"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm christina ruffini. we're going to begin this morning in the middle east where israel says four of its soldiers were killed by a drone strike on a military base in the north of the country. dozens more were injured, seven of them severely according to the idf. hezbollah has taken credit for the attack. the idf is investigating how the drone was able to reach the base from lebanon without being detected. and the u.s. will send an anti-missile defense system to israel along with troops to operate t the terminal high altitude area defense system commonly called thad can intersect both long, medium and short range ballistic missiles. the pentagon says it will help bolster israel's air defenses ahead of a possible escalation with iran. israel has vowed to retaliate

against iran's ballistic missile strike from the 1st of october. there are only, believe it or not, 22 days left in the countdown to election day and the race could not get any tighter. new polling from nbc news shows a statistical dead heat between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump. nbc's alice barr is joining us now. alice, good morning. when you dig into this poll, what else does it tell you about the state of the race? >> christina, good morning. we are seeing a major gender gap between the two candidates. vice president harris is head with women by 14 points while mr. trump has a 16 point advantage among men. also razor thin margins in those all important battleground states that the campaigns have been so focused on. on the issues former president trump continues to dominate when it comes to immigration and the economy, while vice president harris is stronger on the issue of abortion and more voters are seeing her as the candidate of change. there was another security

concern for former president trump sunday at his rally in coachella, california. we're learning new details about the armed man who was arrested a quarter of a mile away from that event. 49-year-old vem miller was taken into custody. officials say he had a legal possession of a loaded handgun, shotgun and a high capacity magazine. in an interview by phone with fox news miller says he always travels with firearms and that he supports donald trump. miller was released on $5,000 bond and a law enforcement source tells nbc news this is not being investigated as an assassination attempt. the local sheriff explained why miller was seen as a threat. >> what we do know is he showed up with multiple passports with different names, an unregistered vehicle with fake license plate and loaded firearms.

>> vice president harris spent sunday campaigning in north carolina at a packed rally she accused former president trump of not being transparent with his medical records after she released a report that includes a physician's note saying she's in excellent health. a spokesperson for mr. trump says the former president trump is in perfect health and pointed to his busy campaign schedule, and on that note both harris and trump have campaign events later today in pennsylvania. christina. >> alice, hoping you are in good health, too. thanks for getting up early. >> you, too. florida is still reeling after hurricane milton barrelled through the state last week. there have been 17 confirmed deaths and nearly half a million people are still without power, but more help may be on the way. nbc's stephanie gosk has more fro from florida. >> reporter: florida residents are picking up the pieces. president biden touring the damage in st. petersburg promising over $600 million to

tragic moment. >> the suspect was arrested in louisiana and is now awaiting extradition. the second suspect is still on the loose. and one man was shot and nine other people were wounded when gunfire broke out after a tennessee state university homecoming parade on saturday. two groups started shooting at each other as the crowds were thinning out according to nashville police. three of those shot are children between 12 and 14 years old, although none of their injuries are thought to be critical. it's not clear how many people fired the shots but police believe at least one shooter was hospitalized. now to some dangerous moments at an international balloon fiesta in new mexico. a hot air balloon hit power lines and caught on fire near a construction site. fortunately the fire crews quickly put out the flames and nobody was hurt. earlier in the festival a balloon hit a radio tower and caused it to collapse. that balloon was able to land

safely. now, fall is finally in the air, at least along the east coast, and nbc meteorologist michelle grossman has a look at your weather for the week ahead. michelle, we want good news, we want lattes and pumpkins and fall things. >> all the apple picking all of that stuff. we will feel like fall throughout most of the workweek in the northeast, new england chilly in some spots in new england this morning, mountain snow there. also looking at the chance for showers throughout the interior parts of the northeast. chilly start in the northern plains, 5 million under freeze alerts, frost advisory, starting out at or below freezing. feeling like summer in the south. the pumpkin picking may be put off a little bit. looking at temperatures in the 80s, even into the 100s once again in the desert southwest. the pacific northwest looking at rain showers and that will move off into the inner mountain west by later tomorrow. western wet and cooler in california, more record warmth in the intermountain west.

the west coast which is holding production of keyaircraft. the company says it will now also delay the rollout of it's 777 x plane to 2026. the response is that boeing is caught in a doom loop even with a new ceo. elsewhere retailers are feeling spooked already ahead of the holiday season with halloween costumes and consumption seeing some declines out there with further trending down in terms of spending patterns. spending overall for the season is expected to fall by 5% to $11.6 billion this year according to the national retail federation. splurges over the season seen as quite key to the retailers. this is where you're seeing some pull back. i mentioned costumes, but also greeting cards expected to see declines, still high costs and unemployment levels edging up, this is impacting consumption for heavily indebted retailers facing competition. back to you. >> maybe everyone's mom is making their costume like mine used to.
