us first. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so much has changed since that day a year ago when hamas militants killed more than 1,200 people across southern israel and took hostages, about 101 of them still believed to be held captive. now the entire middle east is in conflict, and there are escalating conflicts in gaza, the escalating conflict here in lebanon. and the world is now bracing to see how israel responds to iran for its latest missile barrage. >> this morning israelis commemorated the moment a year ago when several thousand hamas gunmen broke out of gaza and went on a killing and kidnapping rampage across southern israel. israel was blindsided and struggled to respond to the hamas attacks in more than 30 locations. it took hours to send reinforcements and days to repel the assault. it was israel's 9/11.
7:08 am
now israel is at war, reducing gaza to rubble with more than 41,000 killed, according to the hamas-run health ministry. israel this weekend launched a new offensive in northern gaza claiming hamas has regrouped. and in lebanon, an air and ground war is intensifying against hezbollah, but the group is still able to launch rockets, overnight hitting the israeli city. prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke to israeli troops on the lebanese border. a year ago we suffered a terrible blow. in the past 12 months, we are changing the reality from end to end, he said. netanyahu has never accepted responsibility for the october 7th intelligence and security failings and says an inquiry will come after the war. a former director of the mossad. how much responsibility do you think prime minister netanyahu bears?
7:09 am
>> he is responsible because he got some early warning, even though it was not the exact date, the exact location, but it was an early warning. and he did not pay attention to it the way the prime minister should pay attention to it. >> reporter: and this morning hamas said it fired rockets toward tel aviv. there are no reports of casualties. over the last year, israel has re-established its deterrence and proven its intelligence capabilities. but critics say that the prime minister's government has launched a serious war with little thought to what comes after. >> all right. richard, thank you. well, the day began with an emotional memorial at the site of the nova music festival, led by israeli president isaac herzog. nbc's raf sanchez is there for us. good morning. how are the victims being remembered there?
7:10 am
>> reporter: good morning. this whole site has been turned into a vast memorial for the roughly 350 people that were killed here. their names, their faces, their stories remembered. there was a memorial ceremony at sunrise here, attended by the israeli president. and they played the last track that festivalgoers heard on october 7th before the music stopped and the shooting started. we have been hearing shooting all day here. it's coming from gaza, two miles that way. there are no memorial ceremonies in gaza, just another day of palestinian families trying to survive as this war drags on. with every passing day, fears growing for the hostages. 40 of them were kidnapped from this site, and one year on, almost unbelievably, about half of them are still in hamas captivity in gaza. >> raf, thank you very much. and one of those hostages taken a year ago is a 22-year-old israeli-american born and raised

7:12 am
he celebrated his 22nd birthday in captivity. he's about to have his 23rd birthday in captivity. as a mom, i mean, to not know where your son is and have any word of him? >> you know, savannah, for us, this whole thing just began on october 7th. the last time i spoke to him was on october 6th, and everything seemed fine. and i haven't heard his voice since. i don't know if he's alive. i pray and hope every single day that he's still alive. but for us, its been a prolonged terrorist attack, and for the hostages, for sure. you know, just a month ago with the execution of the six young people and hersh goldberg-polin among them, there was no room left for imagination about the conditions that they're being held, which are horrendous. just yesterday, we heard from military in israel that the

conditions have worsened. so, we don't understand. you know, where is the sense of urgency? >> have you heard any word specifically about omar, that sometimes messages get through or other intelligence officials? have you heard any word at all? >> unfortunately, we're in the dark for one year. nothing about omar except for the video of abduction that hamas propaganda posted from october 7th or 8th. that's it. >> let's talk about what you just mentioned, lorna. these deals have come close and then they have fallen apart. there was a deal so close, it seemed, in august, and then hamas executed several of the hostages, including hersh-polin. to live through that, what is your message to our leaders right now? >> the one thing we keep hearing and has been so disappointing in
7:14 am
the last year is that we're lacking political will, that all sides really want an agreement, it would have been reached. that is extremely disappointing to us from all leaders on all sides. everyone involved in the negotiations on this, again, we don't feel there is a sense of urgency, and that's extremely upsetting, disappointing and angering, really. >> you sat across from benjamin netanyahu, as well as president biden. i know you speak to white house officials all the time. what do you say to them? >> we tell them we're looking for brave, strong leadership that will push all the mediators in the area, the qatar and turkey and egypt and, of course, bring hamas as well as netanyahu and his government to the table and take brave decisions because it's time. it's now a year.
7:15 am
how long is it gonna take? >> hamas is responsible. hamas did this full stop. >> for sure. >> but do you think that there is more that israeli officials, netanyahu, that american officials could be doing? what more? what would you like to see them doing? >> take brave decisions, bring us to a cease-fire. the hostage release will be the key to bring down all the tension in the middle east. and it has to start from the hostages. there are 101, including elderly women, children, and, of course, our son and many other men. it is time to bring them home. it's urgent. they are dying there. >> the military has had amazing achievements over the past year. we've heard from the whole military apparatus in israel a couple months ago already that the time was right for a deal at that point, that israel, you
7:16 am
know, is much safer than it was, and it's not in the same risk that they were there. and it's time to bring out the hostages, because we know that every day that they're there, their conditions are worsened and they're dying. >> finally, i read that you say a prayer, psalm 23, every morning. how do you hold on to hope in a scenario like this? >> we must hold on to hope, you know. even the mere thought that our son is waiting there to be rescued, you know, calls us to action every single day. and like rachel said, hope is mandatory. we boent -- don't question it. but, you know, hope in our leaders has become very grim. >> we know our son is expecting us to do everything in the world to bring him home, and that's what we're doing. and we'll bring him home. >> you are. and i know it's not easy to be
