we have hurricane warnings for much of the central part of florida. tropical storm watches, hurricane watches as well. this is the latest now. category 4 storm. 210 miles southwest of tampa, with 155 mile-per-hour winds. forward speed picks up a up. northeast 16 miles per hour. tornado watches until 9:00 tonight. stretching from tampa all the way down to miami and some tornado warnings also out there. so we're looking right now currently land fall somewhere around 2:00 a.m., as a category 4 storm, 135 -- 130 mile-per-hour winds. however what we're watching now is this line. if it takes this path, the wind pushes the water toward the coast. so now we're talking about more of a problem for ft. myers and to venice beach. the wind pushes the water away from st. petersburg and tampa. if it moves to the north, it's more of a problem for tampa/st. pete because the water will be pushed in by the winds. if it moves further to the north, it's more for ft. myers
7:09 am
and naples. we're going to be watching that. only takes about 10 to 15 miles either way to cause a different surge. 10 to 15 feet right now from sarasota to boca grand. st. petersburg and tampa 8 to 12 feet and 3 to 5 foot storm surge from melbourne up to daytona beach and jacksonville as milton moves out. as far as the impacts are concerned, what we're looking at, damaging, really dangerous winds. 111 miles per hour wind gusts for sarasota. windows get blown out. a lot of power outages. speaking of power outages, we're talking about extreme, widespread damage from sarasota to the east coast of florida. and these outages could last for weeks. and the flooding rain fall, a major problem. we're talking about rainfall amounts of up to 18 inches of rain. but could be even higher than that with life threatening and catastrophic flash flooding possible. we're talking anywhere from 8 to
7:10 am
12 inches generally in that central part. and as we mentioned earlier, tornadoes. the risk of tornadoes very strong, especially ef-2 pornds from engelwood to melbourne we're watching this very closely, guys. this is going to be a high-impact storm that we are talking about for weeks. >> and multiple levels, too. al, thank you. someone else, of course, is watching this closely, the mayor of tampa. madam mayor, thank you so much for being with us on a busy morning. you know, a couple days ago, you were as blunt as i think we've ever seen a public official be, saying stay in these evacuation zones and try to ride it out, they will die. is that still your message this morning? >> well, wherefore that storm surge comes, if it's 10 to 15 feet, and people are trying to ride this out in single story structures, there's no place to go. and once the winds get up to hurricane speed, there is nobody to come and get you, and, so,
7:11 am
you know, the point of being blunt was to get everyone's attention. this isn't a drill. this is the biggest storm that we have certainly seen here in the tampa bay area in over a century. >> and mayor, to compound things, high tide in tampa happens to be at 6:19, which is a terrible time for it. but there are people who either cannot leave, are too old, felt they waited too long. there is no gasoline. there are a lot of people who are kind of trapped in that bucket. what should they do if they are, in fact, in their homes. >> people aren't trapped. we are still -- our amazing law enforcement officers are going door to door. we have our social engagement personnel, especially for those individuals that only speak spanish. and, you know, encouraging them to come out. if it gets down to the point, you know, we can just bring them to a shelter. as far as the gas is concerned, i'm on port tampa bay's board,

and we service 17 counties. and our fuel reserves are full. they were full a day or two ago. and it's not a supply issue. it's that demand. so we're getting that gas out as quickly as we can. gas stations in my neighborhood were empty night before last. they're full now. so we're providing the fuel necessary. again, people don't have to go to another state. just go up to higher ground. it is the water that we have got to run from. and that is what is going to be most impactful. and as was said, 20 miles in one direction or the other will make all the difference. it goes 20 miles south of us, it will take that water out of our bay. so we don't wish anything on our neighbors, but, as al said, any wobble will make a significant difference for the gulf coast. >> finally, you are still
7:13 am
recovering from hurricane helene. significant flooding there. we know workers have been pulling all-nighters to get that debris secured. how concerned are you about that aspect? >> clearly very concerned about any debris that's left out. but i have to tell you, our tampa team is nothing short of amazing. we had some issues with contractors falling through, so we rolled up our sleeves, and we have got 70% to 75% of that household debris off of the street. something that would take three months in any other condition, we've gotten down in two weeks. so we've done all that we can, are continuing to pick it up until it is impossible to stay out on the streets any longer. >> mayor, it will be a long night. thank you for your time this morning. >> wish you the best of luck. >> we do. we will have updates on the hurricane throughout the morning.
