian aid, the need for this war to end, the need for a deal to be done, which would release the hostages. but those negotiations are deadlocked, raising questions about the u.s. ability to influence israeli policy. president biden sharpening his rhetoric toward prime minister netanyahu. no administration has helped israel more than i have. none. none. none. and i think bibi should remember that hostage families pleading for a breakthrough. i will not allow myself to lose my hope. because if i do, who will scream for keith? the cries of millions growing more desperate with no end in sight. in a statement, this morning, president biden urging americans to bear witness to the unspeakable brutality of the october 7th attacks, but also to

the beauty of the lives that were stolen that day. and with the war looming over the presidential race, both nominees will commemorate today's anniversary. vice president harris here in washington, former president trump in florida. laura. all right. thank you very much, alice, for the very latest. 606 now, and authorities have not yet identified the woman who died in what authorities are calling a string of road rage incidents in the north bay. the chaos played out saturday afternoon and the chp tells us that a mazda driver intentionally rammed a car and pushed it into oncoming traffic in rohnert park, leading to a head on crash which killed a woman who was a passenger in that car. investigators say the same suspect soon rammed another car, and when officers arrived, he tried to run from the scene. he's also accused of triggering three other crashes on the very same day. he now faces murder and dui charges. and turning now to decision 2024. later this

morning, oakland's naacp leaders will lay out their reasons for supporting the recall of oakland mayor sheng thao. both sides are now in a push to sway voters, and supporters of mayor thao held a rally yesterday near the rockridge bart station. the mayor also attended, and she talked about what she's done in her time in office. even with the distraction of a recall and federal investigation under my leadership as mayor of oakland, we've made tremendous progress. community. crime is down by 35%, and our downtown is coming back to life with more and more foot traffic every single day. the yes. the mayor's term has been embroiled in controversy also almost from the beginning. it started with the firing of police chief leronne armstrong and a replacement search that took more than a year. it then picked up speed when fbi agents searched her home this summer as part of the investigation, for which she has still not been

charged. we spoke last night with naacp leaders who call her unsuited to lead the city. our members and other members of the community are coming to us with their concern about how the city has been run, and they want to us to make a statement to see if we are going to support it. and as of this time, the president and the board has come to a conclusion that we will support the recall of the mayor. a news conference is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. and if the mayor loses the election, it would be the first time oakland voters have recalled their mayor. the only other two mayoral recall votes took place more than a century ago. with a new hurricane potentially taking aim at florida, leaders in the carolinas are trying to make the focus less on politics and more

about the recovery from hurricane helene. some argue the campaigns on each side are trying to turn it into an election year issue. right now, there are 235 confirmed deaths from helene. tens of thousands in the hardest hit areas are still lacking power and running water. in the meantime, people on the florida coast now preparing for the next big storm. it's called milton forecast to hit the gulf side on wednesday night, and now it is projected to reach hurricane strength with potential life threatening storm surge, damaging winds and torrential rains. i'm meteorologist vianey arana is here, and it's not exactly the same path, but they haven't had time to recover at all. that's the thing. and the intensity of this is really going to develop on how long it stays over those warmer waters. as you know, warmer waters are a key ingredient into the rapid intensification of a hurricane. the movement and the projection of this right now, you can already see it's spinning right here on satellite. we're also
6:11 am
starting to notice more of the formation of that eye in the center. as far as movement goes for this, the projection right now already at a category three. and i do want to show you the trajectory of this as it begins to continue its track, moving east southeast, right now, wind speeds already at 150mph. we've got a pressure of about 940 millibars. and you'll notice over the next couple of days, if all goes according to this trajectory, which of course could change as far as direct pathways, by the time that we inch into that wednesday night category early thursday morning, there is a potential that hurricane milton could become a category four strength hurricane. and if that happens, what we're dealing with here is not only dangerous winds, but also extremely dangerous and potentially deadly storm surge, which could rise about 8 to 12ft in this area. so we're keeping a close eye on this. i will be back, of course, with your local forecast coming up in just a few minutes. first, let's get a

check of traffic with mike and gas prices. thanks, vianey. yeah, we're looking at something a little more dramatic than your drop in temperatures, which was slight over the weekend. saw a little more pronounced drop in for some spots in the bay. 3.85 at the concord in valero and valero's concord valero on willow pass road. next up the south bay. we have 409 in cupertino at our area gas and market. and then let me give you the 411 for the north bay. it's four one, one for 11 in mill valley at arco on redwood highway. you can monitor those changes and keep your fingers crossed over here. gasbuddy.com keeps us all updated on the roadways we're looking at. not a significant change for most of the bay. the good news for me is that i found the reason for this slowing. there's a crash blocking your fast lane south 680 at bernal. no injuries reported, but this is blocking one lane as the commute builds south off of the dublin interchange. meanwhile, your rest of your east bay commute showing a pretty typical pattern. we do have that traffic break for a crew for caltrans. they're trying to address and move some equipment over coming off of the san rafael side. back to you. thank you. mike. one

does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor,
6:16 am
mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need. it's about 71 degrees. we've got mostly clear skies. we quickly warm up into the 70s around 9 a.m. and if you live in the interior, you can expect to climb into the 80s by the time we get to your lunch hour. already in the 90s, one more day of heat advisories before we get some relief. and i've got you covered on the timing and the reasons behind the heat and the cooldown coming up, and the reasons behind the slowing would be more traffic. you're looking at fremont, where we do see the

volume starting to build. nothing dramatic for the nimitz right here. heading south with these headlights into the south bay. we do have other east bay spots that are showing a more considerable slowdown. we'll talk about those coming up. well good morning. very happy monday to you. the stock markets went into the weekend in a good mood after that very strong jobs report. more about the economy in a minute. tesla stock may be worth watching to see if there's any reaction. this morning to the car company's ceo appearing over the weekend with donald trump. he was back in butler, pennsylvania. trump was at the very spot of his first assassination attempt. there's elon musk jumping into the air. he calls himself dark maga, repeatedly launching himself into the air several times as trump supporters welcomed him to the stage. take over. elijah's takeover. hi everyone. as you

can see, i'm not just maga, i'm dark maga. other news, silicon valley chip company cerebras has filed paperwork for an ipo. they make an enormous dinner plate sized chip for running ai calculations. it's the first major ai ipo in the ai era. we'll get inflation numbers later this week. as we've discussed in the past, economic numbers are really good. american economy added more than a quarter million jobs last month. in fact, we've added more than 7 million since the pandemic. our inflation is deflating faster than any industrial western country following the pandemic. wages are up and unemployment is down. as far as wages, you know, there's data out there that show women make less than men for the same work. there's a debate as to how much less, but it's less and there's something called equal pay day that marks the date where women have to work into the new year to just earn
6:19 am
the same amount as men did the year before. well, that's not today. today is the reverse equal pay day. all right, stick with me here. we're 280 days, or 77%. finished with 2024. so this is the day men have to work until. until we can quit for the rest of the year to earn what women will earn in the entire year. not fair. so i'm going home. i don't think so, because it's the average man. yes, yes. and we are not the average lady. you are not the average lady. we're going to keep you here. all right. thank you. scott. well, new at 6:00. hillary clinton fans will be able to see her in person tonight in san francisco. the former secretary of state and first lady appearing in a sold out event at davies hall. she's here to discuss her new book called something lost. something gained reflections on life, love and liberty. it gets underway at 7:00 tonight. also trending this

morning, a long awaited follow up in the princess diaries franchise is in the works. a princess shut up. out! shut up! oh, that is anne hathaway teasing the upcoming princess. that was anne hathaway teasing the princess diaries three the oscar winning actress, who first played san francisco teenager turned princess mia thermopolis back in 2001, has already signed on. filmmaker adele lim is behind the project. it is unknown yet the status of julie andrews in the upcoming film. fellow oscar winner played hathaway's grandmother, queen clarice rinaldi, in the original and its sequel. it is unclear at this point whether they will come back to san francisco for filming that would be fun to see. all right, well, we've got some updates when it comes to the hurricane. the latest hurricane to hit florida. we do.
6:21 am
we are seeing a rapid intensification. within one hour. we have gone from 125 mile per hour winds to 150. the national hurricane center now officially calling this a category four. initially projected to become a possible category four on friday, that means the rapid intensification of this. the models are having a tough time picking up just how quickly this is beginning to develop. the pressure has now officially dropped to 940 millibars. you can see it here on the model struggling right there. now, one thing, of course, that we have to continue to worry about. i talked about this. the ingredients for a hurricane are warm waters. and as it continues its trek over the next couple of days, what we don't hope to see is for it to intensify behind. beyond that category four right now, ajecto e having a tough time projecting this just based on what i've seen today. so we have to keep a close eye on this. wind speeds 150mph officially, and that's
6:22 am
going to change things heading into the upcoming days. so we'll keep you updated on that. now bringing it back here locally for us, the heat has been a big risk over the past couple of days. really. this heat wave has been intense and we're waking up to 60s and 70s, so really not getting much relief in the way of heat overnight. and that's the reason why we've got that heat advisory in effect until 11 p.m. for all of the highlighted areas. now, we've got an onshore flow that's going to help us out quite nicely over the next couple of days. but we've also got a change in the forecast coming up. first, i want to show you your daytime highs for this afternoon. we've got 90s and triple digits expected for inland areas. you'll notice east bay will be likely one of the warmest concord 100 degrees in around san mateo and daly city. we're going to be in the 80s and of course, up through parts of the north bay 90s and triple digits. now i want to show you the reason why that we're going to be cooling down. we had high pressure, as you know, that creates a dome of hot, dry mass air trapping everything at the surface. the only way to push out a high pressure system is for a different system to set
6:23 am
up. and in this case, we've got a low pressure system right behind that. that's developing into a cold front as well. we've got a cold front. guess what on saturday. look at that approach. we've got some potential for some rain chances. now. this is an earlier season storm. so this could develop either in our favor or just kind of push out and dry out. but the influence of the cooler weather will definitely make itself known as we begin to drop down by as much as 30 degrees in some spots. look at that relief. we will see the return of that marine layer for san francisco. i know the city was enjoying the sunshine, but i'm sure it will be nice to get a break from the heat. all right, mike, how are those roads doing? they're still warm as well. we're also seeing more traffic build up over here out of richmond, heading across the bridge. no surprises. we do have the eastbound clearing out. the traffic continues to clear the caltrans equipment. the rest of this east bay shot looks pretty standard, but notice the slower drive developing for walnut creek continued slowing through sunol and pleasanton. for south 680, we havmore news, weathere

there's some relief on the way. we have the updated timeline for when we might see some cooler temperatures. flying into san francisco fleet week returns to the city by the bay. we break down everything you need to know. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the morning off. we want to get right to that forecast because we have been watching it so closely. vianey. and finally, we're seeing something coming down. we are. and you'll notice today when you're out and about, it's still going to feel warm, but at least it won't be as hot as what we saw over the weekend. look at sunday's highs in case you were curious about just how hot we got for your sunday, we did manage to beat a couple of daily record highs. and i want to show you in santa rosa, it reached 105. the average temperature for around this time is. in the 80s, concord reached 103. san francisco hit a high of 97 degrees. livermore 102 and
6:33 am
san jose 103 degrees. typically, we're in the 70s around this time of year for san jose, so as we inch into that afternoon, you'll notice by 1:00 we're going to climb into the 90s already. so it's still going to be warm. san jose is not expected to reach triple digits today, but some areas could in through the interior. san francisco will hit a high in the 80s today, so it's still going to be above average. and then we get the cooler air settling in. starting tomorrow, i'll have a closer look at that extended forecast and maybe even hey, rain chances in our future. what what is going on now? thank you. vianey. our coverage continues with today in the bay bob redell, who is live in the east bay. and bob, it's been hot even during the early morning hours. how are folks cooling off? well, it's actually pretty nice right now in dublin. i will say that i feel like it's high 60s. so it's mild, but it is going to hit the triple digits in our 30 degrees later today, which is good news because we've had triple digits
6:34 am
yesterday and the day before out here in the tri-valley. as vianey was mentioning, national weather service has downgraded its excessive heat warning to an advisory until 11:00 tonight. so again, the headline is we're not going to see the triple digits necessarily here in the tri-valley just to high 90s. so it's going to still be hot. this was the scene yesterday in pacifica along the coastline, where many people hit the beach to escape the inland areas, which experienced those triple digit temps on sunday. you can see the beach was pretty crowded and this is from the south bay, where yesterday, willow glen high school moved their football games to the morning to avoid those scorching temperatures. parents told us they were relieved to hear about the change and happy the school put the students health and safety first. it's a pretty warm day today and so if the kids can enjoy the game without, you kno, being, you know, dehydrated, i think it's a good thing. at levi's stadium in santa clara, where yesterday afternoon, the 49ers took on the arizona cardinals, the temperature was
6:35 am
95 degrees. at kickoff. the field temps were even hotter, well over 100 degrees. that was the hottest game in the history of levi's stadium. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. it has been rough. thank you bob. now we can track the temperatures on our free nbc bay area app. we'll show you how hot it's expected to get in your neighborhood, so you can plan around that, and you can find that in your local app store. it is 634 across the world today. people are marking one year since the october 7th terror attack. that's when hamas invaders killed more than 1200 people in israel. this morning, thousands gathered at the site of a music festival where many of those atrocities took place. of the 250 israelis kidnaped that day, about 90 are still being held hostage, including four americans. and the fighting in the middle east is not letting up, as the world recognizes this solemn milestone. new video just in

6:37 am
to mourn over the loss of the past year. here is some video from over the weekend from palo alto, where members of the bay area's jewish community held a vigil to remember the victims of the october 7th hamas terrorist attacks. they are also demanding that the rest of the hostages be brought home. now, community members there, reflecting on the lasting scars of the attacks, all while hoping for a united solution to end the war. i think if people are truly interested in helping palestinians, they they're not going to be rooting for war. they're going to be rooting for you know, get these people back, get this war done, be free palestine, free, free palestine. now, also over the weekend, this time in san francisco, pro-palestinian demonstrators walked the streets of the mission district calling for an end to the war and

reaction, but he declined to comment. well, police are trying to figure out whether road rage was a factor in a deadly crash last night in concord. this happened about 8:00 last night when a man was run over and killed outside a gas station and convenience store. police say they soon afterward got a flood of 911 calls from bystanders near grant street at solano way. investigators now say this started as some sort of argument. the incident did trigger a brief lockdown until officers were able to arrest that suspect a short time later on nearby overhill road. happening today, jury selection is expected to get underway in the case against the man accused of stabbing a san francisco tech executive to death. nima mckinney is accused of killing bob lee in april 2023. lee was best known for being the founder of cash app. investigators say he stabbed lee because of a dispute surrounding his sister. defense attorneys, though, are expected to claim that this was
6:40 am
a stabbing that happened in self defense. opening statements are scheduled to begin one week from today. now to a live look in san francisco, where fleet week is getting underway. military ships over the weekend arrived through the golden gate. sky ranger captured video of the blue angels arriving in oakland yesterday as well. the group performs its first practice run over san francisco on thursday, preparing for next weekend's air show. some festivities start as soon as today, and don't forget nbc bay area has you covered for all things fleet week. on our website, you can find a list of all the events. just head to the trending bar and select sf fleet week guide, or simply search for fleet week on our website mobile app. it's all at nbcbayarea.com. well, the question for fleet week is always will they be able to fly? will we be able to see them, and will we be able to be outside? well you know, we yeah, that's the thing. i think the skies are clear right. but it's
6:41 am
like the heat and it's the entire week. right. it takes place this whole week. okay, great. so the temperature is going to get much more comfortable. and at least we'll still keep some of the clear skies. but we do have the return of fog later in the week. so that could bring an element of maybe for some surprise. but we've got some temperatures in the 80s at around 11 a.m. right now, walnut creek is about 69. and i want to show you our daytime highs for today because we are going to be seeing at least one more day of the sort of heat wave factor that's going to be pulling in a couple of triple digits in spots like morgan hill. look at east san jose, 98, in through parts of the east bay, 100 degrees for concord, 100 in pleasanton, livermore 102. oakland will once again climb into those 80s. and if you're going to be around the peninsula and the bay, we've got 80s, 90s and 70s in for san francisco. we've got some upper 80s in for mission. so you'll notice the clear skies. we've got light wind speeds at about 15mph. but even so, with these light wind speeds, remember, in those higher elevations, especially with that dry brush,
6:42 am
we're still talking about elevated fire danger. we saw some of those humidity levels drop down to below 10%. so why is that an important factor when it comes to vegetation? we like to see that humidity level above 40%. it gives that enough moisture for the vegetation to remain somewhat. you know, at a better level. but with this heat dome, with this high pressure, it does the opposite of that. it kind of traps all of the heat, it raises the temps, and it also traps a lot of pollutants closer to the surface, which is why we saw several spare the air alerts. but we have good news. we've got an onshore flow creeping in, a low pressure system that's going to move that high pressure system out, and i'll get you covered on that in a second. first, we've got to check in with mike. yeah. we got more pressure on the bridge itself moving in because it's this time of the commute west 92 across the san mateo bridge. no problems, just a lot of cars slowing the speeds. because of that volume. traveling west, there's a flat section, high rise starting to slow a little bit. so prepare for that. more traffic coming in off of the east bay. good changes on these

national debt over ten years. that's a much bigger number than we've heard from other economists who also agree. a trump presidency would grow the debt faster than harris. harris's plan, too, would cost us that. same group estimates 8 trillion. about half that same group warns that trump's plan to put tariffs on imported goods would cost american families the middle class, paying about $1,500 more per year for imported goods in that tariff system. mr. trump suggested a 20% tariff on all imported goods, 60% from china. now, trump insists china pays the tariff america puts on chinese goods. but that just is not the way tariffs work. tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter. if china were to put a tariff on an american product, say, ford cars, chinese car dealers and thus chinese drivers would pay that tariff. trump was
