6:00 am
right now at 6:00, people in florida are waking up to the destruction left behind by hurricane milton. in some cases, teams can't even begin to tackle the massive power outages. our team tracking the storm's path and the local assistance now headed there. new legal action. a former school superintendent now filing suit. this is after being fired without cause. the first details on her claim of wrongful termination. plus, a pivotal town hall in san francisco. district leaders set to explain why some schools are
6:01 am
now slated to close. the new backlash in the one city leader already planning to voice his concerns. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning, 6:00, right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington, right to our breaking news this morning, hurricane milton. now moving away from florida's eastern coast into the atlantic. but it left a destructive path in its wake. now, more than 3 million people this morning without power. and authorities are confirming the first storm related deaths. milton making landfall as a category three storm. this is in siesta key. this is near sarasota. this video from about 75 miles north of there along the gulf coast. and you can see the ferocious winds and that rain battering the area. now, the center of that storm eventually passed near orlando before pushing out to the sea again this morning. authorities in saint lucie county confirming four deaths along the treasure coast from a
6:02 am
tornado spawned by the hurricane. this is brand new video from what first responders saw at the scene. in addition, crews say about 100 homes there are heavily damaged and we have nearby video from wellington, where the storm damaged homes and uprooted trees. even before milton made landfall, in some cases, roads are set to be washed away. governor ron desantis just gave an update within the last 30 minutes, he says. at least rescue teams have saved at least 48 people. but he has a warning. as people wake up today, as you survey damage and clean up, please be cautious of hazards. we have post-storm fatalities, almost every storm, and a lot of these fatalities are avoidable. these are new images from noaa showing the powerful surf. huge waves in the gulf ahead of hurricane milton's landfall in florida. milton was the third fastest intensifying storm on record, according to
6:03 am
the u.s. national hurricane center. now, here is a live look this morning at saint petersburg. this is not far from where milton made landfall, and while that storm is gone, the threat is still there. some 11 million people are still at risk of flooding and flash floods, as well as rising river levels. now forecaster cinthia pimentel. she has been tracking the storm's path. we want to begin with our team coverage with today in the bay s bob redell and bob. i know there is more help coming from the bay area to help those in the impacted areas. correct. and we are also learning that not only hurricane arlene, but now hurricane milton is putting a strain on the resources of the american red cross. our sister station in sacramento, kcra, is reporting that as a result, the california gold coast american red cross, which represents sac and surrounding counties, is asking the public to step up and volunteer. the red cross says they need more volunteers who can help with tasks like logistics, mental health or shelters because we know that
6:04 am
they've sent people to the gulf coast of florida. we also know that the american red cross, northern california coastal region, which represents our area, has already deployed almost 70 people here from the bay area to the southeastern part of the united states. again, not only for milton, but for helene, which was about a week and a half. two weeks ago. so we wouldn't be surprised if our red cross here in the bay area is looking for help. as well. governor newsom is sending more first responders from orange county and menlo park to florida saying, quote, in times of crisis, americans unite to lend a helping hand. nearly 40 members of a menlo based fema task force left for florida on sunday. another 40 either deployed yesterday or will be later today. there's also a handful of first responders from oakland based task force four who are staging already in orlando. they traveled straight from north carolina, where they were helping people affected by hurricane helene. california has sent more than 350 personnel for these hurricane responses. they've already had hurricane
6:05 am
damage that you can see when you drive through the state. and additionally, that means that all of the ground is already saturated. so there's nowhere for more water to go. also on the way, two ambulances with paramedics and emts from alameda county reporting live here in the east bay. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you for sending help. now let's check in with forecaster cinthia pimentel. she's tracking milton's path now this morning. this morning. it continues to push on east. it just barreled through florida so quickly, as quickly as it intensified and just brought all of that damage. right now it is moving towards the east, and it is still a category one storm. and we are looking at all of those returns of the rainfall here and all of those hurricane warnings and just dangerous situations continuing for parts of orlando, daytona beach and up into parts of charleston even. but this storm will continue to move on towards the atlantic as we go on into the afternoon and to the
6:06 am
later hours. but that threat still remains of that flash flooding. the debris that people are going to have to clear up. and not only from this storm, but also from helene, which was just 13 days ago. so overall, milton will go down into the history books as that fast intensifying storm late into hurricane season, which is technically over in november, but we will see. back to you guys. thank you very much. and we will have team coverage of hurricane milton throughout the morning. then at 7:00, our today show crews are fanned out across california with daylight now arriving in the reality of the storm's impact setting in. that's right. after today in the bay. 605 this morning, happening today, three defendants charged in the shooting death of a security guard killed while protecting a tv news crew will argue for a change of venue. kevin died nearly three years ago in oakland. this was during what investigators say was an attempted robbery. cardenas mitchell, herschel hale and lauren gilbert all pleaded not guilty this past summer. if
6:07 am
convicted on all charges, they could all face life in prison. new developments this morning in the south bay. santa clara county schools recently terminated superintendent is now reportedly taking legal action. according to the mercury news, mary ann dewan is now suing the county board of education, claiming no good reason exists for her abrupt firing without cause. board members ousted her last week after a closed door hearing, and it came in the wake of stories filed this summer by nbc bay area's investigative unit detailing allegations of misuse of head start funds, mishandling of worker complaints and claims of retaliation. dewan has not issued a public comment on the investigation, which is still ongoing. she also did not respond to our request for comment or request from the mercury news. her supporters still claim the board is not being transparent in its decision. later today in san francisco, school district will hold its first town hall. this is addressing the planned closure or merger of 13 public
6:08 am
schools, so the district released its list yesterday. today, the superintendent is holding a budget town hall. this is where those proposed closures will take center stage. now critics are already raising some concerns here. supervisor president aaron peskin is leading one news conference today questioning what some argue is the disproportionate impact on some communities. final recommendations will be made november 12th. the final vote is scheduled for december 10th. turning now to decision 2024 republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance heads to north carolina today following a brief stop in the bay area yesterday. he attended a fundraiser in woodside before the event. supporters lined woodside road to welcome him. tickets reportedly range from 3300 to $50,000. it marks his second bay area visit since july, when he attended a palo alto fundraiser hosted by the co-founder of crypto company bitgo. democratic presidential nominee kamala harris, scheduled to take part
6:09 am
in a town hall event later today for latino voters. that event is being held in las vegas. following that, she'll head to arizona for a campaign rally. nevada and arizona are, of course, both critical swing states in the race for president. new overnight. one of the living legends in tennis is making it official. rafael nadal retiring. rafa, as he's more commonly known, made that announcement on social media. he, along with roger federer and novak djokovic, actually are considered the big three who have absolutely dominated tennis, men's tennis, that is for the better part of two decades. rafa, just 38 years old, and he says that recent injuries are too just much to bear. he retires as a 22 time grand slam winner, including an astounding 14 french open title. well, heads up if you are traveling to the north bay today, because you may notice some smoke in the area, you don't have to call 911. this is going to be because of a prescribed burn. it's scheduled
6:10 am
to take place in mount tamalpais state park in marin county. prescribed burns are aimed, of course, to reduce the fire danger out there. firefighters are planning to begin that burn about 10:00 this morning. cinthia pimentel is tracking some of the conditions for crews on the ground this morning. definitely much cooler. i mean, imagine if they would have done that last week and that heat wave they really have to take into consideration what the weather will do. and for today, we are looking at a cooler trend. let's stay up in there in the north bay and see some of our highs for today. we will see some clouds at times and temperatures coming back down into a more seasonable spot. santa rosa, we've got you at 80 degrees. tiburon 66. we'll do a little bit warmer up there in yountville at 84 and benicia 77 degrees for today. so you'll notice that we'll see clouds at times. definitely a much more gloomy fall feeling as we go on into the afternoon. our inland highs only in the 80s. we'll keep it 60s and 70s. bayshore. and in a few minutes we'll talk about the chance of some weekend rain. but for now, mike is helping you get around with some
6:11 am
cheaper gas prices, trying to give you a chance, a little bit better prices, the best in the bay continues to be in contra costa county. it's 385 today at valero in concord on willow pass road. that's our top number here. a lower low for the south bay today. it's 405 at cupertino car wash on north deanza boulevard in the middle. and the same best price is in marin county's mill valley 405, also at arco on redwood highway. the bottom number here and here, gasbuddy.com is where you can report or retrieve those prices around you on the roadways. we're looking at what's going on around the bay, starting to build the traffic through the east bay where we continue this crash south 880 at tennyson. the good news no major injuries. we do have all lanes cleared. the activity on the shoulder is a distraction. and the build out of hayward and in toward fremont and the rest of the bill for the east bay, mostly contra costa county that crash on highway four, though it's opposite your main commute. so your commute just building because of the volume back to you. thank you so much, mike. 611 for you this morning, a highly anticipated announcement expected from tesla. today, the company
6:12 am
appears poised to make a run for waymo. this is ahead for you this morning on today in the bay. we're going to talk about the speculation hitting overdrive on a possible new robotaxi prototype and amazon making changes to some of its whole food stores. let's go out to the futures this morning, see what's ahead for us. it's been kind of a quiet week that looks like that will continue. and a rare sight in the sky tonight. the chances of catching a glimpse of the aurora borealis. you're watching today in the ba.

6:15 am
are over on in discovery bay. a bit of a cooler morning starting off in the 60s. we'll see more clouds throughout the day, so you'll feel a little bit of a cooler pattern. much more comfortable as we go on into mid-october. temperatures will top off in the upper seconds. there are some other changes coming ahead for the weekend in the form of some spotty rain. we'll talk about who gets it when. and a typical slower pattern right here. richmond bridge heading over toward san rafael, westbound at the toll plaza, shows the backup for 580 as folks come off the east shore freeway, slowing for westbound 80 as well. we'll show you the bigger build coming up. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. we get key inflation today. more about that
6:16 am
in a second. oil prices edging higher on hurricane worries but actually not bad nvidia shares are up 25% over the last month. even though they fell a quarter yesterday on ai hopes and a big day for tesla. elon musk will unveil tesla's robotaxis today. or at least he says he will. musk has been promising robo taxis for years. some years ago, he promised there would be a million tesla robo taxis on the road by year 2020. and of course, it's 2024 and there are none. the big announcement scheduled for today was originally scheduled for earlier this summer, but it was canceled. we're not sure why. so everybody is going into today's event with a healthy grain of salt. based on tesla's past promises. there are, of course, already robo taxis on the road operated by google's waymo, but they drive in a limited area over known routes and use lidar to navigate. tesla's not equipped with lidar only traditional cameras. there's
6:17 am
some concern teslas and other electric cars could catch fire. in florida, seawater can set off fires in lithium ion ion batteries. one of the cars that caught fire during hurricane helene was an electric car. it burned down a house. a local fire marshal called them a ticking time bomb. okay, as for those inflation numbers, we get the monthly consumer price index inflation lower than it was pretty close to the fed's 2% target. that, and concerns over employment convinced the fed to lower interest rates last month. we'll also get the social security cola soon. that's the cost of living adjustment that will be smaller than in the pas, because inflation has been lower than in the past. the social security cola, by the way, good way of measuring your own cost of living. if your income is not rising as quickly as someone who's getting social security, you need a raise because you're getting paid less every year. speaking of expenses, whole foods, the amazon grocery store, will experiment with small
6:18 am
warehouses in some locations so you can pick up your amazon purchase. when you do your grocery shopping. as you know, you can already return things from amazon to your whole foods, but now you'll be able to get some things as well. but i like to go home and see those boxes. aren't they fun? you get. i get so many i forget what it is i've even like i'm opening it. i wonder what this is. oh, it's a spatula. it's like christmas every day at the house. yeah, or when you go home and you like, i know a box was here. now it's. oh, no, it's happened to me. sorry. thanks, guys. you bet. all right. 617 for you this morning and trending for you fans. can't wait for pop star ariana grande hosting a new episode of snl this weekend. and you know what? she has one small request from the cast. guys, i'm so excited to be hosting this week. but before we start, i just want to say i would really prefer to not do anything wicked or wizard of oz related. may we
6:19 am
come back in one hour? sure. i could so see us doing that completely. okay, so the big question is, will her request be granted? i don't know about that, but you know what? this all comes because next month, thanksgiving weekend, it's going to be the opening of our film wicked, which she starred in, of course. and if you really, really, really want to plan ahead, you know what? you can actually get your tickets right now. yeah, they're already on sale. universal is the distributor here, which, like nbc, is owned by comcast. we also want to point out rock legend stevie nicks will be the musical guest on that episode of snl. it's going to air right here on nbc. bay area at 8:30 p.m. if you do miss it, don't worry about it. you want to see it again. we'll check it out at 1130 because going to re-air there, get your laughs on. also trending for you. this morning. bay area stargazers may get a rare chance to view the northern

lights. yes, this is all due to an extremely intense solar storm. experts say the peak potential will be tonight into tomorrow. something similar happened in the bay area back in may, but it was hard to view with the naked eye. we asked one photographer about tips on how to get the best picture. he says to put your camera or phone on a tripod or stable spot, and to lengthen your exposure settings to anywhere from ten to 20s be careful not to move your camera, or else you're going to get a blurry shot. you also want to move into more of the upper elevations to get, you know, away from the fog that we get in the morning and the light pollution and, you know, good luck. that one in may was a much more intense event, this one a little bit less, but still, if anybody gets some cool shots, be sure to share them with us. we'd love to see them. yes, please. so a little bit about the auroras. of course the sun is emitting those charged particles and they start to get into the
6:21 am
pattern here of the earth's magnetic fields. now, where it's weaker is right at our earth's pole. they interact and they start to bring about some changes to our night sky viewin. now, depending on where those molecules hit with the high and of course, the other elements going on into our upper atmosphere, that's when we get a little bit of those different colors. so good luck with the stargazing later on tonight. and tomorrow. now as far back to you down here on earth, we are starting the morning off with a little bit more of that sweater weather feel for you, and it could continue into this afternoon as well as we look at more increasing cloud cover. definitely changing the pattern up from that heat wave that lasted way too long into our afternoon. we are looking at our highs, sticking with the 60s and 70s bay shore. i've got you at 68, san mateo 73, right across in hayward to our inland valleys. only looking at those low 80s for napa up there in day, as well as down in morgan hill. now for the weekend, of course. everybody loves the sound of the weekend. how about
6:22 am
a nice, comforting start to it as we take a look at the chance of seeing some rain here early on? on saturday? it could be very light, mainly for parts of the northern coast and the potential of it trickling down into parts of the north bay. so a much welcomed pattern change as we take a look over the next couple of days here in our inland valleys, low 80s will carry us through the week. we'll dip it down a little bit for saturday, and continue to see the chance of some spotty showers, even into next week. we'll take a look at that as the day progresses. now, mike, there is your eye on the bay bridge span. what's going on? you know, i was watching here the incline and it was very slow for a couple of minutes. i think they may have slowed down the metering lights to keep the bridge traffic moving smoothly. in case there are issues. there are not any, but that's the idea behind the metering lights. you hold the traffic back over and land where they can get help if they need it, and you keep that bridge moving smoothly in case they need to get help out there. they do not a smoother, slower drive toward the richmond bridge. same thing for your typical east bay. slowing
6:23 am
northbound 680 still has a little break up around now. the crashes over on 880 are to the shoulder. back to you. thank you mike. well ahead for you here on today in the bay. new breakthroughs in beating back chemotherapy's impact. this is for women who've won their battle against breast cancer. and a reminder, the 49ers will look for a win as they take on the seattle seahawks tonight in week six of the nfl season. john carlos ramirez and ron brooks and former niners safety donte whitner for a complete game day coverage. it starts at 4 p.m. and continues immediately after the game on nbc sports bay area. go niners! we'll be rightack b

the city hall insiders spend record high budgets. but our problems get worse. they say this is the best that we can do. they blame the system, but they built the system. i have a plan to change it. with accountability and rooting out corruption, we can tackle our housing and drug crisis, clear the tent encampments and bring our businesses back. are you ready to stop settling and start demanding more? join me in changing city hall.

survivors. october marks both breast cancer and menopause awareness month. experts point out breast cancer survivors often encounter menopausal symptoms sooner, commonly the result of difficult chemotherapy treatments. more than 4 million americans are breast cancer survivors. 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer that amounts to 250,000 women per year. one los altos based virtual care clinic called middy health focuses on women over 40. they say the effects from chemotherapy often lead to early onset menopausal symptoms that can still be treated effectively. menopausal hormone therapy is the most effective treatment, but there
6:27 am
are many, many others that have been looked at and can be found to be very effective to treat for treating of things like hot flashes and night sweats and sleep difficulties. the chief officer there says patients age can often determine whether side effects will be temporary or worse. but the most important thing is to talk with an expert. 626 for you this morning, we've got a lot more ahead for you at 630, including assessing the damage from hurricane milton daylight, providing the first look at some of that damage. we're going to have the latest from where that storm made landfall. i'm ginger conejero saab. san mateo county joins others across the state. other counties across the state in demanding for immediate action from governor gavin newsom and other state leaders to address the insurance coverage crisis. will this affect your coverage? keep it here. you're

massive storm surge. in the first news emerging about storm related casualties. also, new calls for a state of emergency. we are live this morning with a request to governor newsom from leaders in one county to help ease california's home insurance crisis. and get ready the san jose sharks, kicking off the new season tonight with a new face of the franchise. we'll take you
6:31 am
out to the shark tank for a first look at what's driving so much fan excitement. this is today in the bay. a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington getting right to that breaking news this morning, hurricane milton. well, it made landfall last night along florida's gulf coast as a category three storm, bringing powerful winds, deadly storm surge and flooding across the state. more than 3 million people still without power this morning. and the tornadoes are already to blame for at least four deaths. i want to show you some video. this is from last night. this is from minnesota, about 30 miles south of where the storm made landfall. and you can see right here the powerful waves, which pounded a huge stretch of the gulf coast. there, nearly 50 rescues are now being reported across florida, 15 alone, happening in the tampa bay area. new video to show you of one rescue last night after a tree fell on top of a hotel,
6:32 am
first responders rushed in to help some of the people that were trapped in the damage and as daylight breaks, you can see flooded roads making it very difficult to navigate. this is a video from hillsborough county from deputies near tampa, roads were inundated with water. here's reporter julia bagg from one of our florida affiliates with a closer look at the damag. i'm julia bagg in hillsborough county, florida, and the water that is blocking some of these neighborhoods is causing problems when it comes to trying to repair the electricity. so many families in the dark in the tampa bay area and getting power back to them is going to take a while, and i'll show you why. take a look at these headlights behind me here this morning around a dozen or so utility trucks. these are linemen here trying to make their way. their way to areas like clearwater. hard hit areas, saint pete beach
6:33 am
around there and they cannot get there from here because of the water. even in the dark. you can see some of it here. and where they are. hillsborough county sheriff's deputies are blocking the way because it's not safe for them to continue. what they're doing now is trying to figure out another route to get to where they're needed. just on the other side of the road here, it looks like a current is pushing this water. there's so much of it. so deputies not letting anyone pass by here right now. we just spoke to some people who were who actually evacuated from their house and were trying to make it over here themselves to check on their home, but the water just got in the way. and so across the state of florida, more than 3 million families are without power right now. and unclear just how long they will be stuck in the dark and the sheriff here in hillsborough county telling people to stay home and for good
6:34 am
reason. i mean, look how dark it is here. you can see some lights on over there, but so many places without power and just simply pitch black. and so the utility crews, right now, just having a hard time getting to where they're needed right now, they are stuck right here. i'll show you one more time at this intersection. just trying to figure out how they can make it to where they are needed this morning. i'm julia bagg in hillsborough county, florida. we'll send it back to you. thank you, julia, so much being uncovered as the sun comes up. look. and we're also learning more about that storm. i mean, certainly powerful. it really caused a lot of confusion with a lot of meteorologists because they're trying to figure out it's going up and down. i mean, just a lot. i know any kind of wobble in the path definitely put people on high alert, but those impacts were felt throughout the state of florida, and we're starting to gather a little bit more data on what happened with milton in the last 24 hours. now, sarasota, we still need to look at some of those verifications, but they could have possibly seen around
6:35 am
ten feet of that storm surge. just the crazy winds pushing up all of that water. something else that needs to be verified. but we are looking at that range of more than 125 tornado warnings issued there throughout florida, which could be the most that they ever recorded for a single day. almost 20in of rain in saint petersburg yesterday, and we are also looking at that threat remaining for today with some really gusty winds throughout the eastern coast. as the storm barrels into the atlantic, and eventually dies off. we'll take a look at that throughout the morning. and of course, our local weather in just a few minutes. back to you. thank you very much, cynthia. 6.34 right now developing this morning, peninsula leaders are demanding action from governor newsom. they want him to declare a state of emergency over california's growing home insurance crisis. today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live in san mateo county this morning. leaders there, i understand, are actually trying to follow some of the steps that are being taken in some other counties. that's correct. good
6:36 am
morning. laura. shasta, placer and san bernardino counties have already asked for the governor to take more immediate action when it comes to this insurance coverage crisis. earlier this week, san mateo county has joined those calls, asking for the governor to declare a state of emergency. now, at the board of supervisors meeting earlier this week, the board voted 4 to 0 to adopt a resolution calling for a state of emergency. supervisor ray mueller, who represents district three of san mateo county, said he's leading these efforts because his constituents, some of whom live in unincorporated areas, are impacted by the cancellation of insurance policies or the sky high changes of rates. so at this point, it's not exaggeration to say the state is facing an insurance crisis of both affordability and availability, as it affects those in rural, forested parts of the state. the hardest all in
6:37 am
response to increasing wildfires and natural disasters in san mateo county. we've i see this in my district in skyline, on the unincorporated skyline, kings mountain, petrolia heights, la honda, la mama. i see it in woodside, i see it in portola valley. i see it in pacifica. i see it throughout my district. people are coming and they're having their insurance canceled on them, or they're having their rates go sky high. and it is an incredible problem. well, if policy owners are not able to continue with coverage through private insurance companies, they do have the option of getting coverage through california's fair plan, which is seen as a temporary fix or even a last ditch effort for coverage. that's because the supervisor, mueller, puts it, their rates double or even triple, but they have less coverage. now the mercury news is reporting that state farm is projecting dropping 1 million policies in the state over the next five years. so the big question really is will a state
6:38 am
of emergency declaration mean anything tangible for policy owners? and it could laura. it could possibly put in place a moratorium so that insurance companies can't just drop a policy owners, or it can tell them that they can't drop them at all. could put that ban in place. of course, the more that these calls grow, then the bigger of a highlight on that problem that it can put. so there that is the hope here. we're live in daly city, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. certainly affecting a lot of california homeowners. thank you very much ginger. thank you. a live look for you this morning over in the san francisco skyline. and you can be sure many people in the city will have their eyes pointed skyward, starting early afternoon today. of course, listening to a familiar roar. now i'm talking about the roar you see right here of the jet engines. because at some point this afternoon, the blue angels are expected to run their first practice session as part of this weekend's fleet week festivities. the angels, of
6:39 am
course, will be the centerpiece of the air show starting tomorrow. they only fly at about 3 p.m, but there's no specific announcement of the time just yet. want to turn right now to forecasterusbeca the weekend wer outlook is what a lot of folks are wondering about, especially when you want to go and look up into the sea and hear the blue angels just feeling the roar and all of the greatness through san francisco. that's absolutely right, marcus. now for today we are looking at a cooling trend starting in the bay area. so you'll notice at times cloudy skies, but you'll definitely hear the blue angels. our temperatures will top off there in the upper 60s. now, if you're planning to go to the city through the weekend, we'll notice. not much change for tomorrow, but saturday could bring about just some more cloudy skies and even the chance of drizzle throughout the morning hours. but sunday, i think, looks spectacular. there's other things going on around the bay area. maybe you're going up into santa rosa for the art and wine festival. that's where we're also going to keep tracking the forecast for the chance of some light showers throughout the day. but that's
6:40 am
saturday and sunday, right there at courthouse square. maybe you want to get away from just the entire bay area. we are looking at lake tahoe. temperatures mild there, but notice those overnight lows dipping down into the 30s. ooh, chilly a little bit of that change for the fall weather. but mike you're looking at traffic coming into the south bay right. there's a little bit of a different compression here coming into dunn up to dunn where there's a crash or a disabled vehicle right at the onramp. it must be visible to 101 north, because all this traffic is kind of jammed up out of san martin, holding it up a little bit right here, coming into morgan hill, keeping it from san jose for a few extra minutes. we're just now seeing the build here, 101 and 87 more traffic to come though. and then in downtown, as cynthia talked about, we do have the home opener for the sharks. so watch sap center. there will be a fan fest outside. so watch for pedestrians. we're excited as well. watch or listen for me yelling from home. meanwhile, over here, 92 overnight we will have some construction landscape work going on between alameda de las pulgas and ralston. so that's between 101 and 280 overnight right now. and during
6:41 am
the day next week, we're looking at smooth drives around the rest of the east bay. and watch 37 eastbound one lane will blocked overnight for construction there as well. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. shining the light on mental health awareness. coming up next on today in the bay how one south bay father is using art to illuminate in a unique way. he's giving back through his work. the white house and fema, even the governor of florida trying to fight back against misinformation about the hurricane. and i'm kris sanchez at the shark tank. the san jose sharks dropped the puck on their season tonight. we're going to tell you why there's reason for excitement with a younger team coming in. and even if you watch the statistics, why there's something in it for you as a fan as well. you're
6:42 am

san francisco is in crisis and we need real experienced leadership. we need mark farrell. our interim mayor who got things done. who showed we can clear tent encampments, fight crime, and address the drug crisis. who will make the tough choices for our city's future. there's no reason for fans to have the blues for this season because there are a lot of reasons to be excited. the first of which is that the ice is in and it is ready for tonight. here's a time lapse of the ice going in. fun fact for you, the ice remains through the playoffs. and so if you come to a concert or any other event here at the sap center, you know the sharks ice is still underneath. and i mentioned it goes it stays in until the playoffs. i have dan rusanowsky here. audio play by play for the sharks. and we're hoping maybe playoffs or maybe close to playoffs this year. what do you think the attitude is to be in the conversation all season long? as long as possible when you've had a 19 win season kris, it's a really long climb to get back. the sharks have done that once in their history, way, way back in the 1990s. to do that again, it's very, very difficult. but they're very excited about the young talent that they have on this team. among the best group of prospects in the league, solid veterans that have come in to replace some people departing.
6:50 am
and i think there's a real sense of optimism here in san jose about how things are going to look on this ice tonight. all right. well, one of those young guys coming in right now is macklin celebrini. and the sharks moved mountains to get him here, right? well, they absolutely. the first thing they had to endure the pain of finishing dead last and then winning the lottery, which is not guaranteed. so when they won the draft lottery, then they were able to select him out of boston university. this was the youngest player in college hockey last year, and he was named the best player in college hockey when he was given the hobey baker award, which is the equivalent of the heisman trophy in college hockey. so that's quite an accomplishment. and he's not the only young one. well, no. in fact, one of his arch rivals last year he was at boston university, will smith was at boston college, and they played against each other and competed. oh, yeah, competed against each other. will is fourth overall in the previous draft, and he's somebody that the sharks think is going to have an unbelievable career. another guy a year older than mclain is somebody that is going

a little bit into talking about the weekend. we are going to be noticing more increasing cloud cover as we go on into late friday early saturday. even a chance of seeing just some spotty showers, mainly for the north bay as we go on into saturday morning. it should be out of here and give us a better half of the weekend for sure. as we take a look at that 7-day forecast, we'll go low 80s for today and tomorrow. dip it down with that approaching system for saturday, and we'll watch the spotty showers there. and overall just keep it trending there in the 80s for our inland valley, san francisco should be a nice finish there to fleet week. we'll watch saturday and sunday for the big show. of course, mike, the bay bridge drive holding up. well yeah, it's a really good show here at the toll plaza. i was worried because i saw the span slowing down quite a bit. i thought they might slow the metering lights down, but i see movement here. that's great. not a lot of buildup off the berkeley curve. so a smoother drive. it is thursday, so a lighter volume than tuesday and wednesday. usually there's a crash reported westbound 24 just off that walnut creek interchange looking
