election day. kamala harris and donald trump now neck and neck. our washington insider is live
5:01 am
with more on the candidate's final campaign push. also, all new details on an arrest outside a trump rally in southern california. plus, a popular pumpkin patch in the south bay is drawing thousands of visitors a day and is causing a stir with locals. the problem? neighbors say it's creating and here's a live look outside meteorologist kari hall, timing out your week long forecast as we all start a new workweek. this is today in the bay. because mondays are fun. good morning. hope you had a great weekend. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute in just a moment with mike. but first let's talk about that forecast coming off a nice weekend. it was a great weekend. although the fog really caused a lot of issues for the fleet week. but we're going to see that continue to cool off much of the bay area. and then we're going to see a few more changes over the next few days. today it's the coastline we're watching with a beach hazard
5:02 am
statement in effect and the risk of possible sneaker waves. those are those waves that come up a lot higher than some of the previous waves. and that may make things a lot more dangerous there. but we're also going to start to see more clouds moving in tomorrow. temperatures stay nice, but then on wednesday we will have a chance of some scattered showers and some breezy winds. it will be nice to see those rain chances coming in. take a look at your high for today with those temperatures in the low 70s for san jose and low 80s for san martin. we'll talk about the changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, you saw a crash reported in the north bay. i did, but i asked ben to turn our camera over toward the southbound 101. the curves at terra linda. we don't see any disturbance to the flow. the flow here is because of our digital camera there. so let's get to the sensors. we'll tell you that there's no issue for the sensors either. sensors slowing should show up right around here. if that crash was presenting a problem. wait for the update. but it doesn't sound like any lanes are blocked.
5:03 am
there's a little fog in the north bay. no surprise. as we look at the rest of the bay. an easy flow of traffic. it is a indigenous peoples day, so there may be some businesses that are off today, but so far we're here. we know a lot of commuters are hitting the road, and highway 84 starts to show that traditional slowing coming into sunol. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, the race for the white house is closing in. there is now 22 days until voters head to the polls on november fifth. a nbc news poll. it shows that registered voters in the presidential race. well, it's deadlocked. they're at 48%. vice president harris and former president trump are ramping up campaign events across the country. and another security concern is grabbing those headlines today in the bay's alice barr is live for us in washington this morning with the latest there. alice. good morning marcus. yeah, we've been talking about just how close this race is. and now this new nbc news polling is offering more proof as well as insights into what could potentially sway voters. as the presidential nominees pick up the pace on the
5:04 am
campaign trail with your help, in 23 days, we will win. we will. we're going to win arizona, and we are going to defeat kamala. kamala. a new nbc news national poll of registered voters shows the race in a dead heat at 48%, indicating a slowdown for vice president harris after her popularity surged in the last nbc poll following a september debate. the poll points to a deep gender gap, with vice president harris leading with women by 14 points. one of the things that attracted me to her is that she was smart. and former president trump ahead with men by 16 points. he's he's worked hard. he's created jobs. he's built businesses. margins remain razor thin in the critical battleground states. and on the issues, the former president is seen as stronger in handling the economy and immigration. you know what i
5:05 am
did? i called them up. i said, close the border while the vice president gets a boost on reproductive rights campaigning in north carolina, she highlighted her newly released medical records, including her physician, saying she's in excellent health, putting the pressure on mr. trump. he refuses to release his medical records that as federal authorities are investigating a new potential security threat, a man with guns in his vehicle was arrested saturday, stopped at a checkpoint about a quarter mile from former president trump's rally site in coachella, california. a federal law enforcement official said there was no indication this was an assassination attempt. an official familiar with the situation said that former president trump was not yet at the rally site when that suspect was arrested, and separately responding to vice president harris's comments about the former president's medical records, a trump spokesperson said he is in perfect health and pointed to his busy campaign
5:06 am
schedule. both nominees are set to be on the trail today in pennsylvania. we'll send it back to you, marcus and laura. all right. alex bowen washington. thank you. alice. 505 right now, the skies over san francisco will be quiet today as fleet week winds down. while there are a few events happening today, the big news happened over the weekend when the blue angels took to the skies and a navy parachutist missed the mark. yeah. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now. and kris, two people we know were injured. are they okay. yeah they are okay. so we're talking about a mother and a child. they were injured when that navy parachutist came down in the wrong spot at marina green. they were taken to the hospital and the video here, you see that parachute is coming down from the sky. the mother and child suffered minor injuries, but they were taken to the hospital to be on the safe side. they are going to be okay. marina green is also where people showed up to watch the blue angels, and they did not disappoint. that wasn't the case on saturday when the famous fliers had to cancel
5:07 am
because the visibility was just too bad. fleet week also put service members and the public in the same space for ship tours and concerts, and various ceremonies. nearly 2500 sailors, marines and coast guardsmen were here for fleet week, along with more than a million spectators, making the city feel very alive. didn't happen. i'm like, all right, guys, i guess we'll stay in the hotel and come on out here again. while the final festivities happening today, performance by the first marine division, ceremonial ceremonial band and the high school band challenge, that's happening at golden gate park, and you can get your final ship tours of the uss somerset and the uss tripoli from nine to noon today. and while those trips and tours are free, of course people did spend a lot of money while they were in san francisco throughout the week. organizers say as much as $10 million into the city. final numbers are still yet to come,
5:08 am
but that sounds nice. that sounds. yeah, that sounds good. a big boost. thank you. thanks, chris. well, we all know a lot of things always going on around the bay area. and pumpkin season, of course, is here. and that means thousands of people heading out to local pumpkin patches. spina farms, pumpkin patch in morgan hill, seeing some 10,000 visitors a day. certainly good for business there, but the attraction spooking some neighbors who say they're tired of dealing with traffic gridlock on santa teresa boulevard. one neighbor spoke to us off camera. my biggest concern is access for the residents who live out here. we literally basically, if we want to go somewhere, it takes us 30 minutes to get out someplace. and it takes us an hour plus to get back. what we're doing is we're making a road that they could cut across through the through the fields we have over there. so local access road for the local farmers, our families. and so that's we're building
5:09 am
that right now. we're flattening it out, grading it so that they can drive over it. and they could be able to get out and in without having to wait through all the traffic. that was operations manager danny estrada talking about their possible solution. they're trying to make it work. he says. the farm has also hired chp and sheriff's deputies to help with traffic control. they also have put up signs telling visitors not to park in people's driveways. but neighbors say there's another issue. johnny, be good tonight. go, go. they say those pumpkin blasters and amplified music are impacting their sleep. they say the sound goes on until 9:00 at night. el pino farms says it adheres to county noise ordinances. well, now to a live look at our state capital this morning. this is where today, governor gavin newsom's gas price bill is facing its final hurdle. now, the proposed bill would require oil refineries to maintain a minimum inventory level to prevent price spikes during peak driving months. now that bill has been supported by
5:10 am
several california mayors and other local leaders. but gas companies oppose it. they claim the refineries are already full, and they do not have the tanks to actually hold extra oil. the state senate passed that bill last week. it is now moving on to the assembly for a final vote. governor gavin newsom is expected to speak about this issue at 2:00 this afternoon. let's take a peek outside live. look at downtown san jose waiting for the sun's arrival. our own sunshine is back. kari hall, fresh off vacation. bringing the sunshine with you. yeah, i got some sleep, so it was great. tell us what that's like. and we're starting out this morning. back to work and back to some of the same weather. we had over the weekend. and walnut creek. you're walking out the door to 58 degrees. nice and cool in san mateo, 59 degrees and 56 in san francisco. you can see that fog and drizzle once again. so it's all over the camera lens here
5:11 am
and low visibility in some spots. we'll see that fog continue throughout the morning with some peeks of sunshine and temperatures here headed for the mid 60s. another nice one, but we'll talk about rain chances ahead. and mike, you're giving us a look at where we can find some lower gas prices. that's right kerry. we're taking a look out here. we actually are able to dip below for a buck as we roll down through here. we're looking at alameda county as we're looking at 399 at vargas on griner. that's in fremont for the top price we have here next to the north bay mill valley is the best on the list for marin county. 401 at arco on redwood highway. the last one on here is san jose's best 409. the location is no mystery. it's chevron on winchester boulevard, right across the freeway from sarah's historic house. you can check on all these houses. what's closest to you? gasbuddy.com folks on the roadway. we'll look at a smooth drive. i want to give you the update. the chp has removed the crash. south 101. we were looking for that with the live
5:12 am
camera. no disturbance and no problem through san rafael. a smooth drive through contra costa county on the right side of the screen. and here's your berkeley curve. those taillights turning to the right after they top the screen. getting over toward the bay bridge. toll plaza. clear and easy. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 511 for you this morning. you know, they say everything is bigger in texas. well, they must not have heard about what's happening right here in the bay area today. i want you to stick around because we're talking about the highly anticipated half moon bay pumpkin weigh-off set to happen in a matter of hours. also, pop star impressions. we've got highlights from ariana grande's return to snl. keep it here. you're watching

5:15 am
clouds and we'll see them linger through about noon. but that keeps those temperatures down. and we're going from 60 at 8:00 to the low 70s for today. it's going to be a nice one, but big changes ahead. we may even see some rain. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. all right. but right now this is the shot from dublin to sahara with those tail lights westbound. look at the top of the screen. goes off to the dublin green a little bending in the roadway, but no problem with those speeds. things are moving smoothly here in the tri-valley. let's check the business world with pippa. wall street is set for a mixed open as investors gear up for more earnings reports this week. jpmorgan and wells fargo posting strong results on friday, helping to

power the markets with the dow and s&p closing at record highs. traders, though, still remain cautious against the backdrop of the election uncertainty over the federal reserve's interest rate policy and rising geopolitical risks in the middle east. in focus this week, data on import prices, retail sales, jobless claims and housing. about 40 companies in the s&p 506 dow components report earnings, including bank of america, citigroup, netflix and united airlines. a note the bond market is closed today for the holiday. boeing announcing plans late friday to lay off 17,000 employees, or 10% of its workforce, as it deals with the strike that shut down production at its factories on the west coast. analysts say the cuts are in strike related furloughs, but are more about tough choices by boeing's new ceo to reduce cost. the company hasn't reported an annual profit since 2018, as it's been hit by a series of

problems with the 737 max. boeing's defense business has also performed poorly. apple could release a cheaper version of the vision pro headset next year, with a price tag of about $2,000. the current model costs $3,500. bloomberg reports apple would likely use cheaper materials and a less powerful processor, and the device would not include the eyesight feature that shows a user's eyes outside the headset. a second generation vision pro is expected sometime in 2026. with your cnbc morning business report, i'm pippa stevens. thank you pippa. well happening today giant pumpkin growers will be vying for the big title in half moon bay. it is time again for the annual pumpkin weigh-off. this is video of last year's event where a pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds broke the world record. if the winner breaks another world record, organizers are offering a prize of $30,000. the winning
5:18 am
pumpkin will also be on display next weekend for all to see. this year marks half moon bay 51st annual pumpkin competition. it's a lot of gorgeous. well, training this morning, ariana grande returned to host saturday night live for the third time over the weekend. and while she wasn't pulling the double duty as the night's musical performer, she actually gave fans a little taste of her vocal chops with her famous impressions. i'm not gonna do my impressions. no britney spears today. if you ask me again, i'll say the same thing. i know baby, baby. i'm not gonna do miley cyrus. cause baby, that ain't gonna work. candice impressions didn't stop there. she also played celine dion as well as jennifer coolidge. saturday night live's episode comes amid a ratings spike for snl, likely
5:19 am
brought on by the 50th season and the upcoming election. how fun. yeah. each night when they do the cabinets on either side, you know, proposed cabinets and whatnot, they've got so many stars on there from past seasons. yeah, it is. it's really kind of fun. yeah, exactly. especially with the political climate we're in. yeah. what are you talking abou? all right, let's talk about this forecast for today. another nice one on tap. yeah, but you know what? you're going to want to check in every single morning because things are going to be changing as we go throughout the week. but today we're relaxing, enjoying the weather we had over the weekend. but if you are going to the beach just a heads up that it will be dangerous out there and then we're watching for rain chances on wednesday. and then after that we go from a chance of rain. nice and mild to a dry offshore wind which could increase our fire danger. after seeing a chance of showers, we're going to talk about all of those changes. looking at today, what to expect near the coastline. some of those waves
5:20 am
coming up about 6 to 8ft. so that's some of those sneaker waves that come up. you have normal waves coming up. and then all of a sudden one comes up much higher on the beach than some of the previous waves. and that's what we mean by those sneaker waves. also, the risk of rip currents can which force some people. if you're out there in the water, can carry you farther out into the ocean. so big heads up about that. even though we are going to see some fog and temperatures in the low 60s, as we look at some of our inland areas today, it's going to be in the 70s and low 80s, really comfortable temperatures. and then about the same for tomorrow as well with san jose's high up to about 75 degrees 80 in concord. and we'll see upper 70s in much of the north bay going into wednesday. there's not much of a change temperature wise, but this is when we will have a front coming in that could bring in some scattered showers starting out on wednesday morning, continuing into at least the early afternoon. but a closer look at that hour by hour forecast shows
5:21 am
rain chances, mainly during the morning and then continuing to move off toward the cierra. we're also going to see some of those rainfall totals measurable at about a 10th of an inch for parts of the east bay, as well as the south bay. and our 7-day forecast shows that we're going to see a nice mild week with those rain chances midweek. but then by the end of the week as it dries out, it's also going to become gusty and we'll have to watch out for the fire weather conditions that we'll see. very typical of this time of year, but of always a big concern for us as the vegetation remains very dry. and mike, you're checking on folks leaving the east bay? yeah, they're leaving via richmond, the bridge over to san rafael. just a few folks. quite manageable. no major problems. remember, there's overnight roadwork scheduled in each direction. one lane that continues. this week we are looking at the slowing typical out of vallejo for highway 37 slowing at mare island. right on schedule. even on a holiday for many businesses. as we look over
5:22 am
here, highway four shows up with the speed limit all the way down here through concord, walnut creek, highway 24 to the caldecott or 680 down in through san ramon. in fact, look at these travel times as we look at vasco road. we are up to 18 minutes. that's a couple minutes from the minimum there, but no problems. right on schedule here out of contra costa county and in out of the altamont pass for a little bit of slowing up to about grantline road and everything's at the limit toward the dublin interchange. here's the south bay. no slowing for silicon valley, but we do have that build starting in san martin, right on schedule here. so, you know, it's coming in towards san jose. back to you. thank you mike. 521 this morning next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. he's racking up lots of miles taking his new car back to the dealer for service. plus he's paying for some of the work himself. i'm consumer investigator chris chmu, nbc bayra

problems persisted when his explorer's warranty expired. darryl paid out of pocket for more fixes. well, he wanted some of that money back, so he contacted us. we contacted ford corporate and the dealer capital. ford said it, and ford hq chipped in and refunded darryl $648. and he's happy with that capital. ford said that, well, it felt that these items should not have failed, so it provided assistance with the repair. if you ever buy a new car that has repeated issues in the first 18 months, make sure to document every service call. if a dealer can't fix it after four attempts, consider contacting the department of consumer affairs to see if you have a viable lemon law case to either get your money back or get a new car. if your consumer case is on the road to nowhere, maybe we can help. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form

there has to be other options right now at 530. regulating gas prices. the key vote state leaders are set to make later today, aimed at lowering the price you pay at the pump. plus, recognizing indigenous americans, the event happening today in the bay area marking the occasion and the vinyl, the annual, i should say pumpkin weigh-off returning to the bay area and half moon bay. we are live this morning over in half moon bay with more on this year's 51st competition. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this monday. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. a lot to get to this morning. we're starting out
5:31 am
with a look at the forecast. fall is in the air. meteorologist kari hall is back tracking what we can expect. and nice, cool mornings. mild afternoons. this is what we think of when we imagine fall. but we're also going to see these things change as we go throughout the week. so we're starting out right now. temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s. it is 51 right now in sonoma and 61 in oakland, 60 in fremont and 63 in san jose. looking at dublin this morning already a busy start to our monday morning, we are going to see a few clouds to start sunshine throughout the day and nice comfortable temperatures there. those highs in the lower 70s. looking across the bay area will range from low 60s near the coast to low 80s farther inland, and we will see more of these temperatures. but a change with rain chances coming in midweek. so i'll talk more about that. mike, you're looking at changes at the bay bridge. yeah, just a few more cars visible on this shot of the bay bridge toll plaza. as they approach the toll
5:32 am
plaza. we'll start to see more slowing over the next ten minutes. and possibly a backup by the time we take that next report. but so far, no major issues as we're traveling down through the maze and out of the east bay top of the screen. typical out of vallejo and mare island west 37 continues to show the build no issues for novato all the way down to the golden gate bridge. there's a little slowing there on highway four. look at that. coming into concord out of pittsburgh and bay point. pretty traditional for that part of contra costa county. an easy drive. there's a fender bender reported on the shoulder west 580, and the arrow shows north 680. that crew around bernal may be causing a little bit of slowing, and they should be clearing in the next 40 minutes. we'll check on that from the grid. meanwhile, back to you guys. thanks, mike. today, governor gavin newsom is set to make another push for his gas price bill, aiming to help those trying to make it in the bay. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the east bay this morning. okay, so, bob, the senate just passed the legislation aimed at lowering those prices. talk to us about what's going to happen next. well, good morning to marcus and laura. now that the senate has
5:33 am
passed the state assembly must consider this legislation. and if they pass it, then it would go to governor gavin newsom's desk for him to sign into law. according to triple a us californians, we already pay an average of about $1.28 more for a gallon of gas than the rest of the country. later this afternoon, the governor will host a news conference with legislators to remind californians and the assembly why he thinks this new law is good for drivers, and why he says it could bring down the price of gasoline. it would require oil refineries to maintain a minimum inventory level to prevent price spikes during peak driving months. the bill has been supported by several california mayors and other local leaders, but gas companies oppose this bill. the proposed bill would give energy regulators authority to require refineries to maintain a two week supply of oil on hand. proponents of it say that the oil reserve would save californians billions of dollars at the pump. again, gas companies oppose this bill. they say. refineries are already filled full and don't have the tanks to hold the extra oil.
5:34 am
julie berg is with the western states petroleum association, says if this bill is passed and the new regulations take effect, the bill would unintentionally raise gas prices. the california energy commission itself said that this could potentially create artificial shortages. so that means we're going to have to withhold product from the market so that can absolutely increase prices, increase on gas periods is just outrageous. like we need like gas to be at like a reasonable price just to commute to work, to be able to pay for our gas. it's hard. i mean, you have to make choices at consume, but i mean, gas is a big part of it. so it's housing, right? those are the two components that either allow you to live here or force you to move away. governor gavin newsom's press conference with legislators is scheduled for 2:00 this afternoon. reporting live here in east bay, bob redell. today in the bay. hopefully we see
5:35 am
some of those savings in our wallets. all right. thanks so much, bob. in just a few hours, the trial for the man accused of murdering founder of cash app is set to start. nima momeni is accused of stabbing and killing bob lee in san francisco last year. lee's body was found by emergency crews outside the port side apartments on main street. investigators say security camera video showed momeni with lee before that stabbing. well, many lawyers tried to move the trial outside of san francisco over concerns that he couldn't receive a fair trial there. but the request was denied. opening statements are expected to start later this morning. well, in the east bay, one man is dead. this is after a fiery crash in antioch. it happened just after five yesterday morning on highway four. this is just west of eighth street. now, chp is saying that a ford pickup truck broke down on the highway. a few minutes later, a driver in a honda hit that truck. now, that impact was so intense, it actually caused that honda to burst into flames, trapping the
5:36 am
driver inside. sadly, he died there at the scene. the driver of that ford was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. now to a live look towards alcatraz island in the san francisco bay, where people celebrating indigenous peoples day are headed at this hour for a special sunrise celebration. they're taking ferries from fisherman's wharf. the event honors the original occupiers of alcatraz, the lives, sacrifices, courage and survival of the indigenous people and culture. well, flu season is here, and experts say now is the time to get your vaccine. the cdc partnering with the ad council on psas like this one you see here, encouraging more people to get vaccinated. this flu season. now, anyone six months or older recommended to get the vaccine, which reduces the risk of serious illness and death during 2023 to 2024 flu season, less than half of all the people eligible actually got the vaccine. that's even lower than the year before. data also shows
5:37 am
that black and hispanic people had lower rates of immunization from the flu. you know, we have tens of thousands of people die every year from from influenza in the us alone. and in about half a million die globally each year. and all that is preventable. i think if you use the vaccine, either you don't get the illness at all or you get an illness that is completely manageable. now, if you are looking to get the vaccine, there are a lot of places to get it. you can find out where you can go to my flu shot.org or visit the cdc website. let's take a peek outside live. look at dublin folks making their way across the span there of mike will have a look at that morning commute. kerry is back with a look at our forecast for today. nice day ahead. yeah, it's going to be a really nice day starting out cloudy but then clearing out and the temperatures are going to be so comfortable as we go into later today. and as we take a look at where we're starting right now, san jose is at 63
5:38 am
degrees. it's cloudy and it's 57. in san mateo, very light wind. and in some parts of the bay area, those clouds in the morning will linger a lot longer. in san francisco, foggy and 68 degrees, maybe even misting and drizzling near the coast and then across the bay to oakland. it will be 71 for the afternoon, 73 in hayward and martinez. today, 77 a little bit warmer as you make your way into the valleys, with concord reaching a high of 80 degrees. it will also be 80 in santa rosa and 80 in san martin. now, tomorrow it's going to be in some spots a degree or two warmer. but overall very nice and mild and very seasonable. and then on wednesday we're looking at more of the same temperatures, but watching out for those clouds overhead that may drop some spotty showers here and there. the best chance will be in the east bay and the south bay. so we'll get a closer look at that and how much rain to expect in a few minutes. mike, you're looking at the flow of the traffic through the bay bridge toll plaza, right? because sometimes many days, many weekdays, we'll see the
5:39 am
backups starting to form right at the edge of the screen. we don't even see any slowing right now. so the flow maintains that even pace. we saw ten minutes ago. again, though, this is a holiday for a lot of banks. and of course, the federal offices like the post office. so there may be fewer folks on the road for the early commute. we are looking at highway 37 showing a traditional slowing pattern. highway 4 shows traditional areas, but again, monday's are lighter. tomorrow, tuesday will kick in a little more strongly. no major issues. this will be a surprise for some folks, but you're seeing it here. you're warned there will be a closure for eastbound 37 starting tonight at ten through ten tomorrow morning. that will go on nightly for this week, eastbound again away from novato and heading over toward vallejo. so it's counter to your morning commute. this will happen late overnight hours. your alternate, of course, is to take 101 north and atherton avenue over, and that will add some time to your trip. heading out of again novato overnight. meanwhile, we're looking at the rest of the bay and a smooth flow of traffic right now along 92 westbound as
5:40 am
your commute direction are now is your direction over toward half moon bay. but this section through the san mateo hills will have landscaping work going on in the westbound direction. watch for a lane to be closed and watch for those crews. of course, in the south bay, pretty typical predictable timing here for north 101. no major surprises for the south bay. a nice easy flow of traffic throughout san jose. the first burst just kicking in right on schedule. back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. the future of the daca program remains undefined. ahead on today in the bay. the thousands of dreamers remaining in uncertainty as an appeals court reviews whether the program is legal. plus, niners rookie ricky pearsall ready to return to practice. we have those details on how we can see him hit the field. no way. yes way. we are live at the world championship. pumpkin. way off here in half moon bay. it's that time of year again, guys. take a look at these pumpkins that are
5:41 am
going to vie for the world record. we'll have much more
