strategy, courting maybe undecides and potentially republican voters who haven't signed on to donald trump yet. >> reporter: yeah, savannah, harris campaign telling nbc news they believe movable voters move late. a number of independents put off by former president trump, including some who voted for nikki haley. notably she got about 17% of the primary vote in that critical state of pennsylvania. that's why harris campaigned with about 100 republicans in pennsylvania just yesterday. why she was recently with liz cheney, vowing to put a republican in her cabinet. to be clear here, this is not going to change the minds of the vast majority of the republican voters who are locked in for trump. but in our latest nbc news poll, 9% of the voters said they might change their vote. and harris really only needs a slice in key states like pennsylvania. also states like right here in wisconsin, michigan where she will be tomorrow where the margins, of course, are so thin. savannah. >> thank you. former president trump meanwhile reacting to kamala harris's interview on fox, also hosting a series of townhalls to court

voters. nbc's garrett haake covers the trump campaign for us. hey, garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you. these town hall provided a rare opportunity to hear donald trump take questions directly from voters. so on issues like ivf and on his own controversial comments about democrats and immigrants, he gave voters plenty to consider. >> reporter: former president trump pushing back about questions on his fitness for office. on wednesday, during a fox news town hall, the former president responding to criticism about those comments calling democrats enemies from within. i'm not threatening anybody. they're the ones doing the threatening. they do phony investigations. i've been investigated more than alphonse capone. >> reporter: and raising eyebrows about his comments about in vitro fertilization, in front of an audience of all-women, a demographic where he has struggled. >> i'm the father of ivf.

so i want to hear it explained to him. >> reporter: the former president saying he defended the procedure after having it explained to him by katie brit. >> i got a call from katie brit. a young, fantastically attractive person from alabama, she's a senator. i said, explain ivf, very quickly and within about two minutes, i understood it. i said, no, no, we're totally in favor of ivf. >> reporter: vice president harris firing back. >> donald trump, i found it to be quite bizarre, actually, called himself the father of ivf. let's not be distracted by his choice of words. the reality is his actions have been very harmful to women and families. >> reporter: it comes as trump is also trying to expand his support among latino voters, a group republicans have made inroads with. discussing immigration in a town hall on univision. >> and the african-american population and the hispanic population in particular, are losing jobs now, because millions of people are coming in. >> reporter: but asked to clarify his debunked claims based on social media rumors that immigrants in springfield, ohio, are eating pets. >> i was just saying what was

reported. that's been reported. and eating other things, too, that they're not supposed to be. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump's running mate, j.d. vance, who has been cautious about questions surrounding the outcome of the 2020 election, providing his most direct answer yet. >> i think there were serious problems in 2020. so did donald trump lose the election? not by the words that i would use. >> so it's really the flip side of what we were just talking about with peter, garrett, where kamala harris is trying to get some of those disaffected republican voters, and here's trump trying to appeal to female voters, latino voters. where does the race stand there? >> yeah, look, savannah, harris leads comfortably with women. and according to our latest poll of latino voters, she has about a 14-point advantage over donald trump with latinos. look, that's better than joe biden was doing before he dropped out of the race. but it's significantly worse than any democratic nominee going all the way back to 2012. at the heart of the issue here for her are defections from latino men, especially men under 50 and without college degrees. they're turning to trump

instead. now, latinos, by and large, are sticking with harris. if that sounds familiar, it's this gender gap popping up again and again and again in this campaign. now across racial lines. i think, savannah, you can expect to see a lot more of these latino-focused events, more spanish language ads on tv and radio, over these last couple of weeks. savannah? >> garrett, thank you very much. let's turn now to new developments the middle east. the u.s. launching air strikes overnight on targets controlled by an iranian-based militia inside yemen. meantime, israel is continuing to bombard sites across lebanon, while facing more pressure to address the humanitarian crisis sparked by months of fighting. nbc's erin mclaughlin joins us now from tel aviv. erin, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, hoda. we have breaking news this hour in the region. the israeli military just released a statement saying they're investigating whether the leader of hamas was killed during an operation in gaza. they say three militants were found dead in a building, and they're checking on the

possibility one of them was yaya sinwar. overnight in yemen, u.s. strikes against iranian-backed houthi rebels. overnight in yemen, u.s. strikes against iranian-backed houthi rebels. for the first time, the u.s. military using b-2 stealth bombers to target the group's weapons storage facilities, deep underground. secretary of defense lloyd austin calling it a unique demonstration of u.s. capabilities. drastic action aimed at stopping the reckless attacks by the houthis, according to centcom. the united states first launched strikes against the militant group back in january, after the houthis, which control parts of yemen, started targeting military and commercial ships to show solidarity with hamas. meanwhile, the u.s. has said it has seen signs of progress in gaza, after the biden administration gave israel 30 days to improve the humanitarian situation or face cuts in american military aid. >> but there's much more that they need to do. >> reporter: according to the state department, the israelis allowed dozens of aid trucks to enter the strip on wednesday. however, nbc news has learned from contacts distributing aid

that few of those trucks have reached gaza city. hundreds of thousands of starving palestinians have been trapped in gaza and being bombed, according to human rights groups. israel says hamas fighters hide among the civilians. this morning, nbc news obtained this footage from a hospital in the north, showing doctors struggling to keep babies alive due to supply shortages. the jabalya refugee camp, where israel has launched a ground offensive, now described as a living hell. >> the situation is so bad. it's bad in a way in which you couldn't imagine it. anyone move, they're shooting them. so there is no water, no food, no medicine, no anything. >> reporter: this morning, an israeli official tells nbc news the israeli prime minister has been holding discussions on ways to increase the amount of aid to gaza. this as the state department

says it is watching the situation very closely -- that it wants to see the progress made so far not only sustained, but increased. hoda, back to you. >> erin mclaughlin for us there in tel aviv. erin, thank you. much more to get to we welcome craig. >> hoda, savannah, good morning. good morning to you as well. music fans around the world have been hit hard by the news of the sudden and tragic death of liam payne, one of the founding members of one direction. the 31-year-old singer dying after a fall from a hotel balcony in argentina. nbc's chloe melas is here with more on this story. chloe, good morning to you. >> good morning, craig. this was really shocking news. liam payne was just posting on social media hours before local authorities say that he fell from that hotel balcony. and now we're hearing a troubling 911 call, made just before the fatal incident. the death of one direction singer liam payne sending shock waves across the music industry

and beyond. local authorities telling telemundo that the 31-year-old music superstar fell from a third floor balcony at a hotel in buenos aires, argentina. devastated fans gathering to grieve outside the hotel where it happened. the police were called wednesday evening after a report of a, quote, aggressive man, who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. [speaking in a global language] >> reporter: in audio from a 911 call obtained by telemundo from local media in argentina, a hotel staff member tells the operator that a guest has overindulged on drugs and alcohol and was tearing up their room. the call does not mention payne by name, but appears to be from the same hotel where he was staying. [speaking in a global language] the caller telling 911, he's in a room that has a balcony and we are a little afraid that he will do something that puts his life at risk. in a statement to the associated press, the security ministry of buenos aires says that the

singer had jumped from the balcony of his room. >> good morning, everybody. >> reporter: in the hours surrounding his death, these videos and photos were posted to his social media with girlfriend kate cassidy. >> a lovely day here in argentina. >> reporter: police are said to be investigating the circumstances surrounding payne's fatal fall and conducting an autopsy. ♪ you're insecure ♪ ♪ don't know what for ♪ >> reporter: as one of the five members of one direction, which included fellow singer harry styles, payne was a part of one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. ♪♪ >> reporter: the group captivating a young and loyal fan base and headlined multiple tours. ♪ you don't know you're beautiful ♪ >> reporter: when one direction split in 2016, payne began working on a solo career, even stopping by "today" to promote his album, lp1. >> my first album, it's a big moment in your music career. so, yeah, it feels amazing. >> reporter: offstage, payne was a father to 7-year-oldson bear

gray. he also opened up about rehab and his struggles with sobriety. >> it's the first time i've ever put a drink down and i haven't needed it and haven't picked up one since. >> reporter: since then, payne started releasing new music, and earlier this month, he was seen waving at fans while attending former one direction band mate niall horan's concert. touching tributes from fans and friends flooded social media. charlie puth sharing this moment together, writing, liam was always so kind to me. i cannot believe he is gone. and fellow boy band the backstreet boys posting, rest in peace, brother. such a sad story. and guys, exactly what led up to payne's death is still unclear and authorities are really just hours into their investigation at this point. but they will likely run a toxicology screening, which should show if payne was, in fact, under the influence of any drugs or alcohol when he died. and obviously, everyone is waiting to hear from the members of one direction.

supporting eric and lyle showed up to add pressure to the district attorney, who was currently weighing whether to recommend resentencing. i spoke to the d.a. after the event, and while he hasn't yet made up his mind, he did indicate a degree of sympathy towards the brothers and said he does not believe they should spend the rest of their lives in prison. outside a los angeles courthouse, family members of eric and lyle menendez pleading for their release. >> lyle and eric were failed by the very people who should have protected them, but their parents, by the system, by society at large. >> reporter: among their supporters, the 92-year-old sister of kitty menendez, who was shot to death by her sons back in 1989 along with her husband, jose, in their beverly hills home. the relatives arguing that new evidence under review by the district attorney backs the brothers long-standing claim that they acted in self-defense after years of sexual and physical abuse by their father. >> it's time for them to be released and for all of us to continue to move on and healing as a family. >> reporter: the brothers currently serving life without parole receiving new attention thanks to several new document

tars and the popular netflix series monsters. >> eric, we did it! >> good afternoon. >> reporter: the family's news conference attracting a lot of media and sympathetic true crime fans. >> we didn't know what was what happened with them as children, that they were being abused or molested. >> reporter: but the menendez family is not unanimous in their support. kitty's 90-year-old brother is adamant his nephews should remain behind bars and does not believe their clams of abuse. >> milton anderson does not believe that. and he believes that it was really just motivated by greed. >> reporter: but the l.a. district attorney telling nbc news he does believe the brothers. >> do you believe that the menendez brothers should have to spend the rest of their life in prison? >> you know, i don't. i think that there is a certain level of evidence that points out that there were a lot of problems in the household. >> reporter: the d.a. says that he is still reviewing evidence, but signaled his support for re-examining their sentences.

more likely to say they experienced it. experts say the most difficult time for this, early in middle childhood. >> the sibling is the first person who we can start to compare ourselves to. >> reporter: university of missouri professor, megan gilligan, runs a lab studying sibling rivalry and says while these rivalries may seem negative, they do have a developmental purpose. helping siblings figure out what's unique about them, and separate their identities. something my sister christina and i went through growing up in a family of four siblings. >> we're 19 months apart. i'm the oldest. you're next. and from day one, we were kind of dressed similar, did everything together. arguing over clothes, arguing over toys, arguing over friends and boys, and finding our own interests. >> from an early age, i just remember wanting to do my own thing, wanting to dress my own way. if we got similar presents, it was not okay.

>> full meltdown. >> full meltdown. >> you had boyfriends before i did, and i remember when we were like in our 20s, people would say, your sister has a boyfriend. why don't you have a boyfriend? i remember mom always saying to people, don't compare them. don't say that. don't compare them. >> we're similar and also both so different, so the more that we can focus on those differences and also just like lean into them, which i think both of our parents taught us a lot. i just think that that allows for kind of more peace between a relationship. >> reporter: experts say when parents don't support their kids' differences and favor one child over the other, it can be harmful. and lead to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse later in life. >> if children perceive that they're the person that parents are having the most conflict, and that disappointment or conflict is greater than they notice with their brothers or sisters, that really seemed to

>> yes, yeah. that was maybe one of if not the most endearing quality about millie, was just her love for animals. i mean, she's shown up on set, it is absolutely a barn yard following her. she has a mini horse and a goat and like 19 dogs. and there are just like chickens flying out of her trailer. she loves animals. and she and jake are both so thoughtful in helping to rescue so many animals. in fact, i was able to help you adopt out one of your pit bulls to dave batista, who's drastic drax, big movie star, he's drax in guardians of the galaxy, but he loves pit bulls, and there was this beautiful pit bull named tallulah who needed a home. and i called dave, and he was like, i got it, brother, i'll take her. and now tallulah is her new baby. he's in love. i got to be part of that and it felt really good. >> you were part of that journey. i feel like when i went on to set, i was just starting my farm and adding animals, and i remember being like, i think i want to get like goats and i remember you being like, i have a farm, and i do that.
