the race to the white house and just 22 days to go until election day. >> the race appears to be deadlocked in the newest nbc news poll. former president trump and vice president harris are tied at 48% among registered voters. harris has lost the five-point lead she had in the last nbc news poll in september. the new polling comes as both candidates are in must-win pennsylvania. joining us now is gabe gutierrez in columbus, georgia and dasha burns. dasha, let's start with you. the former president will be at town halls sent to and tomorrow. tomorrow's event will be with an all-women audience and that's a group that prefers vice president harris. what exactly is the strategy? >> you guys talked at the outset here about just how insanely close this race is right now. both of these candidates are at the point where they're trying to shore up the places where they are struggling.

there is that gender gap. the former president is looking to get some women over to his side. this is an issue that's really been irking him. he said at rallies, women like me. women like me. he feels he's not getting enough credit for issues for his attempt to moderate the republican rhetoric and reproductive rights and overturning roe versus wade. he wants to be doing better with this demographic and when it's this close, the ability to maybe chip away a little bit at that lead and narrow those massive gender gap margins just a little bit could make a difference, guys? >> gabe, let me go to you. the vice president kicking off a new push for black male voters and that is specifically targeted at that group. talk us through that. >> that's right, kate, good afternoon. it's an all-out blitz, though.

she's in erie, pennsylvania tonight and will be in detroit, michigan tomorrow for a town hall aimed squarely at targeting young black voters and look at that campaign schedule, throughout the week, both her and her running mate tim walz hitting the blue wall states, michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania and also here in georgia, former president bill clinton was here and with high-profile surrogates trying to reach young black voters as well as rural voters. as you mentioned, she's reeling out new policy proposals aimed as those young black voters and include about a million loans for black entrepreneurs and also money for education and training programs. also legalize recreational marijuana to boost the industry. this all comes, kate, as the harris campaign is trying to get those voters in places like columbus, georgia and places in georgia that democrats typically

don't go outside of atlanta. they feel if they can cut into the republicans' lead in this part of the state this could make all of the difference in the swing states. >> dash a i want to finish with you. a man was arrested in california with guns. what should we know about that? >> a man was stopped at a security checkpoint that was inside the security perimeter. one of the sheriff's deputies thought his vehicle looked suspicious and did end up discovering two unregistered firearms and some ammunition. he was arrested. he has now been released, about both local and federal authorities are investigating and federal authorities say right now they are not treating this as an assassination attempt or an attempt to harm former president trump. >> dasha burns, gabe gutierrez, thanks, guys. appreciate you. >> a nasa spacecraft is on its way to jupiter. the mission to find one of

jupiter's icy moons will see if there's life beyond earth. the launch was originally scheduled for last week and was rescheduled because of hurricane milton. joining us live from miami is marisa parra. why is this particular moon especially interesting to scientists? >> well, i will say it was a big relief to see it finally take off. it was delayed after hurricane milton. we saw it launch today right here on news now, and that was a big relief after a long time of waiting, but this is something that is a quest to answer something humans have been wondering for a very long time. is there life out there? could there ever be life out there beyond earth? and of course, we've heard the songs written by the likes of david bowie, is there life on mars? the question right now is is there life on the specific moon outside of jupiter? it's one of jupiter's 95 moons. it's called europa and it has captivated scientists enough to

spend ten years trying to figure out how to study it up close and the reason being there is believed to be an icy ocean beneath the surface there and they want to take a closer look to see if the chemical compounds are there to sustain or to ever have sustained life beneath that surface. guys, it is no easy feat to get there. it is quite a distance and europa will face embattled radiation, 20,000 times stronger than earth's surface and they'll have to use the gravitational pull from mars to use it as a sling shot to get there. they won't be able to get close to an answer in about six more years. that's how long it will take and we'll see you in 2031 for the long-awaited answers. kate and zinhle. >> can i ask you about another milestone, an incredible landing over the weekend? let's show a clip. >> we are now down to two raptor engines and we can see the chop sticks.

"diddy" combs. >> one from a woman who alleges she was raped by combs when she was 19 years old. combs is currently being held in a detention center in new york city on separate federal criminal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. he has pled not guilty. nbc news correspondent chloe melas with this exclusive reporting. walk us through the first lawsuits. >> these are the first civil suits filed by tony buzzbee. he held a news conference in which he's representing dozens of accusers and he will be naming high-profile individuals besides combs. these are the first and there were five suits filed today on behalf of four men and two women all of which are remaining anonymous out of fear according to she's suits. in these allegations they only name combs and his businesses and a hotel and a department store as defendants. they don't name any other high-from file celebrities and

welcome back. opening statements are under way in the trial of the man charged with killing the founder of the digital finance company cash app. bob lee was stabbed to death in san francisco last year and prosecutors say the suspect planned that attack over a dispute involving his sister. nbc news correspondent dana griffin joins us now. dana, it has been a little while since we talked about this case. can you remind us what it's all about? >> sure, zinhle. this goes back to the night of april 4th, technically midnight. these are two acquaintances and this alleged murder, targeted murder has centered around the victim's relationship to neem

mohamedy. lee was stabbed underneath the bay bridge and stumbled for help and there's video of him trying to flag down a car and the car drives off and he managed to car 911 himself and he later died from a stab wound to his heart and lung. lee had alcohol, cocaine, ketamine and allergy medication in his system and the defense hopes to capitalize on his drug use because they want to paint this as self-defense. they claim that lee is the one who brought the night and that the defendant, mo meni acted in self-defense. >> how long could the trail last? >> it could last through december. we heard from the prosecution. she started the opening statements that the victim was stabbed multiple times and this, ladies and gentlemen, we're sitting in the court with the

murderer. this goes back it the day before the murder where the victim was with the defendant's sister and a couple of friends inside her apartment allegedly using drugs and that that triggered the anger from the defendant, and they talked about some text messages that were sent from the sister to the defendant just six hours after the murder where she called him, quote, psychotic at times and that morning she also texts the victim asking if he was okay because, quote, her brother came way down hard on you. we're going to see more information about what the defendant did days after the murder. investigators say they recorded him at his defense attorney's office motioning stab motions to show how he possibly could have carried out this stabbing. so those are going to be some important pieces of evidence that come up later in this trial. zinhle? >> a lot more information to come. dana griffin, thank you. >> the u.s. embassy in lebanon is telling american citizens if

you are in that country, you are strongly encouraged to get out now. it comes as fighting is increasing in hezbollah and lebanon. the drone attack in northern israel killed four israeli soldiers and injured 61 others. all four soldiers were 19 years old. in gaza meantime, an israeli strike near this helped that you're seeing set off a massive fire. local health officials say three people died and 40 others injured. israel said it was targeting hamas. nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlan is in tel aviv. this all comes including a new missile defense system. tell us more about that? >> yeah. that's right, kate. the pent fwon announcing last night that it would be sending the bad missile defense system to israel to bolsteris ral's air defenses and a significant -- one of the represents is because it requires the presence of u.s.

troops on the ground. about a hundred troops will operate the thaad missile defense system, and i was speaking to a former air force commander here in israel. he was once in charge of israel's air defense and he said this is an important step. not only it shows the close relationship between israel and the united states, but the timing of this is significant because israel had the retaliatory strike against iran following the massive iranian missile barrage on october 1st. this defense system is necessary to be in place so that when israel retaliates and should iran decide to up the ante in a return, israel is prepared to deal with it. >> erin, the united nations human rights office sent out a strongly worded letter today about northern gaza. what's that about? >> yeah.

apartments on main street here in the city. investigators say security camera video showed momani he's the suspect with lee before the stabbing. lee's death at the age of 43 years of age stunned the techommuty in which he wasdmired as an entrepreneur who founded cash app, he was a father to two children. this morning, the prosecution said that the afternoon before his murder, lee was hanging out in an apartment with his sister and two other people and then left with a friend. now the prosecution says that that friend will testify. he heard momani call lee and conducted a, quote, aggressive interrogation about what happened at that apartment. want to know what happened that was inappropriate with his sister? the prosecutor called alemany a quote, overprotective wannabe tough guy who wants some answers. now, the defense says that lee was high on drugs, attacked momani, and that momani acted in self defense. forensic pathologists will likely testify to describe mr. lee's wounds. were there any defensive wounds

on mr. momani that support self-defense? so all of that could come down to a battle of the experts? now, the defense says their client is eager to tell his side of the story, but they have not decided whether or not momani will testify in his defense. his lawyers did try to have this trial moved outside of san francisco over concerns that he couldn't receive a fair trial here, but obviously that request was denied here in the san francisco hall of justice. bob redell nbc bay area news. a man is dead after a fiery crash in the east bay. it happened early yesterday on highway four in antioch. the chp says a ford pickup truck broke down on the side of the road near the eighth street exit. a few minutes later, a driver in a honda slammed into that parked pickup truck. the impact was so intense it caused the honda to burst into flames. the fire trapped the driver inside and he died at the scene. first responders rushed the driver of the pickup to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. some encouraging

news for the 49ers rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall is returning to practice today. it's his first practice since he was shot in the chest in a robbery attempt in san francisco back in august. a 17 year old has been charged with attempted murder for that shooting. it is not clear when pearsall will make his game debut, but it is expected to be after the 49ers played the kansas city chiefs next weekend. our robert honda is tracking his return and will have a full report in our evening newscast. a nice day across the bay area today, but there is a chance of rain later this week. here's meteorologist kari hall. take a look at today's high temperatures. another really nice day. lots of sunshine and comfortable highs in the 60s and 70s from the coast to the peninsula and low 70s for the inner east bay into the tri-valley. it will be in the mid 70s. livermore today 75 degrees 73, in san jose and 79

men's 100-meter final and programfield competed for team jamaica. >> he showed us that gold, remember? >> he did. we are 22 days out, but who is counting from election day and our poll shows the presidential race couldn't be tighter. kamala harris and donald trump are in a dead heat. harris had a five-point lead in the same poll just last month and there is one man for the onand that's nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki at the big board. make it make sense. how did this go to a five-point lead to a deadlock. >> you said it there. 48-44. this poll was taken just after that trump/harris debate. so maybe there's been an effect of that and things have changed a little bit on the ground and this is the biggest thing going on underneath and a lot of numbers on the left side of the screen and this is the basic attitude voters have and we

asked to view him positively or negatively. trump and harris and it's the same, 43% positive and not a great number and each with a higher negative. these numbers looked similar and they did not a month ago. look at this. trump was double digits under water and harris meanwhile, a month ago had a higher positive rating and 48% than negative and a month ago we were saying, harris had opened up a clear likability and a month later that seems to be gone. >> steve, there's still a big gender gap, right? between the two candidates. >> if there was an election among men it is a trump landslide by 16 points. if it's among women, it's a harris landslide by 14 points and of course, an election among men and women and that's why it's tied and the gap between

genders, 14 plus 16 it's currently 30 points who i saw an election day and the all-time high. >> let's talk about the issues and abortion is the top motivating issue for opponents can you ask about that? >> we asked it this way because we were trying to figure out, is there one issue that's so important to you it might be the sole basis of your vote? that's what we asked and we asked that, abortion was mentioned more than any other issue. more than one in five voters, 22% cited abortion as being that important to them and immigration and the border is up at 19% and when you take a look at where these candidates stack up on these issues. look, abortion, you see it right down here. harris with a 19-point advantage over trump and that is to say, who do you think would be better on the issue of abortion by a 19-point margin. voters are saying harris.

this is their biggest wantage on any issue and that is a motivating issue and her campaign not seeing it there and see an obvious advantage on the situation on the border and he would have a 25-point him over harris steve kornacki, thank you. small businesses are desperate for emergency funds to keep afloat. >> now the irs says it's rushing to process around 400,000 claims worth $10 billion from its covid-era employee retention credit program. these were backlogged claims and the funds are needed by small businesses right now. >> nbc news and data correspondent brian chung is joining us right now. this is interesting. how quickly are businesses expected to get this money that's been sitting for so long? >> yeah. kate and zinhle, some of these businesses can't get it fast enough.

here's what we're talking about, these are tax refunds that businesses have been waiting for since covid because there were certain provisions under law at the time that said if you were able to retain your employees through the closures through the pandemic you'd get tax credit up to $26,000 per employee on your payroll. there's been a backlog of businesses getting that money and in north carolina, tennessee and now in florida, there are businesses that haven't gotten those tax credits and they have a piled issue off the flood hurricane-related damage. ? my check check spoke one business in this minuty? they just experienced ago their 20,000 in dshlg from the hurricane 37. >> they're picking it ape top top priority about miltdon helene and and are no time.
