6:02 am
but sunny throughout much of the day as our highs head for the mid 70s and then later on tonight we'll start to see more clouds coming in. take a look all across the bay area with a very nice seasonable mid october day. 71 in san francisco, 81 in napa and 82 in concord. dublin today once again in the mid 70s in fremont this afternoon, 71 degrees. we'll talk about a chance of rain and tomorrow's forecast coming up. mike, you're tracking a hazard in oakland. yeah. kari southbound 880. this shot here shows the 66 overcrossing. and that's where traffic was restricted. notice the flashing lights as we started this 6:00 hour. saw everything move to the side and southbound. now restoring traffic flow past the coliseum without disturbance. there is a bit of a slowdown approaching the area and then continuing as traffic releases right here about where the camera was right there. so a smoother drive expected. the southbound is your commute direction heading in toward hayward, where we do see some slowing for the sensors. and also westbound, the
6:03 am
eastshore freeway going south on the compass continues to show the build highway 37 no surprises, and eastbound reopened after last night's overnight closure. we're looking at highway four westbound coming in to concord slow as you leave pittsburgh and bay point. but no big surprises. south bay peninsula and the tri-valley move nicely. back to you. thanks, mike. well, two north bay schools are closed today. this is following the threat at one elementary school. our sky ranger was overhead of pine grove elementary school. this is near petaluma. yesterday afternoon, after that school was placed on lockdown. after receiving the threat. students were eventually bused to a safe location, reunited with their parents. pine grove elementary will be closed today along with petaluma's kenilworth junior high. kenilworth did not receive that threat, but investigators say since the connection was made to that school, it will be closed as a precaution. the district says classes at both schools will resume tomorrow. also today, visually impaired people are set to rally against uber and lyft in san francisco.
6:04 am
the group claims the rideshare apps discriminate against the blind. today, in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us now. and ginger, how are lyft and uber responding? well, laura, uber and lyft are saying they're taking these claims seriously. uber says they are piloting new technology and updating their education modules for their drivers to support their partners within the disability community. now, months ago, our investigative unit already looked into claims from riders across the bay area who say they are being discriminated against because they ride with service dogs. today, those riders plan to amplify their calls for change. now the national federation of the blind will lead today's rally. members taking part say they hope to draw more attention to what they say is the company's failure to stop discrimination against blind individuals, particularly those accompanied by guide dogs. this not only violates the company's own policies, but also state and

federal law. lisa irving from mill valley tells us the refusals have a major impact on her daily life. i just want to go about my life doing what i want to do and what i need to do and not have chronic anxiety about, am i going to be late? am i going to miss a flight? am i going to be late to a doctor's appointment? guide dogs for the blind based in san rafael, recently found 83% of their clients reported being denied rides. now, those riders today demanding that uber and lyft implement a zero tolerance policy for drivers who violate company policy. uber has released a statement saying in part, quote, our policies prohibit drivers from denying service because of a rider's service, animal or assistive device, and we are committed to
6:06 am
implementing technology and policies that help make transportation more accessible. now we reached out to lyft and did not hear back. this time, they previously issued this statement from our investigative units, work that says in part, quote, lyft has a strict service animal policy that requires all drivers to accommodate passengers traveling with service animals. and we take any allegation of this nature very seriously. there is no place for any form of discrimination on our platform, and we ask that riders report issues immediately. now, as far as the rallies are concerned, there is one that begins at 10:00 this morning in front of uber's headquarters here in the city. that will be followed by another rally outside of lyft's headquarters that starts at 130. now, we have also previously reported that the united states department of justice is looking into these claims. live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right. thank you very much. ginger. and as ginger mentioned, our

final three weeks before election day, vice president harris, now set for a sit down interview on fox news tomorrow after appealing to undecided voters and one of the swingiest counties of swing state pennsylvania, erie county, you are a pivot county. the vice president played clips of former president trump. the worst people are the enemies from within, the enemy from within. talking about using the military to handle what he called radical left lunatics on election day, he's talking about that he considers anyone who doesn't support him or who will not bend to his will. an enemy of our country. the former president's running mate, ohio senator jd vance, defended those military comments. is it a justifiable use of those assets if they're rioting and looting and burning cities down to the ground? of course, it is. while mr. trump

was also in pennsylvania at a town hall calling vice president harris dangerous and talking immigration and the economy, you've been eaten alive with inflation, and all i'm doing is getting you back to even. the former president cut off questioning after two audience members needed medical attention in the warm room, and instead listened to music with the crowd. he'll rally tonight in atlanta, while vice president harris is set for a radio town hall in detroit with host charlamagne tha god. her latest effort to target support among black men. a key demographic where former president trump has made some gains and the harris campaign is rolling out new policy proposals, including loans for black entrepreneurs and money for training programs. that is, polling shows her ahead with black male voters, but by lower margins than past democratic nominees. and polls are consistently showing former president trump outperforming with men of all races. marcus,

when you look overall, they're pretty much neck and neck right now. all right. thank you alice. well you know voters over in oakland this november, they will decide whether to recall the city's mayor. later today, mayor sheng thao is expected to address the city council on the state of the state. a state of the city, i should say. i'm sorry. now, before that, supporters of mayor thao, they're set to gather to fight against the initiative to recall her from office. community leaders in oakland's chinatown plan to highlight what organizers describe as the mayor's public safety work. meanwhile, recall supporters blame the mayor for the rise in crime in the city. and earlier this year, the fbi raided the house of the mayor, which added to the calls for her to step down. a separate rally is in favor of that. recall is scheduled for later today. happening now. the search is on for a man who tried to steal a private plane in the north bay. sonoma county officials say on sunday morning they received reports of a man pictured here who opened the door to a plane

renovate it. yeah, because it's not up to standard. not to your standards. 619 right now trending this morning we're getting a peek inside a modern day marvel. yeah. so tomorrow, marking the partial reopening of the grand egyptian museum in cairo. this is near the famed pyramids in giza. so it's a project more than a decade in the making. that museum sits on a plot the size of nearly 80 football fields. the cost $1 billion to complete. yeah, so it's going to house statues of pharaohs. among many of the artifacts there. a leading egyptologist says that the museum will be unlike anything currently in existence. you will see the object for the first time in an incredible way. you can go around each object, and it will capture the hearts of everyone. i'm excited just listening to him talk about it, right? so the museum officials expect to attract get this more than 4000 visitors a day. that'll be cool. wow. i think that will be pretty cool. i was

just at the british museum. their museum over there. and the egyptian room was to me the most fascinating room there. so i can only imagine what that one would be like. i stayed at the luxor once. you did. not the same. fascinating too. there's the rosicrucian egyptian museum in san jose right here. get a little taste of it right there. there you go. don't have to travel that far. and if you're going to stay here, layer up. yeah, it's going to be a nice afternoon. it starts out chilly and we're looking across the bay area where we're right now mostly in the 50s. as you're stepping out the door, it's 57 in san jose and in san francisc, walnut creek, we're down to 53 right now and 55 in san mateo. if you're going to the coastline today, heads up that there will be a beach hazard statement in effect. and we're seeing some of those waves at about 9 to 10ft. and it's also there's been the risk of rip currents and sneaker waves as far as our valleys today. it's going to be really nice, beautiful 77 in san jose

6:23 am
at 8 to 9:00 in parts of the north bay, and east bay, and then throughout the afternoon, it's clearing out once again as those rain chances go down. if you do see any rain, it looks like it's going to be maybe a few one hundredths of an inch of rain. unfortunately, that's not going to be enough to help us as we go toward the end of the week. the wind will pick up, the humidity will drop, and that will increase our fire danger. so there will be a fire weather watch in effect for the bay area starting on thursday and continuing into saturday, and some of those gusts for some of the hills may reach 40 to 50mph. and temperatures will be warming up for the weekend will be in the mid 80s on saturday. and mike, you're checking on the recovery for the nimitz. yeah. and it has fully recovered right here. southbound 880 right at 66. we had on the shoulder activity after a disabled vehicle had to be removed from lanes. there was traffic bunching up there. but now everything is moving smoothly from the bay bridge all the way down in toward hayward where we see slowing typical. also, westbound 80 shows more build

for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we want to get you caught up on that weather for today. what you can expect as you head outside. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures. and what we can expect across the bay area today. some changes coming forward. yes, we have a lot of changes over the next few days. but today, a typical fall day where it starts out cool and shapes up to be a really nice and mild afternoon. right now we are seeing temperatures in the low 50s for parts of the east bay. danville right now is at 52 degrees 53. in martinez. we're in the upper 40s in some spots in parts of the north bay where santa rosa, it is 48 degrees. but then take a look at our highs for this afternoon. a nice little warm up with temperatures ranging from 60s near the coast to low 80s for the inland valleys. we'll talk about rain chances tomorrow and a fire danger ahead. all of that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. laura thank you very much. kari. it is 632 right now. the fremont fire department investigating what caused a

driver behind the wheel of a tesla to crash into an apartment building, which caught fire today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from the scene this morning. do we know anything else about the driver? we are in touch with the fremont police department. we are still trying to confirm whether or not the driver survived this crash that took place behind me here at this apartment complex in fremont, near the intersection of warm springs and south grimmer. that's not far from the bart station. if you're familiar with this area, our own pete suratos, who is on the scene last night, says he was told the driver was still in the car and there was no obvious attempt to immediately pull him out, suggesting that the driver might not have survived the crash. so, as you can see behind me, there's still some damage. there's this metal pole that was knocked down when the car careened through here, and then it went into the side of the building there, where you see the black boards are now up some workers were out here overnight fixing the damage. so that's all that is left of what we, you know, saw from overnight. this is what it looked like after the crash. the white tesla slammed
6:34 am
into the first floor apartment building last night around 545, then caught fire. the fire department briefly evacuated the complex while they extinguished the flames. as again, as pete reported last night, first responders on the scene did not confirm the condition of the driver, but again, pete was told the driver was still in the car. pete did speak with a woman who was driving on this road at the time of the crash. she says the driver of the tesla was speeding and nearly hit her before crashing into this building. and then he just started coming at me. it was like 100 miles an hour, and he was swerving all the cars and i was just like, oh, and i don't know, it happened so quick. i just knew it was a white tesla. i don't think it's really processed yet. i mean, i'm nervous, just thank god god was with me. that's all i can say. no one inside the building was hurt. the fire department again investigating the cause of this crash. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, today in the bay. thank you for the latest, bob. today marks day two in the high profile murder trial of a local

doctor peter chin-hong says in california, whooping cough is reaching its highest levels in a decade. he says lack of people with updated vaccinations is contributing to the rise. not everyone has gotten it. particularly in babies. it does take a lot of shots in the beginning of since birth. so about five shots in the first six years. and because of that, it requires frequent visits. and that may not be easy for everyone, particularly during the pandemic. i think a lot of people weren't able to get their kids up to date on immunizations. doctor chin-hong says adults can receive antibiotics once diagnosed but remain infected for a period of time. he also says handwashing and masks can prevent catching whooping cough. well, later this week, the fire danger returns to the bay area with strong winds expected today in the bay's. kris sanchez joins us now with more on who this will really

impact. so this will be for most of the bay area. we will be under a fire weather watch starting thursday through most of the weekend. so it will be a stressful weekend for people who are concerned about their insurance coverage. let's start with a look at the areas under that watch. we're talking all of the bay area, including san francisco and even the shorelines of san francisco and the peninsula. a different warning out of nevada county in the sierra about insurance. this gentleman, an 85 year old veteran who works as a volunteer search and rescue team member, lost his home and lost his cats in a house fire and sadly, that fire happened just weeks after his insurance dropped him, citing wildfire risk. profit is more important than people. profit is what counts to the insurance people, and they don't care that it's protects people. it helps them, helps them get through this and that's why i

would like to see the state take over the fire insurance. how? sadly, mr. fowler isn't alone in this situation. according to state data, insurance companies dropped nearly 242,000 policies in 2021. more than 186,000in 2020, and more than a quarter million policies were dropped in 2019. and we don't even have the data for the last three years. now, our consumer team created a plan for you in case you're dropped. first, take immediate action. open all mail you get from your insurance companies. don't bury your head because often they only give you 75 days notice. shop around to see if other insurance companies will cover you. and that could mean going through an independent insurance broker who can find smaller, lesser known companies. and then your last resort will be the california fair plan, which has to take everybody who has dropped. it is expensive and it only provides basic fire

coverage, but it's better than nothing. so knowing that safety net is imperfect, it makes watching that forecast a lot more stressful. kari so who's most at risk here? yeah, and so it's october, november. those are months that are prime wildfire months where we see the offshore winds and the low humidity. and now we have a storm system approaching that's going to create some gusty wind. initially. it's going to bring in a chance of spotty showers, but unfortunately it's not going to be enough to reduce our wildfire danger. so once that low moves off towards the east, we'll start to see high pressure developing to our west and the pressure gradient between these two pressure systems will create a very strong flow of that air across the bay area that will be blowing offshore, which tends to be much drier and also looks to be very gusty. so here's what we're expecting going into thursday as well as the weekend. a fire weather watch will be in effect starting on thursday, as some of our hills and some of
6:40 am
those higher elevations could see gusts over 50mph. the relative humidity could drop as low as 15% and will also be low during the overnight hours. and we are now at the time of the year where we are very dry. and a look at the drought monitor shows that all of northern california is abnormally dry. that means the vegetation is as dry as it can get, and then you add in a wind and low humidity and unfortunately, any fires that spark could spread very quickly. so we'll continue to monitor that. heading over to mike now you're tracking the traffic. yeah. what's new now and next. what's new. no new alerts. that's the good news. what's now bay bridge crossing bay crossing over here from richmond to san rafael, getting more traffic volume. you see that on the sensors? we've shown that slowing through richmond and then eases by about mid span. westbound, you see westbound is your commute direction for most of these routes here, including a west down the east shore freeway toward the backup at the bay bridge. what's next overnight? same thing as last night. this full closure scheduled for
6:41 am
eastbound highway 37 off of 101 heading over toward atherton. that segment will be closed until they clear for the next morning. this morning, it was cleared before 6 a.m, but it has been on the grid approved until possibly 10 a.m, so we'll continue to track any changes. there's your alternate laid out in the yellow. there. also, westbound 92 will have crews again this morning as you travel west from highway 90 to highway 82. that's el camino real. watch for landscaping work and be careful. give those crews some space back to you. good advice. thanks, mike. well, this is exciting. more pandas for the united states. up next, while san francisco pushes to secure funding for their own, we're going to show you how one zoo already getting ready to receive a pair of its own. and we are three weeks, exactly 21 days away from election day. the latest from the campaign trail. and as we close out hispanic heritage month, we sit down with one of the best players on the 49ers. the reason he believes we should celebrate culture diversity every day of the year.
