extended. his mother is calling that ruling an injustice. thousands of san francisco families will find out today which schools could close or merge next year. it comes as district leaders have been dealing with declining enrollment and budget issues. according to the chronicle, as many as 14 of the district's 121 schools could be on the chopping block. the board will vote on the closures in december. well, millions of people along florida's gulf coast are bracing for the arrival of hurricane milton. now churning through the gulf. now it is expected to make landfall sometime tomorrow. milton reached category five strength yesterday and overnight dropped back to a category four. people living within florida's evacuation zone are being told to leave. all right, well, that does it for us here on today hi there hi there. good tuesday morning. florida is racing to prepare for a potentially catastrophic

>> they sure did. 50th, 48th, 49, all around. but let us get to our top story. all eyes are on hurricane milton. the national weather system saying if it stays on course as you see right here, it will be the most powerful hurricane to hit tampa in more than 100 years. >> the mayor of that city went as far as to give residents in evacuation areas, this grim warning. and i'm quoting here. if you choose to stay, you are going to die. it appears that a lot of people on florida's west coast are heeding that dire warning. you can see, this is the rush to get away from that region ahead of the storm's arrival. >> and this is all playing out with the clean up from hurricane helene still under way. and that causes additional, major concerns. those big piles of debris now lining the streets. those can pose hazards once the heavy winds arrive. we have everything you need to know, including al's full forecast. but let us start with nbc's tom llamas, right on the coast, near tampa. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning to you.

this is one of those huge piles of debris just behind me. in some cases six feet high. there are parts of the florida gulf coast look just like this on both sides of the street. as you mentioned during this hurricane, it will be even more dangerous. this is a mix of furniture, parts of people's homes and their belongings. residents here facing back-to-back hurricanes in less than two weeks now told to evacuate once again. all along florida's gulf coast, the race to escape is on. residents filling sandbags, boarding up windows and trying to clear debris that hurricane helene left behind, with up to 15 feet of storm surge possible. state officials are preparing for the largest evacuation since hurricane irma in 2017. freeways already gridlocked for miles. tampa's mayor with this blunt warning. >> if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you are going to die. >> reporter: this tampa resident

taking no chances after helene's storm surge threatened her home. >> my kids can't unsee what happened last time and i don't want that to be another experience for them. >> reporter: officials are concerned about this one, with all the debris piled up. it could be lifted up by the hur kab-force winds and become dangerous projectiles. milton's winds reaching up to 180 miles per hour. the cat 4 hurricane visible from the international space station as it moves across the gulf of mexico. on nbc 6 south florida, veteran meteorologist john morales emotional at the storm's increasing threat. >> i apologize. this is just horrific. >> 3.5, 4 feet, so around here. >> tampa general, facility's manager was here during helene, making sure the hospital's aqua fence was holding strong against the dangerous storm surge.

he knows it could be even worse this time. so they're forecasting potentially a 12 foot storm surge with hurricane milton. will this hold up? >> it should. 12 feet is about here. you still have another maybe 3 feet. it will depend on a lot of things. >> reporter: in neighborhoods devastated by hurricane helene, residents like abby lewis are trying to keep it together as they try to escape this relentless hurricane season. >> i haven't allowed myself to kind of take in the emotional aspect. >> reporter: saving just a few precious momentos. >> a good moment. but got to keep it together. >> reporter: no time to grieve what's been lost. do you have any idea what you're going to come back home to? >> well, it's already gone. a lot of us not knowing where we'll go. >> the mayor of tampa saying you've got to evacuate, as she said, you will die. a lot of people trying to get out, tom. it's bumper to bumper traffic, they need gas, they need money. what does that look like?

>> reporter: yeah, there are miles of traffic. actually this morning we have a live traffic cam right now. and even early this morning that traffic is backing up. this is the famous i-4 that cuts across florida. this is potential tampa and orlando, heading northeast as the first time i'm seeing this. but you can see the traffic right there. it's already backing up. and you bring up a good point, hoda, right? these people, this is another week of no work and now they have to pay to travel again to evacuate. hotels are filling up on social media they're saying gas is hard to come by. and in some cases, people just can't find a place to stay. they have to keep driving. hoda and savannah? >> terrible situation there for a lot of people in florida. >> absolutely. imagine if you've got a young family in tow as well. let's bring in al. he's got the latest update on the storm's track. >> yeah, guys. unfortunately, all of florida either under a hurricane watch or hurricane warning for the most part. as this system has weakened a bit. but don't be fooled. this is still a dangerous system.

category 4 storm, 560 miles southwest of tampa, 155 mile-per-hour winds. it's moving northeast a little faster at 12 miles per hour at this point it comes somewhere just either a little south or north of tampa bay. landfall, wednesday night, between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. and here is the deal, even as it weakens, it's going to grow in size. what happens? well, when you have this area -- when it's really strong, the tropical wind field is relatively small, about 200 miles across. but as it comes on shore, because it weakens, the wind field will nearly double by landfall. i mean, 375 miles across. even if it comes in here, it's still a problem up and down that coast. and that storm surge is the big problem. the larger the storm it is, it can push more water, funneling that water in to the coast. that storm surge warning, where we could see anywhere from 10 to 15 feet or more depending if it

comes at high tide. thursday, 6:51 a.m. so, this is a very dangerous system. still even if it does weaken. wind gusts anywhere from 90 to 100 miles per hour as it comes on shore and flooding rain fall, considerable flash flooding especially orlando, tampa, sarasota. now we up the rain fall amounts up to maybe 18 inches of rain or more. if you're getting ready to evacuate, our colleague bill karins had a great idea. take some digital pictures of things around your house before you evacuate so you have some proof of what you have. because this is going to be dangerous. put all of your valuable documents in a plastic bag, take them with you and get the heck out. >> al, thank you. of course we'll have a lot more on this storm throughout the morning. programming note, lester holt will be reporting live from florida tonight on "nbc nightly news." meantime, the race for the white house is entering the closing stretch. just four weeks to go until election day. vice president harris spreading her message to voters in a

series of high-profile interviews including "60 minutes." the program also explaining why former president trump cancelled his planned interview for the primetime special. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander has the very latest. hey, peter, good morning. >> reporter: hoe ad good morning. "60 minutes" interviewed the major candidate in presidential election. dating back a half century. this year donald trump cancelled. like kamala harris, trump initially accepted before backing out, citing in their words, shifting explanations. including that he would be fact checked. last night, harris faced tough questions on a wide range of topics. in the final month until election day, kamala harris looking to persuade undecided voters in a series of interviews. last night on "60 minutes" the vice president responding to criticism that she changed her

position on key issues from fracking to. >> i have been listening to folks and seeking what is possible in terms of common ground. >> whether she regretted the border policy. >> from day one, literally, we have been offering solutions. >> what i was asking was, was it a mistake to kind of allow that flood to happen in the first place? >> i think the policies that we have been proposing are about fixing a problem, not promoting a problem. okay? >> but the numbers did quadruple. >> and the numbers today because of what we have done, we have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half. >> reporter: harris was also asked for more details on a recent revelation that she is a gun owner. >> i have a glock, and i've had it for quite some time. and, i mean, look, my background is in law enforcement, and so there you go. >> have you ever fired it? >> yes. of course i have. at a shooting range.

>> reporter: former president trump appearing on a previously-taped fox news interview asked by laura ingram whether he'll use the justice system to go after his political rivals. >> a lot of people say that's what should happen. >> pressed further -- >> but you are not going to do that. when you get into office you will look at all your political enemies and -- >> no, i want to make this the most successful country in the world. >> reporter: meanwhile, as hurricane milton barrels toward florida, trump is again slamming the biden administration's helene response. >> we're up to $300 billion for ukraine and, yet, they're offering people $750. >> for immediate needs. >> for the worst -- yeah. but for the worst hurricane that anybody has seen. >> reporter: in fact, fema says that $750 is an initial direct relief payment for emergency supplies -- like food and water. while they assess a person's eligibility for more money. harris seizing on trump's claims. >> it is extraordinarily irresponsible. >> peter, we've got some new poll numbers this morning.

what are the take-aways? >> reporter: yeah, that new poll is from "the new york times" and it shows harris leading trump in their poll for the first time since july. that's when president biden dropped out of the race. harris' advantage nationally is three points. 49 to 46. notably that is within the margin of error. likely voters said that harris was the candidate representing change in this election. the first time she led on that question, though the two are basically even. trump's main advantage remains on who voters trust to manage american's top issues, savannah, the economy. >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you, peter. 7:13. a lot more to get to. craig joins the table. >> hoda, savannah, good morning. good morning to you as well. we are following some breaking news from the middle east overnight. israel launching new air strikes inside lebanon, targeting hezbollah leaders. and those air strikes coming just hours after events all around the world, marking one year since the deadly october 7th terror attack. nbc's chief foreign

correspondent, richard engel is in beirut for us. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. israel's enemies are under attack, but also firing intensely in the last 24 hours, hezbollah here in lebanon, hamas in gaza and the houthis in yemen together fired around 200 missiles, rockets and drones at israel, mostly to little effect. e [ sirens ] israel's enemies opened fire overnight in what seemed to be a coordinated barrage to show israel they're still standing. israel fired into beirut and across southern lebanon in what the israeli military described as extensive strikes. on hezbollah terror targets. israel has been carrying out air strikes on the city of tyre. we counted ten just in that area. after a day of memorials for the 1,200 israelis killed on october

four siblings before her. she lives with her aunt and is writing a children's book. it tells the story of an orphaned child in gaza. who suffered the same thing, the sole survivor, like me, she says. alma draws pictures of better days ahead. the bird i drew symbolizing no found in and this morning a suggestion that hezbollah is open to a cease-fire. the group's deputy leader says hezbollah supports negotiations and he didn't directly link them to a deal in gaza, a sign diplomacy may possibly have an opportunity here. >> our chief foreign correspondent richard engel, thank you. here at home, the largest water utility company in the country announced it was the victim of a cyberattack.

at 726, i'm laura garcia. here's a look at our top stories, including an early morning house fire in central contra costa county. i'm barbara del. we're here on monroe avenue in lafayette, where the fire department has put out a house fire started around 5:00 this morning. the fire department tells us that an older man was living there by himself. he was able to get out on his own. interestingly, he did smell something burning, a burning smell around 10:00 last night. went to look to find out what it was. couldn't find it until. unfortunately, the house caught fire this morning. as you can see in this video, the other two homes that are very close on either side were saved. and again, no injuries. a judge has dropped charges for two alameda police officers in the death of a man in their custody. mario gonzalez died in april of 2021 after being pinned to the ground. the judge says the charges against james fisher and cameron lehigh are exceeded. the three year statute of limitations, but the charges

of other debris out here. and we see this all the time after hurricanes. but now there's another one on the way. and when milton roars ashore, all of this becomes an even bigger problem. this morning, florida is racing to remove trunk loads of debris, and the clock is running out. >> that's a 24/7 round-the-clock mission. we need as much of this debris picked up as possible. this creates a safety hazard. >> reporter: across florida's gulf coast, streets and sidewalks are littered with parts of destroyed homes, splintered lumber, hef pieces of furniture and household items after hurricane helene gutted the region less than two weeks ago. now another major hurricane, milton, is less than 48 hours from landfall in the same region, turning trash into potential projectiles and storm surge battering rams. >> it can make it harder for our

we're talking about storm surge of 10 to 15 feet, ft. myers. 10 to 15 rain fa,fall, up to a foot. early thursday morning as this passes across the florida peninsula, orlando from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., the most extreme conditions with a storm surge for jacksonville 3 to 5 feet. orlando, you are looking at 6 to 10 inches of rain. that storm surge, of course, powerful winds pushing the water up against the coast, wrapping around that system, pushing the winds and the water up against the coast as it happens. the water piles up, rising above the ocean the normal height of the tide. and that just ratchets up into the shoreline and into communities along the shore. we will be watching that very closely. the storm surge is the most deadly part of the hurricane. that's what's going on around u the coun

we will start with hurricane milton. that massive storm bearing down on florida's gulf coast. state officials warning residents that the evacuation window is closing quickly. al has the latest on the storm's path. first let's check in with tom llamas, who is right on the coast near tampa. hey, tom, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning to you. listen, the mayor of tampa told me last night they are working around the clock to clear out all the debris you see here. but she's not sure their going to pick all of it up because there's so much of it. six feet high in some cases on both sides of the street. we're just south of tampa right now. and it looks like this all around everywhere you look. the good news is we do hear the dump trucks this morning. they are picking up this debris, but again, they're going to be working around the clock. those landfill sites staying open throughout the night. so people can dump all that stuff and come back and pick up more. as you mentioned, the evacuation order is on for areas like this. millions try to get out from florida's gulf coast. we are hearing reports from gas stations running out of gas. hotels being sold out and

there's nowhere for people to go. they are driving up north or east as hurricane milton just gets stronger and heads towards the gulf coast. hoda, this could be the most powerful storm that ever hits the tampa bay area, at least in the last 100 years. back to you. >> pretty frightening. tom llamas for us, thank you. tom, thank you. little after 8:00 we usually get an update about this time. what do you know? >> right now much of florida under hurricane watches, hurricane warnings. this just in from the national hurricane center, the winds are down to 145 miles per hour. don't let that fool you. it's expected to restrengthen from a category 4 to 5 later today, moving northeast at 12 miles per hour. later today it becomes 5 again. makes landfall sometime tomorrow between 10:00 p.m. ant 2:00 a.m. and the expanding wind field, as it weakens, it gets stronger. 200 miles out, that's the wind field for tropical force winds. by the time it makes landfall,

look at this, 375 miles in diameter. we'll continue to watch that. and because the stormt gets larger from the wind standpoint, that storm surge gets even worse. funneling into right between tampa, sarasota, that's where we could see the greatest storm surge, so to 15 feet, more likely closer to sarasota than for tampa. the surge could travel several miles inland. high tide thursday morning, 6:51 a.m. that would be the worst time for that to happen. destructive winds, anywhere from 80 to 95 or higher for wind gusts. and the risk of considerable flash flooding from orlando, down to sarasota is very high looking at upwards of 18 inches of rain, guys. >> al, we'll come back in just a few moments. meanwhile, as florida braces for hurricane milton, states in the south are still recovering from helene. a lot of those folks are facing a different kind of challenge now. a wave of misinformation, so much so that fema has now launched a web page to fact check all of the false rumors

that are out there. nbc's antonia hilton is in burnsville, north carolina, with more on this part of the story. antonia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. in recent days former president trump and other republicans have questioned fema's response to helene. in some cases, falsely claiming that federal funding has been diverted to help migrants at the expense of storm victims. now, the head of fema is pushing back. the head of fema attempting to set the record straight. after her agency has been repeatedly accused of an inadequate response hurricane helene by former president trump. >> kamala spent all her fema money, on housing for illegal migrants. >> responding on cnn. >> one, it's categorically false. i can assure you that no funding has been taken from the disaster relief funds. >> reporter: in the last two years, fema has distributed more than $1 billion in taxpayer money to shelter migrants in cities across the u.s.

but the white house and fema both say that's a separate government program, not for disaster relief. adding there's no evidence funds have been diverted. the vehement defense comes as the federal government rushes to prepare florida for a second hurricane. governor ron desantis saying monday, the government is working with his state. >> we have gotten what we need from the feds. >> reporter: the federal government also sending in additional 500 troops to north carolina. to help with search and rescue efforts and to bring aid to people left with little after hurricane helene. some residents, especially in remote towns, say they haven't seen any federal aids. >> have they come to your neighborhood, knocked on your door? >> no. >> reporter: one common false rumor, fema will om provide families $750. >> we're into $300 billion for ukraine and yet they're offering people $750 -- >> for immediate needs. >> yeah. but for the worst hurricane that anybody has seen. >> reporter: that $750 is just for urgent essential items, like
