now. good morning, and thanks for joining us on this thursday, i'm jessica layton. well, election day is in just 19 days, and the nominees are doing all they can to reach those remaining undecided voters. vice president kamala harris speaking to the conservative audience of fox news, while former president donald trump addressed a town hall of all-women voters. nbc's alice barr joins me now live from washington, d.c. alice, good morning. this interview was one of the toughest that the vice president has ever faced. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. no question. the interview was combative right from the start. the vice president was pressed multiple times on the issue of immigration. she said the focus has been on repairing a broken system and brought up the bipartisan border bill that was blocked by republicans. she insisted that her presidency would be different than president biden's, and at one point she was asked if she felt donald trump's supporters were stupid. >> are they misguided?

the 50%? are he this stupid? >> oh, god, i would never say that about the american people. and, in fact, if you listen to donald trump, if you watch any of his rallies, he's the one who tends to demean and belittle and diminish. >> reporter: former president donald trump for his part addressed women at his town hall on fox news, where he again voiced his support for in-vitro fertilization, giving himself a new nickname. >> oh, i want to talk about ivf. i'm the father, i'm the father of ivf. >> reporter: vice president harris told reporters she found those comments bizarre, saying mr. trump should take responsibility for reproductive rights restrictions across the country. meanwhile, at a rally in pennsylvania overnight, ohio senator jd vance gave his most direct answer yet on the question of whether or not his running mate, former president trump, lost the 2020 election. >> i've answered this question

directly a million times. no, i think there are serious question problems in 2020. so, did donald trump lose the election? not by the words that i would use. >> reporter: vice president harris will be campaigning today in wisconsin, while former president trump is expected in new york city tonight for the al smith charity dinner. jessica? >> alice, thank you. now to more breaking news this morning. tragedy out of the music industry. liam payne, who was a member of the british pop band one direction has died. authorities tell our sister station telemundo that he fell from a third-floor hotel balcony in argentina on wednesday. now, according to the emergency health services there, police were called to the hotel in buenos aires for a report of a quote aggressive man, possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. tributes are now pouring in for the 31-year-old. charlie puth saying, quote, liam was always so kind to me. i cannot believe he is gone.

paris hillhilton alshilton also condolences. also breaking overnight, the u.s. air force has once again bombed the houthi rebels in yemen. defense secretary lloyd austin said in a statement that the strikes targeted underground weapons storage facilities. for a year now, the houthis have attacked shipping vessels in the red sea and the gulf of aden, all in response to the war in gaza. one u.s. official saying, for the first time, b-2 stealth bombers were used to strike the houthis. there is no word yet this morning on casualties. back here in the u.s., in los angeles, new developments in the case of eric and lyle menendez who are serving life sentences for killing their parents. now, more than a dozen relatives are calling for the brothers' release in light of new evidence

that's under review. nbc's liz kreutz has the details. >> reporter: it's the latest twist to the knotorious menende brothers. >> their actions, while tragic, were the desperate response of two boys trying to survive the unspeakable cruel of their father. >> reporter: among those supporting eric and lyle menendez, the 92-year-old sister of kitty menendez who was murdered along with her husband jose. >> with the understanding we now have about abuse and ptsd, there is no doubt if my mind that their sentencing would have been very different. >> reporter: relatives of both kitty and jose arguing new evidence under review by the l.a. district attorney backs the brothers' long-standing claim they acted in self-defense after years of abuse by their father. >> i grew up knowing and feeling something wasn't right. the feeling in their house and

the father-son interactions were just off. >> reporter: the brothers currently serving life without parole getting renewed attention, sparked by the popular new netflix series. but the family is split. an attorney for kitty's brother says he believes his nephews were motivated by greed and wants them to remain behind bars. does your client believe the brothers' claim that they acted in self-defense after years of sexual and physical abuse? >> milton anderson does not believe that. but, should those allegations have been true, it doesn't excuse what they did to their parents, and it doesn't excuse the murders that they committed. >> reporter: and i spoke with the l.a. district attorney. he tells me that he has not yet made a decision about resentencing but that he does believe the brothers' claims they were molested, and he does not believe they should spend the rest of their life in prison. he hopes to make a decision about his recommendation within the next ten days. back to you. >> all right, liz, thank you. a new jersey police detective was shot and killed in

her own home on tuesday. monica moseley was a sergeant with the cumberland county office. colleagues responded to reports of a break-in and found moseley dead. police did detain another person who was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. that person has not been identified, and no charges have been filed yet. investigators have not revealed any possible motives in that shooting. now to texas and the death row case that has sparked outrage. a state board has denied robert roberson's request for clemency. he could become the first person in the country to be executed for a case of shaken baby syndrome, a diagnosis that is now being questioned in this particular case. his execution is scheduled for later today. in fact, the detective who arrested him is even calling for the execution to be halted. roberson's lawyers are asking the supreme court to intervene. to the weather now. it is a frosty start to the morning in a lot of our areas, but warmer temperatures are on

the way. angie lassman is tracking it all. good morning. >> good morning to you. we of course are waking up to alerts once again. the third morning in a row for a lot of these places where you need that extra layer. temperatures ranging from the 30s to the 40s as far south as tallahassee. we've got 41 in atlantic city, 39 in chicago. the jacket needed even by afternoon, you'll be able to peel it off, but some spots will remain cooler than normal. look at minneapolis today, 71 today, we're feeling more like, say, september than october across this region. that spreads a little farther to the east. chicago will top out at 69 degrees, then the gradual warmup and milder conditions settle in across the northeast and great lakes. as we get into the weekend, mid-70s by the time the weekend wraps up. meanwhile, out west, a couple storm systems are going to leave us with heavy rain and snow. we'll see periods of really heavy rain and flooding potential will be there in new

subscriptions and memberships. the new rule will also require businesses to obtain consumer consent before charging at the end of a free trial, changing memberships or auto renewals. now the ftc says they get around 70 complaints every day related to the issue of canceling subscriptions. the number has increased dramatically in recent years. now, on to amazon. amazon announced yesterday three agreements worth more than $500 million to develop nuclear energy. now this is all about smr, the small modular reactors. it's a type of nuclear reactor that is much smaller and easier to produce and has the third of the energy of a traditional reactor. google and microsoft have announced similar investments. with the rollout of a.i., these tech giants need big energy. but they also will have net-zero carbon targets, and nuclear

energy allows them to do that. >> thanks so much. it is no secret that social media has helped to play a big role in discovering new places to dine out, even making some restaurants go viral. what if your latest like turned out to be a recipe from a.i.? nbc's maya eaglin explains. >> reporter: a craw soissant. a buffalo wing the size of a table? offering on instagram. on the website, they say it's the home of your hounreal flavo. this restaurant does not exist. they have over 70,000 followers. and every single photo looks like it's a.i. those mouth-watering meals a.i. generated. maybe it was the jeff bezos behind the bar that gave it away. but people online are confused.
