today, tuesday, october 8th, 2024. breaking news. the rush to escape. millions across florida are trying to get out before hurricane milton makes landfall, it could be one of the most destructive hurricanes in decades. our crews are on the ground. al roker is here tracking the time line. also breaking, taking on tiktok, 14 states file suits against the social media platform, claiming that it's preying on children. the case they're laying out and how tiktok is now responding. thinking bigger! have you noticed that box of cereal or bag of chips isn't quite lasts as long as it used to. and a turn for the better, are you one of millions of americans, an expert will walk us through the moves you can do

to get relief. the breaking news, evacuations under way right now ahead of direct impact in florida from hurricane milton, right now it's a category 4 storm out in the gulf, it's gaining strength ahead of expected landfall tomorrow night. this is a massive storm. look at that from space, you see it there, it's more than 300 miles wide, some impacts from milton will be felt as early as tomorrow afternoon, that's way you see the roads, lots of traffic out there, officials saying in florida now's the time to get out. if you're in an evacuation zone. hospitals are being cleared out. schools are already closed in some areas. there's also a rush to get supplies, some gas stations are tapped out. gasbuddy said nearly 8,000 stations are out of fuel already.

we'll get to our correspondents in florida in just a moment. but first, al roker, give us the very latest. this looks like a monster. >> reporter: it does, in fact, this thing is starting to intensify, visible satellite th shows that eye redeveloping, right now much of the state of florida under hurricane warnings from coast to coast, fort myers, tampa, orlando, tropical storm warnings further to the south, hurricane watches as well and as this system gets itself together, 520 miles southwest of tampa, with winds now up to 155 miles per hour, it's moving northeast at 8 miles per hour, path of this system is going to bring it some time late tomorrow evening, around 11:00 to 3:00 a.m., it will make landfall as a possibly category 4 storm or stronger, when it starts to lose

some of its strength it's going to grow in size as it gradually weakens. right now tropical storm-force winds extend out from the center of storm. as it makes landfall 400 miles across. nearly doubling its size, a larger storm pushing more water, funneling that surge into the coast from fort myers up to tampa, sarasota as well, so the surge warnings right now are very, very dire, we're talking about 10 to 15 feet from tampa all the way down to sarasota, just to the south, 6 to 10 feet, naples, fort myers as well, and there's a storm surge on the other side as the system exits florida, we'll be watching these storm surges over the next 36 hours. we also got a risk for severe weather, a system to the right of the storm, severe weather, tornadoes are likelihood from daytona beach, fort myers, down

to miami. as far as the rainfall is concerned, we're looking at a flooding rainfall situation, a high risk of flash flooding for rivers and streams and streets from orlando, ocala, down to sarasota, we could be looking up to 18 inches of rain especially in north and north central florida, so as this system gets itself together, it's going to be a very thin line anywhere, depending on 15 miles either way from tampa that will determine where the heaviest storm surge is. >> to the south of where the storm actually crosses, right, is where we see the worst storm surge. >> exactly. >> al roker, thanks. appreciate it. our correspondents out in the storm zone right now, sam brock is in tampa, florida, dana griffin is in naples. chase cain is in orlando. >> it could take a direct hit from the hurricane, tampa, the

first time in a hundred years they have had a direct hit, are you seeing people take these calls to evacuate seriously? >> reporter: sure, 3-plus-million area in the metro. on yesterday jammed for miles. look at it today, many folks have evacuated already or don't have the ability to at this point and i say that because here's a gas station on the corner here near largo, lot of plastic bags covering pumps. signs on the pumps say please the cashier inside to use. they've shut down. folks here concerned about the safety. i had an interesting conversation with a woman as we talked about things going on the ground level, governor desantis talking about having 8,000 national guardsmen at the ready,

dump trucks moving these giant piles of debris that could be projectiles. she said after what happened during hurricane helene the mindset has completely reoriented and people are responding accordingly both government and local. take a listen to our conversation. >> this is better than the last storm we just had. i've never seen so much activity. and people are actually leaving. i did not see this with the one we just had, helene. but this one people are really leaving. >> reporter: kate, hospitals, we did get to advent health yesterday, they moved 40 to 50 patients from north pinellas.

tampa general hasn't had any evacuations yet. but we're paying close attention. >> barrier islands out there, lots of exposed areas, hopefully people are getting inland. thank you so much. dana, you're about 150 miles south of sam in naples, florida, you spoke to the mayor, what did she have to say? >> reporter: she said that mandatory evacuations started at 6:00 a.m., she hasn't seen the number of people evacuate she'd like, but there's still time to get out, but take a look behind me, this beach is now full of people, more than we saw yesterday, you'd think we'd see less people today. families showing up to the beach, a hurricane ark category 4 hurricane is about to barrel toward this state. we could get life-threatening storm surge here, some 6 to 10

feet, the biggest concern that the mayor reiterated today. they've evacuated the coastal residents and areas prone to storm surge. she wanted to give this stark reminder of how quickly storms can change and how people need to be ready to evacuate. listen. >> even with ian we weren't in the threat zone all of a sudden we were getting a direct hit. these storms are unpredictable. so don't think that it can't take a quick turn and we need to be prepared for that. >> reporter: we need to be prepared. i asked several people as you can see, more people are showing up, i've asked people are they leaving? i have heard no, i'm in a safe area, i heard a quote maybe. kate. >> i think our weather folks, meteorologists said, just err on the side of the caution. chase is somewhere a lot of

people are headed, orlando, the second major storm in two weeks, are people evacuating, we heard sam talking about people who are becoming wiser and knowing they feed to get out of the way, what are you experiencing in. >> reporter: there's a loft traffic on interstate 4, it thins out behind me in downtown orlando, but so many people are trying to leave tampa bay and gulf coast region. a lot of folks coming here, but no a lot of hotel rooms left. jacksonville, no hotel rooms left. family evacuated here from port charlotte, helene brought water within a few feet and with milton tai getting out of town. >> just very stressful to go through this. you start wondering, is it really worth it?

context of this reporting she had that to say and more. >> people were dying by the hundreds. everybody was scramling to get these kits. and this guy who was president of the united states is sending them to russia, to a murderous dictator for his personal use, that's just the most recent, stark example of who donald trump is. >> reporter: the vice president went on to describe mr. trump as dangerous, something we've heard her say before. we heard from sources close to the campaign that the vice president was going to sort of ramp-up her targeting of former president trump in public appearances and in advertising we're seeing from the campaign and the language you heard today seems to be consistent with that. >> aaron, this howard stern interview part of a bigger media blitz for vice president harris, what are some of the other key takeaways.

>> she was on the view today. her appearance on the view she announced a new plan called medicare at home, a plan where medicare would pay for the costs of in-home healthcare for senior citizens, that would be relief for folks who are caring for their children and elderly parents as well. >> garrett, what is the former president's campaign schedule look like for the rest of this week? today's events were postponed because of the hurricane. >> reporter: assuming the storm doesn't cause any more cancellations the former president will be back in pennsylvania, perhaps the most crucial battleground state tomorrow for two events, he's giving a speech to the economic club of detroit in friday.

involved when they showed up here around 5:00 this morning. they did call for a second alarm, which means extra backup to help fight this fire. there was an elderly man who lives inside the house. he was able to get out on his own. the assistant chief with the fire department tells us that the man actually smelled something burning before he went to bed. around 10:00 last night. went looking around the house. wasn't able to find the source of the smell. here's the chief describing what the biggest challenge was for him and his colleagues in putting this fire out. this is a tight area. you know, the houses we know are pretty close to each other. and obviously you have vegetation. we want to spend a lot of resources. it's not that big of a house, literally, but it's just you want to come in pretty heavy with equipment and personnel to be able to knock things down and reduce our life safety factors and everything. you know. so the main house, the green house, it did burn. obviously it is destroyed. there are two other homes on either side very close nearby, but the fire department was able to keep

the fire from spreading to those homes. those homes are fine and the people who live there did get out. okay, so no one was hurt in all of this. as far as the cause, they're going to have an investigator out here. the fact that the man did smell something burning around 10:00 last night means that there was probably something smoldering overnight before it ignited around 5:00 this morning. that is something they will obviously be looking into here in lafayette. bob redell, nbc, bay area news. thanks for the update, bob. well, we are finally dialing down the heat this week, but it's still going to be warm today before the much cooler weather arrives. here's meteorologist vianey arana. we've got a beautiful day in store, especially because it's not going to be as hot. but if you're in the interior, we've still got some warmth out there, so be mindful of that. we're going to expect to see around 12:00, 1:00 already in the 80s for some areas, including dublin, but then we're going to start to see some 90s through the interior. meanwhile, in san francisco and around the coastline, we're going to see some 60s, around half moon bay, san francisco, at around 72 by 3:00. and then our warmest spots

will be sacramento and through brentwood, tracy, because that high pressure is beginning to move east. so we are expecting to still continue to see some warmth. but by the overnight hours, things are going to cool off nicely. and that's going to make way for an even nicer wednesday ahead. i do want to remind folks that we still have this heat advisory in place for 7 p.m. for parts of the interior. after that, we are expected to cool off with rain chances into saturday. quite the change. thanks, vianey. today is the day a lot of san francisco families have been dreading. in a few hours from now, they're going to learn whether their neighborhood school is on the chopping block. as san francisco unified tries to manage its budget. right now, the district is in a $400 million budget hole. schools at all grade levels are facing closures possible mergers. superintendent matt wayne says the list of proposed schools will be released late this afternoon. we face a serious budget crisis that we need to address now in order to make sure that we are maintaining local control. right

now, the state has escalated its oversight and is watching us closely. and so the decisions we make in the coming months are going to mean the difference between the state recognizing we've made progress or feeling like it needs to intervene more. this thursday, the superintendent will hold a virtual town hall meeting to discuss the plan and to take questions from the public. then, in about a month, on november 12th, the school board could get the final recommendation list. the final vote is expected on december 10th. we have a reminder on one of the hottest races this november the 16th congressional district, currently held by longtime congresswoman anna eshoo, is retiring. so these two candidates are going head to head. former san jose mayor sam liccardo and state assemblyman evan low are competing for her seat, and they will face each other in a rescheduled debate this friday. it was rescheduled after liccardo was diagnosed with laryngitis. he is still

after an explosion in california on monday. the building was in the back of home in long beach. officials say a man was found in rubble and taken to the hospital. we don't know his condition just yet. investigators say the blast damaged multiple neighbor ing homes. a surprising shake-up in the nfl the new york jets fired head coach robert saleh just five days into the season, it comes amid reports that there might have been tensions between saleh and the team's star quarterback aaron rodgers. over his three years in charge, his record with the jets was 20 wins and 36 losses. the defensive coordinator will now take over as the team's interim head coach video from an australian train station shows a koala's adventure getting derailed by police, last week the animal climbed up and down the stairs, investigated the elevator for a while, walked around the train

platform and an alert was put out to nearby trains warning them to slow down, police had to go on a low-speed chase through the train station to help the koala get to safety, it climbed a fence and jumped out of the station. we're following more breaking news this hour and another blow to tiktok. more than a dozen states filed lawsuits against the popular social media app, claiming that it's harmful to children's mental health. the lawsuits mainly focus on accusations that the platform is designed to be addictive. tiktok is denying those allegations. nbc news justice correspondent ken dilanian is following this, 14 separate lawsuits were filed today by different states. >> reporter: kate the lawsuits take aim at the tiktok algorithm, tailoring content to

people's interests. lawsuits emphasize features that help make children addicted to the platform. data collected without parental con zest, push notifications and face filters that contain unattainable. trying to force tiktok's parent company to sell the app over national security concerns under a law that's being challenged in federal court. >> there's a lot going on with tiktok, are they saying anything more about these new lawsuits? >> reporter: yes, they're pushing back forcefully, a spokesperson said in statement to us, quote, we provide robust safeguards, have voluntary launched safety features such as a default screen time limits,
