if you have one. we want to make sure people have flashlights with fresh batteries instead of candles for safety reasons. right now at six, we are hours away from a red flag warning and possible power outages making way for looming fire danger for the bay area. our team tracking the incoming conditions, plus those shutoffs. today marks 35 years since the loma prieta earthquake rocked the bay area. but are you ready for the next big one? the steps being taken today to make sure all californians are prepared vying for new voters. vice president kamala harris sparring with fox in a sit down interview. this as trump holds an all female town hall. we are live from washington with more as election day nears. with now just 19 days to go. this is today in the bay.
6:01 am
good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. a lot to talk about this morning. first we begin with a live look across the bay area. all eyes on this dry and windy weather expected to take hold of the bay area with fire danger looming. a red flag warning goes into effect later tonight. as a result, pg&e is warning more than 7000 customers in six bay area counties that they could lose power starting today through saturday. the utility says there is time to prepare now. it says it has increased staffing and set up staging areas for quick repairs. these crew members will be patrolling by foot by air, making sure that there is nothing on the lines, no vegetation, no debris that could potentially spark when we turn power back on. meteorologist kari hall of course tracking when those high winds are expected to move in. i know you're tracking the power shut off outlook, too, for us. yes.
6:02 am
so these are the areas that may have gotten those alerts from pg&e, where you may have to prepare for days without power. as we deal with these high winds and low humidity. and so if you are under those this, this county, under those psps watches, you will have already received an alert from pg&e. if you're signed up for that information, but it's going to start to become very windy as we go into this afternoon. into the evening. first near the coast and into the inland areas later on tonight. look at how strong these gusts will be for oakland. 38 mile per hour winds at midnight. and it could be as high as 40 to 45mph through the delta, as well as through the bay and into the day tomorrow. it's still going to be quite gusty into the afternoon, but also with the low humidity and the extremely dry relative humidity that's going to create the conditions where if we do have a spark, it could spread very rapidly. so we're debuting a redesigned weather app
6:03 am
experience on the nbc bay area app. it is a great way to get local weather your way from the people you know. so be sure to download the nbc bay area app today. and speaking of your phones, let's talk about later this morning because you should receive an earthquake alert on your phone at 1017. now don't worry. don't get alarmed. this is just a drill. today is california. great. this is the great california shakeout. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from hayward this morning with what we can expect. and kris you're actually standing there on the hayward fault. i'm pretty close to it. this is the historic hayward city hall. and i wanted to bring you here because i didn't realize that the hayward fault actually runs right underneath this historic building. it is the reason why it is now shuttered and no longer in use. there's seismic shifting that's happening. and so that building is unusable. the interesting thing is that about in the 60s, they had to move all city operations to the city center, which then got damaged in the loma prieta earthquake. so
6:04 am
earthquake faults really just affecting every part of our lives, especially here in hayward. that was again damaged in 1969. they're now in a safe building that is seismically fit. but speaking of the of the loma prieta fault, in which that building was damaged, people were experiencing the what that earthquake felt like at the california academy of sciences. this is a simulator that really recreates that 6.9 earthquake along the san andreas fault that rocked the bay area 35 years ago. they also can simulate the earthquake that rocked san francisco in 1906. it makes you realize just how much you move. you know when these quakes hit and you just you think about what it was like for people who were experiencing it live. and you just realize, like, what? what were they thinking? it must have felt like the end of the world. now the cal academy shake
6:05 am
house is open to the public every day, but also today, uc berkeley is hosting a simulator and that is offering tours of the hayward fault on campus, along with other offerings. mayor london breed and congressman kevin mullin will present a proposed earthquake resilience act at pier nine in san francisco, and bart will trigger the shake alert app in order to test the emergency response that is happening at 1017. that is also when we are supposed to get that shake alert warning on our phones, which should buy us enough time to drop, cover and drop and cover right? so we have lots of information about how you can be prepared for earthquakes on nbc bay area dot com, but definitely interesting. you can see the movement of these faults around the bay area. i'm going to post a link to a walking tour in case you find yourself in an area. i mean, sometimes it's just a, you know, a matter of like an offset of the sidewalk, but it's still interesting to see the power of
6:06 am
those quakes, even when they're dormant. yeah. always good to keep this in mind, because we know it could happen at any moment. thanks, kris. our other top story at six, the race for the white house. both presidential hopefuls are making plays for unlikely allies. vice president kamala harris sparred with fox news in a sitdown interview, and former president trump participated in an all woman town hall where he called himself, quote, the father of ivf. today, in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington this morning. alice, both candidates really getting out there. they're returning to the campaign trail again today. yes, laura. today, former president trump will be in new york for the traditional al smith charity dinner tonight. vice president harris is breaking with tradition. she's skipping that and instead will be out campaigning in battleground wisconsin after battling it out in a sometimes heated fox news interview. i'm offering a plan to deal with affordable. vice president harris, in her first formal
6:07 am
interview with fox news, making her pitch to republicans hesitant to vote for former president trump. let me be very clear. my presidency will not be a continuation of joe biden's presidency. in testy exchanges over immigration, that 85% of apprehensions. i'm not finished. the vice president zeroed in on the bipartisan border bill. former president trump opposed. if a border security had actually been passed nine months ago, it would be nine months that we would have had more border agents at the border. and defended her shift from more liberal positions during her 2019 presidential bid. i do not believe in decriminalizing border crossings, and i've not done that as vice president. i will not do that as president. the sit down followed a pennsylvania appearance with former republican officials, including onetime gop congressman adam kinzinger, calling out donald trump's rhetoric as he appeared in a fox news town hall with all women voters working to make up ground
6:08 am
with female voters. the former president stressed his support for in vitro fertilization. i'm the father of ivf, so i want to hear this question. we're totally in favor of ivf and called some states abortion laws too tough. they're too tough, too tough, and those are going to be redone. former president trump also appeared in a univision town hall voicing support for legal immigration. we just want them to come in legally. while not backing off false claims about haitian migrants in springfield, ohio. vice president harris slammed former president trump's comments on ivf, saying he should take responsibility for restrictions on reproductive rights in states across the country, including some threats to ivf that we have seen. former president trump has said that if elected, he would make the government or insurance companies foot the bill for ivf. back to you. all right. 19 days to go. a lot to cover. alice,
6:09 am
thanks so much. 608 this morning we now know more about a man and a woman who died after being swept into the ocean by a large surf in oahu's north shore earlier this week. we know that man now is 63 year old brian kunec, who was from hollister. now, leaders say that two women and kunec were on the beach and not in the water. this is when those waves came up, pulling them all into the surf. those waves, 6 to 8ft high. this is when that incident happened. now, first responders got all three of them out of the water. but one woman and kunec died. that other woman is in critical condition. that undertow there can be so deadly. well, let's take a live look outside. can you make that out? the golden gate bridge there at a distance this morning. kari has got a look at our forecast. we've got some concerns in the weather department. absolutely. it's going to be very windy these next few days, and the will start to gradually feel the wind picking up as we go into the afternoon. but overall we're looking at sunshine and in san jose, we'll start out our morning right at about 60
6:10 am
degrees at 9:00. at 1:00 it's 70 degrees and only making it into the low 70s really comfortable for today. and we'll also see slightly cooler temperatures for much of the rest of the bay area, with dublin's high up to 73 degrees 71 in san francisco and upper 70s for much of the north bay. so we'll talk about what's ahead with that weekend forecast and also that red flag warning in a few minutes. mike's been tracking where we can find lower gas prices. yeah. kari. well, we had a little sprinkles yesterday for some, so maybe you need a car wash in concord. you can head to clayton gas and wash on clayton road for the bay's best price, which continues to be 3.89. of course, it costs more if you want to get the car wash there. a different wash in the south bay. it's the best buy at 3.99 for cupertino, car wash on north anza boulevard. our third price here. it's the same best as the second in marin county. mill valley's got arco on redwood highway, and i don't know if they have a car wash. i did check google street view. it didn't look like they had that. we'll look over at gasbuddy.com. you choose your station. let's
6:11 am
get out to the roadways where we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic. nice drive. the earlier crash did clear without injuries reported, and now lanes are clear. north 101 at oakland road there on city streets. now the first the backup that was a little more focused is actually looking a lot better now. traffic flowing past the scene. more traffic building, of course. out of the east bay. back to you. backup, indeed. thanks, mike. there's no new plans for the oakland coliseum just yet, but people on social media have some ideas. next, the team, some fans say, could find a temporary home here in the bay area. now that the a's have departed. and the white house says this morning it's reached an important milestone in student loans. let's go out to the futures. we set new records yesterday and well, look at that. we're going to set opening records this morning. you know what? there is just two weeks until halloween and google is trying to predict the top costumes of the year. do you have any guesses? i do a few. you do? okay. well hold tight. we'll talk about them in just a bit. stick around, because we're going to tell you who they're
6:13 am
the city hall insiders spend record high budgets. but our problems get worse. they say this is the best that we can do. they blame the system, but they built the system. i have a plan to change it. with accountability and rooting out corruption, we can tackle our housing and drug crisis, clear the tent encampments and bring our businesses back. are you ready to stop settling and start demanding more? join me in changing city hall.

60s to mid 70s. a really nice one, but it will start to get windy this evening. we're watching out for that fire danger and looking ahead to your weekend forecast coming up. and we're looking at the bridge, the richmond bridge heading over to san rafael, picking up the volume here, slowing down as you exit the eastshore freeway and head west across that span. meanwhile, the other approaches through contra costa county looking like they're building up as well. we'll show you the pattern. i'm looking at walnut creek right now. well, good morning. very happy thursday to you. new records on the stock market. second time this week. white house just announced more than a million americans have had their loans forgiven under the public service program that forgives loans after ten years for things like firefighters, teachers and police officers. netflix in los gatos will report its numbers after the closing bell. this afternoon. its stock up more than 130% in two years, as they're still got some room to run. we'll see. electric car

maker lucid returning to the public market with a secondary offering that is, it's going to raise more money by simply printing up more shares and selling them to investors. hate this because their shares are then diluted. it's like inviting more people to your party after you've ordered the pizza. every person is going to get a thinner slice of pizza. secondary offerings going back to the wel, fairly rare though. you know who does it often. elon musk and tesla after its ipo in 2010, tesla did it again in 2012, 2013, 2019 and 2020. speaking of elon musk is spacex company filed a lawsuit wednesday against the california coastal commission, which is limiting the number of rocket launches. spacex can make from vandenberg air force base. spacex claims commissioners made the restrictions because they're upset at the sort of things that musk tweets, and those commissioners have been critical. obviously, there's a big first amendment question
6:17 am
there, and there's a bigger question does the coastal commission have the authority to stop rocket launches at all? the commission says yes, because spacex is a private company, not nasa. musk, donald trump's largest financial supporter, also continues to poke fun at venture capitalist vinod khosla online. khosla says he's worried about a trump presidency. venture capitalist tim draper meantime, a former nikki haley supporter, said he was undecided, announcing to the world yesterday he had made an important decision. both candidates have their heart in the right place, draper wrote. i am endorsing both candidates. oh wow. thanks, tim. wait till he gets to the ballot box. yeah, as you know, tim, tim has interesting ideas. he's the one who wants to break california into five separate states. so it's always interesting. it's always amusing to hear. yes, yes it is. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, new at 6:00. pop the corks. grab a glass. napa
6:18 am
valley has a new wine region. it's called crystal springs of napa valley. it's located between saint helena and calistoga. according to the chronicle, the alcohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau approved the plan four years after the proposal was submitted. crystal springs is the first new wine region in that area in 13 years. interesting. i'll have to check it out. all right, well, also new for you this morning. many on social media are calling for a slice of tampa bay to come to the bay area following hurricane milton's devastating impact. tropicana stadium, home of the tampa bay rays roof you saw there severely damaged by the storm. a report in the tampa bay times says that the venue won't be ready for opening day in march, which begs for the question where will they play? well, john bowden is a sports reporter over at cbs. he reported this question on x, and some people are suggesting that the rays, the rays hightail it over to oakland, which one user
6:19 am
pointing out that the coliseum is available. another simply posting a picture of the a's logo on the caption. problem solved. the a's are set to play in sacramento next season ahead of their las vegas debut, of course. interesting idea. i think they will work the bay and the bay. there we go. all right, well, this is also trending for you this morning. if you're still trying to figure out the halloween costume you want to do this year, don't look like everyone else. yeah, a lot of people don't want to do that. you might want to stay away from the following that because google is out with their list of predictions for this year's top costumes this year. number one halloween costume search. these days is shrunken head bob. he's there, right there on the left. character gaining a lot of popularity following the new beetlejuice movie, which is now in theaters. second most popular search regan that viral australian breaking competitor from the paris olympics. kind of simple. all you need is that tracksuit, baseball cap and some good news or bad news and cat
6:20 am
nap from poppy playtime rounding out the top three other costumes that made the top ten include dolores, also from beetlejuice, and ray from inside out, and pop star sabrina carpenter. heidi i guess the bangs. i just think, how do you do? sabrina carpenter you put the little lip thing right here or something, maybe, i don't know, drink espresso on. yeah, i just the bangs, that's all i can. you know what i found out? interesting about sabrina carpenter? her aunt is the voice of bart simpson. oh no way, man. yes. nancy cartwright. yeah. nancy cartwright is her aunt. it's her dad's sister. cool. sabrina carpenter, fun facts. maybe bart will do a duet with sabrina. there you go. to get a taste of that. they missed a lot here on today in the bay. all right, well, maybe you'll be playing that on the way to work this morning. it's going to be a nice start to the day. cool. for much of the bay area. but of course we've been talking a lot about the increase in wind and the critical fire danger that we will see. the red flag warning
6:21 am
begins tonight at 11:00. that's when the wind really starts to pick up. and the worst of those high winds will be lasting into early tomorrow morning. the highest risk of seeing the strongest winds will be above 500ft in elevation. a lot of our hills and mountains around the bay area. but this weekend the wind starts to calm down and when we think about how dry the vegetation is, the last significant storm we had with about a half inch of rain was may 4th. so that was a long time ago. and the vegetation is as dry as it can get as our temperatures today. head for the low 70s. it will be 72 for the high in cupertino, 71 in morgan hill, and we're seeing some low to mid seconds for much of the east bay. with oakland's high today, 73 degrees and 79. in antioch near the coast, it's going to be in the mid 60s. daly city, 66 and 70, in san mateo and san francisco, a windy 68 degrees for the outer sunset. the district will be in the low 70s, and the wind will pick up here a little bit sooner than
6:22 am
the rest of the bay area. in the north bay. we're looking at a high of about 77 from napa up to santa rosa. so we are seeing an approaching area of low pressure across the pacific northwest. not much of an impact to our sky condition or rain chances, but that's going to help create that pressure gradient that we'll see and by tonight, the wind increases and the national weather service putting up the red flag warning pretty much for the entire bay area except for the immediate coastline, where relative humidity will be a little bit higher, but it's going to be low for the inland areas. and the criteria for a red flag warning is the relative humidity at 15% or less. and frequent wind gusts over 25mph, both happening at the same time. and we know also that our hills are mountains are very dry and so any sparks could spread a fire very quickly, especially with winds that will be gusting at 2530 five miles per hour. with those strongest wind gusts coming through the delta and
6:23 am
into the coastal areas, we could see some 45 to 50 plus mile per hour winds. so the high fire danger continues throughout the weekend. lots of clear skies, but it's also going to be warming up. and in san francisco, expected to be quite windy the next few days with highs there in the mid to upper 70s for the weekend. mike has that drive out of richmond. you know, a typical slowing as traffic pushes in over to the toll plaza across to the north bay off the east shore freeway, and no surprises for the westbound commute. good news for the eastbound commute. the slowing we saw as the crew working on their electrical work, heading on to the eastbound span. things have cleared up, so the crew must be in place. we'll just note that if you're coming over to richmond, a slower drive bills for the east shore freeway. no surprises here. i'm watching walnut creek. there's a little more slowing heading through walnut creek. pleasant hill, but so far not bad for that portion of contra costa county. we've got more news right after this
6:26 am
saying right now is start with the budget and start early. so this year there will be just 27 days between thanksgiving and christmas. that means three fewer days to shop than you had in years past. while the national retail federation forecast holiday spending could possibly see a 3.5% increase from last year, analysts say that they are seeing what they call stretch theory. that's when shoppers are okay with spending. so as long as they're getting a
6:27 am
good deal, 58% of shoppers actually want to shop and spend more and buy more gifts if they feel like they're getting a good deal. so it's really less about saving that money and keeping the dollars in your pocket and stretching the dollars and stretch theory and kind of getting more bang for your buck. she also recommends stacking your savings by shopping for discounts and using price comparison tools, just to make sure that you're getting the best deal. then you decide to buy use cash back app or the credit card. that can give you some points. therefore, you can get the most bang for your buck. now here are some interesting shopping trends that we're seeing. this is from the rakuten survey. 59% of gen z. they are saying that they'll spend less on others in order to buy something for themselves. 54% of all shoppers downplay how much they spend, and 20% of shoppers say that they buy gifts for people they don't want to buy for. so are you among the list we just talked about? we'll take a look at this survey right
6:28 am
here. we posted it online. they say most people say no, not me. i'm not buying from people i don't want to buy for. so there you have it. but some people say sometimes and then just a few of you are saying, yeah, that's me, laura p.s. it's the season of giving. i give a lot. that's what they're saying. oh, no. you do. yeah, well, thank you. and giving you receipt. yes. hey, we've got a lot more ahead at 630 this morning, including meteorologist kari hall tracking an incoming red flag warning due to high fire danger across the bay area. plus, what does that red flag warning mean for you? i'm ginger conejero saab, live in marin county. pg&e may shut off your power as part of their public safety power shutoffs. we'll give you the latest numbers when we ce back.om

sexual assault charges. and protesters shut down the golden gate bridge in protest. now they're pushing to get those charges dismissed. the reason they claim the da is being unjust. this is today in the ba. and here we go. it's thursday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. want to get right to our top story this morning. the high fire danger across the bay area. we do have live team coverage for you of the upcoming red flag warning. and our meteorologist, kari hall, timing out all of this for us. but first, want to head over to today in the bay's ginger conejero saab with more on how fire crews are preparing for this. ginger. good morning, marcus and laura. fire crews are beefing up their crews and placing equipment in possible red flag warning areas already to prepare for what we are anticipating for high winds in the next coming days. and next coming days. 2017 was a real
6:33 am
learning moment for many people in the north bay here. if you remember the destruction that was left behind by the tubbs fire. that is exactly what fire crews and other agencies are trying to avoid. now, later this morning, we are expecting to hear from pg&e. they're going to speak at around 1030. we expect to get an update from them on possible public safety power shutoffs and its impact here in the bay area. fire crews on the ground here in the north bay are also bracing themselves. it was in october, seven years ago that the tubbs fire broke out, and dozens of people lost their lives. back in 2017, billions of dollars worth of destruction as well. now, spokesperson for santa rosa fire tells us he is optimistic that people now have more situational awareness and preparedness. 2017 really caught a lot of people off guard. the situational awareness wasn't there. the preparedness level
6:34 am
wasn't there. but when you look at an event like today and this week with the red flag warning, you know that we've got additional staffing plans in place. we have a community that understands what alert and warnings are. now, we do have the latest numbers from pg&e as of early this morning, around 20,000 customers in northern california are still within pg&e psps scope. now, that includes around 8000 customers across the bay area. nine counties have been removed from that. psps list, but none here. locally, you can go to pg&e .com/ psps updates to look up your address and see if it is being monitored for a potential power shut off. pg&e warns it is best to prepare now. that means charge your electronics, charge your ev if you have one. make sure you have fresh batteries and flashlights as well. now, just like those fire crews, pg&e says they're
6:35 am
also preparing for this. they've increased their staffing and they've also set up staging areas so that they can respond quickly to any sort of power shutoffs. we're live in mill valley, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. thanks, ginger. well, we know this red flag warning has been coming for quite some time. meteorologist kari hall has been following it for us. and here we are. well, this is the red flag warning that we'll see beginning at 11 p.m. and it's pretty much the entire bay area where we have low humidity and high winds expected going into the next several days. and this is where we'll also see that possibility of the psp s the potential public safety power shut offs under a watch for all of these areas shaded in orange, it's usually the hills elevations above 500ft. and if you've already signed up for those alerts from pg&e, you would have already gotten a notice that you're under that possibility of not having power. here's what to expect. the red flag warning
6:36 am
begins at 11:00, and we will have the worst of those high winds lasting through tomorrow morning. once again, the top risk will be in the hills and this weekend there will be less wind. but it's been a long time since we've had a significant rainfall. not since may fourth. so our vegetation in the hills and some of that dry brush is as dry as it can get. so here's a reminder. we've made it easier for you to follow the weather in your neighborhood with our nbc bay area app, we're debuting a redesigned weather experience. you can download the nbc bay area app today. it's free and available for all smart devices. marcus. thank you. kerry. well, this morning police are searching for a motive of a gruesome discovery led to a double homicide investigation in antioch. officers found the bodies of two people receiving a call from a welfare for a welfare check. this was at a home on fairmont lane yesterday. this is near the delta fair shopping center. police say that a man was arrested after killing
6:37 am
his mother and half brother. officers say that those bodies were in advanced stages of decomposition. so far, there are no word on a motive here. 636 right now. turning now to more legal trouble for sean diddy combs. a woman claims the music mogul raped her in an east bay home. according to a lawsuit filed, it happened in 2018. the woman claims this was in retaliation for comments she made implicating diddy was involved in the murder of tupac shakur. this allegedly happened during a facetime call, and she claims the music mogul heard those comments. she says. in 2018, a mutual friend invited her to his apartment in orinda. she says diddy entered the home, threatened her with a knife before he and other defendants in the case sexually assaulted her. she is suing for $50 million. we spoke with a legal expert about the numerous lawsuits diddy is facing. the best way to do that is to start with the law enforcement investigation at the time, and to give the complaining party
6:38 am
access to that information. the woman's attorney says the victim reported the incident to a contra costa county sheriff's deputy the night of the alleged assault. they have been denied police reports unless there is a subpoena. the sheriff's department confirms a report was taken, but it was later determined the claims were unfounded. the lawsuit claims the incident was also reported to walnut creek and orinda police. a walnut creek spokesperson says after thoroughly investigating the matter, the police department did not have any involvement in the case. we reached out to orinda police for comment but have yet to hear back. happening today, the case against protesters who blocked the golden gate bridge in april is expected back in front of a san francisco judge, so supporters are telling today's hearing the centering around two motions, one seeking to disqualify district attorney brooke jenkins from the case due to alleged bias. the other seeks to dismiss those charges altogether. you may recall when those 26
6:39 am
pro-palestinian demonstrators blocked the bridge for hours, bringing that traffic to a standstill and commuters miss work, school flights and critical surgeries as a result of the demonstration. let's take a live look outside, this time from the north bay. whoa! look at all the lights out there this morning. maybe a little moisture in the air. let's check in with kari. she's got a look at our forecast. yeah, we're making weekend plans, so let's kick it off with some football for san jose state on friday. it's going to be in the middle of the afternoon, windy and temperatures in the mid 70s. we could see those gusts picking up to about 25mph throughout the game. so it's going to still be quite gusty. and even on saturday for berkeley, going into the evening, we're going to see more of the same temperatures with some low 70s and then cooling down nicely. bring a jacket for the cal game on saturday evening, and then if you're going to sausalito on saturday, it's going to be nice. sunny temperatures going from low 70s in the early afternoon to mid 70s as the toast to sausalito festival continues
