but now, it's mr. trump who is the oldest in this race at 78. democrats trying to cast doubt on his mental acuity, including harris' running mate, tim walz. >> he's confused. nearly 80-year-old man. >> a recent ad showing mr. trump appearing to slur his words. >> the former president has been off his game. >> reporter: and political opponents highlighting moments like this one -- >> he was asking her all these -- they only take -- they don't take like i do. anybody wants to go, go what the hell difference does it make. they have -- and how -- how dishonest was abc. >> reporter: mr. trump, deploying his own line of attack, challenging the 59-year-old vice president to a cognitive test in a late night post this week, suggesting there could be something very wrong with her. her doctor called her health excellent. the same word mr. trump's doctor used to describe his health in a shorter letter released last year. the trump campaign says former president trump has more energy and more stamina than anyone in politics, adding, he's the

it's word salad. but there seems to be a concerted effort really in recent days by the harris campaign to go after trump right there on this issue of age and cognition. >> yeah. part of it is base on the numbers here, right? look at the polling. back when president biden was still in the race, mr. trump held a 29 point edge on this question of the mental fitness and physical thoelt be president. but fast forward to this fall and our nbc news poll shows vice president harris is holding a 20-point lead on the same question. that is a swing of nearbily 50 points. to your point, savannah, the harris campaign only started ramping up this strategy in the last couple of weeks. it is something we are likely to see more of until election day, savannah. >> hallie, thank you very much. also this morning, there is a big chill in the air. tens of millions up and down the east coast and across the great lakes are waking up to the coldest temperatures so far this fall season. al is standing by with the first look at the forecast. sweaters are out, al. >> did you hear that thermostat clicking.

puerto rico as well will have to worry. we'll continue to monitor this. but right now looks like systems are going to keep this thing to our south, guys. >> al, thank you. we want to turn to the on going clean-up and recovery from hurricane milton, six days after the storm made landfall, many parts of florida are just beginning to dig out from the damage. some areas are experiencing active flooding. and power outages remain a major focus. nbc's priya sridhar is in st. pete beach with the very latest there. hi, priya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. yeah. this neighborhood in st. petersburg beach took a district district hit. you can see destruction everywhere. behind me you can see piles of trash and debris. mattresses and furniture. this is really a glimpse of the bigger picture of devastation and destruction that we're seeing across the region. this morning nearly 185 thousand households here in florida are still without power. this as communities down here begin the process of rebuilding.

this morning, more and more people returning to destroyed homes and tattered communities. jay hager and his wife own timeshares at this beach club. >> i have been coming here for 40 years. never seen anything close to this. >> reporter: the island permanently altered, parts split in two by milton's wind and storm surge. further north along the river, flooding persists. >> i need power, and we don't have a roof. people don't have homes. >> reporter: milton has passed, but the water continues to rise. >> in some areas, we will not see peaks for four weeks after the storm. >> reporter: these communities just part of the ongoing aftermath of milton. with so many still without power, line men working nonstop to get the lights back on. >> it is an effort that will not stop until every single customer's power is restored. >> reporter: milton also shutting down port tampa and knocking out power to gas

as israel prepares to retaliate for iran's now two-week-old missile attack, the office of prime minister, benjamin netanyahu telling nbc news we listened to the opinions of the united states, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interests. that response coming on the heels of a "washington post" report, citing two anonymous officials familiar with the matter saying netanyahu told the biden administration he's willing to strike military, rather than oil or nuclear facilities in iran. just a day after the u.s. announced it's sending the thad missile defense system to israel to bolster air defenses. >> we found our defense forces stretching from south to north to east to west. >> reporter: israel moving forward with dual ground offensives both in lebanon, targeting hezbollah, and battling hamas in gaza. now described as a living hell. the u.n. human rights office says tens of thousands of palestinians are trapped in the

redell. we're here in fremont where the fremont fire department is still trying to figure out what caused a white tesla to crash into this apartment building behind me here at warm springs and grimmer. you can see the bent metal pole there in the foreground. and in the background is the damage that has since been boarded up. this happened around 545 last night when the tesla went inside the building. it caught fire. the fire department briefly evacuated the complex while they extinguished the flames. first responders on the scene did not confirm the condition of the driver, but our own pete suratos was told the driver was still in the car and there was no obvious attempt to pull them out. pete also spoke with a woman who was driving on the road at the time of the crash. she says the driver of the tesla was speeding and nearly hit her before crashing into this building. today marks day two in the high profile murder trial of a local tech executive. nina momeni is accused of stabbing and killing cash app founder bob lee in april of 2023. during opening statements yesterday, the lead prosecutor told jurors a knife was found near the scene and a lab found his dna on the handle.

the popular panda exhibit has been without these cute black and white balls of fur. which draws 2 million annually. after the national zoo sent home its three pandas on china's request. >> i like that the pandas are coming back because i have missed the pandas. >> reporter: in preparation for its new residents, the zoo has been renovating its facilities, to ensure a long-term and stable source of edible bamboo. with improvements like new climbing structures, rocks, hammocks and pools. >> everyone loves pandas. and people come from all over the world to see pandas. >> reporter: the first bears china has sent to washington in 24 years. the third generation in his family to live at the zoo. >> his grandparents came here in 2000. his mom was our only female club cub born here at national zoo. >> reporter: it was 1972 when the first pandas arrived after president nixon's historic trip
