also looking at still the warnings up and down the florida coast, up towards parts of charleston, parts of georgia as well, where that flash flood threat could remain for today as those heavy rains just pound down on that part of the region. those gusty winds still at times bringing that dangerous surf and that storm surge, which could range today 3 to 5ft. so a situation worth watching. and as the sun rises, we just think of everybody in florida and those areas affected. i'll be back with a look at our local weather in just a few minutes. back to you guys. all right. we will check back with you. we do have team coverage of hurricane milton throughout the morning for you. then at 7:00, our today show crews are fanned out across florida with the reality of the storm's impact setting in with daylight. now here that is right after today in the bay happening today, three defendants charged in the shooting death of a security guard while protecting a tv news crew will argue for the change of venue. kevin died

5:18 am
the social security cola, by the way, is a good way of measuring your own cost of living. if your income is not rising as quickly as someone getting social security, you need a raise just so you're not being paid less. every year. speaking of expenses, whole foods, the amazon owned grocery store, will experiment in some locations with small warehouses so you can pick up your amazon purchase when you do your grocery shopping. i don't go to whole foods very often, not because i don't like it, but because they don't have the other things. you know, the laundry detergent, the. well they do. it's just that natural. yeah. the natural kind. trader joe's the same way. it's like you can't get toothpaste. yeah. you've got to plan your trips. you got to make two trips. yeah. you do. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, new this morning. a rare october comet will light up the sky today. and if you want to see it, now is your only chance. because it won't be back for 80,000 years. stargazers first

are really excited about this and you want to plan ahead, you can actually buy your tickets right now. yeah. universal is the distributor of the movie, which, like nbc, is owned by comcast. and we would also like to point out rock legend stevie nicks will be the musical guest on snl as it airs live on nbc bay area at 8:30 p.m. now, if you missed that or you just love it. so much you want to see it again, it will re-air at 1130. all right, very cool stuff to look forward this weekend. and maybe cooler temperatures too. yeah, i think we'll start to get into more of a finally pumpkin spice season, a little bit more of those, you know, seasonable kind of activities. yeah. it's going to move right into christmas. not too fast. laura. good morning everyone. we are starting off with a chillier note south city, 58 degrees low 50s up there in santa rosa. so 50s and 60s, but some clear skies to start our thursday around the bay. as we go throughout the day, though, it
5:21 am
could turn a little bit different. give you more of that fall feel as we go on into the noon hour. you might notice some more high clouds pushing at times and temperatures warming a little bit more gradually. then definitely the last couple of days in that heat wave. we'll get into some 60s and 70s for our lunchtime hour. a bit breezy at times, but overall comfortable for you to enjoy that lunch time outdoors. as we go on into the afternoon, a mix of sun and clouds and our temperatures only in the low 80s in spots like san rafael over towards concord 82, as well as down in morgan hill 79, downtown san jose. and we'll see those temperatures around the bay shore cool to those 60s. and 70s for hayward into the afternoon. we've been talking about this and kind of starting to put the models into agreement. a little bit as we get on into the weekend. i think lots of people will enjoy finally sleeping in with some cozier weather. as we take a look at our models starting to paint some rain chances as we go on into late friday saturday. the best bet here would be mainly up towards

the north bay and the north coast, but amounts vary. tracey but i think overall it will just be different to kind of feel a different pattern and potentially wash out just some of that heat and all of those lingering impacts. so we'll go like this over the next couple of days. low 80s will carry us through this week. dip down those temperatures as we go on into the weekend and track those spotty showers here on today in the bay, and then continue with a similar trend onto next week and maybe see what holds for wednesday as those models are starting to ramp up in the rain department. we'll see there san francisco should stay 60s as we wrap up this weekend. get ready for the big show, mike. the bay bridge moving smoothly at this hour? it is. we got a great view of the bay bridge right now. of course, no air show is going on and we'll continue to watch what you say. for cynthia, those updates as we have fleet week continuing in san francisco. a nice drive across the span itself. no build here, but there is that little build, traditional right on time for highway 37. look behind me. we've had since early this

morning a little slowing toward bailey. it looks like things loosened up,ermay have been one remaining crew that we didn't know about. no caltrans grid entries there. a smooth flow though, through contra costa county and over toward the bay bridge northbound 680 all lanes reopened, a little slowing past that crew. amber now we'll watch for that for clearing. but again, all northbound lanes are clear and the southbound commute works well. a smooth drive down vasco road out of contra costa county at your minimum for the day. back to you. thanks, mike. ahead on today in the bay new breakthroughs in beating back chemotherapy's impact for women who've won their battle against breast cancer. but first, a reminder for you. the 49ers take on seattle tonight in a thursday night football game. but our nbc sports bay area team will get you ready. make sure you join them for complete game day coverage starting at 4 p.m, then come back to nbc sports bay area for coverage after the game. you're watching today in the bay right now. we'll b

5:32 am
video. this is from last night in minnesota. this is about 30 miles south of where that storm made landfall. and you can see right there those powerful waves there pounding a huge stretch of the gulf coast. now, the storm surge is still a concern across florida's coastline. video from a restaurant security camera shows why it's just submerged under several feet of water. some 11 million people still at risk of flooding from flash flood and rising river levels. and check this out. the storm so powerful it actually ripped off part of this roof. this is a tropicana field, home of the tampa bay rays. there are no reports of any injuries there. and here's a live look at smyrna beach on florida's east coast. milton still carried ferocious power by the time it reaches side of florida. here's reporter julia bagg from our south florida affiliate with a look at the damage near tampa. i'm julia bagg in hillsborough county, florida, and the water that is
5:33 am
blocking some of these neighborhoods is causing problems when it comes to trying to repair the electricity. so many families in the dark in the tampa bay area and getting power back to them is going to take a while, and i'll show you why. take a look at these headlights behind me here this morning. around a dozen or so utility trucks, these are linemen here trying to make their way, their way to areas like clearwater, hard hit areas, saint pete beach around there. and they cannot get there from here because of the water. even in the dark, you can see some of it here and where they are. hillsborough county sheriff's deputies are blocking the way because it's not safe for them to continue what they're doing now is trying to figure out another route to get to where they're needed. just on the other side of the road here, it looks like a current is pushing this water. there's so much of it. so
5:34 am
deputies not letting anyone pass by here right now. we just spoke to some people who were who actually evacuated from their house and were trying to make it over here themselves to check on their home, but the water just got in the way. and so, across the state of florida, more than 3 million families without power right now and unclear just how long they will be stuck in the dark and the sheriff here in hillsborough county telling people to stay home and for good reason. i mean, look how dark it is here. you can see some lights on over there, but so many places without power and just simply pitch black and so the utility crews right now, just having a hard time getting to where they're needed right now, they are stuck right here. i'll show you one more time at this intersection. just trying to figure out how they can make it to where they are needed this morning. i'm julia bagg in hillsborough county, florida. we'll send it back to you. well, we've got so much up against
5:35 am
him. absolutely. okay, so the thing about that storm, it seemed like it was a pretty quick moving storm, but still dumping a lot of water in that area. still dumping a lot of water. and we think back colleen only about 13 days ago. so these people just got punch after punch and all of that water, all of those, you know, dangerous events that just went on in a short amount of time. right now, it is starting to push on east northeast. it's a category one storm, still dumping a lot of rain and bringing a lot of warnings, as we can see highlighted here. with those pinks and those orange hurricane warnings just extending through parts of orlando, daytona beach as this storm starts to make its exit now, it will start to push on through into the atlantic. as we go on into the later hours of this morning and eventually later on this afternoon. but still, some threats remain there for parts of florida, even up towards parts of southern georgia and south carolina, we could see some flash flooding possible, and the risk for people to see those really strong wind gusts just towering
5:36 am
those power lines. something to watch as the morning goes on. we could still see the potential for this side of florida to get that storm surge of about 3 to 5ft. so continue thinking of those people there, and reach out to your family and friends to see if they are okay. now, as far as our local weather, we are looking at things trending a little bit more cooler for today. you might also notice some high clouds at times. not too much change for tomorrow, but for the weekend we could be tracking a little bit of some rain chances. we'll talk about who gets the best chance and how long that will stick around. but mike, you're starting with a look at dublin. how's it going? it looks great right now. not to jinx anything folks, but we're looking at a smooth drive with just a subtle build steady build out of the altamont pass. this is approaching the dublin interchange with these headlights traveling westbound, seeing no slowing. sensors still have slowing sensors north 680 right around bernal and also coming up past koopman and castlewood. earlier overnight, crews registered as cleared on the caltrans grid, but we still see some slowing. they might have cleared the roadway, might not have cleared the area. we'll track that so far. that's north

governor and the state to step in. now, here's some video that we want to show you from the board of supervisors meeting here in san mateo county. they voted 4 to 0 to adopt a resolution calling for a state of emergency. this is supervisor ray mueller, who represents district three of san mateo county. at that meeting, he talked about how his constituents, some of whom live in unincorporated areas, are impacted by the cancellation of insurance policies or the sky high change of rates. so at this point, it's not exaggeration to say the state is facing an insurance crisis of both affordability and availability, as it affects those in rural, forested parts of the state. the hardest, all in response to increasing wildfires and natural disasters in san mateo county. we've i see this in my district in skyline, in the unincorporated skyline. kings mountain, petrolia heights, la honda, la mama. i see it in woodside, i see it in portola valley. i see it in pacifica. i
5:39 am
see it throughout my district. people are coming and they're having their insurance canceled on them, or they're having their rates go sky high and it is an incredible problem. there's so many places there in san mateo county that he named off. now, if policy owners are not able to continue with coverage through private insurers, they have the option of getting coverage through california's fair plan, which is said to be a last ditch effort when it comes to coverage. but as supervisor mueller puts it, their rates double or even triple, while the coverage is not the same. now, the mercury news reporting as well, that state farm is projecting dropping 1 million policies in the state over the next five years. and laura, this isn't just hit home for homeowners and business owners. it could have a ripple effect on the housing market as well as maybe then consequences for affordable housing here in the bay area, which we know so many people are already struggling to make it in the bay. laura. very

much so. all right. thank you, ginger, for the latest. there. 539 for you want to give you a live look at the oakland coliseum this morning because later today, council members may get some answers on the mayor's deal to sell the property leaders this morning. they're holding a meeting addressing the city's contingency budget as it relates to the proceeds from the coliseum sale. so critics are concerned about the timeline of the upcoming payments, which could potentially leave the city in financial straits if that money is not received. now, we did speak with the mayor yesterday, mayor sheng thao, last night, and she says that there is a new deal in place and that means that there is more money arriving sooner with a large payment on the back end due next may. approaching $100 million. now with the updated version of the amendment, we're going to see $47 million more within this fiscal year. i want to be very clear that this sale of the coliseum was a creative idea by my administration. it is not the silver bullet to actually solve all of our budget issues. it never was. so, so
5:41 am
far, the city has received just $15 million in its deal with the african american sports and entertainment group. the police union is among those voicing concerns. unmet payments may impact staffing levels, which would then impact public safety. looking at the san francisco skyline, you can be sure many people in the city will have their eyes pointed skyward. starting in the early afternoon today, listening for what may be a familiar roar. we're talking about the roar of jet engines, because at some point this afternoon, the blue angels are expected to run their first practice session as part of this weekend's fleet week festivities. the angels, of course, will be the centerpiece of the air show starting tomorrow. they commonly fly at about 3 p.m, but there's no specific announced time. i remember living in the city. it was always so much fun this week. let's check in with forecaster cinthia pimentel. she's got our weekend weather outlook. and will the skies be cooperating? that is yet to be seen. and even if you can't see them like you were saying, you
5:42 am
hear that roar. and it just makes people get up from their desk in the city and go peek outside. so let's take a look at what today holds in san francisco. we are looking at a little bit of a cooling trend kicking off for today. so you'll notice at times the skies will be partly cloudy. temperatures will feel much cooler there in the city in those upper 60s for the afternoon. if you can't get there today and you're getting there for the weekend, that's all right. tomorrow looks fine. we'll track some mix of sun and clouds there, but saturday could be a little bit of a different story. as we look at another weather pattern, there that could drop in even a chance of some drizzle there in the city. now for sunday, i think the big show we should see. skies starting to clear out just a little bit more, and temperatures just spectacular there for the city. there's lots going on for tonight, the weekend. so let's get started with the home opener here for the sharks tonight. they are kicking off at 730. and the temperatures in san jose are going to be pretty mild. so just you know where the light layers

anything to keep yourself comfortable throughout the game. if you're going to follow the 49ers up into seattle it's definitely going to be much cooler there in the 50s there for kickoff and some light winds. but go niners as we take a look at thursday night football. now mike you're tracking a build up at the bay bridge. what's going on. you know what you do. your forecast i did mine and we forecasted the buildup happening. as it is right now the metering lights are on. it's a pretty typical thursday. that's good stuff. on the approach as we look at your maps we may have a roadway hazard. this is over in richmond. i don't know which direction of the east shore freeway chp is yet to give me that report. we'll track that. there's the build on the incline for the bay bridge highway 37 highway four holding steady with more build through concord and more slowing into 242 now. 242 slows down in toward walnut creek, which is not a problem at the interchange. a smooth drive as we look ahead to what may be going on eastbound highway 37 that's out of novato and heading up on highway 37 between 100 and 1 and atherton avenue. you'll have one lane blocked overnight. next week, we're going to have
5:44 am
both lanes blocked, and then you're going to have to go up and take that roundabout over atherton. if you're getting over toward vallejo from novato. but again, that's overnight. and tonight it will remain open with just one lane closed. the rest of the bay moves very smoothly. typical over here to the south bay, with northbound 101 showing the slowdown through around oakland road. i'll give you a look at tonight around the peninsula as well. highway 92 that's between ralston and el camino or alameda de las pulgas. you will have landscaping work going on tonight as well as during the daylight hours. for many days. next week they're going to take care of the center divide likely. so watch for crews and slow. when you see those lights. it will be overnight again tonight and then next week during the day. and then tonight, as we're talking about cynthia mentioned the home opener for sharks. so watch for crews traveling back and forth between the parking lots and sap center. and also at the outdoor festival. back to you. thanks, mike. well, back in court, but with a twist. ahead on today in the bay. the new developments for rap mogul sean diddy combs in his federal criminal case. why? today's hearing will

have jim sparaco here from the sharks. this morning to talk about that. thanks so much for getting up early. i know it's going to be a really long night for you as you kick off tonight. yeah, but we're definitely excited to be back playing hockey here at sap center. you know, we're really calling this our opening weekend because the games not only tonight but also on saturday is our last night. but tonight the festivities kind of will start at 4:00. we do a free street rally outside the building on barack obama boulevard. we'll have food trucks. we'll have the sharks foundation selling beer, with proceeds benefiting the sharks foundation. we'll have a dj and then, of course, when our players arrive, we're going to be doing a teal carpet entrance for them. so kind of like a red carpet entry at the at the american music awards or whatever. that's so cool. but it's teal. yes, it's going to be a teal carpet. and our players will arrive. they'll be signing autographs for fans. they'll be saying hello to them on their way into the building before we start the game tonight. that is super cool. so we know that the ice went in and it will stay in
5:53 am
all the way up until the playoffs. hopefully we make the playoffs this year. fun fact for you guys at home, the ice stays in even if you come to see something else. so if you're coming for a concert or whatever the ice is still there, which i always think is super cool. another thing that's super cool this season, macklin celebrini i know a lot of people have been looking forward to his formal debut. yeah, so this off season we had the number one overall selection in the nhl entry draft. we chose macklin celebrini, who does have ties to the bay area. he did actually live here for a little while and played in the junior sharks program, so it's a bit of a homecoming for him. and it's going to be historic because it's going to be his first game in the nhl of what we hope will be a long and a career filled with a lot of goal scoring. and then we also have our first round pick from last year, will smith, who's also going to be making his nhl debut. so a couple of young players, a couple of cornerstone players for the team that are going to be making their nhl debut tonight. so that's exciting and we're excited to see that the future of the sharks is now. all
