mayor breed and the board of supervisors made a mess. we're back at 8:35 with beloved actor, writer, producer and my friend, jason segel. he made us off in "how i met your mother "and "forgetting sarah marshal." but many say his role in "shrinking" is some of his best role yet. jason plays a therapist coming to terms with his own grief. take a look. >> i'm going out. can i get the keys?
8:37 am
>> yeah, yeah. giving my little girl the keys, huh? >> i would love if you could throw me those without trying to make some father-daughter moment out of this. do you think you can? >> i know i can't. >> okay. >> you get to choose, though, between me making a video of catching the keys and a tight embrace -- >> get your phone out. >> i love how this show weaves grief and humor and all the things, and it just bears repeating, people are saying this is your best work yet. think about all the stuff you have done and you are standing on the mountain top. does it feel that way to you? >> i guess the dream is that each new thing is your best work yet. right? that's an aspirational goal. but i do think i appreciate being 44 years old all of a sudden. when i made "forgetting sara marshall," for example, the
8:38 am
rawest form of vulnerability i could think of was full frontal nudity. that's a 25-year-old guy. and this is, i think, a more sophisticated version of vulnerability that you only achieve from life stuff. you know, saying i'm scared or realizing you let your daughter down and trying to earn back that trust, these are new to me and exciting to explore. >> that's so cool. it feels real-lifey when you talk about these things. >> yeah. i was really influenced by james brooks growing up. those movies, broadcast news, "terms of endearment," they're all the things. laughing your way through grief and crying your way through good moments. even in one scene, some of those movies just took you on a full exploration of humanity.
8:39 am
we try to do that on this show. >> i think it's so school. i also like your broness with harrison ford and how you were afraid of him or didn't know if he was going to like you. >> our relationship off screen mirrors our relationship on screen. i desperately wanted approve. he dolls it out in such small doses. it means the world to me. every time he says, good job kid, i'm like, oh, he likes me. >> did you ever imagine you would be working with this guy? this is a guy we watch up growing and admiring. >> i didn't. you make an offer to somebody like harrison ford just to tell your friends you did. and then he said yes. and then there is this panic, oh, my god. harrison ford is going to show up. we better fix the script. i think he's doing some of his best work. >> isn't that so interesting? because he said that, didn't he, that this is some of the best work that he's done. >> you know, we all deeply care about it. that's a really rare thing for, everyone in a cast to be aligned. we show up at the set to give it our all each day, and it shows.
8:40 am
>> you know what's cool about you? you have reached so many mountaintops. when you were at, "how i met your mother" it was like what could be better than this? you did something so interesting. a lot of people would have just taken a big dive into hollywood. but you pulled up stakes and moved away from all that. why did you do that? >> well, i mean, that's a long question. but i think i was having a really roaring 20s on "how i met your mother." i was also writing a bunch of movies that were successful and doing well. but i wasn't doing a lot of personal check-ins because i was so busy. you know? i was working pretty much every day of the year, doing "how i met your mother," writing a movie and shooting it during the break, going back to "how i met your mother." and i realized art is supposed to be a reflection of what you are going through, and i wasn't going through much life-wise. at 30 years old, why am i still making movies about being afraid

of girls. i'm a successful man. actually ? what are you i'm not afraid of meeting girls anymore. i moved out of l.a. and i started to ask myself questions like what do you actually like? what are you actually thinking about right now? who do you want to be as a performer and an artist? so i started writing about different things. it is weird. it is like the end of an m. night shyamalan movie where it all makes sense. i care about dramatic themes. i'm also good at comedy. how i do reconcile those? >> we're waiting for season two. >> you're going to love it. i'm really proud of my fast. each one of these actors could be the lead in their own show. >> wow! >> yeah. and every combination could be its own buddy comedy.n catch th "shrinking". >> and i'm going to miss you when you're gone. i want you to know, these

"i'm mark farrell. i'm running for mayor because san francisco deserves better." "i'm ready to deliver that change on day one." mark farrell. a proven leader with the experience we need.

actor. there is a kind of innate theatricality to it. it is gorgeous. when i watch that clip, all i remember is the prosthetic ball cap and how sweaty it was that day in hungary. they have to get some bits of sweat out. so however sort of slick he's trying to look in that bit, all i can remember is the sweat. >> you go for it. it is like an actor's playground. you have prosthetics. you have disguises. when you stand in the mirror and look at yourself when you are all done up, is that totally bizarre? >> there are surreal moments. >> yeah. there were a few of these looks. the prosthetics get stuck on to your chest. when the top was off, it looked very bizarre. but what i love about the piece -- what am i doing?
8:47 am
what i love about the piece is it really invests. some of these films, you see people really invest in the artistry of the artists and all the intricacies. i spoke to one of the prosthetic artists who described how many of those spy agencies do use that now because there is all the facial recognition. >> okay. so the spy world is catching up with hollywood? >> it is. >> well, i heard you got into the research. you even worked on your spy craft and walked through london tracking people. >> this is -- yeah. so i did a couple of some days' work with our sort of military and espionage adviser, which i think has got to be one of the greatest job titles, and he taught me all these techniques about how you can walk down the street and look at reflections in car windows and mirrors to
